Microsoft has create such burden with all these renamings:
Windows Phone -> Windows Mobile
8.1 - > 10
Tech Preview, anniversary update, fast ring, slow ring, insider, blab la bla
When I choose phone to buy, I wanted something that works, Android needs a lot of fixing, custom rome, correct apps, etc. iPhone was too expensive and not very windows friendly. So I bought this Nokia/Microsoft/Lumia 930
And now I’m on Windows Phone 8.1 it doesn’t work with my Garmin watch. I want to update to Windows Phone/Mobile 10 whatever it is.
I don’t want to install Windows Insider app, as you accept some crazy privacy agreement, all you data(file names, sms, etc) is transferred to MS.
I heard that there is an anniversary update, which should be kind of stable 10 version, but no idea how to install it.
Can somebody please help me to understand what is going on?
Download the Upgrade Advisor app in the store. This app will allow your phone to be upgraded to Windows 10 Mobile.

It's understandable, but have you read privacy statements? all your location, texts, voice will go to MSFT. Is there a way to get 10 without it? Like official updates as we used to have in WP 8.1?
Also, what ring to pick ? and what is Anniversary update? what is redstone? For outsider it takes just too much time to understand all this crap

Redstone is the codename for the Anniversary Update, and of (at least) the next two major Windows 10 updates, to be released in early and late 2017.
The Anniversary Update is the name of the major update to Windows 10 that was released a month ago.

So should we now use just "Windows 10" not "Windows Mobile 10" because it's the same thing?
And Windows Insider is the only way to get new update ?

By "Windows 10" i mean all of Windows 10, that is, desktop and mobile and iotcore.
And, it's not the only way, you can modify registry with an interop unlock or install packages manually if you have them.

Upgrade Advisor != Windows Insider, there's no ring to pick from, it just allows the upgrade.

Thank you for this clarification. It's very hard for outsider to understand anything. Next phone - iPhone

I thought that WM 6.1 is out already, after reading all the articles and seeing the video demonstrating the OS. do u guys have any good guess when it might come out, i would love to see the Dash with that kicking ass home screen and improved ROM.
I have been curious to know also. Everything I have read states that Microsoft will officially announce it in February, and new devices will start shipping with it in May. Given that, I would expect updates for older devices by year's end. I hope that the Dash gets the update.
Windows Mobile 6.1
Looks similar to what HTC and T-Mobile did with the T-Mobile shadow device. Changed the way the user navigates through the menus to make it "easier" anded a new homescreen and that was about it. I cant wait for win mobile 7 next year or so hopefully.
So the WM 6.1 will be announced in Feb 11:
The first vital news item is exact time and place of Microsoft's press conference, where, most likely, the Windows Mobile 6.1 will be announced:
Mobile World Congress 2008: February 11, 2008
15:00-16:00 Microsoft Press Conference
Microsoft Executive Meeting Centre
Hotel Catalonia Plaza
(organized by Microsoft Mobility Team at Weber Shandwick - a PR company that Microsoft uses)
Most likely the main speaker will be Pieter Knook (the highest in hierarchy manager responsible for Windows Mobile and not for other unrelated divisions) together with some other top managers from Microsoft and Microsoft partner companies (operators and manufacturers).

Any Updates
I am seeing a lot of 6.1 related posts for other phones, but nothing on the Excalibur. Does anyone have any updates/links for a 6.1 ROM for the Excalibur?
i'd love an update too. i read on another site a quick writeup. they said for smartphone the 6.1 update will help to resolve (note: not fix entirely) the memory leaking issues. that's my biggest hope, that and an updated IE... though with the new opera coming out, it might be outdone before it even has a chance anyway.
Windows Mobile 6.1 is out, emulator images also
Here is the official press release for Windows Mobile 6.1
EveryWAN Remote Support and Mobility Manager already work on those OS flavors.
You can download the Windows Mobile 6.1 emulator images.
Don't play too late with it this night !
I just got this mail from Microsoft notifying that they will discontinue the services for My phone and Marketplace for all Windows Mobile 6.x customer..

