As many, I am quite astonished by the G4's lack of development (not to insult the awesome devs having allready crafted some nice roms/tweaks or the one working on it (Awaiting CM12 patiently ).
With solutions like flashfire, the fact we can root, have Xposed etc... without bootloader unlocking, why doesn't LG just open up ? It worked great for Motorola, the nexus line is beloved for just having the cleanest possible android and quick updates.
LG's UI isn't really as loved as Sense or Touchwiz (even if in my mind nothing beats stock, sprinkled with some goodies à la motorola).
I just wish an LG dev/executive/t-shirt seller reads this and thinks : Hey, why don't we open the bootloader ? It doesn't change anything for us, as people can already. flash what the want. Hey, why don't we give our customers the choice to use an aosp build next to our UI, so everybody can have it the way they want ?
Wouldn't this be an easy way to get some sells and a distinguishing factor in this hard market ?
Just my little late night rant, but this seems to obvious to still not be a norml situation (well Motorola got it... thanks Google for that)...
LG having made now 3 Nexii could really have learnt something... I might still buy their phones, but it could be a much more obvious choice if openness had a bigger place in their mind.
Any opinions or ideas on how to change this ? Change.org ? A sitting in front of their offices ?
Have a great time guys
The nexus 5, and now the new small one, are both by LG and have unlocked bootloaders. Bootloaders aren't locked by LG, its by carrier. The internation verison, and Tmobile have unlocked ones, and you can flash stock roms on sprint devices...
Also, the percentage of people who root is very low in terms of all the people who buy the phone.
Example: At the store I work at, we sold over 100 G4's since its been out. Maybe like 6 of those people will root if even that.
Some variants (815 international non EU) are controlled by LG. However, I wouldn't say they don't care about their customers. Honestly, how many people with an android phone root their phones? How many of them care about bootloaders? Sure if looking only at XDA people, it would be over 80% but in real life random sampling with a large population I'd say it's below 2-3% easily. Out of everyone I know with Iphones/Nexuses/Samsungs/LGs I can, honestly, only say maybe 2-3 of them jailbreak of root/want an unlocked bootloader.
So yeah, overall sales would not improve at all by advertising an unlocked bootloader, especially once you factor in that your warranty is null and void once you unlock it.
I wish all OEM's would release an unlocked version with unlockable boatloaders and faster updates and sell them on their website for full price. Not sure why it has to be carrier or nothing in the states.

That is ideal, but when there are different markets all over the world, it's too complicated and potentially costly to implement compared to the potential sales.
People that unlock/root/flash phones as a hobby is quite a small percentage of their customer base, why would they cater to you? Plus, H811 has unlocked bootloader
I meant unlocked bootloader but without the warranty loss. XDA has some million members, even 50% of that could be interesting (look at the oneplus one, it is not the selling feature, just a nice plus argument).
They could save money by not trying to lock the phone up so much and it would be interesting to some... As we all know that flashing can't simply wrong your phone (especially if it is designed to be flashed).

That's not at all true. it's LG that is locking the bootloader, nothing to do with the carriers.
because the bl is locked, and the developer can't develop the customer rom ,including based o stock.:crying:

Over 99% of LG customers do not even know what rooting is, nor "flashing a ROM". Locked bootloaders are a manufacturer's choice for security concerns....Manufacturers like Samsung leave the choice in the carriers' hands....it is not directed at this community to prevent flashing AOSP ROMs.....it is an attempt to keep malicious hackers out of the phone...LG could care less about that...it is just collateral damage. So as far as LG's "customers" are concerned there would be no noticeable increase in sales by supplying an unlock.

When I had Samsung it was most differently carrier. Att was the only one who had blocked bootloaders and it was the carrier choice. Why then would lg just allow T-Mobile G4s to be unlocked? It didn't make sense to only allow two out their models if carriers have nothing to do with it.

It's never going to happen. FWIW if you unlock the oneplus one's bootloader, the warranty is void as well. You can brick your phone if you don't know what you are doing with an unlocked bootloader. This is why they do not come unlocked standard, and if you choose to unlock you lose warranty.

