Nexus 5 to the One M8?

Long time lurker as you can tell but this M8 has me quite interested in jumping ship from my Nexus 5. Has anyone made this same jump? Regrets or thoughts? The Nexus 5 is a very bland but solid device, IMO. The One M8 looks pretty much awesome. Thanks for the replies.

Currently have been using the G2, N5, and now M8, the M8 is a great device, something about how it looks and feels makes me want to use it more, but I am also an AOSP fan, both the N5 and One are smooth when it comes to general usage, once AOSP is on my M8 I probably won't carry my N5 around.

I would say why not? The biggest thing you'll gain is far superior battery life. Well you'll get a MicroSD slot too, but that's almost useless unless HTC fixed the writing permissions. Or if you root (which is likely), you can manually fix it.

I decided to go ahead and order the developer version from HTC. The fact that the Nexus 5 is SO stripped of any kind software enhancements is one of the things I dislike about it while I love that theres none of the att bloat. Tried the Note3 but good grief is it huge. And while the stylus is cool I never, ever used it.
Ive had my Nexus rooted with custom rom up until it started rebooting all the time and just put it back to stock. Now the battery life and signal are back to horrible, lol.
Anyway, hoping the dev edition gives me the best of both worlds. Some of the HTC stuff but none of the bloat.

Yep! The Moto X is also pretty great, and I've considered cancelling my M8 order for a DE one. I used it in store and it's actually really nice. Probably gonna stick with the M8 because it's so much newer though XD

It looks really very elegant, but does it runs just as smooth without bucking like the Nexus?

It has really nice features, such as with the tap to the screen.

Depends so much on what do you want from phone. Gf has N5 and I have M8. My battery lasts longer, her device gets faster updates, both have about same kind of camera quality but not in the same way etc etc. If you want a flagship device you get M8 but if you already have N5 I'd wait for the prices to drop or maybe Nexus 6 or some other new model.

I am very happy with my Nexus, but HTC looks very high quality and has a newer processor. But my Nexus is not old, so I do not know if it's worth it at all.
One reason to buy it would be the front speakers and the Unibody

I made the move from the Nexus 5 to the M8 and I can tell you without a doubt that the experience on the M8 is greatly superior to the Nexus 5. I used to love the bare-bone nature of the Nexus/GPe device but since using this new M8 with the new Sense 6 I have been converted to the HTC way of using android.
Also the build quality and feel of the device on its own just did it for me. The Nexus 5 has been a great device for the last 6 months but it is no comparison for the way the M8 looks and feels. I'm usually the first in my circle of friends and family to get a new phone and since my purchase of the M8 on launch day I can assure you that everyone has been admiring my M8 with envy (this includes all the Apple lovers).
The camera on the M8 is brilliant to mess about with and the user interface is extremely well thought out compared to the stock android interface. BUT I can confirm that in reality the camera quality is not even on par with the Nexus 5 never mind the S4 that my other half uses. I am a photography enthusiast and own loads of DSLR's and can inform you this with some expert knowledge.
Now the battery life on the M8 just blows the Nexus 5 to pieces. I can easily go full day and half of M8 use, this is in comparison to me only getting 3/4 of a day from the Nexus 5.
In conclusion my Nexus 5 has hardly seen use since the day I got the M8 and will soon be finding a new home with one of my friends. My advice would be to upgrade and you will not be dissapointed.

Would you recommend the Nexus?

I'm thinking of buying one, it's in the price range I'm looking at ($80-$100 on swappa), and it seems like it still has good dev support.
The Nexus is almost 3 years old, those that still have it, are you keeping it because you like it, or just because (don't want to loose your data plan for example).

It's a decent phone and there is still some Dev support. I bought mine about a year ago and have been satisfied. Battery life sucks compared to newer phones signal isn't to great compared to my RAZR. But all in all it having an unlocked BL on Verizon makes it all worth while. I thoroughly enjoy mine and will only move if nexus 6 is unlocked on Verizon.

