Smoother, better screen, battery life similar in my usage situation (plus battery is swappable), much, much better camera (auto and manual).

Coming from Z3 to G4 from 3 weeks
Z3 with international firmware:
- Screen is less bright (less nits) than Z3 and it is difficult to read text under sunlight
- Audio is louder than dual channel in Z3
- Battery is very weak, it is the phone that lasts me less than other I had (Z3 and Note 4 were beasts in battery life)
- Camera is very very good, much better than Z3 BUT photos are oversharpened and there's not a good timeshift or timelapse
- Ergonomy is very good, Z3 was more little to handle but G4 wins
- Smoothness is better in G4 than Z3 but both are slower than other phones I tried (1+1, Nexus 5, Xiaomi Mi4, HTC M8 (the best))
Change from Z3 to G4 if you would take better photos and listen to music in the bathroom (where sound power is the best feature you need).

I used the Z3 (D6603) previously. "Is it worth it" is a bit subjective, but here's my two cents anyway.
I much prefer the look and feel of the Z3 to the G4. The Z3 is a very attractive device, and the build feels very solid in your hands. The G4 feels like any other plastic device you've ever held. If you've played with a Samsung device prior to the GS6, then you know how the G4 feels. The leather back helps a bit, but it still doesn't make me feel like I'm holding $500 in my hand.
I like the camera, and I find that the camera is better than the Z3. There are far more options in manual mode, and the Auto mode doesn't take shots that look like they were from a 2010 flip phone, like the Z3. If you aren't using Manual Mode on the Z3, you are pretty much guaranteeing a terrible picture. The G4 offers a lot more in the way of lighting adjustments, exposure settings, and balancing options. There's also RAW support too, if you're into that.
Software wise, LG's skin is pretty ugly, and I wish they would just stop. Sony did a pretty good job of keeping things reasonable and attractive with their skin. Neither one is a lightweight skin, and there are heavy modifications to the Android framework on either side. This mostly affects root and Xposed options in regards to what works and what doesn't.
In terms of performance, I'd say the G4 is in the lead, but this isn't an apples to apples comparison, but the G4 is clearly a faster device. I prefer the thermal management on the G4 over the Z3, which heats up to uncomfortable levels when under pressure. I like that I can record more than 5 minutes of 4K video with the G4 without the camera app shutting down. I do miss the waterproofing of the Z3, and I actually brought my Z3 with me on a trip recently where I knew there would be splashing. I would have needed to keep the G4 in a plastic bag or something.
The battery life on the G4 is pathetic compared to the Z3. I was getting over 5 hours of screen time with no issues on the Z3, and I'd put it on the charger at night with 40% or so left. The G4 struggles to make it through the day with a full charge and 2-3 hours screen time. This isn't really bad battery life. It's more like average, but I was spoiled with the Z3. Having a spare battery to swap into the G4 is handy to fix this, though I'd rather that I didn't have to.
Overall, I wouldn't go so far as to say that I'm elated over the change, but it's a situation where you win some and you lose some. My opinion is "meh".

I came from z3 international.
Camera is a big plus. However the battery life is really not as good as the Z3, also Z3 software is closer to stock.
G4 feels better in the hand though - so I actually like it a fair bit more than my z3.

From dual sim Z3, worthy yes in terms of battery life and screen on time but nothing else... Lg g4 is an upgrade in everything except for the battery section.
Still I prefer having a removable battery so it works for me ?

Thinking about switching from Nexus 5, few questions

Does the 1080p resolution result in visible pixels? How well will the phone do with a VR headset due to the low resoution for a 5.5 inch display?
Battery life of my N5 never was good, after 3 years of use it's really bad. How much of an improvement can I expect?
How much more power in real life experience can I expect from the Snapdragon 820 compared to the N5's 800?
Do you think the switch is generally worth it? I was thinking about waiting for the new Nexus devices, but the pricing of the N6P makes me think I won't get as much bang for the buck as I do when buying the Oneplus 3.

It's a great phone if you plan to run stock BUT there's no dash charging for custom ROMs AND there is no good camera on custom ROMs.
Oneplus hasn't released the source for dash charging and camera apk.

