Back Up Non Root - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello Everyone,
I am enjoying my Galaxy Nexus very much, but I am a little confused about doing a backup. I am currently unlocked bootloader but have un-rooted in preparations for the Verizon OTA. My question is....what is the best way to do a full back up non rooted. I currently have the full version of My Backup Pro, but that doesn't seem to backup the data portion of an app....just the app. I have used Wugs toolkit to do a backup, but I was wondering what is the easiest/best way.
I am confused I think due to the lack of an actual SD card. I cam from a Droid X and had it rooted and used Titanium Backup and My Backup Pro with no issues. Thanks for any help!!!!!

If you want to do a complete backup you can flash CWM in fastboot (using mskip's GNex Toolkit), do a nandroid backup, then flash back to stock recovery. Only requires unlocked bootloader.

Rooting has NO IMPACT WHATSOEVER on your ability to receive and install the OTA update.

efrant is correct, you will still be notified of the official OTA even if you have your bootloader unlocked and you are rooted. Once you download and install the OTA, then you will lose root.

Thanks for the responses. From my understanding though, if you used CWM to do your root (Wug's Toolkit) you would not be able to see/get the OTA. Is this correct? What method are you using to root your Nexus?
Again thanks for the help!!!! Another thing that is messing me up is the Google/Samsung/Verizon versions of the OTA. I have "mysid" so do I need to wait for the OTA or can I flash one of the 4.04s that are around. I am still learning about the difference of GSM vs CDMA and I really don't want to create issues with my Nexus!!!!

Why install clockworkmod?
You can install clockwork by doing (in the assumption you renamed the clockwork recovery img to cwm.img):
"Fastboot flash recovery cwm.img" okay...
But you can also run cwm without installing it to the system by doing:
"Fastboot boot cwm.img"
When you reboot the system afterward your phone will erase the one-time run and refer back to it's old ways again.
No manufacturer will know what you did and you don't run the risk of flashing a conflicting stock recovery back. Plus the fact that your nandroid backup will flash the right recovery to when you ever need to put a backup back after a crash.

will this setup work?

I have a noob question:
I unlocked my bootloader and rooted my gsm nexus. However I would like to be able to receive and install any updates OTA- basically stay as stock as possible with root. My plan was to leave the stock recovery in place. If I need to do a backup or reflash su.zip (after an update to regain root) I was planning on running rom manager and using it to flash CWM. I realize that this CWM would not survive a reboot as the startup script will reflash the stock recovery.
Will this work and does it make sense?
thanks
quick bump- basically I want to know what will prevent an OTA update from installing
Edit I realized there was a flaw in my logic. After an OTA update I will lose root and then be unable to flash the recovery via rom manager. I guess will have to resort to fastboot after OTA

[Q] How to install official OTA update on a rooted 1X?

I have a rooted 1X (Indian version, not the AT&T or any other custom version) with Clockwork mod recovery. A couple of days ago, the software update informed me I have a 31 MB update ready to install. When it reboots, it goes into CWM mode, and despite disabling signature check/script verification, CWM cannot apply the official update.
Is there a way to go into the normal download mode for HTC, or do I need to flash the stock kernel or something? (And where do I get the stock kernel if so?)
You need to make sure you haven't flashed any system mods or deleted any system apps, then flash stock recovery and relock your bootloader. If you have made system changes flash a nandroid backup from before you did.
Hope that helps

What's stock recovery..the regular download mode? And is relocking the bootloader compulsory when installing an update on an HTC device?
You really should know what you're doing before rooting - do you even have the RUU in case you need to go back to stock? If not, you have no one else to blame but yourself...
Anyway - the stock recovery is the one you over-wrote with CWM so you need to get the one you had originally and flash it back. I don't think you have to relock the bootloader but you may have to
Stock recovery is what was on your phone when you bought it, if you do a search on here you should be able to find the recovery needed.
Some people say you have to relock while some say you don't, I don't know my self as I always update with a ruu. Try it with just stock recovery and if it doesn't work try relocking your bootloader then

Worried to update to JB 4.1 from rooted 4.0.4

I bought the Galaxy Nexus a week ago and I updated it to 4.0.4. I also used the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit found on this forum to perform the 1-click install too unlock the bootaloder and root the phone.
Today I got the message of the new 4.1 update and phone downloaded it. Now I am worried to restart the phone and update since I heard that I could brick the phone because I could have another recovery. I don't know if I have another recovery and for sure I know that I haven't touched any system file or kernel.
What I would like to have is the new JB 4.1 on my phone without wipe anything and have all the benefits of the "1-click install".
As you have noticed I am still noob on this root things.
Thanks in advance for your reply.
Just flash one of the many jb roms available on this forum and voila you will be on jelly bean. Make sure you backup and do a full wipe cause it's a new base. You don't need the ota unless you are planning on unrooting your phone.

