How long do you guys plan to keep your Galaxy Nexus? I plan to keep it for 2 years at the least, I see no phone that could potentially be released in the future that I would want I don't need/want quad core or 3D displays, i don't see mobile gaming even fully utilizing the power of current processors in the near future.
I don't know to be honest with you. So far I am greatly satisfied with this little monster, but at the same time I have used many android devices before (10+). But this may be the game changer, I probably will keep it for a while
My line is eligible for an upgrade on January 17, 2012, I am guessing I will not upgrade until there is a killer quad core perfectly spec'd phone, or some revolutionary unforseen phone that we don't know about. No rush now.
If there is another Nexus on Verizon, that'd be my upgrade. I'm trying not to switch off my mothers account, I like the unlimited.
Will sell for the Galaxy S3!
GS3 may be my next candy
I'll keep it until the next nexus comes out.

I'm due an upgrade in Nov/Dec next year, I may consider whatever's good then if it has 3D and NFC but it depends if a new major upgrade to Android OS is due, if it is I will wait for the next Nexus as I'm fed up of being behind with the OS which is why I went for the GN in the 1st place.

Well there will be another major upgrade to Android this time next year. That's how its going down.
I'll get mine with my new contract next month. I'll probably keep it beyond the expiry of that contract. I'm planning on keeping my current phone as long as it lasts, too.
More devices to test on. Can't go wrong with that!
I will keep mine until the next Nexus comes out.
Most likely when the next Nexus comes out, or if Samsung release another killer Galaxy phone (Probably not the GS3, too soon and I've spent too much money on the GNex).
I think out of all the android phones out now the nexus more than likely has the longest 'shelf life' due to the fact that google will keep on updating it for as long as they can until the next iteration of their OS is simply too big to run on the phone.
I usually but a new phone knowing It's only for 1-2 years.
This time it was different, I sold my 3 months old SGS2 and got Galaxy Nexus for it's higher resolution display (and I love this phone just like SGS2).
When getting GN, I already knew I will be replacing it with SGS3, hopefully sometime next year. Unless the specs do not justify the upgrade. GN is great and not lacking in games department, I mean Dead Space runs fine. But it probably is maxing out our GPU. I know sooner or later we will see a great game that will not run on our phone, something that only runs on Tegra3 and up.
I'd also like to see similar solution in SGS3, that uses 1 extra CPU core for background jobs, like they did on Tegra3. So you get more processing power AND better battery life at the same time. I wouldn't care if it's Tegra3 or Samsung CPU as long as it has that feature and has decent (future-proof) GPU. But seeing how nVidia is progressing in mobile gaming department (and owning desktop nvidia GTX480 monster), I tend to want TegraX in my future phones.
Probably until the next Nexus devices comes out if it comes to T-Mobile so I can renew my contract with that.
Loving the Galaxy Nexus so far though!
Until the galaxy s3 comes out.....

I'm hoping to keep mine for at least 2 years. Although, I am eligible for an upgrade with AT&T (and have been for the past 3 years).
I kept my iPhone 3G for 3 years and my current Nexus One for ~1.7 years...
I agree with the OP that the specs on this phone can keep you going for a long time. I have at&t, however, and I am sure I will be drawn away by a phone that has LTE on at&t's network. (But first they need to giver southern California some LTE love) When that happens this phone will stay in the mix as a T-Mobile Hotspot when needed and a travel to other countries phone. The penta band radio on the GSM model is the whole reason I bought the GN. I don't see any of the carriers in the States putting out a phone in the future with a competitors frequencies, so this will stay in the phone quiver long after it is replaced.
I'm keeping my Galaxy Nexus until the next Nexus or GSIII comes out on Verizon. Too bad Verizon didn't get a GSII. I would have preferred to have my Sprint GSII on Verizon though, that phone is incredible.
Honestly, I'll probably keep mine until the iPhone 5 is released. I know most people on XDA cringe at that thought but I already miss a bunch of my iPhone apps as well as the silky smoothness of iOS but I simply got bored with it. If the iPhone 5 has a sleek new design and some updates to the OS (which are expected), I see myself going back.
Hey everyone!
My qyestion is how future proof the Galaxy Nexus is. Im not talking about gaming or things like that, I just wonder if the hardware is capable of 1-2 major versions of Android and if the dualcore lasts that long?
Who knows where phones will be in the future. Many phones that were released in 2010/2011 can run ICS easily. These phones are powerful devices and will be future proof for a while. Just enjoy what you have today which is probably the best Android device to date.

