Contactless payments with Barclays UK - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

Just on fence about ordering one of these but would love to know anyone with experience of using the Barclays mobile banking app with contactless payments as a google does not bring up much. It is supposed to work with any NFC enabled phone but the app only works on non rooted phones.
Is the stock rom on the op3 non rooted? I have had phones that were not rooted but the banking app still said it was etc.
I would really like wifi calling on EE uk but that does not look like it will happen any time soon if ever.

I've used Barclay's tap and pay since I got my op3. It's the only reason now I haven't rooted, i use it everyday.

Thats cool. I guess like android pay it does not use the finger sensor to pay? I had an iPhone se and loved apple pay but the phone was far too small and I can't bring myself to pay so much for a 6s plus when the op3 is half price.
Do you just wake the screen and it just pays?

Yes just touch the home button which reads you finger print and touch to pay.
It really is very good

When you say touch to pay is it touch the finger sensor or something on the screen?

You wake the screen then touch the phone against the contactless reader in the store

Thanks. Not sure it actually needs to touch it as iPhone deffo did not need to. Just hold it near was enough. Sounds good though.

Presto Payments

In toronto the transit system here has made a new payment system, an NFC enabled card. I'm wondering if there is a way that I can use my phone to pay/ send the nfc signals to the machines?
HSR in Hamilton also has this transaction system implemented. Would be interesting to see imho.
According to Metrolinx, using NFC-capable apps is definitely in the cards (no pun intended).

Not trying to bring you down, but they said NFC-capable devices. That could mean, that they might do contracts with Mobile Network Operators or so and install an app on the secure element. So we'd not use a normal "Android-App".

Yeah but at the same time, GO Transit (and thus Metrolinx) DID get Ryerson University to build their (decidedly awesome) mobile app for them. So while I will concede that what you suggest is certainly POSSIBLE, it would also be something that would be both terribly unpopular, and likely quite expensive.

Lets say it like this: It's still quite a difference if you emulate a card type that your reader already can read. If yout want to go the way of an app, then there would be the need to replace the old reader infrastructure with NFC readers. Both ways are expensive for the one or the other side in the end.
I would love it if one day they brought it to mobile phones. The more I can do with my phone the better. I hate carrying a bunch of stuff when one thing can do it all.

Presto app genuine does not work on nfc - capable devices like pixel, ph-1 and lg5, moto g6 play , though did not tested on custom roms yet but unlocked bootloader devices mentioned above do not work with Presto.
P.S. If your device has finger reader, Presto will work but give you error for payments if you did not enabled lock screen pin/gesture / not swipe!/ + insert your, at least, one finger print.
Question is is there any hack to make enable to work the Presto app on device that was bootloader unlocked and rooted (hard or with magic app)?
The chip that gets read from the presto card is actually very small about the size of a sim card, I sliced mine out of the card and attaached it into my watch buckle,. Now when I get on a bus I look like James Bond.

Exactly why this'll be the first device I won't root. Honestly I see no reason to this far.

Well..by the time the technology catches up, you all will probably be on your next phone, Xposed will be working flawlessly with Sammy stock ROMs, and there will be modules and ways to hide root so that you can use the Sammy Pay. This is no different than past Pay type apps that were blocked because of root..one of those is what Sammy purchased and is incorporating. Since rooting opens your phone to major security risks, would you expect any less from an app that has a ton of your financial information?
I sat through the lecture Jcase gave at DevCon 2013 regarding the dangers of rooting and it made me think twice about what is on my rooted phone. If anyone is interested in watching the 50 minute presentation I can post the youtube link here.
Yeah, probably I won't root either, I already have the hotspot / tethering working without root and I don't want to loose NfC / Samsung Pay

What I mean is the availability of machines to accept the phone NFC as payment from Samsung Pay. These devices are very scarce in my neighborhood. I have only seen them at Sunoco gas stations here. Google wallet, Isis, Samsung Pay, Apple Pay....cool gimmick but not really going to replace carrying around credit cards. I don't expect waiterpersons to have a device to carry from table to table to accept these payments in restaurants. So what I mean is it will be years before this type of payment is as common as using a credit card. And certainly would never even be a consideration in my root or not to root decision.
Only... Samsung pay doesn't need nfc to work. It is compatible with regular magnetic card readers. It uses magic I believe...

Yup. This is my understanding as well.http://www.androidcentral.com/forums-samsung-pay-galaxy-s6-and-why-it-matters Works not by NFC, but the magnetic strip machines that are already used almost everywhere. Which in my opinion, is a game changer (in a big and good way) for sure!

