My trusty Gnex was recently stolen http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1863863, and I am currently facing a troubling dilemma. I realize there are something like 5 "Nexus" devices being released this fall/winter. I also realize that isnt "all" that long from now. However, it is a few months away and a lot will be going on. I have a little one at home and they grow so fast at this age. These next few months have Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years which are all key photo/video opportunities. The phone I am currently using is an old Gingerbread device that is "ok", but certainly not able to take the quality pics and videos like the Gnex.
So my dilemma is do I drop $350 (directly from Google) and pick up a new phone or wait? To be honest, if I could get the Gnex for like $150 or $200 I would be happy to sign a service contract. I am currently on Tmobile and they have told me I am upgrade eligible since I havent had a contract in many years, but they dont sell the Gnex! Due to the fact that all CDMA providers SUCK (and are so expensive) I cant consider moving away from Tmobile, so changing carriers is not an option. I checked around and I cant even find a 3rd party retailer that sells the Gnex AND can provide me with a new Tmobile plan. The biggest problem is I know the minute the new Gnex drops I am going to want it, but I dont know if I can justify spending $350 now plus another $500 (or whatever) in a few months.....

Don't know why you're even considering this, considering that service contracts cost way more than the $150-$200 that you'd save.
Not going to kid, it does suck that you lost the phone at this particular time. There aren't very good options when the next big thing you want isn't out quite yet; they all cost money. Buying a new Nexus will be $350ish, a new contract will cost $1400ish (depending on the upfront price of the phone and your opportunity costs); that comes out to $800 even if you resell the phone for full price (an unrealistic scenario) when the next Nexus comes out. If I could stand it, I'd just keep using your gingerbread and pray it comes out soon.
Getting a used GN if you want to pay around $200 (as Jason suggests) is also another option. Hell, you might even be able to resell it for a similar price (though naturally there will be a price decrease when the new one comes out).
Used has a corner crack but everything still functional do still a great device

I just saw on tmobiles site you can get a Galaxy S III for $99 on contract. That would be the way to go if you don't mind a contract.

or you could just go buy a camera
Samsung has there new galaxy camera.

If you don't mind buying something other than a Galaxy Nexus, why get yourself a GS III once it gets cheaper. Its actually going for $99.99 online right now! Sale ends at 11:59pm today!

GSIII is not cheaper; you have to pay the price of a contract which, as I pointed out above, can exceed $1000.
The OP mentioned he/she is already with T-Mobile and eligible for an upgrade.

That does not reduce the opportunity cost of a new contract in any way.

Trust me, I am very aware of how annoying contracts are and that is why I have been without one for so many years. However, I currently get a decent discount from a company I used to work at (6 years ago!!) which makes my bill comparatively low. If I switch to the new Tmobile unlimited plan I will be all in (taxes, and everything) for just over $60 per month. I do see that Straight Talk offers "unlimited" everything for $45, but I don't know if that includes taxes or if it is truly unlimited. I have given thought to going to prepaid however, so you do raise a valid point. In either case though, I still need a new GNEX!!

The S III seems like a nice enough phone, but its really just not for me. I swore I would never purchase another non-Nexus phone again as I do not care for the horrible "tweaks" these companies do to core Android OS. I would end up rooting it and then installing a vanilla JB ROM on the thing, and then being frustrated that it wasnt actually a Nexus device!

I already have a decent digital camera, but using it feels like a throwback to 2002. It far thicker than my (any?) phone, requires I carry two devices, and can't record in proper HD. Yes, it does take nicer pictures but the "cons" of constantly needing to remember to carry it make it frustrating. I also must say that I got used to the convenience of my photos automatically syncing to Dropbox!
Regarding the suggestion for a used GNex, I do like the idea and I am currently searching for one. The problem is that Craigslist is so full of scammers these days. Even the people that DO actually have it will tell you its a "9.5 out of 10" in terms of condition and then when you go meet them the thing looks like it went through a cement mixer.
I definitely would never get a non nexus android phone again including the S3, I would rather go back to using an iPhone than do that.