yep, it's true. That's already a forum for that in the window's main section.
Don't care, never have used it... in Android or WP7 works pretty well, but for WM 6.5 is better to just google what you want and download it.
I was wondering, tht when buying a new smartphone if I go with windows based OS on mobile, will I be able to run any software tht can run on windows based desktop computer? If not, such functionality is expected to come with forthcoming Windows 8 mobile?
PS: I wana run my live stock market terminal on mobile phone.
Since ver 7, the os is no longer called windows mobile; its now called windows phone. but to answer your question, no you can't run desktop applications on windows phone (or windows mobile for that matter) and this is unlikely to change.
That said I'm sure you can find another application to achieve whatever it is that you're after on the marketplace...
:-( my all needs are getting completed with an smartphone, but i guess eventually i will have to buy a laptop as well... just to run my stockmarket software.... Damn and they are telling smartphones (Like SGS2 etc.) are quickly replacing laptops...
PS: Wht is the latest ver. of windows phone called and, what is the windows phone marketplace url (Kind of new to smartphones)
Well for a lot of people smartphones or tablets can replace computers, most people aren't stockbrokers!
The latest version of Windows Phone is 7.5 Mango, which is currently at RTM stage - i.e. released to OEMs pending approval for new devices and upgrades to existing devices.
The Windows Phone Marketplace can only be accessed via the phone or via the Zune desktop software. The Zune software comes highly recommended from me, it's a very, very good media management software and I can't live without the wireless sync function anymore!
You can browse the marketplace through Zune without owning a Windows Phone device.
Perhaps you could let the community know what it is exactly that you need to do and someone might be able to suggest something?
EDIT: As you're new to smartphones, from a usability perspective Windows Phone 7 would be an excellent choice for you - it is simply brilliant to use, the interface is understated and elegant and the lack of pointless graphics makes it both simple and quick. Microsoft have clearly put massive effort into making Windows Phone highly usable and have surpassed pretty much all expectations, especially with the 7.5 update, which brings in a huge amount of functionality. A lot of people try and put Windows Phone down having never used it, because it's one of those things that needs you to spend 10 minutes with it to understand - but once you've spent 9 minutes with it, everything else just seems ridiculously complicated.

Silverlight in Windows
Hi
Silverlight apps are currently available in Windows and I think that the concept being put out there at the moment is that Windows 8 will run the same apps as Windows Mobile 8.
Nobody knows if this will become a reality or not.
Cheers

The best thing for you to do would be to find a mobile version of the software you are trying to run. Then get the device that runs that particular software.
The closest you'll come to running your "exact" software on a mobile device is to get a Windows based tablet or laptop. But to run your stock software on a smartphone, you will need the "mobile" version of that software, if it exists.
Also, check to see if your stock-terminal application is web-based. If it is, you may be able to access what you need with ANY smartphone through the smartphone's web browser. That means your "stock terminal" would work on Windows Phone, iPhone, Android, etc.

This is not yet available and won't be until fall. Tango is an intermediate Update which only brings some Bugfixes, additional MMS support and that's pretty much it.
What you want to have on your device is Windows Phone 7.8 which will include the new start screen which won't be finished before fall.
Now that 7.8 is round the corner (may be 1-2 months more), I dont think its good idea to update to WP Tango. I would rather wait for 7.8 for my Omnia W.
a) 7.8 will come out after 8.0 itself
b) Update path to 7.8 goes through Tango.

Yes.
What's the issue? Just wait for your phone to offer you Zune update and boom, you are updated in 5 minutes.

7.8 is still quite far away (the presentation said that 7.8 would be released after 8.0, and we have no date for 8.0 yet) so we don't know how the upgrade path will be.
But, historically, upgrades have been incremental on Windows Phone - you have to upgrade to each version before going to the next. Zune has handled this automatically until now.
So it is fairly safe to assume that you will need to upgrade to Tango before 7.8, even if only for a second...
PS: the Tango deployment started last week and is apparently still throttled - most people have not yet been given the option of upgrading...
I got 3 upgrades on my Samsung Omnia W after trying forced steps. First Phone got upgraded to 8112, then in 2nd try with same steps it upgraded to 8773. Then it automatically performed 3rd upgrade when it installed some update provided by Samsung.
Hope 7.8 would not need such forced steps
ookk guys thanks to all : Risata:: Risata:: Risata:: Risata:: Risata:: Risata:
If your phone is not officially supported by Windows 10 (Lumia 520, 525, 620, 630, 635 (512 MB), 720, 820, 920, 925, 1020, 1320, ...) and you do have Windows 10 installed, do NOT use the WDRT (Windows Device Recovery Tool) which will install Windows 8.x on your device. Since Microsoft no longer offers Windows 10 Threshold releases for unsupported devices in the Release Preview Ring chances are that you'll be unable to update to Windows 10 again.

