Hey guys, recently my phone updated to Android Nougat 7.0. This was a Google update, no root, no custom roms, nothing. Straight out of the box Nexus 5X. Everything worked fine, until the phone froze.
First, a little backstory. I was watching a Snapchat story and one of the Facebook Messenger chat heads was in the way, so I swiped the chat head away so I could watch the story. The phone froze, so I just figured that Snapchat and Facebook Messenger weren't going to play nice together. I held down the power button until the device turned off, then I tried to restart it. I got as far as the "Google Splash" screen for about 15 seconds or so and then the phone went to black. I've tried fastbooting into recovery mode, and the phone went black every time. I put it on my charger and it showed the image of a battery with a lightning bolt and then cut to black. Pushing the power button had no effect. The phone would no longer even attempt to boot. Occasionally, I can get the phone to fastboot, or try turning on, but then it just dies again. I'm assuming the is a soft brick?
Now for the good part. I called Google and am getting a warranty replacement, but due to poor judgement/paranoia, I haven't backed up any of my pictures to the cloud. I've tried connecting the phone to my computer, but my computer still can't read the device. I keep getting a "device descriptor request failed" error in my computer's device manager. Is there any way to get my pictures and other files off of this phone? I'd like to avoid flashing anything to the phone, because Google is holding a charge on my account for the replacement. If it fails warranty inspection or whatever it is they do, I'd rather not be out $500.
Thanks for any help!
Can you get into fast boot long enough to flash all partitions other then user data?
If you have not tried I would download latest factory image from google.
Edit flashall script by removing -w in there. This will skip the data partition and load all others.
It's worth a shot.
Side note: I personally love cloud backups. I can just log into any other phone now and all my data is back within in your. Photos, apps etc. It is pretty awesome not to have to worry.
If you are not comfortable with this method then you need to do manual backups often.
Update: If your bootloader is locked you are likely screwed from getting anything back. Very first thing I did to my phone was unlock bootloader even if you are not going to root. This does not void your warranty on a Nexus.

Adb pull those files. I know it'll take a while because of subdirectories, but it seems to be the easiest option if your computer recognizes the phone.

I haven't touched anything on the phone as far as software is concerned, I guess I should consider this a lesson learned then? The phone doesn't stay on for very long in fastboot. However, today I've been getting the red "low battery" LED notification. I'll charge it up and see what I can do, maybe that'll buy me enough time.
Admittedly, I don't know very much about flashing phones, rooting, unlocking, etc. I've loaded/installed a custom ROM onto my old Nexus 5 and reverted it back to standard Android, but that's about all I've done.

My computer does not recognize the phone. I keep getting a "device descriptor request failed" error. I don't mind how long it will take, I have a lot of vacation pictures and pictures of my new home on there that I'd rather not lose.
If you can't keep it on long enough then it's likely just a lesson learned. Maybe it's some kind of hardware failure. Try the charge. There is an LG recovery option still but that would wipe your data anyway so it's probably pointless.
I would really recommend just unlocking your bootloader with next phone. So you have some options if something like this happens. This wipes your data so best to do as first thing.
Cloud backup is also recommended. You can use other services if you don't want to trust google. Even apps like Mega can do auto backup of Camera folder. Im sure dropbox and others can do the same. I prefer Google Photos.

Ill have to toy with it and see what I can come up with. Maybe write Google a little note when I return it and see if they can do anything for me. I think it's something software related. It seems like others are having the same issues I'm having. The phone fails before fully booting up.
The phone's seen its fair share of dust, but I've kept pretty good care of it. Always in a decent case, screen protector, etc.
I'll be unlocking my bootloader as soon as I get my warranty replacement. As well as syncing what I can find on my computer. I'd rather not do this again.

I have a co-worker with Droid incredible and every time she turns the device on, it is stuck at the white HTC screen. Once in awhile, she'll be able to see the lock screen, but then the device will reboot again. I tried going into the recovery by pressing vol. down + power, but when I choose recovery, it gets stuck at the white screen again.
She does not have an insurance on the phone, is there a possible fix to this problem?
Thank you in advance.
Is it rooted or what? What did she or you do before this happened? Try to flash a rom or diff kernel?

Download this file
http://www.fourty.net/~berzerker/stockstuff/PB31IMG_3.26.605.1_RUU.zip
Rename that file PB31IMG.zip, put that on the root of the SD card, boot the phone into bootloader mode by pressing vol - & power. Let the update run its course, and she will go back to a TOTAL stock 2.2.
EDIT: She will lose all her texts, have to re-download all her apps, and set her homescreens up again, but I don't think you have any other option if it keeps getting stuck at the white HTC screen.
If it's stock already or if rooted and the PB31IMG from the above post doesn't work, she simply needs to do a warranty exchange. We are, after all, still within the warranty period.