I can join my previous speakers. It has a very bad battery, it's lags often in apps and the screen is very worn because of this early AMOLED technologie, BUT if you have only 100€ its one of the better phones. I'm using it right now because my nexus 5 were broken and I really like it because it just works. However if you have $50 more to spend when you should buy the moto g. It has clearly more power and offical support by motorola.

no. this phone is terrible, and i'm currently looking into buying a replacement battery for my S3 since it's been sitting in my drawer and i have no idea where the battery went, plus it's broken
i can probably find some way to fix it on ADB, but if not, i'll just wait until i upgrade then i'll get the oneplus one
seriously this phone sucks, there is nothing to recommend about it

No man dont do it .. phone performance is pretty random, dont know why, sometimes it flies like an S4, sometimes it lagz and freezes like an S1..

I've been very satisfied with my phones performance. But I wouldn't recommend it if you don't like to mess around with kernels, ROMs and settings.

Thanks for all the responses. I actually do like flashing roms. Should've given more info in OP. I currently have a verizon s4 but since a warranty replacement a few months ago i no longer have an unlocked (exploitable) bootloader and am stuck with touchwiz roms and no custom kernels.
Use my phone mostly for web browsing, xda app, Pandora, Google music - no gaming, coupled that with the fact that i can use the $100-$125 difference I'll make after selling the s4, thought this phone might work.
Will have to think about it a bit more.

Well, web browsing has become hard since 4.4.x. To be honest, KitKat is a mess on this phone. I hope new GPU drivers and 3.4 kernel will help.
If I were you I would buy a Moto G.

I'm using Gnex for a half a year. I bought used. So not because of data plan.
For me Gnex can still give what i need for "normal" daily use - sms, browser, messenger, driving assist, news reading, some games ....
So it depends on your need

It's a beautiful device, but it's definitely not the best. I absolutely love the unobtrusive design of the front -- just plain black. The phone is the exact right size for me, and the volume and power buttons are in exactly the right place; however the bezels are quite large in comparison to newer phones. This makes the structural integrity of the phone better, but it isn't really nice to me. The back of the phone has a comfortable plastic "grippy" feeling that makes it easy to hold, especially with the curved extrusion at the bottom by the speaker grill.
The speaker is awful, as with all Samsung devices. It's a back-facing speaker that's tiny and easy to cover up. Not much of a problem if you use earphones like I do.
It easily lasts me through a school day, though it only lasts about 4 hours streaming video. Its dual core processor is definitely outdated and consumes far more powererformance than any modern phone.
The screen is on-par with the Galaxy S3 screen, which isn't a compliment. It's low-resolution in comparison to new phones (1280x720), it's hot (as in it actually feels hot) and consumes a heck of a lot of battery very quickly. The colour is amazing, vibrant and simply gorgeous... but, within a few months, you get screen burn-in which is especially noticeable in low light -- speaking of which, the screen in low light is far worse than any IPS with a slightly grainy image, though it does retain a good contrast. Its slightly curved display prevents it from scratching anything facing down and, in my opinion, makes it easier to touch things at the top of the screen.
The phone's radio is only GSM (unless you're going for Sprint or Verizon), so if you're wanting LTE, tough luck. It also doesn't have FM or AM radio if you're into that.
The camera's not the best, but it does the job. The flash is often over-bright, and lacks HDR, motion stabilisation and is only 5 Megapixels. Front camera is 720p.
So why buy this phone? If you can get it really cheap, go for it. If not, go for something newer like the Moto X, Moto G, Nexus 5 or the upcoming Nexus 6 for a similar, updated experience.
Just remember, it's truly an Android modder's dream. It's extremely mod-able with a decent sized community. In my opinion, it is still the best phone I have ever used. I find that just the pure feeling and look of the phone is enough to keep me with it. Also, with recent additions to the phone like F2FS, graphics drivers, new kernels, new ROMs etc., the phone is still very usable for just about everything -- even most gaming.

