About the only reason I root my phone is to install AdAway. I'd prefer to not modify the system partition to help make OTA's easier to get and to allow Android Pay to work. AdAway has a flashable .zip file that preps the hosts file to use the systemless root structure that comes along with SuperSU. Unfortunately, that script depends on being able to access the /data partition inside of TWRP which isn't going to happen any time soon on the HTC 10. Fortunately, it is easy for us to manually replicate what the flashable .zip is trying to do.
This isn't a detailed how-to, but more of a set of guidelines. Don't blame me if your phone explodes.
Root the phone with the latest SuperSU.
Download the AdAway_systemless_hosts_v2.zip file from the Unofficial AdAway thread.
Extract the files from inside the zip. We are only interested in two files in the support folder.
Connect the phone to your PC and turn on file transfer mode.
Copy "hosts" and "0000adaway.script" that you just extracted to the internal storage of your phone.
Use a program file Root Explorer to move "hosts" into /su/etc and move "0000adaway.script" into /su/su.d (this probably could have been done with ADB push, but I got permission errors when I tried it that way and I'm impatient and lazy).
Chmod 0755 /su/su.d/0000adaway.script (I used a root shell on the phone via ADB)
Install AdAway (I used the link in the Unofficial AdAway thread.)
Reboot the phone.
Run AdAway like normal. By default it should use /system/etc/hosts which is what you want.
If something doesn't work, figure out why and fix it. I'm happy to answer questions to the best of my ability.

Yes, but it modifies the /system partition unless you do the trick in OP. If I'm correct, you will have problems with OTA updates and Google Pay if you let AdAway directly modify the hosts file on /system.
Now that TWRP can access /data, can we just flash the zip?

Yes, you can. I downloaded that zip and apk from the Unofficial AdAway thread linked above. Booted into TWRP, flashed the newest betaSuperSU2.74-2-forceencrypt (not related to this, just so I'd be on the latest version), then the AdAway_systemless_hosts_v2.zip, rebooted and installed the apk and let it run. Rebooted. Showing hosts location as /system32/etc/hosts as the OP says is a good thing, and both files mentioned are in their correct places per Root Browser. [emoji106]

Sorry that it doesn't completely match the thread here but I think my question could fit in here anyway.
Do I suggest correctly that with systemless root, systemless AdAway and the stock recovery OTAs should be fully usable? Since there's no other modification to /system then.

I believe that is correct. There hasn't been a new OTA for my phone yet so I can't verify. However, when I do the check for new software it tells me no new updates (as opposed to the message about the files system being corrupt). I believe Android Pay should also work. I have it installed and added a new card, but I haven't tested making a purchase yet.
Thanks for the guide.

Your device may use su, & still not have an su folder (at all) that is used for hosts file (ie systemless root). Just do this..
Download... Terminal emulator.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jackpal.androidterm
Open terminal
Then enter these commands.. "Quote"
su
mount -orw,remount /system
rm /system/etc/hosts
ln -s /data/data/hosts /system/etc/hosts
mount -orw,remount /system
Now open AdAway go to preferences and select option to " Target hosts file"
Select /data/data/hosts
Enjoy..
If you still have ads in apps do this!!!

As we don't have write access to /system on a normal booted desire, you have to do all your work in recovery-mode.
I can get into recovery mode ok but how do I edit the file I want from there?
The options I have are:
- Reboot system now
- USB-MS toggle
- Backup/Restore
- Flash zip from sdcard
- Wipe
- Partition sdcard
- Other
- Power off
Extract the file out of the rom, change it, than push it back to the rom.
You can do that from ADB shell while your phone is in recovery.
You can find commands how to backup files and push/delete them back to ROM on this forums, or you can search it on internet.
dont forget to mount /system
adb shell in a new terminal screen
then mount /system
I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.
I've tried the method suggested by allla and ivicask ie, using adb commands in recovery mode and I get the same result as using root explorer, the file appears to have copied successfully it reboots but the original file is back again
I've also tried vastlopers method and after lots of reading found that the device needs to be booted normally to 'remount' however when I try to push the file now it says "Directory not empty"
It seems to me that this adb method is just a long winded alternative to root explorer, none of which get the desired result.
Please help?
Bump. Bump.
I've now tried adb file explorer but can't figure out how to install Busybox on my device.
I'm out of ideas. Someone must know how to edit/overwrite the main.conf file.
I'm being told elsewhere on this Forum that the Desire cannot yet be fully rooted for r/w access to the /system/ folder. Is this correct?

