I'm gonna buy a Nexus 7 (2013) tomorrow, the Wi-Fi only model, and I'm pretty excited because I'm looking foward to making that my ultimate emulation machine and, of course, a good joystick is needed for that.
The thing is, I scavenged around google and this very forum, but I couldn't find anything that answers my question, and if it did, well it was about another tablet: is rooting really required for a Dualshock 3?
I'm a total noob in this, I know there is a full guide to rooting this device but I'd really prefer not to. I don't even need a custom rom, I'm perfectly fine with the default. I know there is an app in the Play Store but it requires rooting, and I read in some place that rooting is needed only if you want to connect it via bluetooth, in an other place it says not, in another video I see somebody just linking it with usb OTG and playing...
So how can I connect without rooting? Even if I have to keep it linked to the OTG, I just want to know the very basic way to use a Dualshock 3 on a default Nexus 7 (2013).

PS I really don't need support for Android games, as I said I'll use it just for emulation. And I'm writing this in the accessories section because I saw another thread about the Dualshock 3 in the Accessories forum (of another tablet of course), is it ok?
The only app i've seen use it is sixaxis. It requires rooting as far as i know.
But i have to ask, why the hesitation to rooting to begin with?

Because I need this tablet for school too, I keep there my school books, so I'm paying half of it while my parents pay the other half. So, I can't really risk doing something that would remove my warranty. Of course, I can tell'em nothing about rooting, but what if I need to repair the tablet? I'm taking it to school everyday after all, that isn't exactly a church.
Then it seems like a long thing to do that I don't even need, and I always end up screwing something up during these things, so I don't wanna risk bricking it either.
Finally, I know I'd lose everything if I root, I know it's fresh out of shop, but I don't even want to bother about re-installing the basic things: I don't even know how much of that is removed anyway, so I don't certainly want to end up searching drivers or something.

That's the thing we were talking about, it requires rooting. It even says so in the description.
If you just use the PS3 controller connected to a OTG cable then you don't need to root. If you want to use it via bluetooth you need to root. There are quite a few all in one kits that can root your device for you easily but if you're not comfortable then use OTG cable or buy something like the Moga where you don't need to root.

Rooting only voids your warranty if ASUS finds out. Which they won't. Just use Wugs Toolkit or something to root it, then if you need repairs hook it up and return it to stock the same way(you can do this even without the screen being on if it is broken). Or as posted above use a wired XBOX 360/PS3 controller, and look lamer but stay stock
Thanks i bought the tablet. i have another question, what kind of otg is compatible? I saw some at the ludicrous price of ten euros, the shopkeeeper even said otg aren't compatible with tablet (so yeah he was pretty clueless)

This is actually not what you are referring to, which is why I posted it. Straight from the description of Sixaxis Enabler:
Many Android devices support connecting PS3 DualShock 3/Sixaxis Controller natively in wired mode but don't work out of box, this app come to help. NO ROOT, NO PAIRING, all you need is an Android device which supports USB Host, and connection cable (USB OTG cable is needed if your device doesn't have built-in USB Host port).
I believe you were referring to the Sixaxis Controller app, which does require root, as the description says.

I totally didn't sede that, I thought you ere talking of tue sixaxis Controller app ad you said. Sorry for me being rude, I'm sorry.
Anyway bought the OTG the controller works with no problems. At first it didn't work with android games, but I just had to edit the game, and now Dead Trigger seems like a decent game :V

What do you mean by "edit the game"? What did you have to do?
i connected the DS3 via otg cable, do i need another app for the nexus 7 to detect it? i think it moves some of the icons on my home screen, i tried one game and it doesn't work air attack hd SHOOTING game
the 4 redlights on the DS3 are flashing on off tho

I mean that I hadn't disabled auto-correction yet. I meant Exit, lol.
And cobyman, not every android game supports gamepad. You can move the cursor in the home and the four lights are flashing? Then it's working, now you can only hope that the games you want support it.
Rooting is nothing more then and administrator account with admin privileges. I don't know why some people freak out about this stuff. Its reversible and you can always flash a stock image to go back to 100% stock.

