How do I set up my email so that it leaves a copy on the server so when I get to my laptop the message can be downloaded? I do my email on my laptop but need to be able to receive / send email from my HTC as well. Thanks!
By using POP account setup. I have POP on my TP2 and on my home computer... On my home computer I have set on the account settings that when I remove the email in my Outlook it will remove it from the server...

So ... what is the setting on your TP2 that specifies, "do not remove from server"?
There is a setting on the edvanced settings menu when you setup the account, or go to edit the account settings.

use imap instead of pop. pop downloads messages and wont mark them as read on the server or delete them after a month or whenever you set it, and some pop clients delete the email from the server after its pulled. imap is much more advanced and if you can get imap-idle you get push email support.
Leave Email on Server, and other Advanced Settings
I have been frustrated with this issue also. I use my phone for POP email when I am away from my computer. It is almost always business, and I need to keep records of communications in one place. Using Outlook, I archive all old emails to a network server. Since installing my current ROM, I have been unable to find access to the email size, signature and delete handling options. As a result, emails that I delete from the phone also get deleted from the server before I download them to my PC. This is a big problem since I sometimes delete messages from my phone without taking action - planning to deal with them the next day from the office. Dealing with multiple email accounts and up to 50 messages per day makes the phone very cluttered unless I regularly clear them out.
I just discovered the "back door" into the old WinMo style advanced email settings using a tip from another thread regarding email signatures.
I am using the Energy ROM (08-Sep-10, which I love). Here is how to get to the advanced email settings:
1) From any email Inbox (not the Sense screen) tap Menu/Tools/Options to get to the Messaging settings page.
2) Tap an email account on the list.
3) Tap "Send/Receive Schedule".
4) Tap "Advanced Settings" at the bottom of the screen.
5) Choose your option under "When deleting messages:"
Other advanced options are also available this way, including email signatures for each account, as well as download size and scheduling.
I'm happy again!
Tim
Thank you for resurrecting this 9 month old thread.
I too thank you for posting this. I needed to change this on one of my accounts but had forgotten where the change needed to be made. You saved me lots of time searching.
Again, thanks much for the direction.
Currently im getting 2 notifications for the same email, the mail app lets me download the attachments i get , i cant seem to do that on the gmail app, just lets me preview the music i get sent and not download it for example.
so basically which of the two is better, can i stop getting two notifications at once, if i remember correctly the gmail app seems to always receive the mail 1st, is there away to download attachments from the gmail app?
If you check out my thread here, there are some problems with both the Gmail application and the Mail application.
If you have to pick one or the other to use exclusively, I would use the Mail application. (ie, can save attachments, can click links, can select text to copy to clipboard, can attach files other than photos)
You can stop getting 2 notifications at once. Do one of the below.
To stop Gmail notification:
Open Gmail application - Press Menu key - Tap "Settings" - Toggle "Email notifications"
To stop Mail notification:
Open Mail application - Press Menu key - Tap "More" - Tap "Notification settings" - Toggle "Email notifications"
you do realise that when you tap preview in the google app, it actually downloads the file anyway, right? well, for some files it does. Pictures are downloaded anyway. i would assume music should be the same.
you should then find it in downloads in the browser....

This does not work for all files though. It annoys me that .zip files and basically every "unknown" format is not available for preview/download through the standard Gmail app. I have been using Gmail in the browser to download these earlier, but if it works in the default Mail program, its a godsent.
I moved ovr to the mail app a few minutes ago, seems more comprehensive BUT I am a bit concerned about battery life as the sync logo in the notification is constantly on ...
Also if I use the Mail app with exchange to do calendar as well do I get the colour coded calendars as I like to know what belongs to what calendar ?