Yes it is. It's also written in the root tutorial!
[Update 12/23] For those of you unable to install the new system update, I've found a solution -- scroll down to the update! I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGES THAT MAY OCCUR!
So I figured I'd at least get things started - Credit goes to whomever first tried z4root on their Droid Pro - and to mahst687 for the deodexing.
Lets Begin!
Resources:
Motorola ADB Driver
Android SDK
xUltimate V2.2.2
(Can't post links apparently, sorry -- googles your friend!)
#1 Root:
As seen on numerous android sites already, root is obtainable via z4root in the market. It may not work the first, second, or even third time -- just keep trying, it works I promise.
#2 Bootstrap and Clockwork Recovery
Download and install 'Rom Manager' from the Market. Once installed flash the Droid2 Clockwork Recovery. After flashing, obtain the Droid2 Bootstrapper and install it. Confirm Clockwork Recovery works by booting to recovery via Bootstrap.
#2 Deodex:
Download Android SDK for ADB, as well as the Motorola ADB Drivers posted above. Second, download xUltimate - also posted above. Once everything is downloaded and installed we're ready to begin.
1. Run Main in the xUltimate package - if the ADB drivers installed successfully you should be greeted with a menu containing several options - great!
2. Next run option 1.
3. Run option 2.
3. Run option 3 - sit back and relax for a bit
4. Once option 3 is done doing its thing, navigate to the xUltimate folder, more specifically the "origi_frame", and delete guava.odex
5. Run option 4 - it'll be a short wait
6. Exit the xUltimate
7. Enable USB Mass Storage on the phone and transfer both "done_app", and "done_frame" to the ROOT of the SD card.
8. Once both folders have transferred disable USB Storage, but keep the phone plugged in via USB.
9. Open up a command prompt and browse to the android SDK Tools folder (or where ever your ADB executable is located).
10. Enter the following commands:
Code:
adb shell
su
stop
mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
cp /sdcard/done_app/* /system/app/
cp /sdcard/done_frame/* /system/framework/
rm /system/app/*.odex
rm /system/framework/*.odex
mount -o ro,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
reboot
11. If all went well your phone should reboot - which may take a few minutes. Enjoy!
[Update]12/23/2010
For those of you unable to get the new Droid Pro OTA working I have found a solution! You will need:
1)Root
2)Clockwork Recovery
3)System.img from update
4)Current Nandroid backup of your phone
5)ADB drivers and ASDK
So lets begin.
1)Boot into Clockwork recovery and create a backup of your phone.
2)Once complete, mount the phone as USB storage and pull the system.img file from the nandroid backup folder, as well as the nandroid.md5 (KEEP THESE FILES SAFE!!!!!)
3)Obtain the system.img file from here (Compliments of whoopsiedaisy).
4)Replace the system.img file in the Nandroid backup folder on your PHONE.
5)ADB into your phone (preferably still in recovery) and do the following:
Code:
adb shell
# cd /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/2010-xx-xx.xx.xx.xx
# rm nandroid.md5
# md5sum *img > nandroid.md5
6)If all goes will it should create a new MD5 checksum file utilizing the new system.img
7)Go to the 'backup and restore' menu in Clockwork, and select 'Advanced Restore'
8)Select the correct nandroid backup folder where the new system.img file is located, and then select 'Restore System'
9)Assuming all goes well, go to Settings, About and check your new system version!
Nice, can't wait to try this on my wifes phone after work.

