Fire OS 5 - Amazon Fire Phone

Hi from Spain, I've just bought a Fire Phone and i have a question:
Does anyone know if it will get a Fire OS 5 update?.
Thanks in advanced.

Nobody does, Amazon claim yes but there's no timeline.

Ok, many thanks.

I am 99% convinced there will never be Fire OS 5 for Fire Phone.
Also no bootloader unlocker.
You probably have to live with that.

The FirePhone was dropped by Amazon and they fired about the half personell of their R&D dept.
So, no FOS 5 for the FP.

It is a pity, FP is a great smartphone.

If you haven't already, get Safestrap and replace FireOS with one of the custom ROMs (I'm a fan of Fire Nexus). So much better!

Hi, I saw a post at below address recently that the reply from Amazon seems positive.
tieba.baidu.com/p/4762152346
some captured message is as below.
......
We are just planning to launch the Fire OS 5 on the Fire phone devices.
We will send this as an alert; In order to notify to all the customers before the launch.
There is no need to be concerned. Once if the update launches. Your fire phone device will be automatically updated with the software update.

Pretty much ignored everything you asked for with the standard uninformative blurb. It's likely a template response they have for anyone asking about an update for the Fire Phone. They likely don't have anyone on staff anymore for the Fire Phone. Anyone that was still around likely got moved to other projects.

I asked them the same question few months ago and they answered the same. I think it is a standard answer for this question.
It is a pity that Amazon doesn't take care of its customers. We can only wait for Fire OS 5.
Many thanks for your answers.

I couldn't care less about Fire OS 5, but it would be nice if they would just give us the bootloader unlock since they have ceased supporting it. We can dream, right?

just unlock the bl and we will build FireOS5 ourselves

Hello, I've just write to Amazon and got this answer:
Hello Franz,
I apologize for the unsatisfactory experience and for the inconvenience caused you. That's definitely what we don't want our customers to experience.
To help you, in this case, I've forwarded your comments to our developer and higher authority to let them know that how our customers are experiencing trouble with Fire phone.
It is my humble request please extend your patience and understanding while we work on this. We'll get back to you with an update with a satisfactory resolution shortly.
Rest assured, we are here to take care of issues you encounter and we always endeavor to provide the best service to our valued customers and aim to ensure that the issue is resolved to the fullest satisfaction.

Hi,
First of all, I ask you please read this entire mail, and try to make it reach people who can do something about this issue.
I will like to know if you can give any news about a software update on Fire Phone. I can understand you discontinued the product but less than 2 years of support is something that I would never expected from Amazon. I make a buying decision counting on Amazon good sense of responsibility and customer satisfaction.
Me and a considerable number of users are claiming for a Fire 5.0 OS in order to be able keep using most of the newest apps. Also features like Google Play Services are required for apps that aren't in the App Store, and the newest versions stopped working on the Fire Phone. My WhatsApp isn't functional on Fire Phone anymore, and using it from Google Play doesn't let me know how many messages are pending for reading. So I feel like I am forced to use a bugged phone or buy a new one. This is really frustrating considering that Nexus 5, Moto X, The HTC One M8 (among others) are from 2014 as well and still being completely functional and working with Android 6.0.
Can you please give me a satisfactory answer? Or should I assume that Amazon tricked me selling me a phone with an early expiration date?
Thanks in advance for your time and help,
Best

I think the best we can do is write Amazon making clear that at this point, we are somewhat cheated by them. Too much people angry trash talking about Amazon isn't something that I think they really like.

Because it is not possible to unlock the bootloader. So everything custom is based on Kitkat.

Will we get the fire os 4 update?