For $100 i would buy it. The moto g is comparable and faster but almost $100 more. But I think your question is already answered

bought mine for 70 dollars one month ago, definetily worth it.

I would much rather use an s4 with touchwiz than use a galaxy nexus. The gnex is the second worst android phone that I've ever owned.

You really can't compare a three year old phone to a phone that is just over a year old. Of course the s4 will be better but touchwizz yuck it would probably be just as slow as a galaxy nexus.

It's a good phone when it was released but the battery life is quite short even though I don't have a lot of apps on it. When the battery life is in the red, it usually last around 5 minutes then it shuts down. I think it was better than than iPhone 4 at its time since it was one of the first phone with a larger screen.

Honestly, I think CM10 runs amazing on the phone and the signal is actually quite good with that version. 4.4.4 doesn't do well on it for the signal...at least for me. I have been trying many ROMs / Kernels and I have the same luck with them all. I only have mine because I bought it for like $80 on ebay and still have the unlimited plan with Verizon so I don't want to upgrade to a new phone unless I pay the big dollars.
Battery life...is crap like everyone else states. I bought three batteries for this phone for that reason and always have it plugged in, which is why I actually have burn in from my apps.

I own GNex for almost 3 years now and here are few things coming into my mind right now:
Terrible camera
Terrible speaker (Very low volume)
Slow as hell
Worn screen
Incredibly short battery life
Also, with such limited memory multitasking is pretty much not existent if you like installing many apps
Honestly, there is not a single day that I don't want to throw my unit against the wall.
Do yourself a favor and stay away from this peace of junk.

I'm keeping it because I don't have much money on a new phone and there isn't much on the market that really makes me want to spend anything.
The Galaxy Nexus is a really ****ty phone. If it wasn't a Nexus it would get zero respect from me.
I mean for an old and cheap phone, it's probably the best you can buy at this moment but I'd suggest saving a few more dollars and getting something better.

Great phone. The expected HTC high build quality. Quite simply the best build quality phone at its release, and then some time thereafter. Possibly only the iPhone 6, and the upcoming Galaxy S6 are on the same level as the M8, in terms of build quality.
Sense is very nice in its iterations on this phone (and you have other options if you don't like Sense). Software wise, very smooth running, and I get good battery life (of course those things are subjective). Boomsound speakers are excellent, very impressive sound coming from such a small device.
Some folks complain about the camera. But I think many of those folks are looking at the MP number on paper; rather than what the picture quality look like. It takes great photos for me. My wife has commented a number of times how much nicer pics from my phone look compared to her iPhone 5s.
Just as important as all this, the M8 has a great XDA community, with a good number of quality devs and custom ROMs.

It's a flagship phone, and until the M9 proves itself, it's still a flagship phone. You won't be disappointed. I have been incredibly satisfied with my M8 in every way.
As redpoint noted, Sense is a very light, very graceful layer over Android. Perhaps not as close to stock as Moto, but still quite good (and much better than TouchWiz IMHO). Apps fly on it, despite the CPU running slightly slower (in most markets) than the competing S5 or LG G3, and the display and speakers are top shelf.
Also, I will reiterate that the worries about the camera are largely overblown. Yes, you won't be able to blow up pictures to mount on a blimp at the Superbowl, but it takes very good pictures for most uses.
Finally, it's the only non-Nexus flagship phone left that you can completely free by going S-off if you need it.

Very satisfied so far. Around 7 hour of screen time if I don't game and very good dev support. It's like a nexus but from HTC. And boom sound is literally mind blowing first time you hear it and I never thought about factor when I got it.
Would I upgrade to an M9? No, this phone already does everything I need

LG G4 or OnePlus 2 for the same price?