Not at all. Simply run z4 if all you require is root access (and a host of apps like Wireless Tether, DroCap, Titanium Backup ...)
Can you please post the quickoffice apk from the Dpro so I can put on an DX? Same would go for the software that allows me to Invite attendees to meetings using GAL. It be copasetic if you can.
Thanks a ton! Freaking worked flawlessly on my Droid X.

Cool. Cant wait to try this on my wife's phone.
I downloaded everything you said and i started my deodex but when i select option 3 in main it tells me "error no odex file" have i done something wrong please advise
Is it really that simple?
I feel like I must be missing something. I just download an app from the market and reboot and I'm rooted?
Also, what is the deodex for? I want to root my phone to install the apps I want and I want wifi tether. Do I need it?
Also, I really want to understand what is going on under the hood, but I don't know where to start. Is there a 'for dummies' tutorial somewhere that I can go to to start understanding what all of this stuff is, so I can make informed decisions for myself about what I want instead of begging for help on internet forums? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

You'll only see the unroot button once you've rooted. Otherwise, it will first show only the "root" option.

I was rooted. I had titanium installed and superuser. Z4 ran fine but I had an old version of it. I dont know if that matters but thats all I did. I downloaded the 1.3 version and I now have the unroot button. On the old version there was no option for temp root either. Just root. On the version I have now there is a temp root and perm root button.
Would just like to let people know that your method for "updating" via nandroid backup would not work for me. Followed all the instructions to the letter and during the advanced restore I continually received md5sum mismatch errors.
So I took the chance and updated through the OTA update, it installed fine but lost root. Ran z4root (twice) and gained root access again .
Looking forward to some real custom daily driver roms for this guy.

Kinda new to the whole rooting thing, just got a new Pro and rooted successfully with z4root, got rid of bloatware and installed titanium backup, wifi tether, etc. Am I correct in reading your post that I can unroot, OTA update, and re-root again? If so, will I have to uninstall bloatware again, or reinstall root apps? Or any other repeats? Any danger in doing this?

