On the fence need opinions... - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have owned every note from 1-3. My note 3 i replaced so many parts on since it suffered a lot of dropping abuse on my end and ironically the first phone I decided to go caseless on. I am quite the android fanboy to say but I have also owned every iphone to toy around with. My note 3 died around the time the iphone 6 came out. I decided to rock a 6 plus till the note 4 came out. At first I was just totally frustrated by all of ios short comings and restrictions. Coming from a noted and highly customized note 3, it was a total pain in the ass. In the past 2-3 weeks I have however developed quite a liking toward my 6 plus, while eagerly waiting the note 4 release. I played with the note 4 several times at best buy and was about to buy one out of contract today from someone who preordered. I do not have upgrade available atm, my next upgrade would be in about 40 days or so. I could get a note 4 for 600 flat tomorrow new off contract which isn't bad considering upgrading thru sprint is 400 with activation and taxes. Now I am heavily considering if the note 4 is worth switching to. I have to admit I was not a heavy s pen user and multi window I used rarely. My 6 plus has battery life that I have never experienced on a smart phone since this one really really odd note 2 ( i had the note 2 in both colors and on 2 diff carriers)that I had that seem to last forever. My question is do you guys feel I should wait and hold out for the note edge? While I am highly attracted to the note 4, the edge is really captured me when the two phones were announced. Anyone else making the move from a 6+?

Go with the Note 4

Most opportune time to sell Note 2

Since the Note 3 is about to be released in about a week or two, I would like to hear some thoughts on the best time to off-load the Note 2 and still get a decent value for it before the prices plummet. I don't think the Note 1 really plummeted that much when the Note 2 came out. It took a couple months to really drop appreciably, but it was obviously dropping much faster than before the Note 2 was released. I have no idea about the Note 2 value after the Note 3 release. I am looking to quickly sell my Note 2 and buy up the Note 3 with little downtime in between phones. The thing is, if I sell early, the price of the Note 3 will be higher. If I sell later, the Note 2 value will have diminished. I need to find the sweet spot so I lose the least amount of money and pay the least amount of money.
I would say the price of the 3 will drop quicker than the value of the 2.
I'm also in a waiting game.

I always do this waiting game
What I do is sell my current phone before the next gen phone is released so I would sell your note 2 and I use an old android phone for about a month and buy the next gen phone you'll lose little money doing this

How many of you will be upgrading to the S5? How many hanging in with your note 3?

Still debating. I'm the kinda guy who likes the latest and greatest. Last year I upgraded from my note 2 to the s4, but I love my n3 so much I don't know if I will be doing the same this generation! Any thoughts?

Hey buddy no offense, but haven't you noticed how many of these kinds of threads get locked? There is a thread already for general stuff like this. Now that being said, I think it's crazy to get rid of this phone already. It still feels new to me Lol.
I don't see the point in downgrading.
S5? No, I'm JUMPing on Note 4 when its out.

Exactly! S5 downgrade as far as I'm concerned. I have a strange feeling I'm going to be on Note devices for a long while. Already saving money for the N4.
Just get the Note 4 when it comes out. I thought the whole purpose was screen size?
The note series are the true flagship phones of Samsumg, dont think they knew the goldmine they were sitting on when they released it. Its an insult to get rid of a note 3 so quickly for a galaxy S device when we all know the next note is just a 4-5 months away from being revealed with far superior specs. Enjoy your note 3, galaxy s phones are 4 kehds.

No interest in the S5. The LG G Pro 2 looks pretty sweet, but I'll probably wait for the Note 4. I just hope they don't make it ridiculously big. The HTC One Max and Xperia Z Ultra are too big for my pockets.
If the leaked benchmark scores are correct, the S5 is actually slower then the Note 3. The S5 scored 35k and change where the Note 3 (at least mine on stock) scored 36,922. which isn't anything major. but who wants to buy a new phone thats slower then a phone that was released 4 months ago? I knwo the screen will be higher res, but you wont be able to see the difference anyway.
Plus, no Spen (which is 1 reason I got my Note 3) and a 1/2 inch smaller screen. I highly doubt I'll ever go smaller then the Note 3 at this point going forward. And who's to say it will come with an unlocked bootloader like the Note 3 has.

Note 4 or Note Edge

Hi everyone. I just wanted to make a thread and see how many people were jumping ship to the newer devices. And why?
Note 4? - Is it really worth the upgrade right now?
Note Edge? - Is the new curved edge display gonna be functional enough being that it is completely new tech?
I'd like this to be a spot where we can debate differences, pros, and cons. Really just looking for other people's input because I'm really torn between the Note 4 and Note Edge.
Also my Note 2 is still in perfect condition, runs great, and does everything I need it to still. So I'm also deciding if I really need to upgrade or not. Decisions, decisions ?????
Sorry if this is in the wrong spot.

