[Q] We have root? Great! What can it do?

Guys, please. The point of my thread is NOT whether the root claim is a lie or not. I am asking some questions about what can be done with it regardless, so please, if anyone knows inform me, but don't post guessing games of whether it is real or not.

So the Note 4 is actually my first device I've owned where I didn't have an unlocked bootloader. Because of this, I'm not sure whether all the modifications I've made to my past devices were enabled because I had an unlocked bootloader.
The only thing I know we can't do is install custom roms.
So... that leaves me with a question. What kinds of things can we do with just root?
On top of that, I have some specific questions (Might think of more later) :
Will root let us be able to install the auto-brightness control that the international version of the Note 4 has? If you don't know, you're able to adjust how low or high the auto brightness stages will go without turning off auto brightness on that version. It's so much nicer than having to turn off auto, adjust to where you want, and then remember to turn auto back on when you leave that environment.
Can we remap the capacitive multitask button to be a menu button instead? And to remap long-pressing that button to be the new multitask?

I'm assuming that they will. I suppose I should have worded my post different.
So it should have said, if we get safe strap we will be able to have custom roms.
It's not quiet the same as a unlocked bootloader though.

what proof?

Well regardless of whether we have custom roms through some other means, I'd personally most interested in those 2 questions I stated. That's honestly the things I want most with root at the moment.

Root has not been proven yet. Patience. Everyone is jumping the gun here.

My main and only real reason for wanting root is for Ad Block ESPECIALLY in youtube. I hate those commercials... You can install Ad Block without root (as I just did) but it just doesn't seem to work as well as it did with my last rooted device... Although I'm not sure if this is the app devs getting more creative with how they get ads through or possibly even a Lollipop things...
The other main reason was so Rocket Player could delete podcasts I had already listened too.. That was resolved with the Lollipop update so I am good to go there...
Some really like Root for Titanium backup to back up ALL app data and settings... This was handy for me back when I was flashing ROMS all the time but without that capability I don't see myself having much of a need for that since the games I play store the data in the Android folder which I don't need root to copy/backup
Another great thing that has come about the last year or so is Xposed modules.. These give you just about ANY customization you could possibly want but of course in order to use them you will also need root..... There is a great app that pulls the commercials from Youtube which I will be checking out if Root is actually here... As I said before I hate hate the ads... Not that I don't buy FULL versions of some of the apps if I find them useful because I do... But with things like Chrome and Youtube I really miss the option of them being disabled... Yes I know Firefox has this built in but I like y Chrome for the ability to send pages from my PC to my phone with the click of a button....
I find that the Note 4 with the help of Apex PRO has helped me gain many of the features I once wanted Root and the ability to flash things for... So now I am just looking for the ability to kill some ads....
There are also a few apps I would delete or freeze with Titanium Backup once we had that option... Turning them off is nice but I want the space back...

I'm with you on the adblock and it's one of the things I've been looking forward too also. The ads mobile gets is ridiculous, I'm fine with them on most websites on the computer but the mobile versions really kill some things.
Xposed is an interesting topic to me, I've never had any experience with it since I've never really needed it. It will be fun to see what they do. Thanks for the info.

Good point I forgot about being able to add multi window for non supported apps... It would be really nice for Tapatalk to support it

you can remove pre-loaded carrier apps that cause sluggish instability. improve battery life, and speed up application start times.

Mw-pen app enabler, ive been using since i got this phone. Let's you add apps to multi window. Should work for non system apps. It's worked for me. been my solution until we get root, if we do.

Just an fyi: You can disable bloatware without having root by using @gatesjunior's Debloater utility. Here's the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2998294

Hello just got my note 7 via Verizon ROOT HELP

Hello i just came from apple and would like to know an easy step by step guide to rooting..
i was a pro at jailbreaking but when it comes to rooting i can tell its a different ball game
would it also be possible to root on an imac ? and my carrier is Verizon in the USA

As far as I know you'll need Windows to run ODIN and Samsung USB Drivers, I could be wrong though. Just read through the stuff.

Your bootloader is locked. It's impossible to root atm.

Again, your bootloader is locked. So the simple answer is no.

in simple words, the bootloader is like the main gate to the internals of your phone, if locked, as on snpadragon based note 7, it is very, very difficult to root, the exynos note 7 are all open, there is at the moment only one method to root a snapdragon note 7, but I think it works only for AT&T

Now you learn the lesson... Never, ever, under any circumstance, buy a phone until you have verified it can be rooted. There had been an exploit for root with the SDs but Samsung fixed it in the replacement devices. You will hear people telling you root might still be attained and they are right but don't pin any hope on it.
Most people have been where you are and I number among them. The only thing you can do is sell the device, hope for root, learn your lesson. I'm sorry.

