Hello people,
I am currently searching for the best tablet around. All it has to be is some good specs, nice resolution and good value.
I would love to get an ipad mini retina ... but in my country its so expensive. So, my next option seems to be the LG G Pad 8.3 because of its strong specs and mostly nice screen size and resolution.
My question is... will any devs work on it? I would love extra support and some custom stuff to play with.
CM Rom for it would be lovely but it seems like a dream.

Yeah, a Dev just picked up one and said he is going to be working on a CM11 port for this device. I heard it was the dev or one of the devs that worked on the HP Touchpad. We have TWRP and CWM ready to roll when it hits.
btw questions go in the Q and A section (for future reference )

Also, try looking in the subforum for Android development to get an idea of what's going on.
Thank you for the replies guys.
I apologize for posting in the wrong section, I didn't use the xda forums for long and posted in a rush.
So, yeah I saw the dev, he seems pretty good and thats nice. It such a pitty if that tablet will not have xda support.
I don't see any great disadvantages with it... just the price.. but still its not that bad.

My bad.. I meant support from xda developers by the means that some devs will make custom ROMS etc..
Also, I would like to see more people in this forum section exchanging ideas and helping each other to solve any kind of issues.
My personal opinion is that you should get a Nexus 7 because they get the best support. The LG is not bad but the Nexus devices always get the best dev support as they are considered dev devices.

What you say is right.. but I am not touching the nexus because its screen is so smaaaall - sadly.
And I can't wait for another 3,5,8 months who knows for the new Nexus. So, I probably have to go with this one, it seems the best option.

I wouldn't cal a 5 inch screen small, but I currently have a Galaxy S3 and a Nexus 7, but hey, I prefer the portability, so all I need is 7 inches, and I can use a keyboard and mouse for things that need more accuracy, but I have never been a fan of phablets or iPad size tablets.....

You need a keyboard on n7?
If dev support and long-time updateability are important to you, buy ONLY devices which sell very well and where development is already in full swing.
All else is futile.
Devices which sell only smaller numbers are quickly not getting manufacturer updates anymore, and the probability that there's a dev who has the device is very low.
I'm usually absolutely not the kind of guy who does what all people do - on the contrary, I despise those "sheep". But with Android devices, this is the way to go, period.

I have been searching for a teardown of DEB but cannot seem to find one. Does anyone know the differences in the hardware between FLO and DEB besides the obvious, one has a sim card and one doesnt.
Is the LTE capability integrated into the SoC on DEB but not FLO? If not, is the LTE chip located on the main board with the SoC or is it on the daughter board at the bottom of the tablet where the sim-card plugs in? Any help is appreciated.

It's my understanding that Deb is relatively the same as Flo with the exception of data and full GPS capabilities. Many have flashed Flo ROM's on Deb devices and they will work but will not have data and full GPS capabilities, which defeats the purpose of having a Deb. An actual Deb teardown I have not done though.

I don't remember seeing it anywhere, but can I flash Deb roms on my flo? Theoretically, it should be fully functional (the flo, that is...), but I haven't had the guts to try as yet.

I don't actually care to try...I was just curious. Curiosity isn't enough of a reason for me to run that risk.
I've flashed deb roms onto my flo in the course of doing testing: yes it will flash and boot fine.
I forget if it would work without bugs (testing mainly consisted of making sure it boots and nothing major is broken, like wifi, screen, or touch)
Obviously you wont magically get cellular support, it'll be like how it already is: the rom will simply see a radio that cannot connect/sense any type of network.
The biggest hardware difference is obviously the lack of the modem, it's an external module like on all S600 devices.
Software wise there isnt that much major differences:
They use the same bootloader
They use the same kernels
At launch they had the same basebands (flo's never gets updated though info on wiki)
The actual drivers and roms are not identical though, at the very least they're built in both 'deb' and 'flo' configurations, at the very least they have different names inside the drivers

My experience is that some ROMs will work between the "Deb" and "Flo" models but others won't. Some are even advertised as being bisexual. :silly:
It's entirely possible for the hardware on both models to be exactly the same, with some deeply rooted firmware switch to activate LTE. I'd think from a manufacturing and inventory management point of view, it'd be cheaper to build one version due to less tooling and inventory holding costs.