No need to un-root. This update is for the system portion only and does not touch the userdata. I simply went ahead on the rooted phone, let the OTA update download and install. In doing so lost root, but had no trouble gaining root access again via z4root. Did not have to re-remove any of the bloatware, at least if I remember correctly. Root apps will not need to be reinstalled but you may need to re-give them permission for root access. No danger that I have noticed or can think of.
For anyone doing the update the android method....
For it to work
You must do the adb "new" md5 creation portion with your phone in clockwork recovery for it to work and to not receive the mismatch error...
To do this, reboot recovery... then plug in usb from your computer... during the phone boot into recovery you should hear the alert from your computer that something from usb was plugged in. Finally, use the mount option in recovery to mount sd card to be able to transfer the .img file over to the correct directory then unmount sd card and do the adb commands in terminal window...
I had the same mismatch errors using my windows 7 machine and creating the md5 with android booted
Hope this helps
Phone: Incredible 2, running Android 2.3.3 Stock Verizon ROM
S-OFF and Rooted : using revolutionary 0.4pre4
HBoot: 6.13.1002
Recovery: Revolutionary CWM 4.0.1.4
I'm having ROOT Access/SU problems. I need access to some files in the root/System/ directory and am unable to get r/w.
I s-off/rooted my Incredible 2 using the instructions on this tutorial http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1219246 (The How To Root DInc2) and the instructions on the revolutionary.io website. (Essentially: Get S-Off via revolutionary> flash recovery CWM> flash su.2.3.6.3-efgh)
The revolutionary s-off process was successful and I got s-off.
I flashed Superuser su.2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip and seem to have Root. The binaries are upto date according to the app.
I have Titanium Backup, Root Check, BusyBox Installer installed. I had to install Busybox. All these apps run properly. I can wipe, backup, and install system app data via Titanium Backup. Root Check says I have root access and the correct Busybox location.
The Problem
I installed Root Explorer today and I am successfuly able to change from R/O to R/W and back on the root directory and on the SDCard. But when I go to the System directory I cannot change from R/O to R/W.
Tryed to connect to the Inc2 from my PC (winXP) via ADB. ADB Devices command shows my device. When in ADB Shell the default profile is $. When I type in SU I get back the message "SU: permission denied" I do not get a prompt from Superuser on the phone to give access.
(To see if the problem was in the steps I was doing I tried this on my rooted Incredible 1 and in Root Explorer I was successfully able to remount the System directory from R/O to R/W and back. But the same problem with ADB I have on both Inc1 and Inc2. (Inc1 was s-off/rooted with Unrevoked3/Unrevoked Forever, with su.2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip.)
I'm not sure what went wrong where, since some of the root access is working. Any suggestions? Help?
Thanks,
that happen to me before. and the only way to change the r/o to r/w is going back to stock,if you have a stock back up rom you have to run that one,and then you can install the rom you want, and the you can change with root explorer s/o to r/w.if you dont have a stock back up you have to install the PG32IMG,and then you have to go to revolutionary and install the recovery.dont forget to turn off the fast boot.if you dont know how to do that, setting, power, and then uncheck the fast boot to off.
I dont think your binaries are up to date.
Try installing SuperUser 3.0 and report back - with updated binaries. The binaries should show at least verison 3.
I had issues to with the Root access that came with revolutionary and this worked for me.
You are on the right path though.
I'd like to try and avoid flashing the original Verizon ROM back on the phone. I'll leave that for last resort. There is stuff that I've done to the phone that I would rather not have to go through to do again.
In Superuser I tap on the 'check for binary updates', the respone after checking is that the 'su is up to date'. The version that I'm currently using su.2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip the files are modified in 2008 and 2011. So it seems to be upto date.
Is there a place I can download the latest version of Superuser 3.0?
The version of Superuser3.0 that I was able to find, when I open the zip file, shows all the files last modifed in 2008.
You wont have to flash back.
Follow my advice and install the new SuperUser on the market. It is 3.0.
Once in the application go to update binaries and update anyway.
Reboot and let us know how it works.
Those 2.3.6.3 binaries didnt work for me either. Now im fine after following my own advice.
Oh - and also - check to make sure that you have allowed specific permission for the application you are having issues with - within SuperUser.
You will be pleased to see that the new SuperUser can automatically grant Root to all of your apps...dangerous, but speeds things up.
@tinkbtrar. Thanks!
Ugrading to the latest Superuser 3.0 and updating the binaries did help! Still some problems, but making progress.
I can connect via adb shell and get SU privileges. # shows up! I think I now have r/w privilege on /system. Not sure, but I think I do. (I'm still learning adb shell and linux commands)
But I still cannot get Root Explorer on the phone to work properly. Same problem as before. I can get r/o and r/w on the root directory, but cannot get r/w on the System directory. The button turns green, but the nothing changes.
I can live with getting SU privileges in adb shell, but it would really be nice to get r/w on System in RootExplorer.

Try wiping data...force closing and uninstalling root explorer (thru manage applications...not CWR).
Should take care of it. And because you are rooted you should have full access to filesystem via adb already.

@android-incredible
yes, i looking more and more like i may have to flash my rom backup that i made right after s-off. let's see, since i can get su in adb shell i can get done what i need to so reflashing is not utmost urgent.
i'm not sure it's rootexplorer since i've not seen other posts with similar issue. if the flash of the rom backup does not do it, that may then point to rootexplorer. lets see...

At the Superuser website, there are three zip files. One is Superuser, one is the su binary, and the other should be both. Not that it matters at this point.