That's if you buy it directly from oneplus, however, you have an A0001 model, which is the Chinese-market version bought by a grey-market seller, who will probably consider any warranty void if the bootloader is unlocked. Even Google Nexus' phones have their warranty void when the bootloader is unlocked, and the Nexus phones were initially designed to be phones for developers to develop on.
I suspect the reason why many companies do not allow bootloaders to be unlocked easily is because there is no real benefit to them having it easily unlocked. In fact, having it easily unlocked (even with having the warranty void) could actually be an issue. This is because they then have less control over what software is actually running on their phones. Say someone installs an aftermarket rom, which is in beta, then someone who doesn't really doesn't have the XDA know-how uses it, they might find it unstable, laggy, crappy etc...and attribute it to the brand, and will tell others to avoid that brand. Then there is the problem of people who unlocked the bootloaders, who attempt to still try to send in their phone for warranty purposes when they broke it, or claim they didn't know their warranty would be void, this costs money still to check the phone determine that the boolader was unlocked. Then there may be some malicious people who convince their 'friends' to unlock their bootloaders, and install some virus, or spying software, and that could be blamed on the OEM by the person who doesn't know any better. IMO it could easily be considered an unacceptable risk to allow bootloaders to be easily unlocked compared to any benefit gained.
So except for appeasing the very small niche market that XDA caters to, which isn't really much of a benefit at all, there is more risk than it's worth to making bootloaders easily unlocked.
The only reason Oneplus could get away with that was because they didn't sell lots of phones (directly), they had a controlled invite system, and really most of the people who were even aware of oneplus' existence tended to be more of the type of people you'd find on XDA anyways. Even then, their customer service, even buying direct from Oneplus has been pretty shoddy.
Do you want my receipt form OnePlus ?
Or maybe the RMA Receipt of the last A0001 ?
Do you want my RMA receipt from the Bootloader unlocked/ custom kernel / custom recovery and whatever Nexus 5 I sent them ?
(and just FYI before you continue telling some random stuff... you can relock the Oneplus One/Nexus phons and there is no flag triggered (atleast not a known one...). Please do some research and just stop).
And you contradict yourself. You speak of a little niche, then talking about Oneplus targeting directly "Xda-memberish people" you know they sold some hundred-thousands of phone right ? So if my company could sell like even just 100.000 phones more (or even 50.000) just by making myselfs and the user's life easier why not do it ?

If you're in Europe you WILL get your warranty denied if you send in a device with altered software unless you can prove that the issue is not caused by the altered software. If you somehow managed to get a device repair under warranty it's either luck, an untrained chain of service workers or a very trained chain of service employees that understood that your issue was not caused by the altered system state.

Because these numbers are insignificant for Samsung, LG, Motorola or whatever brand you want. Heck even for HTC they are. The extra effort would cost more in labor than those 100k device's turn over (yes, turn over, not even profit!).

I am in Europe, I even discussed it with them... there really isn't a problem with it as long as you can clearly explain what you did and how it can't affect. You just need to know what you are doing... but same goes for kids and knifes... Overprotecting just brings a bigger mess at a later moment.

I did not know about the unlock flags not being triggered, that is my mistake. However, I did not contradict myself. OnePlus sells very few phones, and do not have mass appeal, and they targeted a specific group. This group is so insignificant, that large companies like Apple, Samsung, LG , Sony, HTC etc can really ignore them without much issue. I own an oneplus one. You may have had good luck with RMAing, but I know plenty that have had issues. Personally, I wouldn't buy another OnePlus phone for at least a couple generations.
The issue here is that you have not come up with a convincing argument to why bootloaders should be easily unlocked, and how that would lead to a significant market share increase for these companies, and that this larger market share would offset any costs and risk they inherit due to having an easily unlocked bootloader. I do not have the numbers, but, if you would like to convince these companies to do so, the onus would be on you to prove to these companies that it's worth their time.
Here is an example of why easily unlocked bootloaders can lead to bad experiences: Malware at the system level (not just installed, but intergrated into the system)
https://medium.com/@tuesdev/as-many...hs-to-receive-a-oneplus-2-invite-ba20ac8606ae
Although not specifically stated, without the unlocked bootloader this process would be far more difficult. Lucky the writer of the article knows it isn't Oneplus to blame...