Hi friends , I really like my fire phone but I am just wondering ; will we get the fire os 4 update? or software development has been stopped? Thank you.
Update; I had an answer from Amazon fire phone team , they are so kind but I think thats it , there will be no software updates our fire phones
''Hello,
I understand that you'd like to get Fire OS4 to your Fire phone.
I'd like to bring to you kind attention that, we've made no announcement about any future Fire phone software updates, so I can't answer your question. I'm extremely sorry for the disappointment caused.
We would never want to lose a valued customer like you and we always endeavor to assist our customer with the best of our service. It is certainly not our intention for our customers to have anything but a pleasant experience using Fire Phone.
However, this is something that we need to take serious consideration for change in Fire Phone.
To ensure the utmost attention, I've forwarded your message to our development team for consideration as we make further improvements.''
I'm happy with 3.6.8
Hope someone find a way to install other ROM :fingers-crossed:
Don't always believe the low-level customer services.
When the new Fire tablets were announced along with Fire OS 4, it was said (in a public statement) that the Fire phone would receive Fire OS 4 in early 2015...
I'm not holding my breathe, but it's still not the end of early 2015 and it can mean anything depending on their definition of "early". The way I see it, June is still classed as "early".

I know that announcement , finger crossed , but if they have a plan to upgrade for early 2015 , what is wrong with make an announcement to their customers ? I think the key sentence is '' However, this is something that we need to take serious consideration for change in Fire Phone.''
Yeah, I'm not holding my breathe. To be honest, I wish I hadn't sold my Lumia 735 for this phone. It's an okay phone, but needs an update plus the ability to be unlocked...
I just want root off of 3.6.8. That is the part that is killing me the most about this phone.

I called amazon directly and the representative, on the other line, said they are unsure of a specific date for os 4 being released. Did you read the news about developers, who are leaving fire phone due to limited users? developers are saying that the device is not in demand and developing apps is not cost efficient for them. here you go:
http://www.geekwire.com/2015/app-developers-bailing-on-fire-phone-creating-new-challenge-for-amazon/
I called about a week ago and got the same answer.
While they did announce that they'd be giving the fire phone os 4, it's been super quiet since then.
It's a shame, because I was really looking forward to using an android wear device with my fire phone

I just wish they would release an update fixing the SBC encoding so music over Bluetooth didn't sound like crap.
Hey I know wrote a negative post about a release, but I just got some exciting news from amazon.Ive been having reception issues and this is the response they gave me:
Hello Erdin,
I'm sorry for the delay in resolving your issue. I tried contacting you at the phone number listed in your Amazon account but haven't been able to reach you.
Our technical team was unable to correct the issue you described with losing reception on the Amazon Fire Phone. I'm very sorry for the inconvenience. We have, however, determined what the issues are and our technical team is diligently working to fix the issues. According to our developers, the issues should be resolved with the newest software update for the Fire operating system. Great news! update is a month away . I hope they added a few UI changes like lock screen notifications ( able to read, answer and dismiss from the lock screen ), add 3G on / off switch and can remove sms / dialed phone numbers etc. one by one from the carousel preview
Guess that means I'll be pushing back my root for another month
I didn't want to risk anything unduly, but hopefully this actual piece of information means good news for us
I contacted Amazon help last month about BT 4.0 LE and got this back: They probably didn't know the April release date back then.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello,
I'm sorry for the disappointment you had regarding the Bluetooth LE update for the Fire Phone device.
We'll release the updates frequently for the Fire Phone with performance improvements, application upgrades. I understand that you are waiting to receive an update for enabling Bluetooth 4.0 LE for the Fire Phone device.
Our technical team is already working on this update with additional improvements to Fire Phone device. While we do not have any information about the next software update release, but once all the improvements and bugs(if any on device) are fixed, the software update will rolled out for all the Fire Phone device.
When the update is released, it'll be delivered to all the Fire Phone devices connected to wireless or Wi-Fi network. You'll be notified with an alert when the update hits your Fire Phone.
When we release an update for the Fire Phone, it'll be listed on our help pages here :
https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201531560
We'll honor your commitment by continuing to provide the quality product availability and support you expect for Fire Phone.

Has anybody heard any news on the update?

Will Lollipop bring more development?