Is anyone using the Sixaxis app on the new Q release wirelessly? Mine worked on J but now it won't see the controller.
I've had my Nexus 7 since Christmas. While I really like it, I still am VERY disappointed in it (in)ability to handle video output. Has there been ANY developments since Christmas in fixing this huge flaw? Any new hardware that will make viewing a movie from the Nexus to a TV acceptable? Any software that will improve the situation? I really am disappointed that I still have to watch videos through my Kindle (which I WAS planning to give to my daughter). I did buy a converter cord that was suggested here, but it's somewhat mediocre; odd "static" flashes, odd over-bright colors.

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, I spend a great deal of my time in an area with extremely erratic internet. I simply can't use the internet to stream, so a hard wire is required. I bought a Patuoxun Slimport MyDP, which "works", but the quality is pretty mediocre. Static, hesitancy. I was hoping that there was some sort of new hardware that kept things smooth and consistent. My old Kindle Fire HD had a much better output quality (although not perfect). Hoping to at least match it on my Nexus.

Actually, it uses your wireless LAN bandwidth, not internet.

Thanks again. A fairly outrageous price for a connector, don't you think. Looks like my Nexus experience will be short. I'll probably go back to my Kindle. Live and learn.

Did you see the part about those apps not using internet? They use the local lan, they don't even need internet (other than for installing them initially/license checks).

Can you explain this to me? Are you saying that the connection is "local"? So, if I have a movie on my Nexus and want to "broadcast" it to my TV through Chromecast, is the signal NOT uploading and then downloading via the internet? Because I cannot use the internet where I live part time to stream; the connection is way too slow. Can you explain how "wireless LAN" is setup and how it works? And is this possible using a Roku instead of a Chromecast (I own a Roku unit).

Right, it's local, it gets the video from your device over your wireless router, to the chromecast, internet does not come into play at all.
Do you have a wireless router (aka wifi)? If so then all you do is set up the chromecast to attach to it, then have your N7 connect to the same wifi network, then your N7 can send to the chromecast directly, with the help of one of those apps.
If you do not have wifi access point or router, then you will of course have to buy one, initially you will need internet to get the apps and stuff, but once it's setup you can play movies/ pics/ music that is on your N7 directly to your chromecast on your TV.

if you don't have a chromecast but happen to have a PS3 or Xbox 360 you can use Skifta/Bubble UPNP to stream files from your tablet to your console to watch on tv, I use Skifta and it works flawlessly on my ps3 as mdamaged said above, no need to internet to come into play, just your local network so internet issues won't affect it :good:
as for your Roku player, they have an app to do exactly that, stream straight to it but for some reason apparently doesn't support N7 2013, but supports the 2012 version

I downloaded the app you listed above. It now lists N7 2013 as compatible. I could get the pictures and music functions to work, but not videos. I have access to a massive legal catalog of MKV and MP4 movies. However, when I tried to play either type via the software I get a message that the movies are incompatible with the Roku. I guess my next move will be to borrow someones Chromecast and try it. Life shouldn't be this hard.

Well this Massive LEGAL collection of MKVs and mp4s are stored on what? A computer or hopefully not a hdd plugged into a router?

Not sure I understand your question. When I want to watch a movie, I simply copy it to my Nexus and watch it on my TV. The issue is quality from the nexus to the TV.

i am asking due to you seem to have a ps3 or roku on your network. If the movies files are stored on your computer, you can share the movie folder on your network so the ps3 or roku can see them..
Then you can simply from your tv find the movie you want to watch and leave the nexus 7 out of this

I tried AllCast. Doesn't handle several formats well. Couldn't use it.
I think the ideal solution would be some sort of Roku app that would allow DIRECT interface with my laptop or Nexus via my router. Since my internet speed is too slow for streaming, I can't use an app like Plex, for instance, to view movies on my laptop/Nexus. I just looked at Plex; very nice concept, but can't figure out a way to avoid using the internet.
I borrowed a ChromeCast stick today. Will try that with AllCast and other apps on my nexus and see what happens.