1. cannot see any visible pixels. I don't use VR, so I can't comment on that.
2. Battery life will be a generous increase, at least for me and my usage it was. And I came from a 5X. It last me a full day and then some.
3. Compared to a N5, day to day usage you should see a noticeable increase in speed, especially if you decrease animations to .5. where you will see the most benefits will be multi tasking, gaming and tab intensive browsing.
4. I've had both the 5x and 6p, the former being my favorite. Unless your a huge Nexus fan, in my opinion i would get the OP3. It is just as easy to unlock the bootloader and run custom Roms. At the moment custom is kind of limited because the kernel source not being released, no dash charge. But all the Roms are here, including AOSP. (Slim 6) I'm using stock oxygen rooted, fits my bill. The only other thing would be the 2016 Nexus' but I'm not a big fan of HTC, the RAM will be less and I'm not sure they will be able to beat the OP3 all around.. Check my Sig, I've had a few devices and this is by far my favorite.
Again, these are just my experiences/opinions.

both the 2016 Nexus 5" and the OP3 will likely be amazing and powerful. Camera on the OP3 is not as good as N6P though, FYI. performance is much better than any other phone though. minor customizations are nice too
The only thing i'd recommend is avoiding the 2015 Nexus 5X.

1. Personally I use VR alot and I don't see any noticeable problem ....it performs like any other 1080 device (comparing with my 5inch 1080p s4) ...even though it's 5.5 inch it still looks good in Vr...coming to those heating ....even one plus 3 gets heated up after using VR for a long time and reaches to 40-45° Celsius or even more sometimes
2.It gives more than 5hours of screen on time to me ....and since warranty isn't void when rooting you can use a custom kernel or lower the clock speed to improve battery life even more
3.personally I never used N5 and coming to performance of AOSP or close to AOSP Roms they perform well even in a snapdragon 400...but snap820 gives a boost in gaming ...games run smoothly and the device can even have another game in its memory and you can keep switching without any lags and there is negligible heating while gaming
4.i'm sure the new Nexus will be costlier ...but if you are a VR fan you might be expecting alot from Google's upcoming daydream and I don't really know what exact hardware it actually needs and Google said that no current device will fully support daydream ...and it's just axon 7 which is said to be daydream ready for now ....you can buy one plus right now or wait for Nexus to come and decide between the 2 ....it will be your final decision ....personally I think you must go for one plus 3 because it's really a "value for money " type of device

I switched from the Nexus 5 as well and I do not regret it. The device is amazing and you will not get anything better for 400€/$ (IMHO).
The battery life is good so far, but I cannot give you any numbers since I have only used it for about a week and tinkered a lot with it. This makes any estimation for battery life unrealistic. So far I would say it is better than the Nexus 5 but that is all I want to say about this topic .
The larger display, larger storage, better camera and larger RAM are definitely worth an upgrade in my opinion!
That said, my Nexus 5 still works fine with a new battery and cm13 (caf-version (!)) and there are also a few things it does better than the OP3:
* Stronger vibration motor (IMHO) which is useful if you use the device in silent mode most of the time...
* Far more accurate display. I was surprised by the strange colors of the amoled display. I enabled the sRGB mode which mostly fixed this but I did not remember the colors being so different after switching from the Galaxy S1 to Nexus 4 and Nexus 5...
Altogether a very good phone, definitely worth the money and a good upgrade. Make sure to also buy the sandstone-cover if you decide to buy the OP3. The aluminium body makes this thing extremely slippery. And honestly it is still a thin device, even with the cover included.

They did do a fix, but I still dont think it would use all 6 gigs. I see it as more than future proof

Moto Z Play or Lg G5

Fellow Moto Z Play users.
I'm an owner of g3, thats looping in the boot....
I dont trust lg anymore.... G2 screen burns, g3 cracked cases and heat related issue, g4 bootloop and g5 ghosting burn ins
So i today i'm ordering my phone. I want to make sure device wont get defects... Lg g5 with us warrsnty is 400usd.
Moto z play is 450USD.
Lg g5 is cheaper, yet has a better camera and better cpu gpu.
Moto z play has a better batterylife,britgher screen, lower performance, better perceived quality by me(we had 2 of moto g, both didnt have any issues).
How good pr bad the moto play z cam?
Is it bad in bad light. PLEASE help me. I dont want to go over 400 usd. I would buy axon 7 but the cam made me like no.
But if axon 7 and moto play z has the same cam or similar performancr. I will go with zte axon 7. For the performance and design also qhd display and priced 350 usd