That title sounds like a prediction/speculation but honestly its just curiousity. If aftv gets lollipop is it likely to attract more developers?
I know its been said the in terms of development aftv was a letdown but think its still a very popular set top box. And if it wasnt for Geohot's root and rbox's just about everything else, this box wouldn't be modified at all.
But is the reason for that jellybean or Amazon's security or maybe a combination of both? Its just weird so many phones and tablets to choose from with all sorts of custom ROMs yet aftv was one of the only good choices for android based TV boxes yet very few developers were moved.
I'd call it a bit of a loaded question. If/when AFTV goes to Lollipop that will make it easier for Android devs to support or continue supporting AFTV along with other Android devices in general. So no, it's not going to attract more devs for AFTV only games/apps but yes more devs will make AFTV versions of their apps. Android 4 isn't THAT old and it's still fairly well supported, so I'd say it's more a case of moving to Lollipop before devs start abandoning it more than a case of attracting new devs. Of course this is just all my take, call it a guess or just speculation.
There is no way of knowing if more developers will work on the Fire TV if and when its upgraded. There is no way of even knowing how many developers have even tried to do things with the Fire TV. The one thing you are sure to see is a new influx of root talk once the Fire TV is upgraded to android 4.4, but if they are not able to accomplish root, that talk will die down quickly. I think some people are not realizing that the reason you do not see a lot of custom things for the Fire TV is because Amazon is winning the battle. Amazon has won the rooting battle, which turns a lot of people off to the Fire TV. In winning the rooting battle they have been able to keep the Fire TV the way they intended it to be. Sure you can run a launcher, but unless you are rooted, which most are not, then you are stuck with a black background on most lunchers, not to mention all the other things you cannot do unless you are rooted. There are a lot of people that think if they are not able to have root than the device is not worth it. I think that is part of why the Fire TV has not seen a lot of custom mods. To see what I mean just read the AT&T Galaxy Note 4 forums and you will see how many people talked about returning it just because it could not be rooted. They acted like the Galaxy note 4 was not worth a cent just because they could not root it. Amazon really has the Fire TV locked down right now and some people find it boring. This is what happens when smart company like Amazon stays on top of their product and takes measures to stop people from hacking it. The only other mainstream set top device that was never hacked or had very liitle customizations is the Apple TV 3, but the difference is that Apple has followers that will buy their products regardless, while I think if Amazon came out with a Fire TV 2 they would have people waiting to see if it was rootable before they buy it. Nobody wants to believe it, but Amazn has won thus far against devs hacking their device. A clear cut win for Amazon.
I'd say 95% of FireTV owners don't even care about root.
It's open enough as it is for most. We are a niche.
I figured itd be a tough thing to predict. However, to me this is a weird device in the android world. For awhile it was the only good choice in set top boxes (performance&price) and i dont think it was amazon's secure nature that impeded development. Root was achieved just a couple of months after its release and amazon didnt break root right away. I dont know the exact numbers but id say theres quite a few rooted aftvs in circulation. Phones are obviously more popular but you have soo many choices there. My gut says things will more or less remain static for aftv development but the why puzzles me a little. Guess it matters less and less. I hate amazon's insistence on control but cant complain about what theyve done recently. Overall, im happy with it and if that changes we now have good alternatives like nvidia shield.