Currently rocking a sensation and sold it on ebay for 370(lol) but still haven't shipped it yet, though will do it on Monday or when the guy pays me. Anyway I was wondering if the Gnex is still worth it. I was thinking of GS3 or OneX but they are really expensive I think the Gnex is still par with both
Don't you guys think?

Kinda hard to recommend against it at $350 in the Play Store. Pretty great deal.
You can get the verizon nexus free under contract right now at amazon. The ETF is 350 so it costs the same as the gsm nexus without a contract.

What?? Yeah, if you don't figure in the $1,700 you'll lose from a 2 year contract while spending around $70 a month. That's around $1900-$2000 if you wanted to pay the ETF to cancel early. The most you'd spend with a Gnex and (for example) the T-Mo $30/month plan? $1100. My advice? Get the Gnex. I am receiving mine Monday, switching over to it from an iPhone and I couldn't be more happy to not only go back to Android but also go back to an unlocked phone. Being contract free is exhilarating. It'll be worth it, then whenever the new Nexus comes out, you don't have to wait for any contracts to expire or anything like that you just have to wait for the $349 price tag again

The up-front cost of the device is a very small fraction of what you pay in a 2 year contract at Verizon...

Definitely. A lot of people are comparing it to newer phones that have better specs, but in the end the Nexus still wins. I switched to a note a month ago to try it out and I cannot wait to get rid of it and get another nexus...
the nexus is not lacking in hardware, the camera works GREAT if you learn how to use it and aosp with quick/real updates is what makes it the better device. I can't even explain how much of a disappointment it is having something so good as the nexus and then downgrading to a phone you think would have been better... besides, owning a nexus supports the true android experience

How did you get it sold for so much?!?! I am planning on doing the same as you, But the prices on ebay are mostly all bellow 200 anything above that has no bids :/ Mine has a 32 gb SD card. two cases all original accessories an extra anker battery and is in mint condition. My only doubt was that the phone is already over 6 months old and specs are decent but nothing compared to the One x or S3. I wonder how many more full versions of android it will see after jellybean. I thought about waiting for the next Nexus but I highly doubt it will carry the same price tag.

The snapdragon s4 is a much better soc than the omap4 on the gnex, but jellybean really makes the gnex shine. And by the time samsung/htc release jb on their phones it'll be at least 6 months, plus they'll layer it with touchwiz/sense, and who likes that?
Btw i just picked up a gnex today and im loving jellybean

I sold it with case as well free sd card 8GB (I got 2 16Gb I need them) and 2 batteries. Since I don't think I'm gonna need them I gave them away also I made him pay for shipping which comes to 390 dollars but he got 100 dollars freebies from me win win for everyone lol :-D
Also make sure you put it for 7 days and put a bid at 299 and shipping 20 dollars something like that also allow international shipping that's where you make you lot of money because international is like 60 to 90 dollars

I dunno why I'm going to be the one pointing this out, but that poster mentioned the ETF because there is a practice of buying phones on contract and then paying the ETF which is usually half of the price of an off-contract version. You don't pay anything monthly for the Verizon because you cancel.

Huh never thought of doing that. However my ETF is still $150 and there is only 2months left on my ATT contract. My wife has a year left and her ETF is $275. I know over the course of 2 years you'd make it up by going prepaid either way though.
I guess if for some reason I don't like my Nexus I can use my upgrade to get the SGS3 and just ETF right away.

I know I'm kinda late but I'll be getting a new phone soon..probably a Gnex since its Google's baby and it'll be constantly updated. The thing is, should I just wait 'cause there are rumours saying there will be 5 Nexus' (or Nexi) around the corner or get this? A bit worried about the performance and battery of this since I'll be using it quite heavily :-\

Take it from me... Get the gnex(GSM) you can never go wrong. All these other phones you are at the mercy of the carriers. Even with the SIII, watch and see what happens when the next version of android comes out. I doubt Samsung will be so fast in releasing the kernel/source or even thinking about putting out an update for that phone. They would have moved on to the next best thing.