I have had zero issues with low light pics taken with my z, and I've had some very good phones in the past (Sammy, HTC). The low light pics can be a bit grainy, and that's where the z play does struggle, but honestly it isn't as big of a deal as some reviews have stated.
Personally having slightly less sharp low light pics, which is rare, is a small trade off to the awesome battery and moto ui. I just got sick of charging my phone 2-3 times a day, and having high end specs meant less and less to me. This phone is a beast all around, it'll be hard to eventually replace it

I am coming from a Note 4 the camera of the Z play is better. It misses only the OIS. But this helps only for free hand low light images. LG may be slightly better in low light because of the better aperture and the OIS. But it won't be that big difference as all the reviews let you think. I would not expect any differences in daylight.

The Axon 7's camera is better than the Z Play's - at least on paper - not by much, but OIS may help it win the upper hand. Both are capable of excellent, current flagship quality daylight shots. The Z Play has better post processing and overall the better software and I personally prefer the Z Play's daylight shots, but both are good - neither is great in low light, the Z Play creates more blurry pictures more frequently due to lack of OIS, the Axon 7 has OIS but worse software and post-processing and creates more over- or underexposed pictures. Since bad exposure ruins pictures less than blurriness, I'd say it wins the duel but only by a hair.
While the Moto Z Play has an excellent, loud and crisp front facing mono speaker and generally great audio quality, the Axon 7 blows it and just about any other phone out of the water with its front facing, Dolby ATMOS enabled speakers.
In many other ways, the Axon 7 is superior to the Z Play only on paper. The SD 820 is faster on paper, but runs hotter and is much more power hunger than the Z Play's SD 625 - the real life performance difference between the two is almost imperceptible in everything but VR and hardcore 3D gaming.
Battery life is no contest, with the Axon 7 being pretty average and the Z Play essentially defining a new standard and effectively lasting twice as long.
Both have excellent displays, with the Axon 7's QHD mostly shining when it comes to VR, but again, difference during regular use is mostly negligible.
Where it all falls down is software and reliability. The software experience on the Z Play is nearly perfect, with an incredibly stable, smooth and near stock experience enhanced only by actually worthwhile features. It also comes with absolutely superior reception, be that WiFi, mobile, GPS or even bluetooth. It's always fast, never overheats and is as reliable as a phone can possibly be. It also comes with relatively fast Android updates and long software support.
ZTE's phone comes with a questionable at best custom UI, crippled stock features, buggy software, an insane amount of bloat and ZTE has a history of abandoning software support for their phones almost instantly, even for their former flagships. The Axon 7 is better than anything they have made before so this may change, but I personally wouldn't rely on that "maybe".
Honestly, ZTE's software overall software experience should be prohibitive at this point. Get a OnePlus 3T instead or, well, get the Z Play - an utterly brilliant phone in everything but overall camera performance (where it is merely good but not great).
If camera trumps all, go for the G5, but you should already be aware of LG's build quality issues - that hasn't changed with the G5 by most accounts.

Yup it's worth buying if you do less photography in low light, but in the day light you won't see any difference..
Ans yes there are varieties in ROMs

i think it is. it has a bigger battery than the new models.

It is definately still worth buying.
I come from a Sony Xperia Z5 compact and when I compare pictures taken, I am surprised by Moto Z Play camera.................................................when sufficient light
Most of the reviews have mixed feelings about the camera, but I find it to be ok. Some issues with focusing, but you will get used to it.
I also use SnapCamera app as I find this to be very useful with the camera.
In low light, the camera is as bad as Z5 compact
Battery is excellent.
Screen is very good.
Phone respons very good, very fast and reliable.
Fingerprint sensor is brilliant.
Talk volume and sound is very good.
Music volume headphones (Bluetooth) is a bit low but it might as well be my BT headset causing this.
All in all a very good phone and cheap (at least compared to what is on the market here in Norway).

Sure. Bought last week this device for my wife too.
Love this device. It's so much better as our older x play.

Reviews say that it's good in day light but not so in low light.
You just need to know how to take a good shot.