Not future-proof at all.
Everybody knows that, when the aliens establish first contact this year and bring us the gift of positronic computing, our complete technology will be outdated by the factor 10.000. Your GN will be useless after this.
The Galaxy Nexus will feel like a dinosaur in 2 years. Wait a few more months for this years crop of phones to be released. Some of them already put the GN to shame.
Modern tech gets old quickly. Be happy with what you get and don't read up on any new stuff once you get it or you'll feel buyers remorse every day.
Enjoy whatever you decide to purchase
With much luck, we will have updates for longer than 2 years. My old milestone had got 1 year updates. So the nexus is relatively future-proof compared to other phones because it is directly driven with updates by Google.
The GNEX's future in this regard is great compared to all Android phones available today.
The hardware will be outdated soon.. but not so much for it to become obsolete any in the upcoming 2 years.
The GNEX's 720p screen will hold out a long time, probably will be topped after the GS III is released. staying the 2nd best for a long time.
The softkeys design, i'm not sure how or if other Android will follow such design soon. But it's kind of a "futuristic" feature in the GNEX (the ultimate phone in the far future will have one hell of a bezel-less screen all in one piece)
Another very important thing, is the Jellybean OS.
Just look at how great things recently been for long time Nexus S users. They received an official ICS release before any other phone of it's age.. making the Nexus S better in some areas than newly introduced high-end Gingerbread phones. It's going to be the same with the Galaxy Nexus, probably receiving JB OS before other new phones then and reviving it's usability.
THINK of it this way. The Nexus One was super future proof. Lasted through a few different versions of Android. Started with Eclair and ended with the latest version of Gingerbread, and I'm sure there is dev work to get the thing running ICS. I'd say that like every other Nexus phone, it should last through a minimum of 2 full versions of Android. So in my theory the Galaxy Nexus should last up to at least December 2013 - January 2014, if not longer. Then again technology doubles every 2 years so maybe it might be the end of the road once Dec 2013 rolls around when the letter "K" Android operating system expects to launch.
just what i was gonna say! the Nexus One lasted 2.1 to 2.3 flawlessly! 3 total android versions (and i bet ICS will work just as good on it when its ready)....the Nexus S was 2.3 and now 4.0......ICS is for dual core phones but the Nexus S still runs it super nicely! I have no doubt it be running the "J" software flawlessly as well! the Galaxy Nexus should last a good 2 years! that is why Nexus phones are the way to go, in my opinion......none of this "ill wait for the next phone" BS that people keep putting themselves thru! U can have your quad core bullshi*, but without the software, it wont matter!
The answer is none of them are future proof.
It should hold up perfectly find and have excellent developer support for at least the next 2 years. More than most other general release phones. Considering most of the good stuff (Galaxy 3) wont' be released state side until fall if we are lucky the nexus will be top dog for a long time.
Why not put it this way... the screen and/or plastic casing are more likely to go before the Galaxy Nexus cannot be supported in a future OS update.

Hardware, no of course not. No hardware is future proof.
Firmware, not only will we get the newest Android versions, we will get it FIRST.
Last year I told my cousin to buy a Nexus S, she was always happy with it. She is NOT a phone geek like we are.. So ICS gets pushed ota to her in Dec2011 (Nexus S got first ICS ota of any phone), I call her and say "expect to recieve a big update to your phone soon" she says back to me, "I already got it, it's like I have a BRAND NEW PHONE!!" end of story.
Google itself said all phones will get updates till 18 mo. Whether it gets crapped up by carrier OEM policies or not,but a stock Google phone will get full updates for at least 18 mos. After that,it remains usable for another 18 months. For example, the Droid, hero & g1 still run fine. Yes you can't play shadowgun or gta on them, but they do run fine. So its fine for 3 years usually. Unless you are a phone fanatic. I know I am.