Regardless of if the modem is in flo or not, there's no sim card tray on flos.
They could hypothetically use deb boards that otherwise work 100%, except somehow recieved a faulty modem chip,
but without a sim tray you wouldnt be able to do much with just that.
Many old tegra 2 based tablets had a PCI-E mini slot (PCI-E mini can do either PCI-E and/or usb, only the latter was actually available and that was what was used) where the modem went, you could likely solder in a slot on the wifi model and get the same modem elsewhere, but you'd need to also get a sim slot and tray to actually make it useful.
Hope some of you knowledgeable guys can help me identify my Nexus 7. The box clearly states that its made in 03/2013
and it definitely has the Qualcomm Snapdragon s4 Pro Quad-core 1.5 krait processor ( I used CPU X ) but only has 1 gig ram and no rear camera. I am therefore a little loath to start modding until I am sure of what model I have. Going into system settings the tablet is showing as ME370T running android 5.1.1
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Only one camera and ME370T, sounds like first generation "Grouper" (Nakasi), not second generation (2013) "Flo" (Razor).

Thanks for the prompt reply, I found a piece of software on the forum called 'Nexus Root Toolkit' which seems to confirm what you say, what confused me is that version 1 is supposed to have a Tegra 3 cpu. I will try and install the rom from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/nex...arrotmod-speed-2012-nexus-7-emmc-fix-t3300416 to try and even out the lags, I only want it to run my TomTom maps without freezing.

I had a Nexus 7 2012 and would recommend using the MKernel by Metallice it transformed my n7 also use Trickstermod from Google play to set it up enjoy?
Thanks for the tip but I have managed to sell my 1st Gen Nexus 7 and have now got a nearly new 2nd generation which I have rooted, installed TWRP and a stock 6.01 MM rom using the Nexus Root Toolkit v2.1.4 by wugfresh. Its running sweet at the moment, I am going to use it as a satnav for a forthcoming holiday in the U.S and start playing more with it when I get home.
This forum is certainly packed with knowledge which just needs to be read carefully to get things to work.
Hi guys,
Going to buy the Nexus 7 soon b/c I can get it at a good price and my current tab, LG G Pad 7, is running too slow. Now although I am not too fussed if it gets Android N or not I just want to know what you guys, who own the Nexus, think.
Will the Nexus 7 2013 get Android N, what are the chances?
P.S. The main reason I would like N is b/c of the split screen feature, my G Pad comes with such feature as standard-courtesy of LG.
On this website for End of Life policies for Android and Chromebooks for the education sector it says that the Nexus 7 (2013) is supported until July 2017 but this could also just mean security updates, I wouldn't count on it.
https://support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/6220366?hl=en
Must people always post these silly questions? It'll be supported by Google or it won't; nobody here would know.
officially? chances are very slim.
unofficially with a ROM....100% yes. this is still a highly used device (its aged so well hasn't it?) so it'll get updated by some of the awesome Developers here.
I'm waiting to see if the supposed Nexus 7 2016 comes to fruition. If so, I'm grabbing that, and won't care about putting N on my 2013 model.

If they only put 2GB Ram in the 2016 version it will suffer the awful performance of the Nexus 9 and Nexus 5x. Lets hope they don't make the same mistake. I'd like to see the SD820 in the new version as the Tegra chips don't handle memory well and the intel chips have some compatibility issues.
As google dumped the Nexus 4 for M I think there is no chance of the N7 2013 getting N. The Nexus 4 could have easily ran M so Google can't use the hardware excuse.