I am making the jump. I think the edge will end up like the Mega forgotten about shortly after its release.

Thank you for your input ?
Right now the only selling point for me with the Edge is just that WOW factor when someone does see you have it they'll probably be like "woah what phone is that", because of the edge screen.
Sent from my SM-G900F using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Yea it has the wow factor. But they displayed the phone a year ago when they talked about the galaxy round which never made it to the U.S
I can't help myself...
I want a new phone every year. I know that some need to change even more often, but I get trapped into thinking I "need" the better screen, camera, etc. I love the Note product line. I've had all three. I have to say that the Note II was by far the best upgrade, so far. In fact, to be honest, going from the Note II to the Note 3 had as many downsides as upsides in my opinion. From my personal experience, the camera was not better - it had more features (mostly useless), but the autofocus did not function as well as the Note II. I had more blurry pictures on my Note 3 than ever on my Note II. You start to realize that once you get a good camera, the upgrade to higher MP isn't as important as having a good camera that just works. That was one of the letdowns I had with the Note 3. The other is battery life. First of all, the orignal Note had a horrible battery life and I thought that was just going to be the price of having for an enormous phone with a great screen. but the Note II solved that issue in spades! The upgrade to the Note II was worth it just for the battery life alone. The Note 3 on the other hand was a pretty serious downgrade in battery performance... at least from my experience. Which brings me to the topic of this thread (finally)...
I'm very concerned that the battery life will take a step backwards from the Note 3 to the Note 4. The screen on the Note 4 is unbelievable, but there is a price to pay in the battery. I find it crazy that the battery size was not bumped up to accomodate. I know they stated in their intro that it was something like 7% more battery efficient than the Note 3, but I don't think THEY even believed that, because it was just thrown in at the end. Instead they spent time talking about how they made it faster charging. I don't know about you, but I don't want to plug my phone in during the day, every day; even if it is only for 30 minutes for a quick charge. Battery life is just too important to me, as I learned from the original Note and I don't want to go backwards AGAIN. the Note Edge has an even slightly smaller battery and the extra screen that seems to have an "always-on" feature. I'm even more worried about that one.
Hmmm. Maybe I'll sell my Note 3 and buy a Note II and pretend that is my annual upgrade. HA!
FYI, last weekend, i saw the edge at best buy's on display on friday in san francisco. i went back on monday to see it again and it was removed.
Just setting up my edge right now, coming from n1, n2 and n3. Loved my n2 the best. Just got it a couple hours ago, but it's cool. Was going to get a n4 but they were out of stock.

I plan on getting the nexus 6 in a few months. I like the shape of it. Dual front facing speakers. Pure stock. I don't use the s-pen often. I have had the original note now the 2. I use straight talk prepaid AT&T Sim so the international 6 will be a perfect fit. And by February I may find one a llittle cheaper. I like the note series but the nexus 6 has the bigger screen and less crap and no TW. And I dont have to root it to have a pure stock android experience. I like the note 4 but I just like the N6 better.

Moving On

I just wanted to see who would be switching from android to ios due to the recent discontinued Note 7 lineup. I personally have ordered a iphone 7 plus to see how it will work out. Leave your comments below to share your feelings.

Nop, I like my coffee like I like my phone. Under my control. Don't get me wrong if some one offers me iPhone ill gladly accept but if I have to buy a phone then I like to have as much control over it as possible even tho i dont need that much control but its not to have control.
I'm not giving up on android but after the note 7 fiasco, I'm breaking my loyalty with Sammy. I purchased an op3 and i'm just waiting for it to arrive.
Leaving samsung, and not just because of the note 7, but because of the note 4. Like xateeq, I like control over devices. I'm just gonna wait till a phone I'm interested in gets full perm root and devs within a reasonable amount of time before I buy it regardless of manufacturer (with exceptions of apple and samsung products which I'll never get again)