seems to be a fact since ms introduced the release-preview-ring for redstone. we will see if they offer something like a legacy ring soon
otherwise: still no problem, or lets say still no problem to spoof the devices to get either th2 or redstone
Changing the registry might be beyond users that were only accustomed to joining the Release Preview Ring with the Windows Insider app till now. Some also might not even try out of fear. Thus this warning.
Thanks for the heads up!

thats one of the downsides of the insider-programm. ms let anyone in, thus many many many many people doing stuff they dont know jack**** about. they should have done a simple tech-survey before they let some into the insiderprogramm
Lets go an other route. Instead of keeping people out we should do our best to educate those, that aren't aware of possible side effects and pitfalls. In this sentiment, a call for help: Gather information!
- which devices is WPinternals able to handle?
- what SLB3s are available? Download links?
- Write up a tutorial on how to edit the phones registry using mass storage mode and regedit!
- Gather confirmed info on what unlock methods are available for what RMs!
- Anything to add to the first post? Something to clarify to make it better understandable?
- ...
- ... Profit!
Don't be worry guys, Custom ROMs coming ....
Cool if custom ROMs can be released, but it may be too late for some phones stuck on WP8.1 if they are not hackable. Obviously old Lumias are hackable, but what about 630 for example? Also, some way to install custom ROMs without going back to WP8.1 is sorely needed now.
the 630 for example is no problem either, we dont have any engineering bootloader for it yes. but it has a sd-slot, so no problems to fool around with registry tools to spoof the device id. since its 512mb redstone shouldnt work, but there should be a few devices out which are getting 10 but not redstone as well. so simple spoof it as one of them and get th2 (speaking of the situation next week, right now you could use any "modern" lumia settings to get th2 via upgrade advisor). but no way to build custom roms, thats only supported on 520, 521, 525, 620, 625, 720, 820, 920, 925, 928, 1020 and 1320
Hmmm I used WDRT couple of days back. And now I am stuck with Windows Mobile 8.1. Any chance of getting Windows 10 Mobile back on my L720?

Yes, you can use wpinternals to unlock the bootloader, gain full filesystem access, and spoof the registry with a phone model supported for W10M. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/windows-phone-8/development/windows-phone-internals-unlock-t3257483

They will replace th2 with rs1. We wont be able to upgrade to W10 using insider or upgrade advisor. We're gonna stuck in WP 8.1 forever.
would you please read my post completely? atm its still possible and in the future it will be still possible to get th2 cause not every device will get the anniversary update (looking at some chinese oem devices). and rs1 runs way better even on ancient devices like the 920 than th2. and right now you still are able to get th2 and back it up with wpinternals if you want to reflash it in the future

Sorry, I didnt mention that I'm talking about 630. I don't think ms will add a new ring like "TH2 for legacy devices" because they really wanna get rid of Nokia devices.
we dont know that, but as i said: there will be still devices which got th2 officially but will not get rs1. u simply need to spoof your device to that. and th2 might be even a needed hop to go from 8.1 to 10 rs1. so dont panic

Microsoft don't expect divvys to tamper with tools they don't understand , a simple insider upgrade is divvy safe, theres no need for any tech surveys or whatever, theres nothing in the OS that can break the phone, only ppl who decide to play the tools to crack and edit the registry are at risk. You don't need to be an insider to play with those tools either. Think about it. The wdrt is very powerful, you can spoof your phone and model ID if you wish, (NOT RECOMMENDED FOR DIVVYS) downside of that is ...loading an OS that could be slightly modified and potentially brick your device
Microsoft clarification
Earlier this year when we launched Windows 10 Mobile, we announced a series of changes to Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Program, including details of our launch of Windows 10 Mobile as well as changes to the supported Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview devices.
With the upcoming release of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, the Release Preview ring is moving to Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview build 14393. This change will have some impact on unsupported device:
As stated before, unsupported devices will not receive any builds or updates newer than 10586.x
Unsupported devices will not be able to select any Windows Insider Preview rings in the Windows Insider app
Updates to apps and services may not be available for unsupported devices and in some cases may limit certain experiences
Unsupported devices can still use the Windows Device Recovery Tool to recover to Windows Phone 8.1, but will not have the option to return to Windows 10 Mobile.
As always, we appreciate our Insiders and thank you for your participation in the Windows Insider Program.
