Stop prompt to install MM? - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The instructions I have to stop the prompt to update to MM is to to System Folder > Etc > Security and rename “Otacerts.zip” to “Otacerts.zip.bak”. However, when I try to rename it, I get "access is denied."
I am using FX File Explorer with the root add on. I'm on 5.1.1.

I figured out what I was doing wrong in FX File Explorer and was able to rename Otacerts.zip” to “Otacerts.zip.bak. After rebooting, I am still getting prompted to install the system update.

I guess you have to know the correct keywords in search. This is what worked for me: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67197819&postcount=4
I hope this helps someone else.

As we don't have write access to /system on a normal booted desire, you have to do all your work in recovery-mode.
I can get into recovery mode ok but how do I edit the file I want from there?
The options I have are:
- Reboot system now
- USB-MS toggle
- Backup/Restore
- Flash zip from sdcard
- Wipe
- Partition sdcard
- Other
- Power off
Extract the file out of the rom, change it, than push it back to the rom.
You can do that from ADB shell while your phone is in recovery.
You can find commands how to backup files and push/delete them back to ROM on this forums, or you can search it on internet.
dont forget to mount /system
adb shell in a new terminal screen
then mount /system
I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
I've tried the method suggested by allla and ivicask ie, using adb commands in recovery mode and I get the same result as using root explorer, the file appears to have copied successfully it reboots but the original file is back again
I've also tried vastlopers method and after lots of reading found that the device needs to be booted normally to 'remount' however when I try to push the file now it says "Directory not empty"
It seems to me that this adb method is just a long winded alternative to root explorer, none of which get the desired result.
Please help?
Bump. Bump.
I've now tried adb file explorer but can't figure out how to install Busybox on my device.
I'm out of ideas. Someone must know how to edit/overwrite the main.conf file.
I'm being told elsewhere on this Forum that the Desire cannot yet be fully rooted for r/w access to the /system/ folder. Is this correct?

[Q] remove su/reroot

Ok so my one x is on stock jb "rooted" now but im having a problem with su only seemingly picking up half of the requests apps send to it. the rootchecker app says the su/superuser dirs are there but it says there is no root.
It was working before the OTA and i still have some apps working fine that need root but others aren't getting allowed and theres no prompt for them, but if i remove the apps that are allowed root and reinstall they get prompted by su for auth or deny as normal.
I cant delete the su files in esfileexplorer as it just gives me an error, i cant select RW on the system dir as it gives root error but i can browse the root dir.
I want to remove su completely and reroot but none of the unroot apps i have found will work (probably because of JB) and i don't know the fastboot commands to remove what i need to remove.
Anyone have any ideas?

reroot via recovery mode, have you ever think of that ?
or try to use adb command to delete the old superuser file / replace the old superuser file with the working one
Reboot into recovery (turn on whilst holding Volume - [down])
adb uninstall superuser.apk (or whatever its named on your device)
Download new SuperUser
adb install SuperUserNew.apk (Or whatever the file name of the new one is)
Goodluck
Thanks Wilks3y, ive tried the uninstall command but i get this error:
/sbin/sh: pm: not found
The apk in the system/app folder is called superuser.apk

what is the name of the superuser that you have downloaded ? (the new one, not the old one at system/app/)
if it's the same name "superuser.apk" then the command is "adb install superuser.apk"
or go to recovery mode and apply flashable zip to replace the superuser files
download this one http://download.chainfire.eu/298/SuperSU/CWM-SuperSU-v0.99.zip
put in your sdcard
go to recovery
apply this supersu package

Can't copy GoogleServicesFramework.apk to /system/app directory

I have been able to root my Kindle and want to get the store working.
I think I need to copy the Google Services Framework APK to the /system/app directory.
I am using ES File Explorer version 1.6.2.5.
My Kindle is version 6.3.2.
When I try to copy the file from the SD card to the /system/app directory it says unable to copy.
Thanks in advance for the help
Did you mount system as read/write?
I'm afraid I don't know what that means. I used KFU 0.9.6 to root the device. I had installed ES file explorer before I did the rooting. Does explorer need to be read/write, or is that an option for KFU? Is it an option I can change or do I have to re-install something?

ES File Explorer should have the option to do so, but I don't use it so I couldn't say for sure. If you can't figure it out, I'm sure someone around here will be able to help.
I found the Root settings in ES F E and checked the option for Root Explorer. It gave me a message that test fails option not allowed on your phone. Not sure if that is what I should be looking for or not.