I have to buy myself a new phone in the next few days and i can't really choose between these 2. They are at the same price here in my country, cheaper than the S6, and both give me reasons why i like/don't like them. I'd buy the OP2 because of the pure android experience, i really like it, plus it has some useful tweaks, the fingerprint scanner, and the metal build. On the other hand, the G4 has that amazing camera, and the better screen. I don't really care about removable batery or the memory card, because if i'll buy the OP2 i'll buy the 64gb version, and if the battery lasts easily all day, no problem. I've read about the touchscreen and the led issues the G4 has, and those make me, somehow, stay away from the G4. Oh, and i won't get myself in that annoying invite system that OnePlus offers, there are some online shops that already have the phone.
What would you choose if you were in my place? I'm looking forward to your answers!

I generally tell people it comes down to the users personal taste when making a decision like this, but anytime the G4 is an option I tend to lend my vote toward it. The camera, screen, sound, and the clean button setup (all being on the backside of the device) all make for a fantastic device and a wonderful user experience.
This is personally the first time in a long time I went with something that was not a Samsung as my main driver and I am SO GLAD that I did....especially now with Root Access and the ability to run Framework Modules this thing on a scale of 1 - 10 is pushing like a 12......seriously, I really do love it that much.
Good luck with your decision though and I am sure you will pick whatever device is right for you.....Just know that both are great devices so do not think I am hating on the OnePlus or anything.....no matter which way you go you are going to end up with a beautiful and power device that will be a pleasure to interact with.

I think you've made my mind. The camera, the screen and the phone itself make me choose the G4. The only problems that have been in my mind for a while are the software (the lg ux), and the display problems that a lot of lg g4 owners have seen , but hopefully this isn't a hardware problem, so it can be fixed with a software update, and if some developers will build a pure android rom for the G4, then I'll be vary happy. Oh, and thanks for your reply!

I've only had my g4 now less than a week and I must say it's a great fone and LG ux is a lot better than touchwiz which I had On my note 2. I do still miss the stylus a bit but the camera and general feel of the fone far out way the lack of stylus. I played about with aosp roms on the note2 but always ended up on tw roms so I'm looking forward to seeing how stock based roms develop here.

So, I have both phones. I couldn't decide because of the reasons you mentioned. In terms of premium the pot is way above g4. But g4 isn't bad either. I'm not so sure if I would say the g4 screen is "better". I am currently using the g4 but because a game I'm playing doesn't work well on the 2. Technically in terms of processing power they are similar. In high end stuff the 2 runs with only 2cores but the adreno430 vs 418 is ofc another story. About the camera, I can tell you it's pretty similar. I think the 2 got the right hardware, the rest is a software story. I would say the g4s cam is better but not ground breaking. But you can ask me anything. Both devices are bl unlocked and rooted. Just pm me

OP2 ? we don't know so wait for some good reviews to come out, ones that talk about real world battery life instead of useless loopback tests. No replaceable battery right. The last OPO is cheaper but there were screen tint issues with early batches. Sure, you want to be first in line for a OP2 ?

I'm really curious about the new nexus 5, and it could be an option, but i have to buy it until school starts in september, after that i don't think i'll get another chance to buy an expensive phone. So, i'll probably go for the G4, has everything i want in a phone, exept for the aosp rom, but hopefully some developers will do it.

It does make me wonder why Google can't release the nexus in time for back to school.

Hoping is a risk. How long will you wait.
AOSP means you will lose LG's camera interface as well as the image processing which plays a big part in how good the photos turn out. The G4 is one of very few android devices that has a laser auto focus and unique to the G4 the colour sensor. Where is the AOSP code to handle that. If it isn't in the AOSP rom then you will lose the functionality of fast auto focus as well as better white balance detection.
The G4 will be more premium than the nexus without a doubt but going pure has a price. If you get a carrier locked G4, you will have to wait for BL unlock and only then can AOSP roms be developed. Not happened yet but i expect BL unlock will happen in a month going by the G3.
Bottomline: if you want the G4 and its camera then you will have to settle for stock based roms.
Check out AOSP on the G3 to better understand what the tradeoffs are likely to be with the G4.

