Is there a way to manually update firmware for an unrooted firetv stick?
I know you can't access the cache folder, but is there a way to trigger it to install the update.bin from another folder?
Thanks!

If you can get root from that program you wont have any problems.

I want to root my 8.9.
I have prepared everything to root it with the KFFirst Aide method. Before I want to start, my Kindle have updatet to 8.4.1.
Do the KFFFirstAide method work on 8.4.1?
I`have all the necessary data already downloaded and adb and fastboot works with option 16.
Can I start the root process without probelms with this method?
I want to install playsore and perhaps later twrp recovery.

I can't answer the question regarding the KFFirst Aide rooting utility but I can tell you that using the Bin4ry tool on 8.4.1 does work. I'm now looking for a method to install TWRP 2.4.4 in conjunction with 8.4.1. If you have any ideas let us know.

I also was OTA upgraded to 8.4.3. However, I did not lose root or the Google Play Store download/install capability. Bin4ry ver. 30 worked for me to root 8.4.1 and as I've stated, I did not lose root after being upgraded to 8.4.3.
Could someone please post the link to the thread on the latest Binary root method for Kindle Fire HD 8.9. Thanks

hi!
link to Binary
I strongly recommend soupkit, a Linux-live-system based installer. After installing it on a usb stick and booting from the stick you have everythink perfectly set up. I rooted with Soupkit in < 30 min!
Soupkit
For those rooting for the first time, I just rooted my KF HD 8.9 with the Root Many method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
The Qemu root method did not work for me. I did make sure to install and test the ADB drivers first. I rooted both 8.4.3 and 8.4.1. I was OTA updated right after rooting 8.4.1 I intend to prevent any more OTA updates with Droidwall.
I tried doing the SoupKit method but I'm having trouble with the ADB. Rootplus couldn't detect any ADB in the folder even though it's there. As for the Binary method, I tried doing it for several hours yesterday but I can't get it to work. What should be the first steps before I use the Binary root program? Sorry, but I'm really such a noob at this. My Kindle btw is 8.9 version 8.4.3

the binaries provided by soupkit are for 32 Bit. Maybe you used a 64 Bit Linux installation? (Tried 64 Bit at first and it did not work, with 32 Bit it worked like a charm)
Finally got my Kindle rooted. I used the Soupkit method using Ubuntu 32 bit. Thanks everyone.

I'm trying to understand where you are at. Were you rooted or custom ROM? Then performed a factory reset from within the tablet? In order to use any file explorer on a Kindle Fire HD, you must be rooted or register your Kindle with Amazon and download it from the Amazon app store. You can use root many Android to root and install Google Play Store and go from there if you don't want to register with Amazon.

Oh, you broke your root. You have to un-root it back to factory and then you can use the factory reset from within the tablet itself. That's the problem. See if you can re-root the tablet with root many Android http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460 then use Kindle Fire first Aide to disable over the air updates from Kindle http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2096888 so your root does not break or you will have to re-root again when amazon updates the firmware.

You can update all you want but once rooted you don't want any updates to come through or your root will break.

Did you download SDK and set the files in the proper path? Post the path if you want to make sure.
I have a firetv1 and patiently waiting for rbox to release the latest rom.
His rom package for firetv2 has support for not having root (delete the su directory from the zip before install).
Does anyone have this setup on firetv2? If you do, do apps that check for root run properly?
I am especially interested in att uverse app and whether it works properly on all channels, (CNN, TNT, etc).
Thanks.
EDIT- now that we have prerooted fireOS 5 rom on firetv1, i have installed without the su directory and yes the uverse app works properly. thanks.

That's really interesting. I would think you could install xposed, then rootcloak? Seems complicated though

If you are rooted, you can install TWRP recovery and then rom v5.2.1.1. montoya-5.2.1.1-rooted_r1.zip. You will be rooted and on the most current version of firmware for the stick.
Thanks i take it that rom wont work on the box
I have the Fire TV 1 and had TWRP and Pre Rooted 5.2.4.1 FW installed. Yesterday during a restart the FTV started boot looping. I could see the option for TWRP recovery though.
I booted into TWRP recovery and reflashed the Pre Rooted 5..2.4.1. The FTV now booted but I have lost both TWRP and SuperSu as well. When I type su into an adb shell I got su not found?
Updated were blocked through the device as well.
Anyone else experience this? What can I do now to get TWRP installed and root established?
Help anyone?
Bump ^
Did you do any factory reset or something? I don't know how you could have lost SU and twrp when installing the prerooted roms. All apps say no root? i wonder if you did a factory reset if it would help or re-installed whatever version you were on when you rooted? I'm a novice so don't blame me for bricking! lol

Thats why I am stumped! I did not do any factory resets or wipes. I simply selected rbox's rooted 5.2.4.1 ROM, installed and rebooted. Now I dont see the initial boot screen when the fire tv restarts. Just the regular animation.
is your bootloader unlocked? I don't have any rooted FTV1's. I think you could reflash the recovery if your unlocked....

all i can think of is try to root with a USB A to A cable, i think that was possible. From appstarter do you see anything non-stock?

Since I had installed rBox's 5.2.4.1 rooted ROM when I had root, thats what I am on now except without root now. I had blocked updates on the device so thankfully that is still in place. And according to aftvnews, this version cannot be rooted.
I do have a bunch of non stock apps that I had installed that are still present on the device.

you ever try to sideload SuperSU? Or run a root app that requests access and seen if it just says access denied? Just throwing out ideas to try, I didn't see anyone else trying to help. If you flashed pre-rooted version then i would think some of the exploits are still in your system.

I downloaded the latest supersu and sideloaded it. When I run it there is simply a blank screen and back to where I was. Nothing happens.
Now in appstarter I can see two versions of su, one from before and the latest one. Running either does not do anything.
I had Adaway installed before as well. If I run it now, it just comes back with not a rooted device
Do you still have TWRP? You should be able to flash SuperSU that way.

No thats the kicker, I lost both TWRP and root.
It is a long shot, but you could try kingo root and king root, see if they can get root access. I know they dont work on a firetv stock for rooting, but something must have flashed wrong and maybe they can find a way into root.
Curious though, every time you have flashed the pre-rooted OS did you always disable the updates every time?

I believe the pre-rooted OS has that setting disabled in the first place.

AFTVnews always recommends disabling updates to be sure. It almost seems like you got updated. Try running Kingroot. Worst case it fails and you are still where you are at...