If you put off decisions on the hope of getting the latest you will never buy a thing or will pay top dollar for something that is replaced in 3 months. At $349 in the Google store there is not much to think about.
The next Nexus will probably be released this year, but it probably be expensive. Like 800bucks unlocked expensive. If you are willing to pay that much, just wait. If you don't care about specs and just want a really nice phone or don't have 800bucks on you, Galaxy Nexus GSM for 350bucks is a no brainer.
I got mine last month, never enjoyed a phone this much before. The price was what swayed me since t mobile wanted s much for an upgrade it was silly. I use the phone a bit less than heavily and my battery lasts all day but I have a small external battery just in case. The camera is much better than I expected and compared to my sisters GS3 the phone feels solid and performs as well as her does.
Get GNexus now, use it for a few months and by then, the next Nexus price should be a little easier to deal with.
Get it.

Huh and is that why Gnex costed 800bucks fully unlocked when it first came out? Google might not want the money, but Samsung (or whatever manufacturer that makes the next Nexus) will definitely want it.
exactly just get it. and live contract free for awhile. and u will never go back to contracts.. so enjoy paying 30 bucks a month. sure i lose alittle. but for me its worth it.. plus give me the extra cash to save up for another new phone down the road or a nexus 7 tab. etc...
@kyokeun1234:
The reason why the GNex cost so much when it came out is because it was not available in Canada/USA for a few months. The hefty price tag (I paid $720 for mine) was due to the fact that it had to be imported by electronics retailers and sold as a grey market item. When the unlocked GSM version became available through the Google PLay Store, it cost $399.

The GN never cost 800 USD. Not sure where you got that number from. The reason the GN wasn't sold by Google originally is they didn't have their Play Store system in place. I would be shocked if they don't sell the next Nexus device(s) at $500 or less.
Get the Gnex. You won't be disappointed.

I just ordered mine. I switched from Sprint to Walmart's Family Mobile (basically T-Mobile subsidized by Walmart) and with the money I'm saving, the phone is paid for in 1 year. Phone cost $385 with shipping and tax, but I'm saving nearly $35 a month and get unlimited everything vs unlimited text, data, and 1000 voice minutes. Oh...and I get a signal at home now. LOL
Now if I sell my Evo 3D, that closes the gap even more.

I am due for an upgrade with Sprint. I am currently on the Evo 4g. There seems to be some good holiday deals on the S3 right now. I was thinking about jumping on one of these. However, after doing some reading it looks like the S4 may not be too far around the corner. Any thoughts on waiting it out or even waiting for the first of the year for some of the new HTC line? I know waiting with a subsidized carrier like Sprint means you're basically losing money, so I'm trying to decide the best course of action.
I would say just get the s3 its an amazing phone I'm running cm10 on it right now and its super fast stable and the battery life is amazing! The s4 most likely won't be out until next summer if you want a major upgrade I would say wait for the galaxy note3 or the nexus5!

I got mine on black friday so it was impossible to turn down. I had the evo, but it just wasn't cutting it. Rooted and everything stripped out of it, I still couldn't have facebook, google music, google maps, and skype installed at the same time because of storage issues. I really like the s3, and if you can get a good deal on it, you might as well. My gf still has the evo, and she's now eyeing my s3. If you want to wait for the s4, you might as well wait for the s5 or s6, or whatever... My philosophy with tech has always been, what will benefit me the most now, because if you always have in the back of your head that you plan to upgrade, you never will. Do it now, or do it never lol
I'm currently leaning toward the upgrade, but I may have just been dealt a blow. I checked with Amazon and they said I'm not eligible for the $50 price because I'm a current customer (despite that I'm up for a two year contract extension). Does anyone else have any experience with this? Is this true?

That's what I figured as well. I haven't really found any information on the internet about people upgrading after a 2-year contract either. Has anyone successfully done so through Amazon or any other retailer? Perhaps I was mistaken when I thought the discounted price applied to me?
Also, will it matter that I am on a SERO plan? Don't want to lose that guy!

Easy call, if you see an outstanding deal on the S3 ($50 or under) then snag one. If a deal doesn't come your way then hold off. I'm on the SGS3 right now and it is a pretty amazing device. I was able to get it for $50 through Sprint on the Black Friday stuff, my wife's SGS3 on the other hand we shelled out $250 for, and we just wish we had waited the extra couple of months *Grin*.. Of course if you are like some and Money isn't an issue Get Both !