Yup, can't see any reason for them to support a device they specially said to return and get a full refund or exchange.

Unfortunately this whole new return thing is U.S. only. Samsung Canada us playing dumb directing me to the "latest news" on their site praising the new safe Note 7s.
If there is a second recall in the U.S. hopefully Canada follows suite.

Number 1 reason this whole thing sucks for me.
I am a Pilot with Air Canada.
During recall #1 when Samsung Canada was slow to react saying nothing was wrong with their phones I literally had to ask "are you willing to take the risk of my Note 7 having an incident in my flightdeck" to get somewhere.
I used an old phone until my replacement was ready ( I ordered directly from Samsung Canada and they refused to issue me a loner saying my phone was safe to keep using, even while I told them I AM AN AIRLINE PILOT). I have been using my new Note 7 but now I will have to stop again.
Yet again, Samsung Canada is behind the times (and will continue to be) and told me TODAY that my new Note 7 is perfectly safe and I should continue using it. Once again, telling them I AM AN AIRLINE PILOT went wooosh, right over their heads.
I am getting tired of this. If there is a second recall I am demanding a full refund for the phone and all accessories.

So, if you are pilot, you should never carry any device wilth lithium batteries, ANY lithium batt operated device has the chance of a burning event
I think OS updates are over rated anyway. I rarely update my devices - they are usually one, at most two year devices and if an update does come within the time I actually use the device, it usually has bugs that need to be worked out the first couple months and rarely is there enough upgrade anyway. Sometimes it makes the phone worse. I am on my original custom ROM on my Note 4 Dev edition. Disabled OTA apk's via titanium. I have disabled OTA's on my N7 via Package Disabler. Neither my replacement N7 nor my original N7 did I take the battery "fix" OTA. I froze that first off on my new N7 even though it had downloaded it I never installed the update. So I have no reason to take a VZ OTA and now I can root my N7 if I want to. Doubt that would effect the recall if I have to send my N7 back. I am fine with MM. I am fine with this phone as is - best phone in the world is good enough for me.

Can i please get some advice? (sorry a bit long but thought i need to provide the background info).
I have been given a Samsung Note 7 as a compensation-related gift by my network operator Vodafone and to cut a very long story short i have almost exhausted all possibilities with Vodafone and Samsung to get it exchanged for a different model or a credit.
I am currently looking at the possibilities of keeping my Note 7 if i feel i can assess (and possibly repair) it privately to confirm the safety implications and any other issues that may come up.
My questions are as follows:
1. Has anyone had success changing the Imei and model number? The reason is to protect myself from network barring and to retain app support. I have a previous Note and can use the imei. My plan was to change the model to G935F that of an S7 Edge. (There are some sites i came across but I wasn’t sure the guides were tested)
2. Can i root it and will i be able to update it regularly from core android?
3. Will the Wifi-calling feature work? Sounds like a small thing but its quite important. I have this feature on my Note 7 already and activated on my account and its very useful to me.
I live in the UK and I am an Engineer by trade. I worked for a cellular phone repair centre a number of years ago that specialised with Samsung and Nokia phones.
Whilst i have some experience and contacts in the industry, my knowledge of the current software/ firmware platforms on the market is limited so i would greatly appreciate any advice you can give.
Thanks in advance
not too sure about how you would transplant the hardcoded iemi number mate... are uk note 7s actually confirmed being banned?
You can root it and from that you can add features from the xposed library that will surely extend the life of your note 7 for years.. by which time the note 8 should be out in some form.
I read on maybe this site, or another, that someone had their Note 7 thinking it was the S7 yet still fully functioning as a Note 7 (Grace UI, etc)

Thanks for info. I'm not sure if they will fully inforce a ban but the procedure for returning the n7's is pretty much the same, minus the fire proof boxes (read into that what you like). I want to see what needs to be put in place if they do.
Any idiots guide for rooting and where to download files would be appreciated.

If you do that would be great.
I'm trying to stoke up some support in the uk to appeal to Samsung to at least reassess the n7's already out there but there's only a few interested. I believe there is more support in the US which may provide a much stronger case.