I would definitely still have the Z Play on my short list. Had mine since November, and have been extremely happy with it. But if I was shopping today, I'd also give the Moto G5+ a close look. From what I've read, the G5+ has similar hardware to the ZPlay, including a nice fat battery, but the one big thing it is missing is the Moto Mods. I honestly don't use Moto Mods much at all (I have a battery mod, but rarely use it.) And the G5 is $100 cheaper (at current Amazon prices for 64GB G5). Both of these phones would be an excellent choice. Happy shopping!

The Moto Z Play... I went to the shop yesterday ready to buy it. I've been reading every review, every video, so I have a good idea of what to expect. Well, the phone is on one of those stands, inside a store, with what I consider OK visibility and I decided to take a few photos while the phone is on the stand as it provides very good stability. Let just say that the word APPALLED comes to mind. My opinion of the photos I took:
Positives:
- Good color reproduction
- Good dynamic range (from what is shown in the phone screen)
- Blazing fast
- Awesome photo app in terms of the GUI
Negatives:
- Horrible and I mean 50 Euro camera quality horrible detail capture. It was like a joke, I could not believe my eyes. I focused on a 4K TV display maybe 4 meters from where the phone was, and if I wouldn't zoom, the photo was average to OK at best. I took several photos, played with the settings, tried to focus on different things to see if it would make a difference, but no avail. It was that bad. I then took few photos with my Z3 and other than the richness in color, my phone from 2014 blew it out of the water. I was devastated. After so much buying intent and hours upon hours of reviews, the photo quality is as bad as people say it is. I've read that using a different camera app does help, but I would like to see a live comparison.
- The auto-focus is annoying AF. That thing kept trying to focus even though it was on a stand and I've already selected the focus point. I bet this is one of the reasons so many people get bad photos.
Under the light that was there, my Z3 took good photos if a little washed out, but this has been an issue with the Xperia brand and their camera app since they were introduced. The other phones I tried for camera like the Huawei with their Laica camera, were uninspiring. The S8 and the G6 blew everything out of the water, amazing photography. I could't test the P2's camera as someone had done a factory reset and the phone was in the settings out of box mode. The P2 is a beautiful phone.
I decided not to buy the Moto Z Play and wait on how the Moto X4 turns out before jumping ship. I want to mention that I have the original Moto X and that phone across the board (except on battery life and to some degree on camera quality) is exceptional. Also, my Moto X takes better photos than the Moto Z Play. Another thing that turned me down was the size, weight and shape of the Z Play. It is not the most comfortable phone to hold, specially when I had the Lenovo P2 right in front to compare. I really wanted to love this phone because of it's battery life. Plus I love the Moto Android interface. I can only recommend to anyone wanting to buy it to play with it in real life and take a few photos with it and hold it in your hand and decide. If taking photos is not your main thing, then I would consider it, but for me the balance of good to OK photos and the battery life are a must and sadly, the Z Play failed miserably on the camera department.

Yeah Moto cameras are crap,it's almost a meme now.I don't buy phones for their camera though so I can't really comment.Other than the "appalling" camera there is still a lot to love about the Z play
I guess it comes down to what you want from the phone.

I love a lot of what I read and the Moto Android implementation is the best for me aside of a Pixel/Nexus. I will go again with my old Moto X (which still works like charm, it was just not good ever in the battery department) to take some photos again and see if I can ignore that part of the phone. Still, considering that the Moto X4 is around the corner, I may wait. Could be the new Moto X4 will have good enough battery.
I mean, is it too much to ask to have a phone like the Moto X (original) with a camera like the S8 the G6 and a battery like the P2?

It actually kinda is .I would assume to keep costs down manufacturers give and take things

I've been trying to find a replacement for the past 6 months, but nothing I've tried is a better all round package than this. The OnePlus 5 was nice, but the battery wasn't fantastic and screen wasn't as good. The iPhone 7 I just tried was a whole level below this in performance, screen and battery.
Have any Z Play users tried the Z2 play? If so, was it worth the upgrade. I want to upgrade as I like changing phones, but nothing really compares still!