One difference is a lot of customizations are available In the basic Android software.... You may not have to root to get the features you want such as Free Hotspot (FoxFi), free music, peer to peer downloads etc...
May I ask what features you want on your phone that are only available if you "root" it??

3 minit battery, Viper4android and titanium backup are what I'm missing. ????

I agree 1,000% @Braca Ganon. There are more apps available today that allows you to access the same features as root so rooting isn't really a necessity as it once used to be. I've rooted every phone I've owned but I have no need to with this phone. Even on my Note 5 I saw no need to root. I was able to debloat carrier apps( Package Disabler Pro), use hotspot( FoxFi and PdaNet combo), change themes and icons( Samsung Theme Store) and much more, Plus, if you do decide to root, you can kiss Samsung or Android Pay goodbye. I also saw some had issues with the Iris Scanner after rooting as well. I personally love the fact that whatever feature I want to use on my phone I can do so with no FCs or trial and error. Custom Roms are based on the Devs likes and dislikes so what you think is a cool feature or function the Dev of whatever rom you are on may think its not and remove it. Once that happens, its more than just adding an .apk to priv-app or system apps, changing permissions and rebooting. It's more involved. This world is light years ahead of an IPhone jailbreak. No disrespect but a 70 year old woman can jailbreak an IPhone. LoL. Op read up on the benefits of root and what you think you need it for. You may be able to get the best of both worlds and still enjoy all the features and functionality the Note 7 has to offer. Samsung has done an excellent job coming into the times as far as root is concerned. They are making it so we don't have to root and can enjoy the benefits and features of these insanely expensive devices. I suggest you use the phone for a bit to its full potential and if you still think you need root then go for it but I'm almost certain you will realize you won't need it. Ultimately, its up to you.

There is no app or combination of apps which can globally remove all ads everywhere on your phone without root. For me removing ads by itself is more than enough to make root an absolute necessity. Nor can any non root app allow you to modify your build.prop as you see fit. Nor can any non root app allow the full functionality that Ti performs. I can go on here for quite a long time but where I'm going is that if you had at one time rooted your phones and don't need it now you hadn't been using the power of root. Root access and what you can do with it has not changed. Nor does any app without root access now do anything an app couldn't do 5 years ago because root access is root access and the lack now is no different than the lack then. Manufacturers have done things like added a close all but everything they have added altogether as a group is only a fraction of what you can do with root.
Whether a person needs or wants root depends on the person but there is no substitute for root and there never will be in the current paradigm. I applaud offering up such fixes as are available on the market. It may be for the OP these are enough but they will not be a substitute for root. As he appears to be new to Android I don't want him to walk away from here thinking that root isn't needed. It may be and it may not be but if you want to make android your bich it absolutely must be had.

I use Adguard to remove ads globally from my phone and it works better, to me anyways, than Adaway or anything equivalent but this is just my usage. Everyone's MMV. As far as using the power of root, I was one of the biggest believers in root. However, I was tired of the trial and error associated with it while running other Custom Roms( notice I keep saying I as this is just my experience). There is nothing more frustrating than going to use a feature and get a FC because either it was removed or the files associated with it were removed. Then you have to go into the archives of a stock rom and try to restore what was deleted and hope it works. At one point I just ran a fully stock rom with root and that worked for me but we both know how useless that is when you're rooted. At the end of my post I suggested to the Op, since he is new to Android, to use Android without it for a bit and see how he fares. If he still finds root is necessary than go for it. I would never tell anyone what to do with their device but you and I both know that root is becoming more of a hassle these days because of all the added security. As a newbie, this can scare the crap out of someone but ultimately it is the Op's decision.

I don't play Pokemon Go. I also didn't know you needed root to play that game. I thought it was merely an app.

Pokemon go can be played without any root... when the gps hack was available root WAS NOT required... it was a separate app through a different developer... it worked great for about a week, then niantic cut it off..
Once again I'm asking the OP why HE WANTS ROOT... He's coming from iphone...
Im not stupid enough to ask the Android central community as a whole why they want root... Ain't nobody got time for that

Yeah I read up on the newest hacks... it seems there's apps that don't require jailbreak but I don't know of any Android apps.. keep searching google. Someone will come up with an android hack before long... the first big hack was an android app

That only works on pre-recall PH1 Note 7's, you can't root the new Note 7's with PHE.

The odds of rooting OP5T

People, plz don't be mad at me.
I was a user of s7 edge, and did't root or install any mods in it to not lose Nox and the garantee.
Before s7 I had an Opo and bricked it installing to many roms.
So I lived 2yrs without following root/mod/rom world.
But I saw some news talking about some apps, like netflix, limiting access from users with rooted phones.
So, finally, my question is:
What apps are limiting access/functionality in rooted phones?
What would I lose if a root mine?

