Samsung and IPhone - Note 7 Questions & Answers

I just updated to the Samsung Galaxy note 7. I will be paying $911 for the phone. What ever happened to $399, and please don't say subsidies are gone or the cost of making a cell phone jumped $500 because it didn't. I can easily afford the phone but I feel like we all are being taken advantage of with the increased pricing each year. Next year I think I'm going to a cheaper priced phone with similar specs like the nexus or one plus 4. What are your thoughts?

I hate to say this phones have always cost 600 plus you just got subsidies for signing 2 and 3 year contracts. Nothing else to it.

What i feel "strange" about the whole situation is that Samsung has reached a point where is more expensive than paper weight iPhone. For me taking away replaceable battery is a big no no... so much i consider dropping Samsung after many many years. I'm just telling myself... why would i pay more for iSamsung (pun intended) when I could buy for less iPhone (god all mighty... never) or when I could just buy something else... like nexus, one plus, meizu and others. Samsung is practically throwing me into the arms of competition.

I feel the same way. They're not going to drop the price until we stop buying their phone at these prices.

The subsidies may have been some of the cost, but not $300-$400. T mobile nor any of the other companies love us that much.

Are you serious you believe that? Look they made the money back on the backend with the contract. They would eat 300.00 have you pay the 299.00 and 399.00. I sold phones at cost starting around 2007 go look at the price of a palm or HTC windows phone back then thru were 500.00 plus but with subsides you pains 99.00 to 199.99 .

in my country for a Note4 with a voice and data plan of 25€/month i had to pay a little over 400€, now for S7 edge (some months old and considering a new phone was announced) i have to pay around 550€. In my country subsidies are still very much present. The fact is Samsung's phone have come to cost more and more. Which is kinda hilarious, i could buy a 46" Samsung TV UHD series 5 or 6...for same money... lol

The Note 5 was the same price until August 2nd. Not sure what you mean.

I think we all sometimes get use to our phone models, so my thinking is try another phone to see if I like it and give samsung and apple incentives to stop raising their prices. I think that we could be a year or two away from a $999 cell phone.

These phones are unbelievably powerful computers smashed down to a tiny size... People don't mind paying a grand for a decent laptop but balk at this price for phones that have similar specs shrunk down. It's odd to me.

Why would or should Samsung sell their phones at prices lower than the market is willing to bear? They're in business to make money; their not a non-profit organization. You don't think the Chinese manufacturers would kill for Samsung's ASPs and margins? The only reason the Chinese are under-cutting Apple and Samsung is because they have to because that's their USP - "similar features - less money." For people shopping for price that's going to win some over. Some (like me) won't bite because there's more to smartphone ownership and satisfaction than just h/w. Samsung's pricing is under pressure from the Chinese and if it gets bad enough they'll have to give up some margin. For people shopping for price there are a slew of Chinese pseudo-flagships they can buy. No one is being forced to buy a Samsung phone and they certainly aren't a monopoly.

That's nuts, with my business plan I get them on Verizon for $299.99

And here comes the genius

People with that ^^ mentality buy phones to make a fashion statement... or better yet to put himself above others... Ans that is interesting that guy should actually be on a crapple forum.. instead he is here... why? because Samsung got to the point of being more expensive... lol... i bet he hates having to buy the lag and TouchWiz and copied features from all mighty craphone... but what can he do... he must rise up somehow

Should I purchase Sprint shares now??

With sprint shares down 25% is there a possibility that the iphone will tank the company? Should we as consumers be worried?
I mean if they do fail will verizon pick them up and att get tmobile? Best bet woulx be for all sprint customers to purchase some shares since they are trading at around 2.20, compared to 29.30 for att...

Not only that I do sales for a living and I have to raise my capital every year or I wouldn't have a job. That is how a company grows. It doesn't mean the company has no money they just want to grow.

Ok..... Like I said just wondering what this all means for the consumer, my ultimate concern is should we look at this as a cinderella story and purchase some shares while they are relatively low or should we not.waste our money.
I just got involved in buying stocks and wanted a view from those in the technology field to give theirs. Often times shareholders paint a scarier picture than those outside that field.

talking about sprint, nothing to worry about, as stated before they are investing BILLIONS in there strategy, so they know what they are doing , I mean look they sold out of the low end iphone 4s models, so i think they'll be just fine on the iphone side , and as for lte only time will tell how well it does as its not even started rolling out yet.