Do you have an ADB connection?
The Mount File System option is greyed out.
Below that it says Mount/ , /system as writable.
Does that have to be installed after the rooting is done?
Is there another file explorer option that is better?
Should I uninstall and re-install ES?
ES is on the Kindle. I have copied the APK to the kindle and to the SDcard directory. When I am connected to the computer, my computer only has access to the sdcard directory. I can't even see the /system folder.
ES can see the folder, but can't write to it.

You still didn't answer my question. Do you have a connection with ADB? You were able to root it weren't you? You must have had an ADB connection at some point.
Sorry, Since I was trying to copy the file with out the device connected to the computer, I didn't think it mattered.
When connected to the computer, in device manager, it's Android Composite ADB Interface.
The Kindle shows up as a drive in Windows Explorer. At one point when I was doing the root, it did not show up as a drive.
If I can copy from my computer to the /system directory, that would be great, but since i don't have access to that through the computer, I was copying from the download directory on the Kindle to the /system directory on the Kindle.

You say you used the KFU to root...do you still have it available? Run it and see if it shows ADB ONLINE.
Yes, the ADB status is online when I run KFU. I also ran Super One Click and it said your device apears to be rooted.
I also installed the app, mount /system (rw/ro).
when I select mount rw, it says the system dir remounted with r/w permission.

Soooo...problem solved, right?
I wish it were that easy. Even though it says it's mounted in r/w mode, I can't get it to copy. Should I try and root it again? Could I have done something wrong? I used KFU and did root with superuser. Should I use Super One Click and unroot then try to root again? I don't remember any options for me to select wrong. Is there a PC tool that alllows you to copy directly to the /system directory? I really thought I was past the hard part. Thanks again for all the help.
Okay, since you have KFU and you have connection with ADB, press Shift then Right-click on the KFU "tools" folder and select "Open command window here". At the command prompt that opens up enter the following (omitting the comments in red, of course) ;
Code:
$ adb push /local/path/to/GoogleServicesFramework.apk /sdcard/ [COLOR=Red]<-- Replace "/local/path/to/..." with the location of GoogleServicesFramework.apk on your computer
[/COLOR]
$ adb shell
$ su [COLOR=Red]<-- If you receive an error here, you need to re-root
[/COLOR]~ # mount -o remount,rw ext4 /system [COLOR=Red]
[/COLOR]~ # mv /sdcard/GoogleServicesFramework.apk /system/app/GoogleServicesFramework.apk
~ # chmod 644 /system/app/GoogleServicesFramework.apk
~ # pm install -r /system/app/GoogleServicesFramework.apk
do the same for AccountAndSyncSettings and GoogleLoginService, reboot, then do the same for Vending.apk (I'm assuming you are trying to install the Market, right?)
Ok. I think I might see the issue. When I rooted the Kindle I did not have the apk copied to the device. It looks like there is a move command that copies the APK file from the SDcard to /sysstem/app folder. I think I need to put the apk in the proper place on the device and then un-root and then try and root it again.
Yes I am tyring to get the market running.
So you are saying there are 3 files that need to be copies? I have the file com.android.vending_3.8.15.apk, but I do not have AccountAndSyncSettings.
The more I read your reply, I'm less sure of myself. Before I root with KFU (or maybe super one click) do I need to have files copied to the Kindle? I guess I would have expected KFU to have these files, but OK if not included. Does KFU attempt to copy the framework file to the proper directory? If so, where does the files need to exist before starting?
I think your instructions here are a command line version of what I am trying to do with ES File Explorer. Is that true?

You need AccountAndSyncSettings. Are you using a tutorial for this? If so, which, one?
And yes, it is the command line version of what you're trying to accomplish with ES. It will give you more control and you'll be less likely to screw up.
Sure is rooted?
I recently back to stock firm to can check battery issues. I was using JB Hashcode very happy so far and was thinking go back again, but a short pass by the stock firmware was a really bad idea because got an update on the air (6.3.2) and lose my rooted status. I've used KFU again with no luck. Root explorer, droidwall says that i'm not rooted... So sad. Any ideas?

What does this have to do with the topic at hand?
Sorry for not getting back earlier. My weekend included getting hit by a deer. Really messed all my plans up.
I used the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399889.
These screenshots show an option to install Google Apps, but I don't see that option when I run it. I guess I'm a little confused. Are there different instructions I should be following?