I also had the original Evo 4G for two years wating on the SIII to come out.
At this point, you might as well wait for the SIV to use your upgrade option. Shop around for deals on SIII online and you might just be able to snag both phones.
It is an amazing phone though. I can say with confidence that i'll keep it until I get a good deal on a SIV, after the first few months after the launch date.
Well after talking with Sprint Employee Account (I'm on a SERO-P plan), they offered me $75 off my bill for the next two months to effectively make the S3 $50. I went ahead and took the plunge! I should have the phone tomorrow.

I'm currently leaning toward the upgrade, but I may have just been dealt a blow. I checked with Amazon and they said I'm not eligible for the $50 price because I'm a current customer (despite that I'm up for a two year contract extension). Does anyone else have any experience with this? Is this true?

I think you made the right choice! You will be really happy with this phone. I rooted mine the first day I had it
I will not buy it because its size.. Im comfortable with my S2

Just get the s3. Still a strong selling phone. Stay away from HTC. They tend to stop updates to there phones after they have been out for a short time. I don't think the note3 will be out anytime soon since the note2 just came out. S4 won't be out until sometime next year probably.

I decided to go ahead and take the plunge for the S3. I was eligible for the early upgrade and I had the Buy Back program from Best Buy. If I waited for the "next" phone I would have lost the Buy Back. Turned out the S3 was $99 and the Buy Back gave me $130 on my old Epic 4G, so I made out pretty well. Got the phone and had some left over cash to use on a case.
I bought the AT&T Galaxy Note 2 a few times before returning to my iPhone 5. I have grown to hate my iPhone 5. The only thing I love it about are the cases I have. It has AppleCare+ on it which I really like but that's not cutting it. The phone has a very loose power button which causes a rattle. My iPhone 5 has also had dust in the camera lens since day one. Call me OCD but I've actually gone through about 5 iPhone 5's since sticking with this one. Apple QC is absolutely atrocious. I've had my issues with Samsung phones but not like Apple.
I absolutely hate the screen on the iPhone 5. I hate it!!! I don't think I can wait until the Galaxy S4. I want to be back on the Android ecosystem so that way I will have an easy transition to the S4. I also loved the S Pen, as I've had the Note 2 before. I returned it because I was bothered by the lack of cases and support for it. I always go back to that pathetic iPhone.
So is the Note 2 still worth it in Feb 2013? I don't think any other phone can come close in performance yet?

Not sure if you want to wait a little bit but some signs point to a new Note 3 soon (but if it comes to AT&T, it might be a little bit before it reaches these shores). Otherwise, there have been some really good deals @ Best Buy and such. Or... you know... stick with your iPhone, you sheep LoL
http://au.ibtimes.com/articles/429737/20130131/samsung-galaxy-note-3-release-date-launch.htm
I feel that you'll be fine because I don't think the s4 could replace your Note 2. The only reason why I say this is because of that extra half inch that the note would provide. For sure the s4 will be a lot quicker than the note 2 but was the note 2 ever slow to begin with. I also feel the same way with my i phone 5. I went from iPhone 5 on Sprint to s3 on ATT then the iPhone 5 on ATT then I am using the Note 2 on ATT now. I feel that since in previously years I've been using strictly Apple on my devices switching to the s3 and note 2 is real "innovation."
I also feel the same about the lack of any real nice cases for the note compared to the iPhone.
All in all I think you'll be fine if you decide to pickup another note.

Both are $199 (2 year agreement) with a $50 gift card from Best Buy... with the $50 gift card, that's the best deal out at this moment (changes every week everywhere)
Edit: But of course, if you're buying outright, shop around... Amazon has some pretty decent prices

It would be outright. Can't seem to find the AT&T version outright anywhere but AT&T. The N1700 is fine but I have full AT&T LTE here.

You can basically get the phone at any retail shop outright but they never go on "sale" outright. Check the websites, click on the phones, then select the "no contract" option and it will show you the full price (e.g. Best Buy... btw not trying to push them it's just that I was doing the same thing you are a few days ago for another phone... has the Note 2 AT&T for $799.99 and the iPhone 5 outright for $699.99 16gb on both). As for the international version, I'm not too sure how this will work out with that retarded bill that passed about unlocks and whatnots.