I ran an iPhone last week for a week (6s+), just to see how I'd like it: meh. Even with Android being locked down like our Note 4, it natively does more than iOS. And I'm not charged a fortune for every single app. I ran Spiderman 2, Real Racing 3, and Dead Trigger 2 for a week on both. If you set the graphics to high on Android, looked just as nice. After initial loading, load times were identical enough to be inconsequential. And iPhone has no S Pen. I'm also testing out an s7 Edge, which has no S Pen but has Samsung Pay which I've used A LOT. Still, death of Note 7 removes my next choice. So now, I'm stuck debating whether the Note 5 would suffice, or Axon 7, or v20.
If only another manufacturer offered S-Pen functionality and accuracy..
Note 5 isn't much of an upgrade as compared to our Note 4, and the Note 7 has been discontinued..also I've heard Android N for Sammy is more locked down than M, so I'm not sure if the Note 8 (or whatever the next Gen Note is) can ever be rooted..
See me personally, I don't mind not being able to control my device but I have been pretty loyal to samsung all the way back since the s3 and I just find that my battery life and other things are really bad. I wanted to switch just to see how things would be.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using XDA-Developers mobile app
My first smartphone was an iPhone 3G then I had an iPhone 4. After that I switched to Android. I have enjoyed my Android phones way more. I had a S3 then got the Note 4. I am not unhappy with my Note 4, just wish I could root. Rest of device I have no complaints. My next phone was going to be a Note 7, but now I will just wait till next year. Nothing currently peaks my interest enough to spend $800 or more on a cell phone. I have some interest in the Pixel XL and Galaxy S7 Edge, but not enough to get one. My brother and dad have iPhone's. They work for them, but even with all the changes since iPhone 4, it is not enough for me to come back. I like having control of my device. Also, I would never get an iPhone 7 or any future iOS Devices since no headphone jack.
If anyone wants when I get my iphone to let them know how it's working for me let me know.

After reading that news and still two years on waiting for the Note4 to be unlocked(which will never happen), I am going to leave Samsung and switch to Sony. The idevices can kiss my ass, never going to back IOS

If Samsung sells it en masse on contract to the US government, it'll never be rooted. Hopefilly after the Note 7 fiasco (especially with Samsung trying to rush it out ahead of iPhone 7 without fully testing), the government will avoid Note 8, hence increased likelihood of root.
By kid & my wife both wanted iPhones, but I can't bring myself to using it... doesn't do as much as Android IMO. I'll keep running my Note 4 and wait for Samsung to live down this boo-boo and come up with Note 8 that won't blow up.

I had a hard time trying to decide on what to move on with. Wanted note 7 originally but that's not happening. Wife has iPhone 6 but I'm not big iPhone fan. Love Android. Ended up with a nexus 6p. Half the cost and I can do what ever I want to it. Running 7.1.1 developer preview and it's great. This should do me fine till next year when new devices start coming out.
I had an iphone. Hated it. I do not work the way they want me to work. Let me design my own workflow. Apple ID losing money for the first time in 15 years. Other companies are innovating faster.
I've used lots of phones. LG had severe quality issues, and make sure you never have to get a replacement phone. I swore they just put broken phones back into boxes and mailed them to people as replacements. I got phones that were caked in mud. No kidding. Each replacement 3 or 4 of them was worse than the previous one.
HTC was good. As was Motorola.
But I just love my note 4. No reason to upgrade yet. It's been the perfect phone. I have Samsung TVs, tablets, etc. I like that everything works together. Samsung is innovating very well these days and is nipping on Apple's heals. I'll get the note 8 when it comes out.
As much as I want to switch from note line, I can't let go of the stylus functions. I love I can cut and past pictures and screen shot etc. Can't do that with any phone.
I'll be sticking with my Note 4..as a matter of fact, I'm planning on getting a used non-ATT Note 4 if I can get one for cheap, as I'm not that too impressed with the Note 5 and Note 7 has been pulled off, and I can't let go of the S-Pen Functionality.
I'm also looking at getting a Tab A with S-Pen as a work device, instead of getting a new Note phone if another one comes out..
My phone started behaving bad (random reboots, lags) despite factory reseting and downgrading firmware. I had to buy a new phone. I ended up buying a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge International (SM-G935F). I flashed the Australian (XSA) firmaware on it, and I am very pleased. The phone works wonderfully without any hiccups. It's fully supported through monthly firmware updates, and it has many additional features such as Samsung Pay. I don't even see a reason to root the phone yet. Everything is great, however I do miss the IR blaster and the S-Pen. I'm also scared to drop the phone (glass everywhere, very slippery) even with the Spigen Neo Hybrid case on it.

Note 4 may have reached end of life...

The Note 4 may have reached end of life designation, where it stops receiving updates.
The phone was announced September 4, but released globally in October. With the release of the Note 8 we likely will see an end to the monthly updates. I remember seeing a document outlining the contract between carriers and Samsung for the length of time to release updates, and it was 3 years. The Note 4 has either hit this end, or will do so in the next few months.

We could have gone on and did our own updayes if we had our bootloaders unlocked. What a shame for us ATT Note 4 users.
I'm expecting my phone to die anytime anyways, since it has been slowing down in the last couple of weeks (a clear cache / reboot couldn't fix it) and the lags keep increasing. I do hope it could last me until a couple more months or so, until I could find a viable replacement or a new release from manufacturers.
It has been a long and fun ride guys! Thanks for the memories!
When my chinese seller stops refurbishing them then I'll buy a Note 5.....lol. These chinese lot are really good; I'd go to CEX in the UK and pick up one that still has screen burns and wifi issues but this chinese seller on Ebay sells them off at the same price with none of those issues. Like he replaces the screen, reflashes it etc.