[Guide] AdAway for systemless hosts file

About the only reason I root my phone is to install AdAway. I'd prefer to not modify the system partition to help make OTA's easier to get and to allow Android Pay to work. AdAway has a flashable .zip file that preps the hosts file to use the systemless root structure that comes along with SuperSU. Unfortunately, that script depends on being able to access the /data partition inside of TWRP which isn't going to happen any time soon on the HTC 10. Fortunately, it is easy for us to manually replicate what the flashable .zip is trying to do.
This isn't a detailed how-to, but more of a set of guidelines. Don't blame me if your phone explodes.
Root the phone with the latest SuperSU.
Download the AdAway_systemless_hosts_v2.zip file from the Unofficial AdAway thread.
Extract the files from inside the zip. We are only interested in two files in the support folder.
Connect the phone to your PC and turn on file transfer mode.
Copy "hosts" and "0000adaway.script" that you just extracted to the internal storage of your phone.
Use a program file Root Explorer to move "hosts" into /su/etc and move "0000adaway.script" into /su/su.d (this probably could have been done with ADB push, but I got permission errors when I tried it that way and I'm impatient and lazy).
Chmod 0755 /su/su.d/0000adaway.script (I used a root shell on the phone via ADB)
Install AdAway (I used the link in the Unofficial AdAway thread.)
Reboot the phone.
Run AdAway like normal. By default it should use /system/etc/hosts which is what you want.
If something doesn't work, figure out why and fix it. I'm happy to answer questions to the best of my ability.

Yes, but it modifies the /system partition unless you do the trick in OP. If I'm correct, you will have problems with OTA updates and Google Pay if you let AdAway directly modify the hosts file on /system.
Now that TWRP can access /data, can we just flash the zip?

Yes, you can. I downloaded that zip and apk from the Unofficial AdAway thread linked above. Booted into TWRP, flashed the newest betaSuperSU2.74-2-forceencrypt (not related to this, just so I'd be on the latest version), then the AdAway_systemless_hosts_v2.zip, rebooted and installed the apk and let it run. Rebooted. Showing hosts location as /system32/etc/hosts as the OP says is a good thing, and both files mentioned are in their correct places per Root Browser. [emoji106]

Sorry that it doesn't completely match the thread here but I think my question could fit in here anyway.
Do I suggest correctly that with systemless root, systemless AdAway and the stock recovery OTAs should be fully usable? Since there's no other modification to /system then.

I believe that is correct. There hasn't been a new OTA for my phone yet so I can't verify. However, when I do the check for new software it tells me no new updates (as opposed to the message about the files system being corrupt). I believe Android Pay should also work. I have it installed and added a new card, but I haven't tested making a purchase yet.
Thanks for the guide.

Your device may use su, & still not have an su folder (at all) that is used for hosts file (ie systemless root). Just do this..
Download... Terminal emulator.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jackpal.androidterm
Open terminal
Then enter these commands.. "Quote"
su
mount -orw,remount /system
rm /system/etc/hosts
ln -s /data/data/hosts /system/etc/hosts
mount -orw,remount /system
Now open AdAway go to preferences and select option to " Target hosts file"
Select /data/data/hosts
Enjoy..

But I did other than using the ARM64 nano. Started with ARM nano but no room and succeeded with ARM pico. Then did every command listed starting with ABD shell. Failed at the CP command. Said could not find file. That's when I started to manually copy it.
I tried the method in the aftvnews guide (and did it step by step just as instructed) and also tried Root Explorer on the FTV...no go. The Phonesky folder was created, but the Phonesky.apk will not copy to that directory. I even changed the directory to writeable in Root Explorer.

I'll give it a rest for now. Haven't recovered from my first effort. Does seem the original command did not really point to "Phonesky".
We'll I'll be go to heck. /data/media/0/ IS the /sdcard/. Everything I think is at /sdcard/ is there. Even "phonesky" is there. This alias addressing is maddening.

if you can't sign in youtube, you can download:
• Google Play Store 6.3.08.B-xhdpi [8] 2624459
•Disable Service
install google play store the same guide.
in disable service: tap system > play store -> uncheck “ReschedulerUsingAlarmManager$CheckWifiAndAutoUpdate”.
I gave up. Play Store is there but i can't get past the charcoal hued geometric patterned screen. Purged a bunch of stuff but still can't get Nano to load due to lack of space. TWRP restored back to where I was before starting this failed quest.
I have gotten very good at downloading APK's from the Store with a Chrome extension or extracting them from my phone. Sideloading is pain but works.
“cp /sdcard/Phonesky.apk /system/priv-app/Phonesky/” – is not a directory.