AT&T has the best price. $649.99. Best Buy I wanna say is $799? :0
I buy phones outright all the time so I'm pretty familiar with it. I just can't find anything cheaper than $649 anywhere.
No way the Note 3 is due this Spring. The Note series is typically released late Summer / early Fall. I expect the Note III in Aug / Sept.
Now the Galaxy S phones are released in late Spring mostly. The S IV is rumored for a April worldwide release. And May U.S. release.
I would get the Note 2 right now, best phone ever. And the S-pen rocks. Amazing battery life, super fast smooth.
Or if you gonna wait, wait for the Note 3 = better upgraded version of the S4, bigger screen + S-pen.

Yeah that's insane! AT&T is the way to go... damn I should look there (I for no reason at all assumed they'd be the priciest)
If you live in a fairly big city you should look on Craigslist for yours. I was so ready to pay ATTs price of 649.99 but then someone on Craigslist sold me a brand new one for 500.... Honestly I couldn't be happier with this phone, love it.

I don't trust craigslist phones myself and like the option of maybe returning it if i need to. I would go to att and t and buy from them. It is the cheapest price around that I found. I checked best buy and Amazon. Best buy was ridiculous. I ened up buying outright from at and t..not happy about the $710 but such is life. Resale on the Iphone will be way better for a longer period of time.

Let me get this straight. You went back to an inferior product (iPhone5) because of the lack of cases. What are you, a 12 year old girl?
Yes the Note2 holds up very well, in fact I think it will be topic spec even next year.

The $50 offer is with doing an upgrade through best buy mobile. Nothing to do with the actual price of the phone. **** you could upgrade to a free phone and get a $50 gift card. And is that really your determining factor for whether we'd stay in business or not. Lol not that I care much because I'm almost done my degree but BBY is gonna be around for a while. Even if it doesn't get your support. Still the number one electronics retailer in the world. That just isn't a super strong statement right now.

Nono... Just a strong observation from a former employee of many years who has seen bad decision after bad decision over the last decade and got off the boat before it tries to turn itself into radio shack when they themselves are failing. There wasn't much money in the bank when I left and looking at the last 2 quarters, it dwindles down even further as the stock that used to be around 40 went down to 15 (almost to 10 last week) in a very short amount of time. Guess who went through the same thing? CompUSA and Circuit City and what you get left is either a buyout which would shrink the company to make a profit it would need to stay viable, or bought out to be Amazon's showroom for a fee instead of free like it is now. The more BBY/BBYM price matches, the more profit margin is lost so that money has to come from their bank to break even. Keep on this track and it will go off a cliff. Don't get me wrong, I want BBY to survive and all but becoming Radio Shack is not the way to go.
Congrats on your degree! You can now watch from the outside instead of in objectively.

I just went to T-Mobile's trade in program to see what I would get for my GS3. The T999 fetches a pretty penny - 225 bucks. On top of that, the "new" T999L only gets 190 and the Galaxy Note 2 gets 265. A 64GB iPhone 5 is 269.99 for comparison.
Looks like T-Mobile wants to buy back as many T999s as possible, probably anticipating an uptick in exchanges on the heels of the LTE model launching.
Interestingly enough, this is much better than their father's day trade-in deal for the iPhone since it applies to any phone. Something I'm thinking about but I don't have the cash to pay the down payment up front and I'm pretty sure you still have to pay up front if you go to the store as well (although I'm not sure, I haven't called).
Just thought I would post this since this is even more than what HTC was offering on their competitor trade-up offer!

You have to have the down payment as the trade in credit can take weeks to be processed. I was offered 225 as well. But I ended up selling mine while it was still hot for enough to out down for a note 2 for the wife and n4 for me. Got tired of the Samsung game.

Yeah that was my idea too. Seems kind of silly they can't just do a quick in-store inspection and give you your credit. All they have to do is power it up, make sure its not rooted, plug it into a USB charger, and check for damage. Wouldn't take more than 5 minutes total and would dramatically increase sales for T-Mobile if everyone knew they could trade in their phone - T-Mobile still makes a profit, gets new customers and upgrades old ones, and the best part is that it moves them closer to having everyone on LTE so HSPA can be phased out sooner or left for customers that don't care about their network speed.