I see! Thanks for the article. And I agree that does make it more useful...but you still are not going to give the waiter your phone and password to pay the restaurant check. It does become more useful in the shopping area and gas station type thing. It still seems like a johnny-come-lately gimmick and for those that really want this hopefully the T-mobile and Sprint uses will find a way to hide root and let it work.

But Samsung Pay NFC is just a small part. That's not the big deal. MST is the big deal. This method works on all terminals where you'd normally swipe your card. Edit: I see it's already covered

I know right! I do like nfc tap and pay when available, but I'll admit, is not necessarily the convenience factor but the "cool" factor.Wallet and nfc payments are cool when they work but most of the time it proves to be more trouble than its worth and i end up pulling my card out anyway. Maybe Samsung Pay will change all that?
I was always happy to root my device because Google Wallet + NFC didn't care. Now I'm tempted to wait and see how things go. Even though it'll be more accessible, there's also the caveat that retailers stop keeping their card readers behind the counter and put them out in the open for customer access.
Sadly the news today says that Samsung Pay won't be released until September this year, so another 4 more months.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't this make it mute. Looks like the magic swipe will be dead by the end of the year here in the us. No more swipe and sign, just NFC. http://www.wsj.com/articles/BL-234B-3681

Anyone having second thoughts about their pre-order?

Especially if you could only get the 32gb version. I have the onpelus 3. Good device. How do you think the Pixel XL will be better? I think the camera is a big plus for it. Maybe faster software updates, although not sure how fast the updates were on the latest nexus devices.
Here I've been using an OP2 and I can't wait to change of device...
My OPO was great, my OP2 suck since I got it with all the cheap hardware problem.
I'm going with a 32gb Pixel Xl, I won't miss that 32gb less than my OP2. I can't wait to be on our Android, using PA ATM but it's not perfect.

Lucky for me i get to go to a CPW on release day so if my unit has not shipped by then ill go in store and pick one up and if not i might just not bother all together, my 6P is still fine
Cancelled my 32 Silver for a 128 black. I heard that the white front might not be best for VR and I got worried about space having a 64 6P currently.
Second thoughts.... sure it is going to cost me $1300 with the taxes.
I think twice about spending that much cash.
I pre ordered. But now I see the v20 on B&H with a tablet (as a gift) for 870. No taxes.
We are talking about $100 difference and you get a tablet that you can sell for another 100$.
The v20 has great sound, camera, screen and Nuget.
So at this point I don't know.
No HD Voice for the Pixel on AT&T is a big drawback for me. Just found out that AT&T won't activate that feature for off-carrier phones.
Dropped off my Note7 on Friday at the AT&T store, using an S7 Edge for now (so similar to the Note7 but not at the same time). Ordered the Pixel XL that same evening (Black/128) without a second thought. The only thing I will regret, aside from thinking the Note7 was the best looking phone but that ship has sailed, is Samsung Pay. I have been using it since getting the Note in August and I love it! I wish Google had purchased that company that patented MST technology....it's the shizzle!!

This is pretty big as I'm on AT&T as well. Did you cancel yours.
I just canceled my Pixel XL 128 GB. T-mobile has an offer for the LG V20 for $550 after trade -in of my old phone. I get B&O headphones for free and even could get a tablet for free. For the pixel I would have paid almost 1,000 bucks and nothing on the Pixel would rectify that price difference. For 550 I can sacrifice some "features" like Google assistant etc.

You just tapped the card swiper or something like that? I think I tried it a year ago with the s6 but wasnt accurate at all for me.
I ordered the 32GB XL and I am a little worried that I didn't get enough storage, but I had a 32GB Nexus 6 previously and it wasn't a huge deal. I just need to be careful about deleting old TWRP backups and photos that have been backed up to Google Photos. I will only regret my purchase if the storage speed sucks, even though it has UFS 2.0. Google has been so terrible about storage performance, but the switch to UFS 2.0 should hopefully address that problem. As long as that's good to go, I will feel as though it was money well spent.

Samsung Pay has worked flawlessly for me, I use it almost everyday and most days multiple times. Grocery stores, WaWa's, gas stations, only place it didn't work is in a small waffles and ice cream store called Nina's. Great waffles but they use one of those attachments to an iPad and it didn't recognize the card.
the only problem with Samsung pay is they were/are slow as hell at expanding it, they have been talking about it since the S6 for the UK and it still isn't out here, so coming from my Note 7 I won't miss it because Samsung never got round to actually bringing it to Europe unlike Android Pay, so really MST or not I would probably not even look at Samsung Pay now, for me atleast that shipped sailed a long time ago.
as for having second thoughts, since I had to return my Note 7 this is the only phone I can see as a replacement and I need something to get off the S3 that was the only phone I could scrounge to use while I waited for the network to actually sort out what it is doing (it still hasn't about 4 or 5 days after taking my phone off me, no surprise I am changing network)
No none at all.