Sprint's proposal is good for all of us. If they need to raise capital, so be it. Do you think investors are going to look at the possibility of Sprint overtaking at&t as a carrier? We don't need to worry, we have nothing to lose. We should be cheering for Sprint, they are finally making a smart move and we stand to benefit greatly from it. When the LTE buildout is complete and Nextel is gone, we will have one of if not the best network in the states. I don't know what kind of cash Sprint has on hand but I would seek capital if I was making this decision. They can earn interest on their on hand cash while they spend someone elses money? Sure they will pay interest on what they borrow ~6% for bonds, but they can offset this by earning on their cash and they won't be tapping their reserves.

Ok....^ this literally made me LOL.
The only issue here is that major shareholders and analysts are shortsighted. This has all been a knee-jerk reaction to the fact that sprint is spending alot of money in the short-term, and a failure to recognize the huge financial benefit of having arguably the most complete and reliable network in only a couple of years.
Could this shortsightedness kill sprint? Sure, it's a harsh example of the ridiculous and asinine nature of the "stock market", exemplifying the fact that it's all fake and built on people's opinions.
But I've been making and sticking with this argument: Verizon didn't get to be the largest carrier by having the best customer service or the lowest rates; they are where they are because they had the long-term foresight to build the biggest and most reliable network. And now Sprint will have one in 2 years that will rival it (especially in terms of LTE), in addition to having much better plans and price-points.
I have a lot of faith that sprint will come out on top because of this, so long as they can just entertain the wallstreet sheep for the next two years.

The 10 billion was announced by Sprint themselves. So that's officially being spent. The 20 billion is from a rumor article put out by the WSJ. So only God knows how true that is till it is officially confirmed. If it is ever confirmed.
I agree with the fact invested/shareholders are not looking in the long term. They are scared because Sprint is making such a big financial move in such a short time span. They are more worried about their money like it's grocery money and not thinking of it as retirement money.
The stock is on sale, good time to get in.
Investors were spooked by the 4G strategy announcement, not understanding the long term benefit and the advantages unification of their spectrum gives them which no other carrier has.
Sprint already pays CLWR per their contract; instead of paying them they'll spend on capex for their network for the better LTE on 1900 mHz.
Stock should rise with all the net adds from the iPhone.
The iPhone subsidy...every smartphone is already subsidized anyway. Totally overblown. Not having the iPhone was the reason subs were leaving.
Well I am about gobba buy some shares this week. At 2.20 I should buy about 50 shares

Never thought I would spend $650+ on a phone!

Today I finally purchased the Galaxy Nexus! Without a doubt this phone took a little pinch out the savings account, but next month I calculated that I would regain most, and even more back.
Question is...do you get kind of embarrass when people ask how much you paid for the phone?
& I'm pretty sure majority of you guys buy lots of Android phones off-contract, such as on ebay or craiglist. How long you plan on keeping your Nexus?
I don't care what people think about how much I spent on my phone. If someone has a problem with it it's exactly that, their problem.

Lol I get that a lot. Actually about 80% of the replies I get when I tell them are along the lines of "That's more expensive than the iPhone 4S!" All I have to say to them is "Of course it is. Just look at this sexy beast."
Planning on keeping this phone at least a year. Maybe longer if nothing comes out by then that tickles my fancy.

The first one is a tough bite but as long as you choose your devices wisely, they will have a good resell value which makes your next phone similar to an on contract price ~$200.
I sold my Nexus 1 for $250 and bought the G2x for $500... so $250 which was the contract price. Since I bought it outright, I saved $20 a month on my bill. I just sold my G2x for $200 which is a bit low but I'm getting the Galaxy nexus for $300 through work. Saving $80 a month. Ill also sell my Blackberry for some coinage.... unless work puts my Nexus on the Company bill... then Ill give the blackberry back.

Dude, $650 is the price for a budget phone here in Russia. We usually get new phones for $1000 (iPhone 4S costs even more). So you are just lucky to get it much cheaper than we do.

I dont care that this phone was expensive. Its unlocked, bloatware free, and pentaband and im not locked into waiting for the lousy carrier updates that never happened to my Vibrant. I will never fall for that trap again. Plus this phone looks so cool. Everyone so far asks me wow what phone is that....the screen is huge! I used to get sick of people asking me if my Vibrant was an iPhone 3GS...because it looked like one. This phone looks like something all its own and i like that it has no brand markings on the front.
I'm not paying for a subsidy, so I don't feel strange for paying so much. I probably would though if I had a subsidy. The $700 was $170 more than I spent on my old N1, but totally worth it to me so far. Great phone and great OS.

