I thought that WM 6.1 is out already, after reading all the articles and seeing the video demonstrating the OS. do u guys have any good guess when it might come out, i would love to see the Dash with that kicking ass home screen and improved ROM.
I have been curious to know also. Everything I have read states that Microsoft will officially announce it in February, and new devices will start shipping with it in May. Given that, I would expect updates for older devices by year's end. I hope that the Dash gets the update.
Windows Mobile 6.1
Looks similar to what HTC and T-Mobile did with the T-Mobile shadow device. Changed the way the user navigates through the menus to make it "easier" anded a new homescreen and that was about it. I cant wait for win mobile 7 next year or so hopefully.
So the WM 6.1 will be announced in Feb 11:
The first vital news item is exact time and place of Microsoft's press conference, where, most likely, the Windows Mobile 6.1 will be announced:
Mobile World Congress 2008: February 11, 2008
15:00-16:00 Microsoft Press Conference
Microsoft Executive Meeting Centre
Hotel Catalonia Plaza
(organized by Microsoft Mobility Team at Weber Shandwick - a PR company that Microsoft uses)
Most likely the main speaker will be Pieter Knook (the highest in hierarchy manager responsible for Windows Mobile and not for other unrelated divisions) together with some other top managers from Microsoft and Microsoft partner companies (operators and manufacturers).

Any Updates
I am seeing a lot of 6.1 related posts for other phones, but nothing on the Excalibur. Does anyone have any updates/links for a 6.1 ROM for the Excalibur?
i'd love an update too. i read on another site a quick writeup. they said for smartphone the 6.1 update will help to resolve (note: not fix entirely) the memory leaking issues. that's my biggest hope, that and an updated IE... though with the new opera coming out, it might be outdone before it even has a chance anyway.
Windows Mobile 6.1 is out, emulator images also
Here is the official press release for Windows Mobile 6.1
EveryWAN Remote Support and Mobility Manager already work on those OS flavors.
You can download the Windows Mobile 6.1 emulator images.
Don't play too late with it this night !

I know this is about a smartphone-wm6 version, but do you think, there will soon be releases of wm6-ppc-versions? *official?*
erm of course..
cingular promised to release wm6 upgrades officially for the 8525, blackjack, and treo 750 by summer time 07.
Operating system maker Microsoft is currently working hard on delivering the next version of Windows Embedded CE in November and on tapping the lucrative market for service-enabled devices. Kevin Dallas, general manager of Microsoft's Windows Embedded Business group, said the company plans to launch Windows Embedded CE 6.0 R2 on Nov. 15 at the Embedded Technology 2007 show in Yokohama, Japan, known as one of the "world's largest trade show and conference for embedded system designers and managers."
The new operating system will be the foundation for service-oriented devices, Dallas told eWEEK in an interview. Windows Embedded CE 6.0 will feature support for Web services on devices, VOIP (voice-over-IP) video technology capabilities and Internet Explorer updates. "We're clear on the opportunity moving forward and we're going to deliver an operating system to go into an intelligent device," Dallas said.

Any chance we can get this to work on Trinity? I have been told that upgrading to 6 at the moment is pointless as it is very slow, whilst this release fixes that and is the same speed as WM5.

I haven't noticed much change in speed although it uses more program memory.
It is much slower than WM5.

You are the first one to hear something like that...
Are you serius???
When you are in a clean install try to open the windows folder (with hidden file's enable) in wm5 and try it in wm6 to understund and see what you say.
After that post the result's...
He he
I don't think wm6 is slower than wm5 at least not the versions I have been trying out over the months, plus the icons on wm6 are kind of different and smoother so this could cause the system to lose some speed.
As for the battery, both last the same to me,these are just my personal experiences.
If you ask me wm6 is faster I can notice just by opening the file explorer.