How would that not work? Its the stock rom, signed. I myself have done this before. Why go exchange it and get a crappy refurb (most likely SLCD )that, more likely than not, has problems? Why not fix the problem and keep the one that she has?
If they didn't want to do that they could go to shipped-roms.com and download the RUU from there and flash it back to stock that way also.

It ain't gonna work if it's a hardware failure, which seems a bit too common with the first run of Incredibles. No software is going to fix a problem with the SoC, which is why I said if the RUU doesn't work, she needs to do a warranty exchange.
The phone is completely stock.
She had to cut the line off and use company phone for about a month or two due to her personal problems. Now she's trying to get back on line with Verizon, but it's keep on rebooting itself so there's noway put it back on again..
Does Verizon/HTC do warranty on the phone even though she's not on the Verizon with the Incredible?

I doubt they do, but you could just put it back on the plan, and take it into a verizon 30mins later. Tell them you hit *228 & #2 to update the prl and your phone rebooted and keeps doing so.
Thanks. If everything fails, I'll just go ahead and do that..
There's another version of recovery that lets you wipe the phone - you can search if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure that instead of pwr<->vol down it was pwr<->touchball. There, you'll be able to wipe the phone.
I had a similar problem with a phone that I just sent back for warranty repairs. The upside was I did get past the white splash screen. The downside was a few days later, the phone finally kicked the bucket and wouldn't power at all.
This fixed my issue. I was able to retreive my pictures after everyone else was saying to forget about it including HTC and Verizon.. I think this is a pearl as so many Incredible users have posted the constant reboot issue. Thank you Thank you Thank you!!
Another rebooting SLCD Incredible
Hi guys,
Just wanted to let you all know that this week, my wife's SLCD Droid Incredible started randomly rebooting. I had her on the Virtuous stock-based ROM and the SLCD ClockworkMod Recovery, and she had a TON of crap apps (pregnancy, game, live wallpaper, etc.)
I was able to back up the phone if I left the back cover off, but everything I did was time/heat sensitive. I wiped the phone and when setting it backup, got the bootloops after downloading only five or six market apps, not running any of them.
Last night I went back to stock (S-ON, Stock November PB31IMG.zip bootloader update). Again, after getting back to complete stock, it locked up after a few market apps were downloaded.
I called Verizon this morning from MY AMOLED Incredible, and they first had me describe the issues in detail (30 minutes), then try and repeat the issue (20 seconds after opening Google maps and starting a navigation session *quick heat*). She transfered me to "Level 2 Support", then he wanted to walk me through resetting to factory defaults on the phone via the SD card and storage settings. I noticed he wanted me to wipe the Internal storage, so I told him I needed to first backup the DCIM folder full of personal pics and videos to my SD card. He waited patiently while I backed them up (20 minutes). When finished, he had me wipe the phone+EMMC. I left the cover off so we could get through the initial setup, the put it back on after setting it up. He had me do *228 option 1, after the phone rebooted he wanted me to try and do "normal tasks" like downloading apps to get the phone to repeat the issue, if possible. I simply opened up Google Maps, started navigation and 1 second later, the phone went into bootloops. He promptly set up an "in-warranty" replacement to be overnighted to my house.
I do not have any monthly insurance on my phones, so I thought it was great deal that Verizon can issue an advance warranty replacement with return shipping, overnight, no less. Most companies would tell a customer to contact HTC directly. I am sure that is what Alltel used to do. I don't think VZW did it because we have corporate discount, I think this is standard service they provide for all their customers.
For any of you having this issue, here's what I recommend:
**If your phone is continually rebooting, pull your battery and let it sit out of the phone so they can cool for at least 20 minutes... Alternatively, you could probably put your battery in the freezer for 10-20 minutes and get a little extra "cold time" out of the phone before it bootloops**
1. Sync your apps with an app service like Appbrain to easily retrieve the list of apps you had.
2. Backup your call history and bookmarks using an app or two from the market. I have used free ones before, they should be easy to find.
3. Back up your Internal Storage and SD card to your computer (and preferably to a backed up location on your PC)
4. Revert to S-ON, and Stock ROM, if you are not already on one.
5. Set up only the basic functions on your phone (don't download any apps), then test that it is a heat issue by simply opening up Google maps and navigating anywhere.
6. Call Verizon and wait PATIENTLY on the phone as they walk you through their hoops. Expect this to take an hour or three. Just do as they say, as they have to make sure you indeed have a defective phone.
7. Profit.
Hope it helps,
jakewill

Ditto I have always had a pleasant outcome talking to the phone reps. Remember they are just doing their job and they are probably doing this exact same long process all day..
Wish I could say the store reps we're just as good but it's pretty hit and miss.