If you're talking about OS upgrades then it's going to be around for a while
If you're talking about hardware capabilities, it was behind the day it was released

Well all know that the whole 18 month thing is a sham. LG and many other manufacturers signed that agreement. You do not think they're actually gonna update the G2x a "Google experience" phone, do you? They couldn't even get a proper Gingerbread build; it was still running a Froyo kernel.

If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with!
I have owned every note from 1-3. My note 3 i replaced so many parts on since it suffered a lot of dropping abuse on my end and ironically the first phone I decided to go caseless on. I am quite the android fanboy to say but I have also owned every iphone to toy around with. My note 3 died around the time the iphone 6 came out. I decided to rock a 6 plus till the note 4 came out. At first I was just totally frustrated by all of ios short comings and restrictions. Coming from a noted and highly customized note 3, it was a total pain in the ass. In the past 2-3 weeks I have however developed quite a liking toward my 6 plus, while eagerly waiting the note 4 release. I played with the note 4 several times at best buy and was about to buy one out of contract today from someone who preordered. I do not have upgrade available atm, my next upgrade would be in about 40 days or so. I could get a note 4 for 600 flat tomorrow new off contract which isn't bad considering upgrading thru sprint is 400 with activation and taxes. Now I am heavily considering if the note 4 is worth switching to. I have to admit I was not a heavy s pen user and multi window I used rarely. My 6 plus has battery life that I have never experienced on a smart phone since this one really really odd note 2 ( i had the note 2 in both colors and on 2 diff carriers)that I had that seem to last forever. My question is do you guys feel I should wait and hold out for the note edge? While I am highly attracted to the note 4, the edge is really captured me when the two phones were announced. Anyone else making the move from a 6+?
Go with the Note 4

between the 2 i would choose the note 4 as well..but i would also look at the nexus 6 that was just announced that sounds just as good minus the s-pen
Within the next days you will hear Samsung announcing to purchase your Note 7♻. This just after scraping production of their flagship phone. (Question: After all the trouble, will you turn to iSheep? and ditch Android? all together?)

No way. I will never switch to Apple. It's too restrictive for my usage.
Just because the Note 7 has some issues, doesn't mean all of Android, or even all of Samsung is bad. Hell, even most of the Note 7's are likely fine, problem is just that there's no way to know which is and which isn't.
But to answer your question, I'll stick with Android. iOS just isn't for me.
no way, my first note 7 was working really fine, I usef for a month, not a single issue, I got the replacement 2 days ago, and works even better, batt temp 34.8 oC max, 6-7.5 hours of SOT, not lagging or stutters, no connection drops, well all absolutely fine!
I just wanted to see who would be switching from android to ios due to the recent discontinued Note 7 lineup. I personally have ordered a iphone 7 plus to see how it will work out. Leave your comments below to share your feelings.

Nop, I like my coffee like I like my phone. Under my control. Don't get me wrong if some one offers me iPhone ill gladly accept but if I have to buy a phone then I like to have as much control over it as possible even tho i dont need that much control but its not to have control.
I'm not giving up on android but after the note 7 fiasco, I'm breaking my loyalty with Sammy. I purchased an op3 and i'm just waiting for it to arrive.
Leaving samsung, and not just because of the note 7, but because of the note 4. Like xateeq, I like control over devices. I'm just gonna wait till a phone I'm interested in gets full perm root and devs within a reasonable amount of time before I buy it regardless of manufacturer (with exceptions of apple and samsung products which I'll never get again)