What?!?!?!?...I don't think so...In my opinion, WM6 is way faster...
This is something that has been so debated...
I believe this is talking about real WM6. What we consider WM6 is just a nicer looking WM5 with a few changes. I believe WM 5.2.2 is what WM6 is for us, and the WM6 they're talking about is the real deal.
WM6 is quite faster than WM5
The best way to emphasize the performance difference between WM5 and WM6 is effectively to browse files in the system library.
Difference is huge...
What your talking about there is accessing lists of files, what we are talking about is opening times of applications etc. as in performance benchmarks. WM5 on Trinity is much faster than WM6 in its current form. Hense the reason for the new update from MS.
Windows Embedded CE has nothing to do with Windows Mobile.
Beg to differ as this is will be for both for devices and for mobiles

Microsoft reportedly has been talking more than usual about the future of embedded Windows OSes. Recent revelations range from the short-term -- the release of "Windows CE 6.0 R2" next month -- to a long-term vision of "MinWin," the stripped-down kernel that will be at the heart of "Windows 7."
Windows CE 6.0 R2, XP Embedded SP3, Vista Embedded
Regarding Windows CE 6.0 R2, Kevin Dallas, general manager of Microsoft's Windows Embedded business group, used an interview with our sister publication, eWEEK.com, to reiterate plans first revealed in his keynote at September's Embedded Systems Conference (ESC) in Boston. The new version of Windows CE will feature new support for Web services on devices, new VoIP (voice-over-IP) video technology capabilities, and Internet Explorer updates, he said.......................

I just saw this article today. I guess it'll be time to start cooking some 6.1 ROM's soon
Most Microsoft-powered smartphones being released today are powered by some form of Windows Mobile 6, but it seems like the popular mobile operating system is due for another update. It's not exactly Windows Mobile 7, but the upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.1 will bring about a whole new user interface similar to the one found on the Vodafone Treo 500v.
The innovation is being called a "carousel." Instead of launching a series of applications, you are asked "what do I want to do today?" Along the top of the display are a number of "zones" which you navigate between by going left or right. Within each of these zones are various "actions" and these are accessed by moving up and down.
Other updates to be included in Windows Mobile 6.1 are improved WiFi connectivity, Exchange integration, and better implementation of Bluetooth technology. The announcement of the "new" OS is rumored for February with an actual launch on actual handsets tentatively scheduled for May.

Is it? I thought I finally had a scoop for you guys. Sorry if it's old news, but it sounds like an interesting change coming...
drgopoos the mobile jammer on this site http://www.onlygizmos.com/ would be nice to have
the bad part is that it looks like it may not be designed for phones with a touch screen (smartphone only not pocket pc) so the upgrade may not work on the hermes.

This is for Windows Mobile Standard (smartphone), not professional (pocket pc phone) hence why it doesnt seem like it's gonna work well with touch screen.

I am happy to use it on WM professional all the same. I use softkeys and D-Pad a lot to navigate the screen anyway. So bring it on!!!
dear guys, i know you are the best in upgrading our smartphones, do you know if there is, or soon will be an upgrade to wm6.1 for s620???
tnx
Not yet.. but I think that soon it will come to S620.
We are all waiting for this update
I actually got to play with a Windows Mobile 6.1 Dash but it still seemed to lag a fair amount. Just had a flashier home screen. Everything seemed to be the same. They added Copy and Paste as well.

Oh man that's great news!!! I am excited. At least that confirms that there is a very high chance we will have to upgrade. Hopefully it will become more stable and not have memory leaks.
Thanks Jamerican....
did you check the new PIE how is it, does it have flash???
How about threaded sms like the PPC version has??
i'm actually really curious about wm6.1 too. I know it's out already, so where are the ROMs at? BTW, does anyone have access to HTC's downloads for the S620-621? When I attempted to register my unit with the serial # at their site, it wouldn't let me since it knew it was T-Mo Dash instead.
EDIT: well a quick search on google yielded this interesting result:
http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=13800
I guess that's why we're not seeing any wm6.1 devices anytime soon...
even so, here at xda-developers you can see upgrades to 6.1 for some devices, so i guess we´ll just have to wait a little bit, but its going yo be here i´m sure
Google is your friend. Many websites have covered the new WM6.1 features. Basically it comes out to these:
* Threaded SMS - A Chat like function for your SMS Inbox
* Zoom out in Pocket IE - Enables Page overview mode and better navigation
* One Note included in Office Mobile
* Running Programs tab in Settings > Memory replaced to a better Task Manager. (But the previous running programs tab was much simple and easier)
* A new Managed Programs menu
As you can see, no mention of flash incorporation in PIE. Personally, I won't upgrade until it is as fast as the HTC ROM I'm using now. I am, however, really excited about threaded SMS.
wm6.1 does exist for the dash.
Lets put it this way. People have HTC excalibur running wm6.1. 6.1 adds a new home screen, better IE (much better IE), copy & paste, new version of active sync, etc, etc. WM6.1 is also faster. I'm not sure when this will be avaliable to everyone... but it does exist.
Actually I tried it at a M$ event at my school. The lady said it would take at least 10 months for consumers to see it. That does not include carrier customization etc. Pissed me off.