Hi,
I'm genuinely sorry if this is an often repeated thread, but I couldn't find anyone here suffering from exactly the same symptons as me.
I've had my One X for a couple of months, it's completely unrooted and has nothing on it you can't get from Google's app market. I'm with Orange, in the UK, so the phone's running all their default stuff.
My phone's been running quite hot ever since I got it, but, today, I had it in my pocket while I drove to work (20) minutes, and it must have overheated and turned itself off.
I couldn't turn it on, and, in my panic, I held the power button for ten seconds, and saw the buttons at the bottom flash. Since then, nothing at all, no charging light (from USB or mains). I've tried all combinations of power/volume button presses and absolutely nothing has happened at all. Nothing at all since the first button flashes on the first long power button press (10 seconds). Now, it's been like that for about 8 hours and has been on and off charge all day, to no avail. (no LED at all, at any point, red nor green).
I've just got back from holiday and have a tonne of pictures and vids I have probably lost, but want to try to recover. I'd be really, really grateful for the assistance of the experienced people here. I'm, as you may have picked up, a hopeless newb.
When I connect via laptop to USB, the computer (Windows 7) detects an APX device, whatever that is, but the automated driver installation fails. Nothing shows up in Windows explorer.
Is there anything I/You/We can do?
My last resort is to send it back to Orange, and ask if they can retrieve data, but I expect they'll just send a new phone and wipe/refurbish my old one for someone else.
Is it possible to send phones back to HTC for repair, without losing data?
And finally, although I've not seen anything on the screen at all, no bootloaders, no recovery screen, nothing, might some combinatin of my button-mashing have already wiped the phone?
On a scale of One to OH DEAR...how screwed am I?
Please help me, XDA!
Edit: Ah, I can see it as a device, actually. Shows up as an "APX Device", but I can't do anything with it.
Did you press power + volume up?
If so, it's in "bricked state" now and only HTC can recover it.

Yeah, I think once I tried everything else I tried that.
Is this what NVFlash can get around on other phones, but not the One X?
Assuming that's what I have done, will HTC be able to recover my personal data? I don't care about app-data, just photos and vids.
Should I go through HTC directly, or through my mobile network/carrier? The phone should still be in warranty, it's only a couple of months old.
Edit: Although, one thing to add to that is that at no point, apart from the very first 10-second power button press, did anything happen on the phone at all. If that makes any difference, at all.
I had a chat to an HTC customer services bod, who said that even if they can recover data during a phone repair they automatically wipe it, due to the Data Protection Act (UK).
Anyone happen to know if you can waive your right to data portection in certain instances?

trust me, backup and restore, even if you waived your rights and htc confirmed they wouldn't wipe it, i guarantee you 100% you would still get a phone back that has been wiped.

I know you're probably spot on there. It's potentially more trouble to HTC than it's worth, to go messing with personal data.
But, my phone's all but dead. I can't backup and restore.
Unless I can figure out how to make sense of this "APX" device detection thing.
Can I still somehow root my phone, if the only "access" I ahve to it is seeing it as an APX device? I can't do anything with it. I can't get into the bootloader to unlock it to allow rooting.
Or can I?
would a battery pull prompt the phone to start normally again possibly? The phone isn't hard to open, but htc will probably know if it has been since you might make a mess of some of the glue and shields in there.
Edit: Did you ever enter your dropbox details into your OneX? because it should have auto camera upload on by default. Check your camera upload folder of your dropbox on the web if so.
This may be useful for the s off development. It seems overheat protection may trigger apx

If I get desperate enough I might try pulling it open....
I never setup Dropbox, unfortunately. Nice idea though, and I sure as hell will next time.
If my phone's death can further the cause of open One X's for all, then I'm all for it. At this point, I'd pay someone to try and get my data off, too.
If someone wants to talk me through trying to access it in this "apparent" APX mode, I'm up for experimenting.
unfortunately I am also in the same situation,
my HTC OneX has a MIUI ROM, and today while I was playing it is locked, I pressed for 5 seconds the power button and the phone will go off at the time of restart anything! black screen and each function has ceased to work!
the strange thing is that for some time the FlashBoot worked, now no longer even that!
someone has found a solution to at least access to the memory to retrieve the data?
please help me