Still worthing buying it?

I really like this phone but I want to know your opinions about if is a good buy after one year released, specially considering I want to keep it for around 1.5 years..
I'm specially concerned about battery life, good software and updates or community development, ...
Also I wanted to ask this questions about the phone:
- is there any way for recording in 1080p 60 fps?
- can you drop screen resolution to 1080 for battery savings?
-Ok google with screen off drains much battery? (Most useful feature, in my Nexus 5x doesn't drain battery due to sensor hub)
I really love the phone but I'm not sure it still worthing it considering new phones like p10 and that maybe is not so big upgrade from Nexus 5x

-battery life is average 4.5hours screen on time, same as my previous Nexus 5X while my current phone 3T is never under 6hours based on the same usage.
-developement based on what your want. For me I only want a good kernel that work best with stock rom giving best battery life and performance, getting rid of kernel wakelocks but the problem is that you can't find a good kernel here. Some kernel arm for performance only. Phone's getting heat quickly while some base on stock and add extra features which are gimmick anyway (many wakelocks are still there).
-the screen of HTC is pinky which is a deal breaker for me. Love it more on Nexus 5X
-camera can't beat Nexus 5x.
-WiFi is the worst thing. Go think again.
-The phone is hell stable. Never giving a single issue and smooth all day. If you want a phone that just works and premium feel.

Definitely worth buying!
I'm not having heat issues, and battery is fine considering that you can do a full charge in 1.5 hours. Camera is comparable with all the other flagships and beats many of them in many areas. Wifi is ok, never had issues that would made me consider it as "the worst thing".
It's a nice phone, very robust, and it should easily last for 1.5 years. Development/support for the phone is great and you can easily root it (which is essential nowadays for ensuring that you get the best out of your phone).

Worth buying but I'd probably get the pixel, you could wait for the S8 (if that's your thing)
Personally I'd wait for the HTC 11, I'm guessing it'll be a beast.

If you can get a good deal then it definitely worth it. i doubt they will make a better device. i plan to keep using mine the next 2 years and never sell it. i am in love
To be fair the issues i am facing are,
Battery life can't get more than 4 hours SOT on very high usage.
very high battery drain when i go out, LTE Enabled + max brightness with normal usage.
carbon grey color scratch easily.

Some kernel arm for performance only. Phone's getting heat quickly while some base on stock and add extra features which are gimmick anyway (many wakelocks are still there).
-the screen of HTC is pinky which is a deal breaker for me. Love it more on Nexus 5X
-camera can't beat Nexus 5x.
-WiFi is the worst thing. Go think again.
-The phone is hell stable. Never giving a single issue and smooth all day. If you want a phone that just works and premium feel.

I don't have any of those problems. US unlocked. Good battery life. No "pink" screen. WiFi is superb. Running Viper10 3.5.0 with EX Kernel. Smooth and responsive. Does everything I want it to. I haven't seen any other phone I would upgrade to at this time. That's my $0.02 keep the change.

The phone is good and battery life exellent. Wifi could be better. But I miss security updates from HTC. No update since January.

I would suggest you to go for it, since prices are down, developer support is awesome lots of los+sense roms....perfromance is good (820 can be easily compared to 821), camera is decent enough my brother got s7 and we both click awesome pics....also with nougat voLTE is also there so worth buying it...