Yup, i'll vouch for this. I have open touch v3 on my wing and love it. Sometimes i like to go out with my dash since its slimmer and wow its like night and day how slow it is. Even with the new HTC rom that was posted...
Am I missing something here? When did the Wing get a system that isnt released yet? I am confused

WM 6.1 is alive and well on the PPC platform. First batch of WM 6.1 Professional ROMs hit the scene about a week and a half ago and I may be wrong about this but I believe the wing (HTC Herald) was the first to get it from our fine chefs here on XDA-DEV. Still waiting on a 6.1 Standard version for our favorite non-touchscreen devices (HTC Excalibur etc)...
Also don't forget that fortunately/unfortunately the touchscreen devices are way more popular than the non-touchscreen devices.
Personally I believe my T-Mobile Dash running the HTC ship rom is way more stable than any other Windows Mobile device I have ever owned, and I've had quite a few as can be seen in my sig.
Thats interesting, I had no idea!
I don't want to waste time flashing my Dash with a cooked 6.0 ROM (HTC ROM) if 6.1 is only a few weeks away. Any estimate from the ROM cookers on a 6.1 release for the Dash?

On my blog, I recently wrote an article about some of the reasons why Windows Mobile 6.5 is still useful even with Windows Phone 7(.5) out. So with all of the news about Mango coming soon, do you think that Windows Phone 7(.x) has enough features to go ahead and completely replace Windows Mobile 6.5 or is there a reason why you still use Windows Mobile 6.5? For me (even though I do use Windows Phone 7.x), it's games and customization.

Update: I just got a part 2 of my article online and here's the link: http://catholictechgeek.blogspot.com/2011/06/why-i-still-have-windows-phone-65-even_07.html. Feel free to check out some of the other articles I have on the site as well. If you want, you can follow me on twitter too (link to my profile is @rctechgeek).
Update (6-25-2012): After a long while, I have finally updated my article with part 3, which includes the Windows Phone 7.5 "Mango" update (with a look at what has changed and what hasn't). Here is the link to part 3: http://bit.ly/LLsS7k
Update (6-28-2012): Part 4 is now up, continuing from where part 3 left off, for your reading pleasure. The link to part 4 is: http://bit.ly/NRzQdh
Yes, and yes. Im satisfied when Mango comes, but im not unhappy now ether. I recently sold my HD2 as my goodbye to WM. Keept my BA and some other old WM devices out of nostalgia, but there in there boxes now.
ditched my winmo as soon as windows phone was released and I didn't look back
Love WP7 as an OS, miss WM for it's eye candy/customizable.
One thing I don't like about WP7 is the Metro UI. While it is clean & what ever, it's missing the eye candy & ability to customize that WM or Android has. I understand a lot of people like it, but keep in mind that is an opinion. Not a fact & in my opinion, it's kind of dull looking.
All that said, I'll never look back at WM or Android. I just love how smooth WP7 is & the games/apps.
Yes n Yes. What I am missing most is garmin GPS (I live in indonesia and garmin is the only good gps with mapping system and POI here) and ability to search contact just like pc outlook, which will be sorted next update I believe
When I migrated from WM6 to WP7, I kept my old phone charged and ready for the first few weeks, because I wasn't sure I would be able to get by without some of the features it offered. Truth be told, it's now been sitting (uncharged) in a drawer for the past 5 months, and it will soon be sold. WM has nothing on WP7 in my book.
If, for some reason, it became necessary for me to leave WP7, I still wouldn't go back to WM, I'd go with one of the other modern smartphone OSes.
Yes...and hell yes!
Since the first day I used wp7 on my old hd2 I loved it....but then Android pulled me back in cuz hd2 didn't run it perfectly. And Android since then became annoying to me. iPhone was my first smartphone, and I found my self loading my screen with colorful icons I never touched. Android is good.....BUT even with a bloody dualcore it will lag and can't touch any wp7 device in scrolling. Wp7 is only getting better, and I can't imagine how wp8 will be plus windows 8 tabs.....God bless Microsoft!
Edit: I forgeot WM lol....it was cool for the few weeks i used it.
I have been a WM user for years... and I was excited when WP7 came out. I bought the surround Nov. 18th and it has been my primary phone. I also have some android devices I use for development and if it wasn't for the Zune media player and Zune Pass, I would be using android every day. I sure hope that Mango brings everything we as a group have been waiting for... Like multitasking and video MMS and......
Otherwise I am going to get an android phone for my daily driver and wait until WP7 matures some more.
But man do I love the Zune player and pass!
Though I love WP7 there are things that tick me off. Mango will correct them of course I just wish that MS gets to it fast and we do not see the cluster bang that we saw with NoDo. the problem really is twofold. MS really needs to push this OS and educate people on it. in metro Boston there is nothing on WP7 yet tons of stuff we see for android and ios. Secondly go into say a T-MO store and ask to see a wp7 device and get told why would you want that? we have this nice new samsung android here blah blah... MS needs to really step it up and get adverts out there that shows the OS and what it can do..instead of showing a bunch of peeps falling down or dropping devices in urinals’
I just converted from Android and I will not look back I love wm phone better than the other os out there I just wish they had two apps my bank chase and navigon or Tom Tom come on get onto this os it is great .
Sent from my T8788 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
There are some things I can't do, or things I can't run on WP7 that I was able to run on 6.5... But WP7, pre-nodo and now with nodo was slick enough for me to make the full change and simply adapt to it... I found it that good...
Mango will simply make it much much better...
The apps I miss off ole 6.5 are TomTom and Garmin... But Turn-By-Turn is filling the gap for now...
I first tried WP7 on my HD2 and the HD2 came alive and ran quick like it always could... 6.5 hobbled it...
The simple things done on the phone each day, like checking messages and emails and such is much quicker on WP7... Zip in, do what ya gotta do, zip out... Its the OS for the serious user...
Users who want a lot of fart apps stick with haemorrhoid and igroan!
Hi everyone. I have another article up with some more reasons that I keep a Windows Mobile 6.5 device handy. Most of them have to do with bluetooth, but not all.
link: http://catholictechgeek.blogspot.com/2011/06/why-i-still-have-windows-phone-65-even_07.html
For those of us who like games, you have to admit that Microsoft would make things a lot better if they made it easier to get console emulators on Windows Phone 7, right (you can run emulators under Windows Mobile 6.5)?

