I want to have a rooted stock Android Nexus 5X with stock recovery. I also want to keep my boot loader locked. But I've read that automatic OTA updates don't work on a rooted phone. Then I found out about FlashFire.
But I also read that FlashFire doesn't allow flashing of the radio and boot loader. Chainfire himself said "FlashFire can flash both bootloaders and modems on most Nexus devices. However, I would only flash the modem and not the bootloaders, to be on the safe side. Or, use the full size OTAs available from Google rather than the Fastboot package, and circumvent the issue (those flash both bootloader and modem if necessary, with less risk when doing the bootloaders)."
So I've got 2 questions:
1. Is it possible to flash everything, including the radio and boot loader on the 5X?
2. If the boot loader is flashable, what are the potential drawbacks of flashing it with Flashfire instead of fastboot?
Thanks

Hello Everyone,
I am enjoying my Galaxy Nexus very much, but I am a little confused about doing a backup. I am currently unlocked bootloader but have un-rooted in preparations for the Verizon OTA. My question is....what is the best way to do a full back up non rooted. I currently have the full version of My Backup Pro, but that doesn't seem to backup the data portion of an app....just the app. I have used Wugs toolkit to do a backup, but I was wondering what is the easiest/best way.
I am confused I think due to the lack of an actual SD card. I cam from a Droid X and had it rooted and used Titanium Backup and My Backup Pro with no issues. Thanks for any help!!!!!
If you want to do a complete backup you can flash CWM in fastboot (using mskip's GNex Toolkit), do a nandroid backup, then flash back to stock recovery. Only requires unlocked bootloader.
Rooting has NO IMPACT WHATSOEVER on your ability to receive and install the OTA update.

efrant is correct, you will still be notified of the official OTA even if you have your bootloader unlocked and you are rooted. Once you download and install the OTA, then you will lose root.
Thanks for the responses. From my understanding though, if you used CWM to do your root (Wug's Toolkit) you would not be able to see/get the OTA. Is this correct? What method are you using to root your Nexus?
Again thanks for the help!!!! Another thing that is messing me up is the Google/Samsung/Verizon versions of the OTA. I have "mysid" so do I need to wait for the OTA or can I flash one of the 4.04s that are around. I am still learning about the difference of GSM vs CDMA and I really don't want to create issues with my Nexus!!!!

Why install clockworkmod?
You can install clockwork by doing (in the assumption you renamed the clockwork recovery img to cwm.img):
"Fastboot flash recovery cwm.img" okay...
But you can also run cwm without installing it to the system by doing:
"Fastboot boot cwm.img"
When you reboot the system afterward your phone will erase the one-time run and refer back to it's old ways again.
No manufacturer will know what you did and you don't run the risk of flashing a conflicting stock recovery back. Plus the fact that your nandroid backup will flash the right recovery to when you ever need to put a backup back after a crash.

OK to get a few things right here, you need to have stock recovery to install OTA, no it won't relock boot loader, yes it will erase CWM. Your rom needs to be 100% stock (including boot loader, kernel and radio aswell as rom and recovery).
The way I just went to 4.1.1 (takju) I was running the preview JB Google IO rom anyway so in CWM I reflashed that to undo any system changes I made. Then using Mskips nexus tool kit I used it to flash stock recovery and then BOOT (NOT FLASH) to CWM. Find the update and flash it. Before you do all this use titanium to back up your stuff, do a nandroid and get voodoo OTA root keeper so you get root back after the update.
Then using the tool kit again I used it to flash CWM back. Then your done. I won't give further instructions but for further reading efrant has very good posts about this stuff, mskip has very good instructions on his tool kit in the thread

i'm still a little confused. my phone is completely stock. it's a takju 4.0.4. i don't want to wait for the OTA for jb 4.1.1. i was going to use the nexus tool kit to unlock the bootloader ( i believe that's required to boot it into cwm) then run the OTA update that people posted for my version to update it. I don't care about keeping cwm or bootloader, just want the update now and keep the phone still stock. i also want to make sure that i'll get OTA updates in the future. It looks like I can just boot it into cwm without flashing it, so that's what i'm going to do.

Yeah you can but you need to unlock the boot loader to do it, which wipes your entire phone so back up any thing you want to keep like photos or music. When the bootloader is open you can just leave it and just lock it if you need to send for warranty. Or if you already have root but locked boot loader there is a free app to unlock it on play store

once, i update the file using the nexus toolkit to boot into custom recovery, once it updates, it will lock the bootloader and the phone will be back to stock right? or is the bootloader going to stay open.
also, will i still get future OTA updates if i just do the update by booting into recovery and not flashing cwm?