Yeah works great at the small number of merchants that accept NFC payment. I've been using Google's version for years, I still have a $20 Google gift card for using Google Wallet back in like 2011 or so. My point is Samsung Pay is far superior because of MST technology. I can use it everywhere a credit card is swiped regardless of whether there is an NFC pad or not.
I tried Samsung Pay 3 or 4 times on my S7E I had. It worked exactly 0 times for me, so I stopped trying.
I think I must go to places with very finicky readers or something.

Occasionally I get a "card could not be read" message but then I reswipe and it goes through. I have had great success with using it, you should try it again. Also I found watching the Samsung Pay tutorial helpful as I wasn't "swiping" my phone which helps the reader pick up the information.

Does Android Auto work for you?

I've heard Android Auto usually doesn't work on Huawei phones and unfortunately its one of the few things I do need working on my phone. (Not just the App running, but more that is connects to my car successfully)
I'm in the US and will want to make sure Android Auto is functional before I pull the trigger. It looks like it has good LTE band support for AT&T so that i usually the other concern but I'm sure that is going to work fine.
If any of you US folks can confirm Android Auto is working I would really appreciate it, Thanks!
Would be very interested to know this too.

There is a ton of misinformation floating around. Chinese version comes with services baked in. All its missing is google play store and certain google apps like gmail, android auto, hangouts, calender, and others. Its like you installed pico gapps for a rom. Just the basics included. But services and calendar sync and such were already baked in.

If the price is the same and such I'd just grab the global. If its not that's up to you then whether you can stand the differences. I got mine the day of release from a lady who I know that came back from Shanghai that day. She grabbed my phone on the way to the airport for me from a Huawei Shop in Shanghai so I paid release day price of $880 w the case. For me that was worth it given the vendors are charging more on top of that. So I "deal" with the china problems. Notification are delayed but I found a setting that lets you tell it to not kill the background work so as long as I don't accidentally close it myself my apps that are important run in the back ground. You "can't change the launcher". You'll have people say BUT YOU CAN JUST USE GESTURES! but that isn't changing the launcher to me. They will be releasing a fix for that but I believe that affects global and china. Biggest thing for me past that is the notification stuff which I believe I've fixed as so far it's responsive.

I've had a few Xiaomi and Huawei phones in the past so I am fairly familiar with the hoops you have to jump through to disable the weird task killer stuff and get notifications working. But yes, I'd certainly want notifications from apps other than the build in ones to be pretty real time. So I think I'm ok with that.
Can't change the launcher? they block installing of any third party launcher? While not a deal breaker, I am certainly accustomed to using Nova launcher. But if It's being fixed I guess that's ok too.
The only other major issue for me I've had on the Mi Max 3 is Video Chat apps. I use Line and Skype and the other person cannot hear me consistently. Audio keeps dropping in volume and breaks up, makes video chatting unusable. I am able to get around it by using WhatsApp (No idea why that works and the others don't)
Have you done any video chatting on the phone by chance?
How are you making out with the LTE bands in the US? It seems like the band list for this phone covers most of AT&T...
Thank you for all the help.

You can install them and run them you simply can't make them default. I've not done video chatting but honestly I don't like to do it but I'll say if the other cameras are anything to look up to your going to be 100% fine. I get full 4g lte its just missing band 30 but my phone seems to sit on band 2 all the time.

So I don't have netflix as I use plex and such. Youtube lets me watch videos at 1080p60fps and I've actually tried doing 4k ones and it does seem to handle them well. Though you need to be closer to an AP since the transfer is a lot of data. I assume though you mean some paid youtube service or like amazon video which appears to stay low quality. The global is level 1 and china is level 3 for the drm security crap.

Question Who's Going From OnePlus to Pixel 6?

Been with OnePlus since Op6. Getting my Pixel 6 Pro tomorrow. After the reviews and some user comments I don't think I'm going back.
I would like to have it, not as a replacement of OP9P, but as a second device. Unfortunately, it isn't available in India.
If I didn't already a 9 Pro it looks interesting because you gan get 512GB.
Maybe the Pixel 7 Pro next year.
Was there really a need to start another thread on this?
Google Pixel
Is anyone here thinking of replacing their OP9P with a Pixel 6?