If I we're going to stick with the Z line, I'd go with the Z3 play rather than the 2.
But none of the newer Z phones feel like enough of an upgrade to me to make it worth the jump.
Based on what I've seen, the OnePlus 6T looks like the best next option to me. I've seen a bunch of screen shots showing 6-8h SoT with long day use, so while it's not up there with the Z play, it seems better than just about anything out there. Better camera is a bonus. I can live with no headphone jack. My biggest 'missing' feature is wireless charging. Price is definitely higher than the z line, but not by the huge margin it would take to get to an S9+ or pixel 3.

I am tempted by the 6T, no headphone jack does annoy me a bit though ...

I think to moto one power or moto z3 play next year when prices have gone down
Or a xiaomi , may be next redmi note pro, the note 6 pro was not really a big update vs Z play

Yup, same boat. At this point the only true upgrade without braking the bank would be a pixel 2 xl for the on-time updates, complete API support and truly superior camera and even then I would still get a bit less battery life out of it, Moto Z play truly is battery king.

I ordered the 6T yesterday, but got buyer's remorse and cancelled it. After only spending £231 on my Z Play, I don't really want to spend £529! Looking at used 6's on eBay, but the battery life seems a bit bad. I keep coming back to the Z2 Play... £199 brand new and I can keep using my turbo power pack. Is the performance much better? My Z play is getting a tad sluggish sometimes...

even if you did not have one already, keep in mind that it's packaged with a 2220mAh powerpack , in the box, so 5220 mAh

I have done a bit more research and I think I'm going to go for a OnePlus 6 or 5T (whichever one comes up as a better deal) I think the lesser battery life is worth it for the bigger screen, better camera and better performance.
Plus, buying used means that if in 3-6 months time I decide I need better battery again, I'll just sell it and get a Z3 Play because OnePlus phones hold their value very well.

Update on this. I have now purchased a pristine OnePlus 6 128gb for £379 (bargain!) I'll let you know how I get on compared to the Z Play

Honestly same, I love my Moto Z Play. If it weren't for the bad experiences I've had a couple times with security patches and the lack of software support I'd stick with it for much longer. But there are other options now that make what this accomplishes seem sub par. Don't get me wrong though. This phone is stable to a fault and I've got a lot of battery life to boot with the power pack attached as well. But The weight, the storage limitations, sub 4GB RAM (which I wouldn't mind if 2 or 3 of my apps weren't so hungry for the stuff) and the aforementioned lack of software support is starting to become more apparent. I'm probably going to keep the phone as a trusty backup though but I think I'm going to save up for the top-end model of the OnePlus 6T because it seems to have everything I love about this phone give or take a few brand specific quirks swapped out (Moto Gestures for Oxygen gestures) plus a better camera and just more overall fluidity. It kinda annoys me too about the headphone jack but I've been mostly using my Sony WH-1000XM3s which support AptX HD and LDAC so I won't be missing it too much plus I'm probably gonna spend a bit extra for all the sense of security stuff plus a case and bullets wired for the sake of convenience. However I'm terms of how much I love the Moto Z Play I'd say it's earned a place in my heart right next to my Nexus 5.
It has also earned a place on my shelf next to the N5 as well lol (sadly the Nexus 5's screen recently shattered finally so thusly the MZP takes it's place as my trusty backup should anything go awry.)