PS only kidding... None of that is true. I never thought I'd pay that much for a fone either but I sold my sgs2 plus a whole bunch of tech I dont use anymore so I had more than enough to cover the cost of the phone. The worst bit was the 4 weeks between selling the sgs2 and getting the sgn.

Considering an unlocked iPhone 4S is over $900 and won't work with nearly every GSM carrier's HSPA+ I'd say it's a steal at that price. Also when people give me unearthed crazy look, I do the math on T-Mobile's $30 off contract plan and that usually shuts them up considering most people pay twice that.

Don't feel anything.. this is in fact one of the cheaper phones I've bought!
The most expensive phone I bought was the Sony Ericsson P800 back then.
I think it's more like people (American, ahem) need to try to live in a place where you "bring your own" phone, paying the full price for it and pay only $15 a month for unlimited mobile broadband access + 200 free minutes and text. In countries where they don't subsidize their phones, they charge MUCH less for the airtime.
cheapest you can get one on contract is £36 ($56) a month for two years and the phone is free. Thats £864( approx $1348).
That's what I tell people that look at me weird when i paid only £415 ($647) for my GN

GNEX dilemma!

My trusty Gnex was recently stolen http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1863863, and I am currently facing a troubling dilemma. I realize there are something like 5 "Nexus" devices being released this fall/winter. I also realize that isnt "all" that long from now. However, it is a few months away and a lot will be going on. I have a little one at home and they grow so fast at this age. These next few months have Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years which are all key photo/video opportunities. The phone I am currently using is an old Gingerbread device that is "ok", but certainly not able to take the quality pics and videos like the Gnex.
So my dilemma is do I drop $350 (directly from Google) and pick up a new phone or wait? To be honest, if I could get the Gnex for like $150 or $200 I would be happy to sign a service contract. I am currently on Tmobile and they have told me I am upgrade eligible since I havent had a contract in many years, but they dont sell the Gnex! Due to the fact that all CDMA providers SUCK (and are so expensive) I cant consider moving away from Tmobile, so changing carriers is not an option. I checked around and I cant even find a 3rd party retailer that sells the Gnex AND can provide me with a new Tmobile plan. The biggest problem is I know the minute the new Gnex drops I am going to want it, but I dont know if I can justify spending $350 now plus another $500 (or whatever) in a few months.....

Don't know why you're even considering this, considering that service contracts cost way more than the $150-$200 that you'd save.
Not going to kid, it does suck that you lost the phone at this particular time. There aren't very good options when the next big thing you want isn't out quite yet; they all cost money. Buying a new Nexus will be $350ish, a new contract will cost $1400ish (depending on the upfront price of the phone and your opportunity costs); that comes out to $800 even if you resell the phone for full price (an unrealistic scenario) when the next Nexus comes out. If I could stand it, I'd just keep using your gingerbread and pray it comes out soon.
Getting a used GN if you want to pay around $200 (as Jason suggests) is also another option. Hell, you might even be able to resell it for a similar price (though naturally there will be a price decrease when the new one comes out).

Trust me, I am very aware of how annoying contracts are and that is why I have been without one for so many years. However, I currently get a decent discount from a company I used to work at (6 years ago!!) which makes my bill comparatively low. If I switch to the new Tmobile unlimited plan I will be all in (taxes, and everything) for just over $60 per month. I do see that Straight Talk offers "unlimited" everything for $45, but I don't know if that includes taxes or if it is truly unlimited. I have given thought to going to prepaid however, so you do raise a valid point. In either case though, I still need a new GNEX!!

The S III seems like a nice enough phone, but its really just not for me. I swore I would never purchase another non-Nexus phone again as I do not care for the horrible "tweaks" these companies do to core Android OS. I would end up rooting it and then installing a vanilla JB ROM on the thing, and then being frustrated that it wasnt actually a Nexus device!

I already have a decent digital camera, but using it feels like a throwback to 2002. It far thicker than my (any?) phone, requires I carry two devices, and can't record in proper HD. Yes, it does take nicer pictures but the "cons" of constantly needing to remember to carry it make it frustrating. I also must say that I got used to the convenience of my photos automatically syncing to Dropbox!
Regarding the suggestion for a used GNex, I do like the idea and I am currently searching for one. The problem is that Craigslist is so full of scammers these days. Even the people that DO actually have it will tell you its a "9.5 out of 10" in terms of condition and then when you go meet them the thing looks like it went through a cement mixer.
I definitely would never get a non nexus android phone again including the S3, I would rather go back to using an iPhone than do that.

[Q] Should I buy the Note 2 again?