No.
I'm switching, but my order should arrive around 1/12/2022 sadly
I'm going to Pixel6Pro and trading in my OnePlus8Pro. But, keeping my OnePlus9Pro!
I was going to buy the 6 Pro but after reading lots of reviews, I think I may buy the OP 9 Pro instead, especially now that it's on sale.
Display brightness and custom ROM support is a huge thing for me.

Just got back from T-Mobile.
I bought a OnePlus 9 Pro with Magenta Max plan (netflix, free data, etc) for $85/month including all fees (after $10 corporate discount).
They had Pixel 6 Pro too, not in stock, but for sale. And were offering $600 trade-in on my Pixel 3 XL which was a pretty darn good deal. But in the end the OP9P just had more of what *I* wanted.
Gonna probably miss that camera on the P6P though.
Probably also gonna miss Google Fi's voicemail to text and web browser texting on my computer!
edit: text-from-web-browser is a feature of Google Messages which is apparently not tied toGoogle Fi.

Well I'm sure it will get better with updates but actually the pixel6's camera isn't looking too great out of the gate. https://www.phonearena.com/news/Pix...s-Galaxy-S21-Ultra-Camera-Comparison_id135852
Also, if you use windows 10, you can always use the baked in "your phone" app to link your Android phone with win10 PC and receive/send all text messages and not even need to be in a browser. You can also set what other apps you want to see notifications on your PC from your phone. Oh, and make phone calls if you have a headset with mic.

Yeah, I see tons of posts from people freaking out/returning phones over a lot of issues that won't be issues after the software updates fix them all within the next few weeks.

Nice tips, thanks!

Oh geez, my first regret at going to T-Mobile OnePlus.
Do I seriously have to "SIM Unlock" my OP9P phone before I can root it?!?
I thought only Verizon & AT&T gave a crap about root.
What a PITA.
90 minutes on the phone with T-Mobile, first person said she'd help me but then she accidentally hung up, second person said she wouldn't help me, third person said she'd email me in a few days with a form to unlock the SIM.
I'm not going to another carrier, I just wanna root!
Never had to do this on any Pixel before.
I checked eBay and everybody wants like $150 to unlock your SIM.
Which is about $145 more than I'm willing to pay before returning the phone to T-Mobile.

Yeaaaaah, buying any phone through the carrier is bad. They generally won't unlock it until it's fully paid off and even then there's usually a 30 day or so wait after it's paid off. That's why I just apply for a 0% interest credit card and buy the global unlocked variant. I've heard people say they've had success tweeting t-mobile's twitter somehow however I don't use twitter so I have no idea who/how that would work.

i've been successful with messaging them on facebook and asking them to add the IMEI to the whitelist. i've been with them for 17 years and I think that helps me when I message them.
6 Pro, maybe next year, in the spring, if i can get it with 5-600 euro. Just like i get 9 pro.
I'm thinking of it because i've seen "leaks" of 10 pro. Is Horrible! More Hideous rounded corners!. Same Useless curved screen. The cameras design are copied from Pixel 6.
Order the pixel 6 pro. Wasn't expected to arrive until late nov/early December, which was fine. But the more I considered the incredibly slow charging of the pixel 6 pro by today's standard was a big reason I cancelled the order. I mean serious...our 50w wireless charging in a good deal faster than their 30w plugged in charging. It would feel like such a downgrade in that respect. And while Google's new CPU is supposed to be quite good, it is not as fast as the snapdragon 888. All and all, if I was on an older phone I'd probably do it. But I see no upgrade from a Oneplus 9 pro.
OOS is dead!!! With lack of device & software support, ingenuity, and a realistic plan... 1+ users already jumping ship to Pixel 6 Series...
Remember "Never Settle"??

What was the point of this post?
So had a chance to play with the Pixel 6 Pro. Here is my thoughts:
Not sure if I like Android 12's user interface. Not too appealing. That's my opinion. The screen is nice and huge. Rear camera seems really nice with only testing a few shots. Selfie camera over saturates and sharpness is way too intense. Haha you could see every pore in your face. Phone isn't too heavy and the feel of it is pretty nice. From what ive heard is battery life isnt good. But the biggest plus Google has is NORMAL UPDATE SCHEDULE. OnePlus has been lacking a lot. My wife wants to possibly switch,so, eventually I will. Torn between waiting for a s22 ultra or getting the Pixel now.