In most of my phones (htc m7, nexus 5x...) battery died when going outside with LTE and high brighness
I like to enable features as google now, ok google everywhere...even google fit, that require too much battery

I recommend s7 edge...best battery ever...amoled screen...killer camera...good development

I agree with not getting it however this phone can outperform all those phones you've mentioned and their successors whilst running more things and quicker by quite some way.
It truly is a beast of a device. If you did get the 10 you would not be disappointed, I'm running the pixel launcher with Google assistant, Google allo, amongst others battery life isn't massively different from the iPhone 7, S7 edge, all the new phones and I see the day out the day out quite easily, so it does perform.
I just assumed you'd like to be at the forefront of what's out there as I would want to be, for that reason I'd hold off getting the 10, but not because it isn't a capable device, or can't run against the best other phones out there, far from it mate.
EG: I've had a GameCube emulator running Zelda the Windwaker 90℅ of the first island at near 30fps all the way, which is no easy feat.
As I said before, if it were me at this moment, I'd say the pixel, or if I was smart I'd say the S8 (if you don't mind Sammy, has to be a good phone to make up for the notes blowing up)
Personally it has to be the HTC 11, or whatever they end up calling it.

Of course it's a capable device, just that I require a good battery life so I can use the phone as a smartphone, with everything enabled as I like, and it eats the battery so...
I don't like Samsung so I'll wait to see new htc however I don't think I get it because of the price. I will wait for a future one plus with smaller screen or a Huawei p10 when it drops its price

I am debating about the same. I am still holding to my old M8 but the battery life is not so good and the top speaker is distorting the sound and I love my stereo front speakers. But I think I will wait for confirmation on the expected HTC 11 and see if it´s much better.
Once thing I am worried about is that we still don't even have a leak or rumor about the 11. Could it be that no 11 is coming and it´s vaporware?

If you like an all metal phone, then yes it is still worth buying it. If you'd like latest specs and a glas body then you'd better wait and get the HTC Ocean. I'm sure it will come, but HTC currently is good at keeping it's secrets, as it seems.

I just bought a "mint" Verizon HTC 10 for only $395 from Swappa with S-OFF($25 already saved). Here is my list of factors when purchasing a phone:
I live in a Verizon only reliable area.
I will only use this type of phone: Rootable (with good development behind it), SDcard slot, headphone jack, USB-C
My backup LineageOS S5 is on it's last leg physically, really needed a new phone.
Prefer one handed phones.
Prefer OEM's that encourage unlocked bootloaders and rooting (HTC, LG, and OnePlus seem to be it)
Strongly prefer front facing stereo speakers.
Prefer IP68
Prefer OIS, with large megapixels (for low light)
Dislike glass phones (don't need wireless charging tradeoff for crackable back panels).
Dislike camera bumps
From that list, the Verizon HTC 10 EMEI activates easily on Verizon, is rooted, has SDcard slot, headphone jack, USB-C, 5.2 display (one handed), metal body, and OIS with large megapixelas, and is from a OEM that encourages the phone OS freedom.
The 3 things the HTC 10 fails to check for me are:
No IP68, but at least it's IP53.
No front facing stereo speakers, but at least it has 1 front facing tweeter with a sideways woofer to make BoomSound...better than most other phones on the market.
No camera bump, but I put cases on my phones anyways.

Got to ask you guys I'm undecided between the Huawei P10 or the HTC 10.. I've only had HTC's since back in the days of when they made the XDA's for O2 with Windows mobile.
Which phone would you choose.. so far the only thing I really like about the P10 is that it has 128GB of Memory and well the 6GB of Ram doesn't hurt either.

Finally I bought Xiaomi mi5s. But it happens that aosp/lineageos roms are great but camera quality and battery are much worse
And I refuse to use miui
So I'm thinking again about htc 10. My question is about roms. Since htc won't update software anymore, I would like to know if developers do the job...

That would be the point for buying it or not

It also has official support for Lineage OS and they've announced it will get a stock android O update (which will probably come around January if history repeats itself). The developers are keeping up with security releases, so if that's your biggest concern then get a non-stock based rom and run with it. I'm pretty happy with the phone. The one downside to running non-stock based roms (AOSP or LOS based) is that you'll lose HDR on the camera.
For the record, I picked mine up last month. It's a Sprint model that I unlocked the sim and LTE bands on and am running it on T-Mobile.