I bought the AT&T Galaxy Note 2 a few times before returning to my iPhone 5. I have grown to hate my iPhone 5. The only thing I love it about are the cases I have. It has AppleCare+ on it which I really like but that's not cutting it. The phone has a very loose power button which causes a rattle. My iPhone 5 has also had dust in the camera lens since day one. Call me OCD but I've actually gone through about 5 iPhone 5's since sticking with this one. Apple QC is absolutely atrocious. I've had my issues with Samsung phones but not like Apple.
I absolutely hate the screen on the iPhone 5. I hate it!!! I don't think I can wait until the Galaxy S4. I want to be back on the Android ecosystem so that way I will have an easy transition to the S4. I also loved the S Pen, as I've had the Note 2 before. I returned it because I was bothered by the lack of cases and support for it. I always go back to that pathetic iPhone.
So is the Note 2 still worth it in Feb 2013? I don't think any other phone can come close in performance yet?

Not sure if you want to wait a little bit but some signs point to a new Note 3 soon (but if it comes to AT&T, it might be a little bit before it reaches these shores). Otherwise, there have been some really good deals @ Best Buy and such. Or... you know... stick with your iPhone, you sheep LoL

I feel that you'll be fine because I don't think the s4 could replace your Note 2. The only reason why I say this is because of that extra half inch that the note would provide. For sure the s4 will be a lot quicker than the note 2 but was the note 2 ever slow to begin with. I also feel the same way with my i phone 5. I went from iPhone 5 on Sprint to s3 on ATT then the iPhone 5 on ATT then I am using the Note 2 on ATT now. I feel that since in previously years I've been using strictly Apple on my devices switching to the s3 and note 2 is real "innovation."
I also feel the same about the lack of any real nice cases for the note compared to the iPhone.
All in all I think you'll be fine if you decide to pickup another note.

I was hoping to get the Note 2 until the S4 comes to AT&T to hold me over. I wonder if the Note 2 is selling higher than the iPhone 5?

Both are $199 (2 year agreement) with a $50 gift card from Best Buy... with the $50 gift card, that's the best deal out at this moment (changes every week everywhere)
Edit: But of course, if you're buying outright, shop around... Amazon has some pretty decent prices

It would be outright. Can't seem to find the AT&T version outright anywhere but AT&T. The N1700 is fine but I have full AT&T LTE here.

You can basically get the phone at any retail shop outright but they never go on "sale" outright. Check the websites, click on the phones, then select the "no contract" option and it will show you the full price (e.g. Best Buy... btw not trying to push them it's just that I was doing the same thing you are a few days ago for another phone... has the Note 2 AT&T for $799.99 and the iPhone 5 outright for $699.99 16gb on both). As for the international version, I'm not too sure how this will work out with that retarded bill that passed about unlocks and whatnots.

AT&T has the best price. $649.99. Best Buy I wanna say is $799? :0
I buy phones outright all the time so I'm pretty familiar with it. I just can't find anything cheaper than $649 anywhere.
No way the Note 3 is due this Spring. The Note series is typically released late Summer / early Fall. I expect the Note III in Aug / Sept.
Now the Galaxy S phones are released in late Spring mostly. The S IV is rumored for a April worldwide release. And May U.S. release.
I would get the Note 2 right now, best phone ever. And the S-pen rocks. Amazing battery life, super fast smooth.
Or if you gonna wait, wait for the Note 3 = better upgraded version of the S4, bigger screen + S-pen.

Yeah that's insane! AT&T is the way to go... damn I should look there (I for no reason at all assumed they'd be the priciest)
If you live in a fairly big city you should look on Craigslist for yours. I was so ready to pay ATTs price of 649.99 but then someone on Craigslist sold me a brand new one for 500.... Honestly I couldn't be happier with this phone, love it.

I don't trust craigslist phones myself and like the option of maybe returning it if i need to. I would go to att and t and buy from them. It is the cheapest price around that I found. I checked best buy and Amazon. Best buy was ridiculous. I ened up buying outright from at and t..not happy about the $710 but such is life. Resale on the Iphone will be way better for a longer period of time.

I work for BBYM and just price matched ATT's outright price for mine. All stores will do that
Try your local ads. I got mine new for $500.

Let me get this straight. You went back to an inferior product (iPhone5) because of the lack of cases. What are you, a 12 year old girl?
Yes the Note2 holds up very well, in fact I think it will be topic spec even next year.

There are plenty of great cases for the note 2.

Would you price match AND do the $50 gift card special? Otherwise, I don't count Best Buy (mobile or otherwise) to be around much longer to support unless they go private or get bought out.