The official release date in the UK for the Note 7 was next week, October 28th, which ironically was the same date as the Note 2 release, Note Edge release and Galaxy View release, just different years.
Call me crazy, I recognize a pattern here.
I am a serious Note user, so instead of following the crowd I will either consider the LARGE 18.4" Galaxy View or the 6" Curved Screen Huawei Mate 9. Hmmm, Mate, Note?
For some strange reason there aren't many Samsung Stylus Devices available, can't find the Note Pro 12.2 on sale anywhere. Something is definitely up. All I know is I feel sorry for those Pixel, iPhone 7, V20 blinded sheeple.

The recall is voluntary. Do not believe those people who say your IMEI will be blocked or barred. It will only be blocked if the phone was purchased in a payment plan and You fail to return it. Or if You fail to keep the payments. The recall is absolutely VOLUNTARY. Do not be afraid. Many of us are keeping the phone, because we know the risk is now minimal.
All electronics have the possibility to fail. All batteries have the risk of catching fires. This risk is a lot greater when the device begins their lifecycle. So now the risk is minimal. Samsung did not take "probability" into consideration before sending those replacement phones. Meaning if you had 50 in 2 million to catch fire with the original. Now you had 50+30* of catching fire in the replacement. (*More o Less)
Samsung has a great opportunity to collect data and usage information with us. Otherwise if people panic they will just scrap the Note Series all together.
Good Luck! ?

In short: No you can't change your IMEI, but that is not needed. If you don't want Samsung to directly know that your device is a Note 7, you need to change your device name in build.prop (but to do this you need root) and to deactivate software updates.
But I recommend you to not use the device. Samsung may not release any software updates, and the risk of exploding is still there. Even if the risk is very small, it can happen at any time, and the more time you spend with this device, the bigger is the risk.

Thanks for your reply SaschaHa. I am just weighing up my options while waiting for a reply from Samsung hq. If i was use it I would be after I had assessed it internally.
Although Samsung wont provide updates will I be able to semi - regularly update it manually from stock? Eg nougat 7 was originally in the pipeline for the n7.
Also would wifi - calling get carried over/ integrated in the build?

You only can update it manually if some rom developers port firmwares from other Samsung devices to the Note 7 (if Samsung doesn't release updates). But that mostly is only possible for the same Android version, so there might never be a Nougat rom for Note 7. So then the only possibility to get a newer Android version is to use a AOSP / CM(14) based rom, if a developer created one for the Note 7. But without proper drivers by Samsung, that's difficult. And I think, the most developers are going to use other devices instead of risking a burning N7.

Unless they have a Sprint Note 7 60% otherwise you can bump up to 80% charge. I recommend you get advise from an Engineer rather than a Sales Rep
I no longer have the pictures but click:

3.- Battery Icon
4.- Advanced Settings Menu

Good Luck! ?

I just want to be clear about something. You guys are from the UK, yes?
Is the recall not the same as the US or elsewhere where the recall is mandatory and not voluntary?

I'm not from the UK however I did purchase the Singapore (Same as UK) version and I'm using it on ATT Mexico.
Please refer to the Voluntary recall at: http://www.samsung.com/us/note7recall/
As of today the recall is only mandatory in Germany. Note 7 is banned on all flights in the US and part of Mexico. The mandatory recall will take time as the Consumer Product Safety Commission has to run a full investigation on the matter

Hello from Singapore then.
I suppose you're keeping your unit then.
There was a new security update for the Verizon version of the Moto E4 this week. It may have been released across the whole Moto E4 product line.
Besides securing the phone from the Blueborne Bluetooth weakness, the update also updated the camera app.
I was pleasantly surprised with both.
Does anyone know if the camera is performing any better in low light? The camera has been one of the few big weaknesses of this great cheap phone.
My Boost Mobile Moto E4 has received a whopping ZERO updates. It's still sitting on the May security patch... Hopefully we actually receive the update at some point.