Put your phone on wall charger for 5-7 hours and then press power button + volume down button until the Bootloader shows up...
However, if you can't access the Bootloader even now... Your screwed. ..
I had the same situation.mine was flashed in a wrong firmware then it stuck in a bootloop.but when i tried to charge it for two hours in order to flash RUU, the device went extremely hot, it's late when I noticed it.After removing the usb charger, from then on my device doesnt power on.no sign of life after all.
Hi!
First of all i got AOKP + Franco kernel for 2w without any problem and I didn't change any option since last week.
This morning i rebooted it, it switched off and it didn't start again.
I cannot switch one my nexus again since then. I have always a black screen, also if I try to enter in download mode or in the recovery.
I tried to connect to my computer and smt times my laptop see a omap4400 (i'm not sure about the name) but after few second it disappears.
Tomorrow I'm going to the service center... But I have a big doubt:
What the hell happened this morning?
Thanks
Remove the battery for 5 minutes and try again.
If that doesn't work,
Follow this guide:
1. Download the zip file from http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f634...eeeee-1465412/, created by Legija
2. Extract zip to whatever location you're comfortable with (I used Android directory)
3. Open up Device Manager (Hold down Windows Key, press R, the type in devmgmt.msc and press OK)
4. Go to actions menu, select Add Legacy Hardware
5. Choose install manually, then have disk. Browse to where you extracted the zip, select the 'inf' file in usb_drv_windows
6. Choose OMAP, you'll get a popup if on Win 7, continue anyway (driver not signed)
7. Once completed with driver, pull battery out of phone, then plug it into USB
8. Double click omap4460_tuna_hs_pro.bat to start the process
9. Once completed, unplug from USB, put battery back in, and power-up!
10. Extra step - depending on what's been done, it may 'brick' again - suggest to do a restore or a wipe reinstall afterwards to be certain (mine bricked again next reboot)

I'm having the exact same problem. I saw my phone at maybe 10% battery in the AM, said screw it and let it die, woke up this morning and plugged the phone in and nothing. No LED light, black screen, completely unresponsive. I've tried every trick in the book, and the only one that seemed to work marginally even was using a different battery, which got my phone to boot to the encryption screen, but then shut off again. It did that twice, and now both batteries are useless.
I used Legija's program to try and bring some life back to my gnex, even though it's not the international version, just in hopes of getting some of my data back (I have already started the replacement process with Verizon since the phone was insured), but I got no luck there either.
It's extremely disappointing and annoying to me that this phone survived all sorts of ROM installations (I was also using AOKP on 4.1 if someone wants to start making connections), reformatting, tweaking, almost every setting on that phone was modified by me.
Not only that but almost any software or hardware problem I did run into I could solve in maybe an hour, but I let my charge run out and the phone just up and bricks itself? Now, that's just bull****... I would be very curious as to an explanation as to WHY on earth this would happen. Very confusing.
Not to hijack the thread, but my interest here is not restoring the phone to working condition but just seeing if I can pull my data off of it. I wouldn't even be posting here had I been able to have an SD card with my gnex, which I figured was unnecessary at the time I bought it since I knew the space on their was enough for me already, and the added branding of "Nexus" brand which had me under the impression it was maybe stable enough by itself. Not a mistake I'll make again..
Is it at all possible to get the data off of my phone at this point? At least partially? I believe encryption makes it impossible but I'm rather stubborn. Any help would be greatly appreciated..

So just to be clear... You've been able to get it to boot all the way up to the encryption screen, right? If so you should be able to get into fastboot (Holding down BOTH volume rockers and the power key.) From there you could relock/unlock the bootloader to do a full factory wipe which might solve your boot issue.
As far as the data loss from the wipe, you could then try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1994705

I was able to get it to the encryption screen with my old battery that had a little bit of charge left in it twice, but it shut itself down on me both times. So now both batteries are useless.. I took it to the Verizon store hoping they would maybe try one of their batteries, but they just called customer service and told me they're just going to replace it at this point.
I have a feeling the charging mechanism is somehow damaged, because when I did get it to the encryption screen I had it plugged into a wall outlet and it wasn't charging at all. So, I can't turn the phone on whatsoever anymore.. if I could turn it on I could solve this problem... but it simply refuses to boot. The closest I came to interfacing with it was the OMAP Flash script, which did work, but didn't fix the problem.
So maybe if I could get the phone working enough to use ADB with it I could get my data back, but not even that seems possible..