[NEWS] Bootloader Unlock and Fire Phone Developer Version

As we know, Amazon never released an official way to unlock the bootloader on their devices.
I'm pretty sure a lot of their customers have requested the same thing over and over, but what i'm not sure of is if anyone got a response from their "customer help" like mine.
The other day, I sent my 2nd request regarding the bootloader unlock, kernel sources and "system_core" patches they'd released for Kindle Fire HD and HDX, the answer was being already a lot more interactive then my first response(props to that).
They replied saying that "Kernel source codes weren't available at this time", and that they had forwarded my suggestion to its developer team, but i noticed the employee forgot to mention the bootloader unlock part, which for me was of utter importance.
So again i contacted them, via the reply option we get when we send feedback, in order to continue the last question and asked about the bootloader unlock.
This is the full reply i got from them today:
Hello _____,
My name is Vijay, I'm with Fire Phone support.
I'm sorry that my colleague missed out on mentioning about bootloader unlock code for Fire Phone.
I have checked in our database and see that we haven't released bootloader unlock code for Fire Phones because our technical team is still working on developer version. We regret for any inconvenience this may have caused to you.
We realize how important bootloaders unlock code is to our developers. I'd like to inform you that we are also looking for developers who can help us to make our Fire Phone top notch.
Considering your comments, I have forwarded your request to Fire Phone development team for review.
Although, at this time, we do not have any information regarding unlock code, please be assured, we will definitely consider your customer comments as we work on improvements in Fire Phone space.
When we're ready to announce developer version, we'll definitely provide bootloader unlock code on our website. I'd like to thank you for bringing the need for this to our attention.
Thanks again for taking the time and sending us your valuable feedback.
We hope to see you again!!

It was explicitly said that their technical team is working on a developer version of the phone and that they will, and i quote, DEFINITELY, provide bootloader unlock code on their website.

We can all appreciate each others thoughts but don't necessarily have to agree. :highfive: I think Amazon is a very good company but they did drop the ball with their FirePhone, OS, and closed it to developers. Hopefully they will cooperate and give them the tools they need to help us reap the benefits of their abilities!!! I know I sure can't but I appreciate the efforts of those who can
Thats great, and confusing...amazon seems to have a split personality when it comes to locking down some devices then apparently handing over the keys to others.
A phone is different than set top boxes and tablets I guess but I thought the idea of them taking a loss on the hardware was to lock people in the ecosystem and making money by selling books, games, apps, movies, any product imaginable with the amazon shopping app (which I hear is going to be incorporated into fire tv and stick.)
Not complaining at all obviously. Just wish I wouldve bought at least one more! Thanks for the good news.

They have stopped selling the Fire Phone which basically means they are discontinuing all support for the device and calling their loses. It makes sense to hand over the keys to the community so those with the phone are totally SOL.
The real shame is that the hardware is actually solid, but fire OS is a nightmare and shipping a device without the Google Play Store was just stupid since many apps are not in the Amazon store.

they can clear out there inventory faster if they unlock the bootloader.

They don't have any inventory left. They dumped it all to a third party seller on ebay now.

How does this make sense at all? The phone is discontinued, they gain nothing from unlocking the bootloader.

1) they gain some goodwill on Fire devices (Fire TV, Fire tablets), whereas the Fire phone tarnished the brand name. Unlocking the bootloader, letting development happen salvages some of that.
2) by allowing unlocking bootloader, those are warranty claims they don't have to worry about. Even if they aren't selling them anymore, they still have to honor warranty claims on the new devices that are sold by 3rd parties -- unless the buyer voluntarily voids the warranty by unlocking the bootloader.
This is my first visit to this forum. I just ordered a Fire Phone for $125 from who I believe to be a liquidator who received a quantity of stock to clear. The phone comes with an unlock code!

Well how sneaky is that! I will gladly void my warranty for an unlocked bootloader So I agree with you there.:good:
Yes. Probably the guy that sold over 11,000 of them already. Its an amazing deal if youre planning on being a prime member regardless.
I dunno though about amazon making amends to the people who overpaid for this phone last summer. In my opinion, anyone that shelled out $650 for fire phone was not planning on doing any modifications to it. They were sold on the camera, firefly, prime etc. STILL, regardless of the reasoning, its great news about the bootloader being unlockable.
Kernel source/GPL
"Kernel source codes weren't available at this time"
Umm, wat? GPL? Isnt' this it here? Or are we talking about a different phone?

They have stopped selling the Fire Phone which basically means they are discontinuing all support for the device and calling their loses. It makes sense to hand over the keys to the community so those with the phone are totally SOL.
The real shame is that the hardware is actually solid, but fire OS is a nightmare and shipping a device without the Google Play Store was just stupid since many apps are not in the Amazon store.