I'm curious to know how many people actually used contact transfer via bluetooth in Windows Mobile 6.5. It seems to me that was a handy feature.

I didn't I just sent my contacts to my SIM card and copied them that way. How ever I will not be giving up my 6.5 HTC TP2. Not until MS installs a "windows" explorer allowing me to truly use my device as I see fit.
As for the apps I know people are working very hard on them and they are coming, no different than WinMo 5-6.5 when it first came out. In three years time I'm sure there will be tons of stuff we have created.
I had the touch pro, touch pro 2, and imagio so i was pretty seasoned in windows mobile. I just recently got the HTC Trophy and im satisfied with WP7. No more lag, a browser thats dependable and can play most videos while browsing and not worrying about the videos making the browser close in the background because of too much memory being used, being able to open text messages without lags and freezes and reply instantly, much better keyboard and music player
theres only a few things that somewhat piss me off tho, no file explorer, no custom ringtones (coming in mango), no usb mass storage mode, no wifi tethering at the moment, and on winmo i use to download albums single mp3's through the web browser and i was able to add those files to my library on the go without being tied down to using a computer and syncing.
but other than those gripes i love wp7 and realize its still within its first year and i dont expect it to have everything right off the bat but i love the os and willing to wait things out its going to be exciting watching this platform grow.
WP7 is ok, I like its simplicity, but I really miss the openness of WinMo.
I can't stand the absence of USB mass storage, I can't stand to be bound to Zune, I can't stand to be bound to my PC, I cannot stand the absence of file management with file explorer...
I cannot stand not to able to play quickly my DivX|AVI movie files, after a simple drag & drop.
I cannot stand the lack of decent storage (no swappable SD card, no slot for SD card, pathetic 8GB only devices...)
In September I will probably move to a high end Android device.
All my friends that used to have WinMo have now moved to Android and they all so satisfied
I realize I cannot stand locked down OS like iPhone and WP7
I thought Mango would bring some flexibility and openess... But it didn't
WM is nothing in front of WP.. if someone has both WM and WP and chooses to use WM instead of WP, he/she obviously has some kind of problem in his life..

Or maybe, more reasonably, he just needs a flexible and open OS, without missing features.