That's all I saw of your post.
Just looked on eBay at recently sold phones... Average seems to be around 250 but mine is in MINT condition - hell one with a cracked screen sold for 250... The Titanium Grey is selling higher than the others (probably because its the rarest filtering by listing) which is what I happen to have. Prices are all over the place on Craigslist.
I've had eBay for years but never sold anything on there. Too bad my PayPal account got frozen or I'd consider it.
Still wish T-Mobile would just inspect it in the store though, much less of a hassle. lol. I suppose I can call them and see if they can just bill the phone to the account - we've had them for forever.

If I had a regular SIM card I would just use my Samsung Captivate for a little bit while I sold my SGS3 (its really not a bad phone, hell LiquidSmooth 2.6 is even out for that old thing and I'm in a refarmed market to boot so I wouldn't lose 3G) but I don't so yeah.
It doesn't surprise me that people aren't biting on Craigslist. Although here in Denver that's how most people buy and sell things online, hardly anyone I know uses eBay for anything other than super rare stuff so who knows.
I think I'll have to talk to my roommate about billing it to the account if T-Mobile will let us... I don't know though, my S3 still does everything I need it to and I don't have any real issues with it, I just want something new. LMAO.

If you have an older sim for your other phone you should be able to reactivate it. I've done it online before, or you can call or go to a store and they can do it for you.

They wouldn't give you 225 at T-Mobile but I saw one on eBay sell for 245... I would go to eBay and filter until you get your device and then select show sold only and see what they're selling for. Might surprise you.

Any ways T-Mobile dropped that GS4 to $99 who cant afford $99? trade in your phone with tmobile and use it as credit to pay for the phone faster. I seen a lot of post of people saying that the s4 is not a big upgrade from the s3.. I played with one today at the store.. First time I played with an actual live show device. And I put my s3 next to it.. There is a huge different between these 2. If you see them side by side in person.. Now in pictures not so much

People on extremely fixed incomes can't afford 99 dollars. I'm fighting disability right now so I get 175 a month from the state of Colorado while I go through the long process with Social Security.
Oh and I fixed my PayPal account... I can't believe all I had to do was call and verify some information with them. If I had known that I would have done that back in October! So now I might just sell my GS3 and get an S4 or One. Torn between the two - don't like non-expandable storage but the One being able to run any ROM from at&t, T-Mo OR International is a HUGE plus to me.

That GS4 is able to run any rom from any carrier in the states and even the international! Go to any carrier s4 forum and you will see... One of the reason I would trade my s3 for the s4 in a heart bit because of it.... And you know samsung is faster than htc in updating phones.. Okay well you just made my decision a ton easier, especially if the 99 down price point is T-Mobile's now standard pricing for the S4. I couldn't really see any other reason to get the One (I really like having an SD card and "Boom Sound" is nice but I found myself covering up the speakers anyway holding the phone in landscape) and with the 7500mAh Zero Lemon battery out for the S4, its kind of a no-brainer especially since it fixes the design flaw with the speaker on the S4 and shoots the sound out the sides.
I wasn't aware that you could flash any carrier ROM to the S4. Apparently that was just in the beginning of the launch then? Sweet!

Sweet!

Yeah people with the s4 are flashing international roms like crazy out of the box... But remember dont flash a rom with the modem witch now days none comes with a modem hehehe.. I played with one today and I really liked it.. I think I may get it and not wait for the note 3.. Really I like the note 2 and that 5'5 screen is big enough.. I Kinda think about it if i want a note 2 but rumors says the that note 3 will be 6'' screen.. I really dont think I will like it that much..
As we on the S3 we can port any carrier rom to ours but not international.. And look how long they been having 4.2.x roms. and we dont have a leak yet.. Flashing roms from international like on the s4 is priceless lol.. I really dont know why XDA had to split these forums.. And not make one. Like on the HTC Sensation.. It was one forum for all Sensations worldwide.
Not to mention that Samsung is MUCH more dev friendly than HTC. Since the One series it just seemed to me that HTC was trying to become too much like the icrap. Plus No expandable storage, no removable battery, locked bootloaders, etc.... any one of these is a deal killer in my book.