Probably payment platform apps dont work on root due to security issues. But due to systemless magisk root now you can hide root status using Magisk hide which enables us to use apps that dont work with root also.
About samsung knox is such a security measure designed by them like once you root your phone. The knox status changes to O x 3 or something which means modified status.
Than after that whether you come to stock unroot your phone do whatever you want you cant change the knox status. Only option some phones had is the kernal knox status being modified to fool it.
Apps like android pay samsung pay wont work because of that.
I have never used such payment app like samsung pay and all thats y i didnt had any problems with root.

I never have the patience to do anything with my s7e, it uses an Exynos processor, highly modified AndroidOs, and at that time (2yrs ago) I was already thinking in selling it.
I just give a Galaxy S product a try and although it's specs and high quality hardware (no one can deny it) I never liked it's usability and its edge screen.
Op5T has a worse screen (in specs) but it feels so much comfortable in my hand.
I'm really not missing my old S7e at all.

How many of you guys plan to root? Is it worth losing secure folder etc for easier themeing, magisk modules and better ad blocking?

I've been rooting all my android phones since my first one (galaxy mini) but I stopped rooting after I bought my note 9. Now I only root my backup phones.
Theres just too many good features that I'll miss if I trip my knox.

i think the question alot should research should be:

Every new galaxy phones I got didn't last a week without being rooted. It's my first time to buy a phone on its launching period. Most probably wont get rooted in a week or two, or maybe who knows hahaha.. depends on how our great devs would work on it lol

Secure folder works on rooted too. Still it needs some patch. I have posted screenshot of secure folder yday on my root guide thread. Samsung pay won't. Still trying to work spay on gear, it is working on N8/N9 but yet not able to fix on N10. But I am on holidays and no twrp so cant dig much.

Probably later.

Hey,
I was also a little bit frustrated that Adhell3 didn't work anymore, but I found an alternative that might help you. I am currently using my Note8 with an app called CCSWE App Manager (can be found on the playstore). This app with the coupled with the CCSWE App Manager Pro License (also found on the playstore but paid) app allows to disable packages, it uses KNOX. Not sure if it supports Note10, but works perfectly on my Note8.

I don't care about loosing Knox crap. I will root on day 1 of any device I own. Systemwide add blocking being my #1 reason. Also there is nothing like Titanium backup out there. IMO stock rooted is always great.

So I've have my 7T for about a month now and are very happy coming from a P 2xl.
Now I'm thinking should I or should I not root. When I had my Note 4 I rooted all the time but now that I think of it, even though it was kind of fun, I don't miss the bugs. On the positive side , due to so much bloat from Samsung, I liked the ability to delete and clean out the phone. Moving on the P 2 XL I didn't root because it was so clean and Google lets you delete practically everything you don't want. Now I'm with the 7T which seems to be another "clean" phone.
At this point , I'm looking for suggestions:
What are the pros and cons?

It's more like what you want to achieve with root.
It's a bit more complicated since there is no TWRP. And it case something goes wrong, it might be a bit tricky to get restore everything, but you should be fine since there's are plenty of instructions.
I've heard some banking apps does not work, but haven't experienced that.
Unlocking the bootloader makes the widevine Level L3, so you are limited to 720p Netflix.

I don't think it is necessary to root because you can debloat with adb commands. If you root the banking apps won't work for example and because of rooting you expose yourself to a security risk

I tried it, didn't end up working well, had to use the OnePlus recovery tool
Also as for banking apps stopping working, use magisk hide, may also work on Netflix but not sure

I'm usually a big fan of rooting, but have been using my 7t for a week without it and don't miss it. Brave browser and adb debloat has accomplished most of what I need root for.

In my case answer was simple. Titaniumbackup requires root. Not all apps have import/export settings or do so completely. Adaway, Vpn hotspot (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=be.mygod.vpnhotspot&hl=en_US), and some other apps I use also require root. Hell, I could of gotten a samdung product (on promotion) for a few bucks more. Root or bust !!!

I rooted the phone a month or so back to use a custom kernel, install AdAway and even tried out OmniROM which was quite buggy and essentially a step down from OxygenOS. More importantly, it wasn't worth it because of losing Widevine L1 which is needed in my case for Netflix and Prime Video, as I occasionally connect it to other display devices over Type-C. Banking apps mostly worked with Magisk Hide but then some of them were a bit glitchy.
Moreover, it was a bit of a pain to restore OxygenOS as the fastboot roms fail the integrity check and the only option is to do a factory flash. I eventually settled on debloating through adb and using Blokada for adblocking which more or less serves its purpose.

I root on the first day. Mainly for adaway , viper4android and theming. Its just way easier to achieve these with root .

Adaway is essential.
Root provides you with control.

Was just coming on to post exactly the same point. I rooted no issues and my banking apps work if I use Magisk Hide so its all good

I tend to agree with you. Please explain " adb commands". I've heard of them but have no idea how to use them. Plus what is the bloat in this phone? What items should be gone?