I use plex server and its app on my roku, it streams over the LAN. You'd setup the server on your laptop or PC (dual core or better recommended and 2 gigs or more of ram), and set it up, install the roku app, and it'll find the plex server on the network and you can play through that. BubbleUPNP works similarly in that it has a server (paid) that transcodes (like plex server) to allow more formats than the chromecast can accept directly.

For gods sakes to use Plex you do not need INTERNET to stream your movies around your house.

none of the options both I and everyone else has suggested USE THE INTERNET. If you pull out your DSL connection from your modem/router, you still have a local network connection between devices via your router, and all the apps we have suggested will work perfectly. Your ISP speed has absolutely nothing to do with what you want to do.

I have just gotten tired of my isp. So I cancelled their services. Now wanting to stream netflix but now use all of my mobile hotspot in one day. Is there a way I can get my phones screen onto my computer, and be able to use my cellular data to watch netflix on my computer. I have found other things like Droid @ screen but wasnt sure that would meet my needs any other help would be appreciated.

I have a smart dock and it works great. There is also hml cables that do the job too. And if you have chromecast you can mirror your screen but can lag or skip.
Hi I know this sounds like a broad idea so ill get straight to the point.
I have a front door lock. I will lickley be getting the August lock or a Kevo. I have wireless lights and a NEST thermostat in the house also, the idea is that I want to create one app to control all my home wireless devices. I might use a rasberry pie which would act as some sort of repeater to link all my IR, RF, Wireless, devices to the Internet so I can use the app from anywhere in the world.
Is this possible? How difficult?
I found a device that can act as the controller to all the individual things in the house and links them to the internet however it uses its own app. any way to override the app with my own design?

Yes it is possible
We used to have a college thesis like this one back in the day. One solution that I can think of right now is you need to have the following:
1. Google App Engine to host a web app that connect your phone and a computer in your home
2. A custom mobile app that will communicate with the web app.
3. A computer / rasberry pi that will query the web app to know which switch to turn on / off. You'll need a USB relay to connect the computer with an appliance or a light bulb.
These are the three things I would start if I was to build one again. Good luck

The main part is what you discussed. Any ideas how much I would need to pay someone to make the app? At there templates? I have some friend who are fantastic programmers however they have not touched apps b4.

No idea how much for the custom app but it cost me about 100 dollars (hardware and software) when I was in college to build the whole thing. Back then I only used SMS to communicate and not the internet. It would be fun building it your self.
If you want a ready made one, there are available ones in the market, and it would cost you about $50. Try searching for Belkin WeMo switch
I know Google dropped Miracast awhile ago, but I really really need it. Chromecast just isn't cutting it. Via build.prop (additions below), I've been able to see the Miracast device but it won't connect. Occasionally I'll even see my homescreen pop up, but it will immediately disconnect. I remember having this problem with an HTC 10 and it had to do with the wifi setting being in battery saver mode. I'm currently unlocked with Magisk on 8.1.0.
Has anyone been successful in getting Miracast to work??

Hi folk, please I need mirror my Pixel 2 XL on TVs for my job. I've Chromecast ultra but it doesn't work with P2XL (it seems some technical issue made by 8.1.0) in the meanwhile I'm waiting for fix by big G do you know if All cast can do this job?

This might sound nuts, but is that Chromecast Ultra using a wired network connection? I have no idea the cause but i've had issues with some devices (a samsung tablet for example) connecting to the Chromecast Ultra when it was plugged into the wired connection, often just insta dropping, but it worked flawless when they both were using wireless. Other devices like a Nexus 6p connected perfectly in both network configurations.
Any idea which custom ROMs support Miracast besides Nitrogen OS Oreo? I really need the screen mirroring ability to a windows 10 laptop.