Well i can understand why they did that... It wasn't from what i have heard a great device

Wishful thinking at its finest. Amazon doesn't care about "goodwill" when it comes to a dead device. They dumped stock and are trying to put the whole thing behind them. Why would they release something else to get a failed project's name back in the news? Specially when it is of 0 monetary value to them?

The question wasn't are they doing it. The question was why they sure doing it. And I answered the question. You are merely asking it again. Read my reply, again.
If you doubt this is happening, reply to the op, not to me. Because you're asking a question ("why") I've already answered quite well.

I've reread this comment about 10 times I still have no idea what you are saying.
"The question was why they sure doing it." What???

BOUNTY/PLEDGE to unlock Fire Phone bootloader

Update:
I did notice some users pledging, but didn't realized we actually got something going on, I'll be updating with an estimated pledge sum, I'm not naming individuals but at least summarizing this, the ball is rolling and hopefully the purpose of this (which is attract developers in a good, respectful and rewarding way) will pay off!
Dear Fire Phone owners:
We are looking very disorganized and scattered on efforts, we also have GOOD but limited dev support due to the quantity of Fire Phone owners and so the quantity of them that actually visit XDA is even lower.
So let's join efforts, I see @madushan1000 doing effort to unlock the bootloader and willing to blow his own qfuses for it, on his hard earned money.
If you know a developer, or are a developer, we must seek answer for the following answers:
1.- How many phones do you need to play around until you blow up the right qfuse?
(If the answer is n <= 10, I don't see why we can't all join a bounty *paid upfront* for that developer to buy the damn 10 phones ~$1350 dlls, if he gets it done on the first attempt, he deserves the remaining hard earned money solely for rewarding, and even more.)
2.- Is there any exploitable bug on the qcom trustzone that can at least trick into thinking the phone is unlocked? What would be needed to do so?
(If all that's required is a time and effort to do it, I don't see why we can pledge on a *serious* bounty and paid the developer $1000 dlls when done, if he is a reputed developer and has evidence or prior work, I don't even see why we can't paid upfront either.)
3.- Are you interested in a bounty for fixing the camera code on the existing CM11 rom? What would be the required incentive for it? (can you do it @ggow, @madushan1000?)
We should be able to brainstorm and just think in joining efforts, even if my questions or ideas are the wrong ones, hell! then just tell everyone out loud which idea or process is the right one! Let's work together people!
I just saw 13,000 fire phones sold in Ebay, what the hell?, 1000 fire phone owners that visit XDA can't pledge $1000 dlls?
If this is seriously not doable I will just delete the post right away, but let's at least seek some developers and show them we can organize a good offer, we might find some interesting results.
I will pitch in for an unlock. Not sure of amount until it happens.
The Fire Phones on ebay are still going for over a 100 each. With the new tablets announced today and as people forget the fire phone, the price should drop VERY soon... I hope. I would love to pick up a spare.
Got mine on eBay on $57.50, i hope devs can unlock the bootloader fix the camera and the NFC
Wow, I'm glad to see something like this going on. But I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to do any serious work until next month or so. My final exams coming up. And next I have to find a job.
Anyway, I'm working on a kexec module my spare time, Provided that it works, We can start developing a boodloader unlock. People with already bricked phones might be able to help too by trying to unbrick their phones following something like this http://www.androidbrick.com/ultimate-qualcomm-snapdragon-unbrick-guide-snapdragons-are-unbrickable/ . If someone finds a working method it would help very much for the development.
As per hal issues I proposed to have tow sets of libraries on the rom to bypass the amazon liblog.so issues. May be @ggow is working on it? I don't have to proper knowledge about android build system to do it, or the resources.