I too used the KFU to supposedly root my KF, but when I tried to install Titanium Backup, it gave me the same error message saying that my phone did not have root privileges... I wonder if there is something not installing correctly when using KFU...
"Root" consists of the su binary, which the system uses to give the user root permissions, and Superuser.apk, which keeps a database of what programs you allow to have those permissions. With "su" only, you will still have root permission, but only at the level of command line interface and your apps will not be allowed root permissions. Superuser.apk by itself is worthless. Custom ROMS come pre-rooted so the need to re-root is usually unnecessary unless something happens to one of the above mentioned programs. The only way to be sure if/which one is missing is in recovery via the command line because custom recovery will provide temporary root access.
Code:
adb shell ls /system/xbin
...look for su
Code:
adb shell ls /system/app
...look for Superuser.apk
Superuser can be installed from within the ROM using the .apk (at least in earlier versions it was possible), or in recovery using the command line or by flashing the signed .zip from the superuser website . The su binary can only be installed while in recovery.
Of course it all can be fixed by re-flashing your custom ROM.
It may also be necessary to rename the check-rooted executable, but only if you're running the stock Amazon software.
I think that pretty much covers it.

Ok now things are getting worse I tried to turn the wifi on and it didn't work, I tried to reboot and power off the tablet but it just won't work
{Edit} I want to know that by re-flashing the ROM is there a guarantee that those problems won't happen again.
One more thing is that I deleted the ROM from my kindle I can't transfer it from my laptop because the kindle hasn't been recognized after the jelly bean and I can't downloaded because wifi isn't working so what should I do
Thanks in advance

There are never any guarantees when it comes to computers and system software, but the LIKELINESS is very high that the problem will be fixed.

Boot into recovery and "mount" your sdcard to USB. The computer should still recognize it.

I re-flashed the Rom, wifi is working so I dl ES file explorer and checked Root explorer, but when superuser request popped, I clicked allow but it didn't work it gave me the same message, the new thing is that superuser app added es file explorer to its list but I still can't copy apps in the app/system file.
I know I bored you to death and I'm really thankful for ur help but I really need the root.

Ok, I have a dumb question, but from where do you run the DOS commands from? (ie. what directory?)..
c:\KFU?
Right-click on your KFU folder and select properties to find the folder's path. It may be different depending on wherever you've installed it.

Thanks. but not sure i understand.
Here is what I'm attempting to do.. using the root method described here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1638452 under "Getting to fastboot mode" there are a series of command line examples that seem to start with adb.... (ex. adb shell chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/fbmode).
Under Rooting the stock software, the first step command line is "adb shell mount system"
my question is from where do I start (directory) so that when I enter these commands they work?
Or are you saying that I need to fun all these from the KFU directory? (or KFU/tools) or some other directory..
I appreciate the help and feedback..
:h my::
Wherever adb is...Right-click on that folder to find it's path so you can "cd" or change directories to it. Alternatively, you can Shift + Right-click on that folder and select something like "Open command window here".
Hello every one

II. Was installed busyBox but I can not install it and when the installation device works Risterat What problem
read about write system protection.
tutos are available on this forum (wp_mod.ko file to push in system/lib/modules, and run a command on the phone with a terminal app)
#su
insmod system/lib/modules/wp_mod.ko
if im speaking chinese, dont try
but as you tried to change partitions before having write protection removed, you wont be able to do it without a restart until you reflash your rom (clean install)

Quoted from Step 2 Here,

2. Hopefully you were able to successfully install custom recovery and root.
Now this part is a bit tricky. Even with root HTC is stopping us from writing to system. For this we need to apply the wp_mod.ko module.
Download it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2707378
Copy this file to the root of your internal storage.
Now download Terminal Emulator from play store, run it and enter the following commands (you only need to do this once):
su
insmod /sdcard/wp_mod.ko
Once you do this go into a root explorer app and mount /system as R/W. Copy the wp_mod.ko file to /system/lib/modules
Now go to /system/etc and find install-recovery.sh. Open it with a text editor and add a new line at the end with the following:
insmod /system/lib/modules/wp_mod.ko
Reboot! If all went well the wp_mod module will run at boot every time so you won't have to do it manually each time!
Congratulations, you now have a fully rooted Desire 816!