It is probably still syncing your mail. Let it be for a while.
I am wondering what uses most battery, Exchange Push from Gmail, or regular Gmail push?
Why would you use Exchange to sync you gCal? You get colour coding by default in the standard gCal sync. I have disabled the autosync of Gmail, and am now using Exchange Push instead.
No raeson for using the gCal to be honest, was just trying to extend battery.
Mail app seems quite comprehensive . I like it just need the bloody sync logo to stop!
Don't need to worry about the sync logo if it's not rotating. It's only actively syncing when it's rotating.
Thanks guys ...

whats the advantages of using the xchange server? i just signed in regularly, and seem to get mail fast no issues, ?
also as google mail does not have a widit i have the normall mail program on one of my home screens, but the normal mail program recives mail once every 15 mins, the google one seems to recive instantly, can i set the htc mail program to get mail the same way google mail does?
You have to set it up as an ActiveSync Exchange account instead of a POP3/IMAP account to get push support
You then go in to the Mail settings and choose Push in the interval settings.
oh ok, is that easy to set up lol?

It's just you. I've been syncing with Google's Exchange server ever since my Touch Diamond days. Follow the directions in the following link to the letter.

thanks man, the default server name was wrong, changed it to m.google and it worked thanks bro
should i turn off any gmail app settings to save battery or anything now? , on the settings>sync options i have both the same email on active sync and google syncing, can i turn the good one off?
Sorry to be dim, but I assume I need to change a setting, somewhere. Can anyone please tell me how I can stop messages I have deleted on my desktop popping up on my Desire five, or even ten, minutes later?
Thanks, in advance...
I'm guessing you are talking about emails here? if so, it depends on what type of account you have setup, eg. POP or IMAP.
POP will download each and every message to all mail clients (desktop and phone), unless you have either selected the option to 'delete messages on server' or manually go into the main mailbox and delete the message from there.
IMAP (if your mailbox supports it) is the best option if you view your messages using multiple devices- it keeps all the messages sync'd with each other.
If you're using Exchange then you may find you have cached exchange mode enabled which would cause a delay in the message being deleted from the server.
The option in Outlook 2007 would be found in :-
Tools > Account Settings
Select Exchange account and click change, there will be a check box that will allow you to enable\disable
Hello, I'm looking for the simplest way to check the email on my Desire.
I don't like autosync: if I have time to check the email I'll open the app by myself and I don't feel the need to be notified right now (also, I save the battery )
On the iPhone I used to simply tap on "Mail", then I could quit it and turn off the screen and wait for a notification (vibrate or sound) if the connection was slow.
On the Desire I have to open Mail (or Gmail), push the 'menu' button, tap 'refresh' and wait without exiting the application because I couldn't find a way to set a notification if I check email manually.
Is there some kind of widget/app that allows me to tap on it, turn the screen off and wait for a vibration if there is a new one?
I tried k-9, no luck.
Thank you!
The HTC mail app auto syncs when opened?
you can just add a bookmark of your mail to homescreen. this is what i do instead of facebook app. and there is also an option to refresh mail when you open app.

Yes it does, Just use the htc mail widget then configure it to never auto sync!
It does auto refresh when you open it, but most of the time I find it in background and that doesn't count as a new open...
Also, it doesn't vibrate on new messages if checked manually and I have a "bug" with gmail: it saves every sent message in the IMAP/sent folder and I see it twice on gmail on the desktop. Does someone know how to solve it?
Will try the widget for the next few days as suggested.
Thanks

Hey guys. New owner here as of today. Anyway....I downloaded the Gmail app and setup my account. When I go to "share" a photo ect, it asks me if I want to email it using the default email program that came with the phone. Anyway to force it to use the Gmail account I already set up?
Thanks.
Enter the gmail app. Go to settings. Select the account you set up. There will a check box to set this account as the priority account.

That option is not available on my phone. There is a "make priority inbox the default inbox.." but nothing to set account as default.

Ok here is how I did a work around. Setup a gmail account in the default email program. Turn sync off. Setup Gmail app account. When I send photos I still have to select the default but that account will not receive the mail only send it. Odd that you cant select the Gmail app as default, unless Im missing it.
Update. I did a complete reset of the phone and now the Gmail app shows as an option for sharing. Go figure. Thanks