I'm a bit hesitant with the Note 5 as the battery is non-removable.. I've replaced the one on my Note 4 so I don think the ones on the Note 5s would last any longer..

Well that's poo then I'll find one that takes batteries. Purely because I have a wireless charger for my NOTE 4 so I'll find the next NOTE model up that has a battery.
Lags and crashes increased over time on my Note 4... I sent it in for repair, spent $70, and they replaced almost everything, including the camera... I have, essentially, a brand new Note 4 (I did have to re-unlock the phone).
As far as I'm concerned, the Note 4 is still faster than most mid-range phones out there on the market. I plan on using it for about another year. I'll upgrade to the Note 8 next summer when the Note 9 comes out and I can get Note 8's at a cheap price.
This Note 4 has been the best phone I've ever used thus far...
Spoke Too Soon, there's an update available today! We should assume, however, that this is one of the last of the updates coming for this phone. The countdown has begun...

Not quiet sure if I'll get another Note even on a higher version as they have become quite expensive for my taste. Maybe a Note 7 FE if they come cheaper someday..
The Note 8 is great and all, but at that price, I can probably get a mid-range tablet convertible and a solid mid-range phone. Lol

The Note 4 was $850 new, so $929 isn't that much more, considering inflation, etc. And the Note 8 comes with $200+ in free goodies (wireless charger and 128g card, or 360 camera)...
Wait a while. In 8 months they'll be doing BoGo's and other incentive offers. I bought two Note 4's about a year after it was released. I paid $413 for each.

True..I bought my Note 4 a year after release and at roughly the same price you got them.
That might be the path I'll follow, but if my Note 4 gives up on me on the next 3 months, I'll just probably get a mid-ranger in the meantime, since the Note 8 will most likely still be a great device even if you get one after a year.
After a few months I have to say that you were exactly right. I just check the official update page on ATT, they stopped the monthly update since August. But I'm satisfied with 3 years support.
Note 4s are $170 ish now on eBay.
The August 2017 update isn't OTA at all. On the att website, it is displayed as the latest and probably the last update. But definitely not ota so I'd advise downloading from where ever and update like you do with previous updates......4GB SD card, button manipulation blah blah

Duracell are making batteries for the note 4. Priced at $40 on eBay
I know I might be a freak and a phone collector for the past year or so, but I just bought a brand new Note 4 for $130 I was able to bid on it and win it on ebay. It was just too good deal to pass up as I was randomly checking phones on ebay.
I used this phone for a year as a company phone back in 2016 and it impressed the hell out of me, while I was a huge Apple fan and an iphone 5S user, a that phone felt like a joke, after carrying together with the Note 4.
I quit that job, I got a new one, there is no company phone, but ever since then, I got so used to having 2 phones all the time, that I still carry 2 phones. Nostalgia yeah, but this phone kicks major a$$ even today, mid rangers in the $350-$400 still struggle to show anything better in the first half of 2018. Trust me on this, I tried several (on amazon, bought ->returned it a week later). I have tried 6-7 mid rangers already just in the last year and this, they all disappoint in one or more major areas, while I don't want flagships. My last iphone was an iphone 8 and even that was disappointing, reminded me of my 6S too much and felt like a waste of money so I sold it and from the price I started to buy droids.
Note 4s are found on eBay being sold by the Chinese for around £130 - £170 fully refurbished with Android 5. Purchased 3 in the past and worked very well. Quick update to the latest firmware I have on file which is last year's one but works very well. Bought a xi pack which is cheap so I can charge it wirelessly. The next phone maybe the note 5 which is on eBay for £315 so still new but I'll wait a year and see how much it's come down to

Uhm..Note 5 isn't much of an upgrade to the Note 4, but the Note 8 is still relatively new and it's still quite expensive.. Maybe a Note FE perhaps?
my note 2 broke and at the time the note 5 was newest. the note4 was nolonger sold in stores but ATT website still had it available. i bought it from the website because i wanted expandable sd and replaceable battery. about a week ago my phone started lagging badly and would shutdown and restart. i assumed a update broke something because i just replaced the battery a few days earlier because it felt like it was draining quicker than usual.
well i went into att store and they informed me that i was overdue for a upgrade, exactly 4 days before my phone started acting messed up. i think they do something to intentionally break your phone so you have no choice but to upgrade. Now i have a cheap LG x venture.. What can i do with this note4? can i install a different operating system on it? maybe linux or atleast a clean version of android so i can use it like a tablet?