- Bypassing the liblog issues unfortunately is only one part of the problem - that in itself is tricky to do. A mega amount of changes required to the android stack.
- The camera issues require the HAL source code from Amazon or they need to be written from scratch.
- I am currently looking into what can be done about the camera. I have started looking at the binaries to see if they can be patched.
- I have also been studying the bootloaders, @madushan1000 I'll message you separately when I have a spare moment.
Thanks, I'll try to help you with the hal stuff in the future.
We should see a flood of people joining this forum due the eBay sales. 120 plus a year of prime was what made me buy. I'd pitch in a bit if it were unlocked. After tax and shipping, the phone has only cost me $31. Better than a Windows phone as a spare I would surmise even without seeing my package delivered yet.. Should be here any minute from USPS.
And I'm still driving this to get more people to say I'm up with $XX for the bounty, seriously no one was replied with a quantity WTF?
If anyone is reading this and still doesn't understand, a "bounty" is to get your offering of money for our developers @madushan1000 and @ggow for helping us get our Fire Phones with an unlocked bootloader or with a decent camera on CM11
Example: I'm in with $30 for the bounty
count me on $20 for bootloader unlock
Thread cleaned.
Please discuss other subject matter elsewhere and keep on topic here.
Also, keep it respectful.
Thanks,

I needed prime and a phone and made an impulse decision I immediately regretted after I learned there is a locked bootloader. Put me in for 20.
Also, I have a small coffee roasting shop and if either of you devs are coffee drinkers send me a pm me and I'll ship you some good stuff. That's not a bounty, it is an effort to increase productivity.
I'm in for $20 if somebody can handle this. I'd like to have a solid phone to hack on that's not my main.
I pledge 20.00 US dollars to this.
Sent from my Fire Phone using XDA Free mobile app
I'll pledge 100 for an unlock bootloader.
I will throw in $20
I through in 30$ i am looking forward to it ?
I will throw in a new phone with prime and $100.
i will throw in $20 and been waiting for it
I would give another $20. It looks like Amazon has no plans for it. I emailed them a few days ago:
" Hi,
I understand that you want us to provide the steps to Unlock the bootloader for your Fire Phone device.
I'd like to bring to your kind attention that unlocking your phone’s bootloader will cause you to lose all the data from your phone and voids your phone's warranty. That is the reason why currently we don't have plans of releasing a bootloader unlock for the fire phone.
However, I've forwarded your message to our development team for consideration as we make further improvements. Customer feedback like yours is very important in helping us improve the Fire phone experience."

I'm looking to pay cash $$$ for live help with Amazon Fire TV.

Who wants to get paid for their time? Tomorrow, April 27th 2021.
I need one hour, two at the MOST,
Just to help me out and answer questions that I may have while I jailbreak my firestick and fire cube for the first time.
This is a serious offer. I know enough to get it done but I'm still a noob. I don't have the time it would take for me to research every question/issue that I encounter.

Jailbreak? Jailbreak is a term that is used for apple. People call sideloading apps on the firestick jailbreaking, if that is what you want. I am not into collecting money for helping. This is really easy, goto settings turn on ADB debugging and unknown apps in develoment options. Goto about in setting find your IP address, then use this app to connect and install apps....
ADB link
Jocala Software
jocala.com
I am assuming this is all you want to do is install 3rd part apps. Buying a jailbroken firestick is a scam....

Just seen this post there lol
I think offering cash for something that is done by the developers for the illusion and buzz (not to mention the education) is rather counterproductive to development. It's really okay to help/donate to these guys who work hard and help them with materials and test devices etcetera.
However, that being said to offer up ££$$$ for the sake of getting it done quicker.
I don't want to offend you as I recently done to another member.
But use the search function and by all means learn from what you read ( the way we all had to do it) whilst this is a bit late for your deadline.
It's more satisfying doing it by yourself instead of lining the pockets of these scammers you see out there. As @Michajin said it is really easy to do but jailbreaking refers to apple/ios not android.
Anyone else reading this for future reference needing help in a hurry and feels its taking too long for a response. Pm me and we'll set up a chat or whatever and I'll guide you free of charge.