I ran an iPhone last week for a week (6s+), just to see how I'd like it: meh. Even with Android being locked down like our Note 4, it natively does more than iOS. And I'm not charged a fortune for every single app. I ran Spiderman 2, Real Racing 3, and Dead Trigger 2 for a week on both. If you set the graphics to high on Android, looked just as nice. After initial loading, load times were identical enough to be inconsequential. And iPhone has no S Pen. I'm also testing out an s7 Edge, which has no S Pen but has Samsung Pay which I've used A LOT. Still, death of Note 7 removes my next choice. So now, I'm stuck debating whether the Note 5 would suffice, or Axon 7, or v20.
If only another manufacturer offered S-Pen functionality and accuracy..
Note 5 isn't much of an upgrade as compared to our Note 4, and the Note 7 has been discontinued..also I've heard Android N for Sammy is more locked down than M, so I'm not sure if the Note 8 (or whatever the next Gen Note is) can ever be rooted..
See me personally, I don't mind not being able to control my device but I have been pretty loyal to samsung all the way back since the s3 and I just find that my battery life and other things are really bad. I wanted to switch just to see how things would be.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using XDA-Developers mobile app
My first smartphone was an iPhone 3G then I had an iPhone 4. After that I switched to Android. I have enjoyed my Android phones way more. I had a S3 then got the Note 4. I am not unhappy with my Note 4, just wish I could root. Rest of device I have no complaints. My next phone was going to be a Note 7, but now I will just wait till next year. Nothing currently peaks my interest enough to spend $800 or more on a cell phone. I have some interest in the Pixel XL and Galaxy S7 Edge, but not enough to get one. My brother and dad have iPhone's. They work for them, but even with all the changes since iPhone 4, it is not enough for me to come back. I like having control of my device. Also, I would never get an iPhone 7 or any future iOS Devices since no headphone jack.
If anyone wants when I get my iphone to let them know how it's working for me let me know.

After reading that news and still two years on waiting for the Note4 to be unlocked(which will never happen), I am going to leave Samsung and switch to Sony. The idevices can kiss my ass, never going to back IOS

If Samsung sells it en masse on contract to the US government, it'll never be rooted. Hopefilly after the Note 7 fiasco (especially with Samsung trying to rush it out ahead of iPhone 7 without fully testing), the government will avoid Note 8, hence increased likelihood of root.
By kid & my wife both wanted iPhones, but I can't bring myself to using it... doesn't do as much as Android IMO. I'll keep running my Note 4 and wait for Samsung to live down this boo-boo and come up with Note 8 that won't blow up.

I had a hard time trying to decide on what to move on with. Wanted note 7 originally but that's not happening. Wife has iPhone 6 but I'm not big iPhone fan. Love Android. Ended up with a nexus 6p. Half the cost and I can do what ever I want to it. Running 7.1.1 developer preview and it's great. This should do me fine till next year when new devices start coming out.
I had an iphone. Hated it. I do not work the way they want me to work. Let me design my own workflow. Apple ID losing money for the first time in 15 years. Other companies are innovating faster.
I've used lots of phones. LG had severe quality issues, and make sure you never have to get a replacement phone. I swore they just put broken phones back into boxes and mailed them to people as replacements. I got phones that were caked in mud. No kidding. Each replacement 3 or 4 of them was worse than the previous one.
HTC was good. As was Motorola.
But I just love my note 4. No reason to upgrade yet. It's been the perfect phone. I have Samsung TVs, tablets, etc. I like that everything works together. Samsung is innovating very well these days and is nipping on Apple's heals. I'll get the note 8 when it comes out.
As much as I want to switch from note line, I can't let go of the stylus functions. I love I can cut and past pictures and screen shot etc. Can't do that with any phone.
I'll be sticking with my Note 4..as a matter of fact, I'm planning on getting a used non-ATT Note 4 if I can get one for cheap, as I'm not that too impressed with the Note 5 and Note 7 has been pulled off, and I can't let go of the S-Pen Functionality.
I'm also looking at getting a Tab A with S-Pen as a work device, instead of getting a new Note phone if another one comes out..
My phone started behaving bad (random reboots, lags) despite factory reseting and downgrading firmware. I had to buy a new phone. I ended up buying a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge International (SM-G935F). I flashed the Australian (XSA) firmaware on it, and I am very pleased. The phone works wonderfully without any hiccups. It's fully supported through monthly firmware updates, and it has many additional features such as Samsung Pay. I don't even see a reason to root the phone yet. Everything is great, however I do miss the IR blaster and the S-Pen. I'm also scared to drop the phone (glass everywhere, very slippery) even with the Spigen Neo Hybrid case on it.