I realized I digressed haha, just really love the time I've had with this.
Actual advice I'd say is a real toss up for good choices. I really don't like Apple as a company but as of recently I'd say the iPhone X is a pretty good value in terms of optimization but the OS and insistent use of the lightning connector as opposed to USB-C is a deal breaker for me. If those don't mean much to you however I'd say it's a pretty good option.
Huawei has seen similar optimizations in terms of hardware what with the new 7nm SoC soaking up much less battery and pumping out much more performance but I don't know much of their software support in terms of updates or individual app developers considering their devices. I've heard the firmware and camera are amazing though this time around. Again, from my POV the heavy skin is a bit much for me with too many things I wouldn't use personally.
I can't honestly recommend the Pixel 3 devices due to their questionable specs for the price unless all you're looking for is a DSLR camera with optional onboard editing software. But of course software support is amazing.
ANY of the gaming branded phones (Xiaomi Black Shark 2, Razer Phone 2, and the ROG Phone) aren't half bad values disregarding the lack of history for their lines so you won't know if they have good software support at all. The skins are all pretty heavy UI wise minus the Razer Phone 2. Of all of them though I've only seen the Razer Phone 2 in person and it's pretty sleek tbh.
Sony is a mixed bag, I can't think of a specific model off the top of my head but they're generally amazing in one aspect and maybe pretty good in a couple of others but then tank every other category so that's your gamble to take if you wish.
Samsung kinda takes the same page as Google in you're paying a bunch but you're getting that heavy skin on the UI (with some admittedly neat features like Ultra Battery Saver) meh update support, and a nice camera. The difference being that you're also getting a huge battery and more RAM options so it's not as bad a value as the Pixel devices.
Then last but far from least would be the current king of value (due to the Poco F1 DRM failure) which would be the OnePlus 6T. Buying new from OnePlus it's the same price set as the OP6 but the 6T has a larger battery and smaller notch not to mention the first considerably fast in display fingerprint scanner. Dash charging is already a good bonus considering it's one of the fastest charging technologies I'm the phone market. As far as I've seen the phone scores 10s all around (I don't know about speaker performance however) Topping it off with the fact the UI has everything I love about Motorola's tweaking plus a couple more things. Setting the settings and other context menus to black to save a bunch of battery, more options for screen calibration, optimized to be light on the processor and battery to keep it from running down in your pocket. Big downer however is the loss of our dearly departed headphone jack, it's unfortunate but OnePlus said it was time. On the upside however it includes the dongle, the dongle includes a DAC, and the BT codecs included aren't bad either. OnePlus also made a statement not long ago that they're essentially going to be giving their devices Pixel/Nexus-like software support roadmaps further supported by Google's new software support policy.
Ah and frosting on top; It's not $1,000 for 256GB storage, 8GB RAM, and a huge AMOLED panel but about $650
Even with a case/bullets bundle with all the added warranty/damage protection stuff it's still under $1,000 at about $816 so that's why I'm picking the 6T myself.
All those considered however it's largely you're decision what you're most comfortable with getting based off your own experiences and judgement. I just hope it's a purchase you'll wholeheartedly love

OnePlus 6 arrived today.
So far is seems pretty good, it is so quick.
Screen isn't as bright, it is quite dim up until 100%, but not terrible.
Can't comment on the battery yet, but it won't be like the Z Play.

Update on this, a few weeks on.
Battery life is decent enough, I still get 1-2 days from it with my light usage, heavy usage gets about 7 hours SOT. I'd imagine the 6T is far better though.
It is very fast, I'm yet to notice any slow downs or lag at all, it does everything quickly.
The camera is a mixed bag.. the stock camera app I've found to be slow to capture, but GCAM fixed this. Quality of photos is decent, I still prefer my old Nexus 6P I think though, but this is definitely good enough for most people and if a big upgrade from the Z play.
The screen is fantastic, not as bright as the Z play, but it is lovely to look at.
I think I've covered everything that most people care about.
Overall, I am happy with the upgrade, I wouldn't want to go back to a small screen again I think. It isn't exactly incredible, but it seems to be a good all around phone. It isn't the best in any one category, but it is good in all of them!
The only thing I'd really like to be improved is the battery life, I miss not being about to guarantee 2 days between charges with heavy use!

Thanks for the follow up on this thread. I'm still on the fence. Had I caught the essential ph-1 deal for $170 on Black Friday that would have been it for me. Then I missed the Z2 Force for $99 yesterday - would have done that too.
Still bouncing around all the $400 - $500 phones. Currently leaning towards the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2s, but nearly impossible to find new with 128gb storage.
MZP is still just too good to let go - let's me be too indecisive about upgrades!

I nearly got an essential, but the average battery life put me off. I would say that for most people, it is worth stepping up the price and getting a 6T over a 6, just for the battery life (IMO). However, I am definitely not unhappy with battery life. It is probably on par if not a tad better than my old OnePlus 5

Yeah battery life was a concern for me - though I saw some fairly decent numbers on some of the threads here.
For me it's very much about "bang for the buck" when I get phones. MZP has been the best I've ever had in that regard. LG Optimus G and Moto E 2015 are right up there too.

My Z Play was £231 second hand, so not exactly a bargain, but stepping up to £370 for my OP6 was still a big step in the price. My Z Play will still get used very often as I switch between them frequently