Once you unlock it the bootloader stays open until you choose lock I again. You can still get ota but remember you need the matching bootloader, kernel, radio and unmodified system and recovery. So just booting cwm is fine to apply and then after its applied the patch you can flash what ever you want again. I find its always a good idea to make a back up of a 100% stock rom and keep it on the pc just in case. This is all simple and quick with the tool kit

Hey, first, thanks for the replies. Second, if I unlock the bootloader to install update, make no other changes, meaning everything else is stock and the update is googles stock update, them once the update is done, can I run the toolkit again to lock the bootloader. Doing this will it bring my phone to same everything as a stock ota updated one? Or is me unlocking and then locking bootloader going to cause me to have a different version for the next ota

No worries its fine. Yes after you have successfully applied a stock OTA patch onto a stock rom then you are running the same as everyone. Their are minor regional differences, like takju and yakuto (what ever lol) toro, toro plus etc but flashing a ota patch from a different build won't work on a rom that doesn't match.
You can go to the Google developer site and search for the full ROM and you know definitely its 100% as its meant to be, the patches just write over the bits which change in updates. The thing to bear in MIMD about flashing the whole ROM from Google site is that it will wipe your entire phone
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images (keep looking through for the build you want and you can flash it using the flash tool. Back up your stuff like music photos etc first)

I have rooted my Nexus 7 wifi 2012 tablet with TWRP
I don't want to keep un-rooting, applying ota updates then re-rooting my tablet. Is there an easy way. Maybe modified images i can use on a rooted tablet which i can install via the install option in twrp recovery loader.
I also notice that Nexus root tool kit has a ota sideload update option in the advanced menue.
So my question is where are the modifies ota update files if they exist as I don't want to keep un-rooting, rerooting each time to apply official ota updates. I have searched the net and can't find modifies ota updates?
My OTA failed due to root and modifications so I extracted system.img and boot.img from the 5.1 tarball and flashed them using Nexus Root Toolkit. Works well.
I'm going through the same issue - I want to keep running stock, but every time an OTA update comes in, it bugs me for an update until I go through the whole process of finding the files elsewhere, using the Toolkit to flash them etc etc.
Is there a better way to do this automatically? Can I find the downloaded OTA package on the Nexus and just flash it from there?
Since Lollipop, you can't take an OTA in any way (official or sideload) if you've modified your system. Rooting, custom recovery or kernel. Unrooting does not help since the system already has been modified.
Easiest way to upgrade and still keep your data is to flash the factory image but leave out userdata.img. This can be easily done through NRT (No wipe mode) if command prompt is scary. Yes you'll have to reroot... But hey, this is a Nexus, it's easy.
I assume that means waiting for someone to post the update?
If you want to wait for someone to make a prerooted image, then yes. Otherwise just download the official factory image (Google it) and go for it.
Google doesn't always release OTAs and factory images at the same time, so some waiting will probably always be involved...
Drives me crazy. TWRP used to be able to intercept a OTA flash, flash the needed images, detect you lost root and ask to restore root.
Somewhere that disappeared.
I just flashed a very old stock and took every OTA to 5.0.2, rooted, setup... now getting bombarded with 5.1.1 update notification. Ugh

I need to flash the latest lollipop image to my rooted nexus with TWRP. I know where to find the images but don't remember how to flash it. What exactly are the steps and how do I leave out userdata.img ?
And what are the steps to reroot lollipop?
Thanks
i keep getting the offer to download the 5.1 update but when i do it dloads it then tries to reboot into recovery to flash it but it obviously boots into TWRP recovery which is no good.
So the question is when it dloads the update where does it dload to?
and could i flash it from TWRP if i find it?
I'm on a Verizon Note 4 (N910V). Bootloader unlocked, rooted, and TWRP installed. It is on the stable version of hsbadr's Unofficial CM13 6.0.1. The bootloader version is CPD1. Flashfire has special instructions for Samsung devices with protected partitions. There is no data on the phone that I care about. I just want to keep root, TWRP and the unlocked bootloader. I assume that I uncheck "boot" and "Recovery", but I'm interested what people have done with the protected partitions. Chainfire recommends a technique for flashing some thru ODIN after flashing the System on Flashfire. Any suggestion are needed and very welcome.
I'm rooted with frp unlocked and so on with oreo. I need to go all the way back to out of the box stock setup to download the latest updates. I'm on oreo and have a ton of reading but I need to be guided into a set of instructions to get this restore done.
Please help.
Thx!
Via magisk uninstaller, uninstall and your boot will be fine
Also, you can flash stock boot and recovery to be on full stock
Will this allow me to relock and do ota updates? Basically I need to be able to use the factory recovery partition incase of failure. Currently due to the unlocked phone the use of the recovery bricks the phone. And where can I get these stock recovery partitions at?
Doesn't matter if your BL is locked or unlocked. As long as you have stock recovery and stock boot, you will be able to install OTA
Can you e plain a bit more detail? Thx! How the process should go
What are the commands for stock boot and recovery images through the recovery screen. The white screen that shows bootloader and frp status.... And possible link to those specific files would be great.
Erecovery? How to reflash?