Waiting and hoping... The story of Android.
The kicker, I have a LG Stylo 2, that was updated to the September security patch a couple of weeks ago, in fact LG has supported that phone consistently throughout the years. Sad to see Motorola, who builds basically a AOSP phone, unable to provide updates in any sort of consistent manner. I like Android, but that's way I switched over to iPhone... Timely Support.

Spend the same money on an Android that you did on that other thing and bingo, timely updates (well just get a pixel if you can afford it)

There is a huge difference between the two. $800+ on a Pixel and only 2 years of support, spend $800+ on an iPhone and 4+ years of support.
I can't afford to spend large amounts of money every couple of years to play catch up.

Pixel 2 gets 3yrs. Then security patches for a couple more. And if you use custom ROMs, then well, my S3 is running 7.1.2 and may get Oreo.

That's fine for a $50 phone, but I won't spend $800+ on a phone and need to flash custom ROMs to stay up-to-date.

Not here to debate Android vs iOS. If that's what you're looking for, ...
You'll find it somewhere. Just saying you were comparing this phone to big A's pride and joy. Not fair. Enough OT. Moving on.
P.S. I come TO flash ROMs, it's XDA.

You should go back and re-read your comments, as that's exactly what you were looking for. If you didn't want to have a debate, you shouldn't have commented on a post that wasn't directed at you.
Yeah, but you get very limited configuration options with that other device.

Absolutely! IOS is quite bland, that's why I still buy Android devices to play with. But security and longevity is most important to me.
Security?? Everything that's on ANY Apple product they have a copy of on their servers.

Nobody seems to be able to answer this one. Trump has extended the entity list inclusion until the 24th of November to facilitate existing Huawei devises. What happens after that date? Do the updates stop? Sofar its looking that way. Have you seen/read otherwise?

Good question. Not sure, but Huawei in general is pretty weak when it comes to security patches and updates. An example, Honor 8X only recently received July security patch in Western Europe. ( UK ). C432.

Indeed they are, for now. Beyond November 24th 2019 is in question. Well worth being aware of if you are thinking of jumping on an existing Huawei right now. Trump's statement on the extension looks like it could be curtains for existing devices too after 24/11

Good question. I was under the impression that existing devices would get updates indefinitely, and that new devices wouldn't .
For other reasons , I returned my mate 20X a couple of days ago. But was looking at buying another.
I'd normally say ask the Reddit, but like most places it's full of opinion rather than fact.

google made an early statement about huawie saying they have contirbuted alot to android and that the current devices will still be able to get updates and security patches and ofc access the app store.
but ofc as we were discussing above that we dont know for how long as nothing is certain or clear and with trump you cant really expect anything , as it was said they are giving customers a chance to migrate from huawei etc

its clear that no body knows what happens after 19 of november and to be honest i dont think trump will back off and allow things to work normally without some sort of a deal that gets him to win something etc.
so for now, if someone will buy a phone it will work out of the box but after that no one knows etc

A win will be and he'll get it, a couple of billions dollars worth of fines and easing of on tariffs and so forth for the USA and it's cronies. That's my opinion.
Anyone that hasn't been brainwashed and with half a brain matter will know that the originating issue has nothing to do with national security.
Me personally, I ain't worried about it all. Like I mentioned earlier I'd rather buy low if prices crash. Couldn't careless about the number one spyware Google.

exactly!
either way the deal on amazon uk was the mate 20x 4g + mpen+the cover case all for exactly 586 euros as good as it sounds it still quite some big money and since i wont be doing much here in egypt till i move to germany i might as well wait those couple more month and see what happens .
as for google, i dont think they will just block all older huawei phones from their servers and services etc bc all was licensed etc .
as for the updates and security patches, its said that huawei will wait for them on AOSP then push them to their devices etc .
also the 5g version price is going down so fast that its now 737 euros on amazon spain which is crazy tbh.
so as you said would great to snatch a deal if prices crash, but will it actually happen ? who knows.
i do use google apps tho like gmail, youtube, maps and definitly the store for most of everything else

Whether it crashes or not, one thing is guaranteed the prices will lower. Personally I don't think the mate 20x has fallen as much as it should have. In my opinion it should be $499. Bearing in mind it's almost a year old and has lost only $300. AliExpress has the Chinese variant for $497.