If the phone isn't charging then there's something wrong with the USB port. One way to test that would be to use a battery charger. Also, try a different cable. I've had issues with a few different cables that for whatever reason started to not fit properly in the phone.
If you're USB port has gone bad then you'll need to either A) Always use an external battery charger. B) Get a replacement. C) Fix it yourself (Good guide here: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repairi...+LTE)+Micro+USB+Charge+Port+&+Main+Mic/9641/1 )
So, I had my S3 in the cargo pocket of my pants, knelt down and must have tweaked the device just enough to crack the glass. It's a tiny crack that goes from the lower left side, to the southeast, for about 3'4", then south, for the last 1'4". Now, however, the screen is completely dark, and doesn't respond to touch.
The phone does work; however, with a catch. I can boot it up, see the hardware keys light up, and hear the first vibration for my notification of whatever it is, but within a few minutes of a cold boot, the device heats up very quickly and it never did that before. I have the last stable SlimBean on it, overclocked to 1726 or whatever the number is, but undervolted by -50mV I believe...and it's never been this hot, except when messing around with massive overclocks like a year ago.
I am curious if there's a way to harvest my texts, contacts, pictures, etc. Not all of these are stored on my SD. I know some are on the internal storage due to my not realizing it after flashing so many ROMs, and such. I just want my stuff back. I don't have a Samsung account and I don't know if ADB is enabled or not. I also oon't know anyone else with an S3, and even if I did, I don't know that they'd agree to let me try to plug their screen into my device.
I have a Note 3 on the way, so being without a phone isn't a huge issue. Any suggestions?
Odin a non-touch recovery and make a nand to external sd. You can restore text from a nand using Nandroid Manager.
Edit: didn't see the dark screen part. But if your are using Slim you can try the adb. In some AOSP adb is on by default.

If it helps, I'm using SlimBean on 4.3.1 I believe it was. The download I need is directly from Google, err, Android, for the developer tools or whatever it's called, yes? I probably also need the Samsung phone drivers, if I recall? Sorry, I just installed Win 8.1 so I lost all the software I had prior and haven't gotten around to figuring out what I need yet.
All right, so I was able to pull files from internal storage and my SD by plugging the device in after powered on. I managed to grab the contacts, telephony, and mmssms DB and DB-journal files using ADB. Luckily USB debugging was enabled, allowing ADB to work.
Hopefully those DBs will allow me to extract the info I need to restore everything. I know I can't just drop them onto my soon-to-arrive Note 3 (ETA a few hours) and expect them to work. I wonder if the SMS Contacts backup app I used would be able to pull the data and then I can import it. We'll see!
Anyway, now I'm going to try and flash full stock MD4. I know awhile back I flashed a MD4 full stock unrooted with Odin and had the added benefit of resetting the flash counter during the process. Can this be done on a phone with no display/touch? All the threads I've seen say to use CF's TriangleAway app, but I didn't have to use the Google Play app before, if I recall.
I then plan to sell the phone to anyone who wants to buy it. It's still in great shape and the battery holds enough charge to last me about two days of little to moderate use with airplane mode enabled overnight. 32 GB SD not included. PM me if interested. Until then, I'm going to try to sell it locally first, then on eBay.
S3 still available if anyone's interested. PM for info.

I've got a Nexus 7 that's still stock. It's been in the drawer for a few years, and I pulled it out to make sure I had any important data copied off, in preparation to sell it. However, it is stuck on the Google boot logo. I've tried tapping it as suggested in several videos, but that didn't seem to do anything. I removed the back and re-seated the silver ribbon cable, which also didn't seem to do anything. I was able to enter recovery, and after wiping cache and rebooting, it did get past the google logo, but was stuck on the animated balls. I left it there overnight, but was still on that animation in the morning.
If possible, I'd really like to get it booted without doing a factory reset, just to make sure I don't have any photos or anything on there that hasn't been backed up. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
I should note, it was in a case that had a magnetic cover. I've read that over time, those could have caused this issue. I'm leaving it out of the case, in the hopes that maybe it'll clear itself up. I've also read it has something to do with the orientation sensor, which is why tapping it may help. This thing is otherwise in mint condition (and we still have the box), and it's shame it has this issue, as it still seems to fetch $40 or $50 on eBay.

If it is unlocked then simply use TWRP recovery to access and backup your files through MTP to a PC.
If it is locked then you may have to wait for the next version of Restock which will include an option to unlock without loss of data.