As reported here (https://source.android.com/devices/tech/power/mgmt.html#doze-reqs), Doze requires a sensor that N4 doesn't have. So maybe N4 could get Marshmallow, but without Doze. Also Google said that two years of updates are guaranteed, but this doesn't mean that further major update can't come to N7 2013 and N5, only that maybe can arrive, maybe not. also, if i remember correctly, Marshmallows was out on october 2015, N7 2013 was out on August 2013, more than two years then. But N7 2013 was updated to marshmallow. At this moment, i don't see features in android N that cannot be implemented in N5 and N7 2013.

Doubt any Nexus 4 owners would buy in to that excuse from Google though. Its funny that with the 4's awful battery, it is the device that could benefit from M and doze the most.

Thanks for the detailed insight. As you mention it is an old device we'll be lucky if we got the next version but if we don't it is fine, as a student I need a tab that works fast and that I can carry around with me. My current LG tab is running slow af hence the I bought the Nexus 7. There are rumours of there being a 2016 edition but nonetheless it will be way out of my price range.

Hmm, if I had to take a guess the consumer EoL would probably be sooner, I assume the education versions run on modified android firmware which will allow them to get further security updates. Who knows though-I may be wrong.

Don't go by those git tags as Google automatically generates them for currently supported devices at time of publish. Doesn't mean that they will be supported at time of final release.
For example with Marshmallow, N4, N7 (2012), and N10 all had preview tags on Git as they were supported at time the preview code was publish but did not get final releases.
Maybe / Maybe Not
Look more closelyer. The tag isn't some stub, I checked deb branch and there have been three commits to the tree that are deb specific. This doesn't mean there will be a release but it does mean someone is actually working on the project. Could be a N7 enthusiast at Google playing in their paid spare time Google gives it's employees. Honestly I doubt there will be a release but there may be more clues here than we think. I'll clone the last release and this "preview" and do a diff. If the result shows its worth a try I *might* have time to attempt a build and see if it will build or not. If it builds it's probably not just autogenerated but active.
If it won't build its probably purely a unintentional creation by a script.

And the same thing happened last time also. The only code they released is what's required under GPL but doesn't automatically equal guaranteed release.
Ok so maybe they do release N for the device but the point is that the git tags themselves aren't a guarantee that we are getting N.

Project is active, but this doesn't mean anything. Also, if you download the sources with N-Preview Tag, you will obtain only Android 6.0.1. ANdroid N is not released to AOSP. Source code will be pushed with final release. So the only thing is wait. Howewer, don't worry. I'm planning to do a fake Nexus Rom for N5 and N7 2013 when Android N will be pushed to AOSP.
On a side note, today was the first day of using my Nexus 7 properly, I noticed choppiness whilst playing games-namely minecraft. Anyone else also experienced this? Mine is running the latest MM firmware.
Yes, some games are lagging in MM but not on Kit Kat.

Hello,
I'm new to cyanogen/lineage, and I become interested because so far the only experience I got with android is a phone that wasn't updated even once by the company (bq) and a tablet that will get stuck on 6.0 (motorola).
Therefore my main concern is to have updates for as long as possible.
I can see that many devices I'm interested in don't list any maintainer:
wiki.lineageos.org/devices/ (can't post links)
Does this mean that those phones won't get any new lineage version?
Is there a way to know if a phone will be abandoned sooner than others?
Is it better to buy well known device than a more rare brand?
Is it better to buy a high end phone used than a basic model new?
Any recommendations? I need a pretty simple thing, 4G is a must and dual SIM would be a nice feature. I'm not that interested in power screen resolution or camera.
Thanks a lot for your answers.
I have seen devices getting removed due to inactive maintainers. So hard to say any time.
I use a Moto Z. It's getting it's first build soon [emoji2]

I want add another question to the thread. What will happen with 32 bit processors.
As far as I know, android 7 cannot be installed in any 32 bit processor. Will be the same with lineage? The equivalent version only will be compatible with 64 bit processors?

I was sure that I read it somewhere, but it may be that this was comment from a particular brand.
If there is no limitation in this regard I feel more comfortable buying a used device with an older processor.