The $50 offer is with doing an upgrade through best buy mobile. Nothing to do with the actual price of the phone. **** you could upgrade to a free phone and get a $50 gift card. And is that really your determining factor for whether we'd stay in business or not. Lol not that I care much because I'm almost done my degree but BBY is gonna be around for a while. Even if it doesn't get your support. Still the number one electronics retailer in the world. That just isn't a super strong statement right now.

Nono... Just a strong observation from a former employee of many years who has seen bad decision after bad decision over the last decade and got off the boat before it tries to turn itself into radio shack when they themselves are failing. There wasn't much money in the bank when I left and looking at the last 2 quarters, it dwindles down even further as the stock that used to be around 40 went down to 15 (almost to 10 last week) in a very short amount of time. Guess who went through the same thing? CompUSA and Circuit City and what you get left is either a buyout which would shrink the company to make a profit it would need to stay viable, or bought out to be Amazon's showroom for a fee instead of free like it is now. The more BBY/BBYM price matches, the more profit margin is lost so that money has to come from their bank to break even. Keep on this track and it will go off a cliff. Don't get me wrong, I want BBY to survive and all but becoming Radio Shack is not the way to go.
Congrats on your degree! You can now watch from the outside instead of in objectively.

do NOT buy samsung galaxy note 2

I got an international unlocked samsung note 2 . It only worked for about 40 days and turned its belly up. It can not make phone call anymore. It has a white crossed circle on top and can not detect sim card. Samsung service said I need ship it to UK for repair. I shipped that junk via EMS costing me 45 bucks. Now it got stuck in UK custom and they need me to pay the custom fee. The repair company won't accept this item untill some one pay the custom fee. What is the hell!
I just want to smash that junk into Samsung's fat face
Sounds just about right for UK as this is the reason uk repair centre refuses to accept international parcel due to the customs issue and the hassle. Your best bet is somehow asking a forum member from uk to help you out and so on. I would help you out but currently out of UK. Or prepay the customs or call their customer helpline and try explaining it to say its going in for repairs etc... good luck.

A bit of caveat emptor --- but you should have purchased it online with someone like Amazon or Mobile City Online. That way you have some sort of exchange recourse. Those places also offer "insurance" or extended warranties that cost about the same as what you paid for shipping that would enable a simple swap for a new equivalent.
I know it's hindsight - but for all of us early adopters, we always run that risk. The Note 2 is the third "get it before anyone else in the USA" phone that I have purchased from a company out of Singapore. The Galaxy S2 was the only phone I had an issue with and it was a simple self-repair of a bad home button.
Best of luck.
The thread should be don't buy phones from another country.

Nice inflammatory title.
Accept the risk of buying a phone out of country or wait for the release.
Defects happen. No need to cry fowl on the model line.
This isnt about that. Regardless where yiu buy the phone it should be covered for warranty in any country. World is not as nig as it used to be. People travelling more and fast. It shoukd ne unified warranty supplied with considering how Huge samsung as a brand

Any product will have a certain amount of failures - it's bad luck this time. The real risk is (was) buying from overseas without an international warranty.
You could've just used that money to get it repaired at a local phone shop, it probably would've been less hassle and taken less time.
Sent from the rabbit hole.
so 1 bad experience is the reason why we shouldn't buy a note 2? I honestly have had 0 issues with Samsung ATM. I'll get a defective unit sooner or later. I had 4 iphone4 in the course of a year and every one had a damn bad problem (battery, screen, home button, and sold the last one when they exchanged it brand new). You're bound to get a bad one if you buy enough devices, but saying that you shouldn't buy a device because you got a bad one, and can't it through customs is a little exaggerated, don't u think? Regardless, best of luck! I hope it all works out for you.
Regards.

The world is exactly as big as it always has been... lol
Just because people travel more doesn't mean that companies should honor warranties for purchases made internationally. Especially since all countries handle/regulate warranties differently.

You are reading my mind.
I contact the samsung support. Samsung pointed me to repair company and repair company pointed me to post office. No body really cares about it. Lot of finger pointing.
I will never buy a samsung product unless they have better customer support.

This isn't about hating nor its no where near hating. It's all about spending money on a device costs as much as decent laptop and having no support or care company who manufactures and makes billions out of people like you as you choose to ignore or have no reason to feel in such way till it happens to you. I couldn't care less if it's HTC Nokia Sony or samsung who chooses this way to treat such a small global market. I like to point at the reason I say small as the world we live in Is a small place now a days. At the end of the day you should get a decent customer care from such companies.