Where can I find the JB rom? You said I should wipe the configs but I don't want to reconfigure again the phone, but apparently I am understanding that this is the only way?
So I should turn off the phone without restarting it. Open the recovery (How can I do this?), do the 3 wipes (data, cache and dalvik) and then install the rom by putting the .zip on the internal memory of the phone?
Should I put the .zip rom now that the phone is on?
Sorry but I repeat that I am very noob.
Thanks in advance.

The update will not install if you have a different recovery, you have to flash back the stock recovery and then update to use OTA. After this you'll have to root your phone again.
OR you could flash a pre-rooted rom like eqjunkie829 proposed.
Edit: To keep the stuff you have on the phone flash stock recovery do an OTA update and re-root. If you don't plan on flashing stuff and only want root there is really no need to flash a custom recovery.

As I said I did the "1-click for all" option on the Galaxy nexus toolkit. This means that I have another recovery and I cannot install the update.
So the first option is gone.
At this point, if I want to perform the last option, I should turn off the phone, connect the phone in the fastboot mode and use th galaxy nexus toolkit to reinstall the stock recovery. Then I turn on the phone and the update will install. After this I have to re-eneter the phone in the fastboot mode and root the phone always with the galaxy nexus toolkit.
Am I right?

Wugfresh newbie help

I have the Samsung galaxy Nexus that just received the ota from Verizon with build JRO03O.
After the update I used the Wugfresh toolkit to unlock and root for the first time.
I selected other device as the build I have was not there.
I didn't install a custom recovery because I don't want to lose the ability for future ota updates
1) how do I create a backup without wugfresh? When I try to select this in wugfresh, it tells me that I must select a build which is not there.
I did buy titanium backup but can't figure out how to create a Nandroid.
2) if I install clockworkmod via ROM MANAGER APP, will I be able to revert back to the regular recovery in the future when a new update comes out? I would like to try different roms
That's it for now, thanks for any help

[GUIDE] Full Phone Backup without Unlock or Root
TB backs up apps & data, it does not create a nandroid.
If you want to try custom ROMs you will need to flash a custom recovery. I would stay away from toolkits & learn to flash from fastboot & use adb, you'll be better served in the long run. To return to stock you can check out this thread

[Q] Rooting the One X

Hi, i hope i am in the right place, sorry if not.
I want to root my One X on stock ROM. I currently have 4.1.1, CID HTC_001.
Is it possible to get it rooted while keeping certain things? These things are:
Being able to receive OTA
Keeping all files when rooting
Easy to revert back if i am not able to receive OTA.
Help will be very much appreciated thanks
If you unlock the bootloader with htcdev.com and flash a cwm custom recovery you can make a nandroid backup of the current non rooted rom and keep it in a safe place. You can restore that backup anytime if you want to go back stock.
After that you are able to flash custom roms or just root the one you are running currently ......
You might void some warranty with blocking the bootloader !!!
Tip : ALWAYS DO A NANDROID BACKUP FROM THE STOCK ROM !!!
Thank you

Thanks a lot. Just what i was looking for. I will certainly be doing this at some point. Shame you can't just root it but at least you are able to back it all up safely.
When following any guides
Don't flash the recovery. Just use fastboot boot recovery.img
Instead of fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
This way will leave the stock recovery on your device which is needed to apply any otaupdates

Yes with the taken nandroid you can go back anytime....the only thing you have to remember is that when you took a nandroid backup the recovery of that backup is not stock, so after the restore you have to flash back the stock recovery before you can apply a official HTC update. But you can find that easily.....i have them also
That's great. OTA was something i really wanted, thanks. 4.2 is coming very soon and a possibility of 5. Just one more thing. Do you lose items on the virtual SD or does this not affect them at all?
Well do a full backup of the sd before you unlock the bootloader, it's sets the phone to its factory state and some say it wiped the sd but others say it didn't so that's a grey area for me !
Its probably the safest option, i will do that. Is using the stock recovery just as easy as using the custom recovery too? I read stock recovery and this insecure boot thing and it has a chance of bricking. Also i know a lot of articles are with 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 and 4.1 are different. I think 4.1 is the same as 4.0.4 though.
Well to be honest i'm not a big fan of rooting the stock rom ! I always flash a custom already rooted rom to have benefits of all the hard work that developers has.put into a rom. In my opinion a custom rom is always better than a stock rooted rom. So i don't much about the insecure root things !
What i do is : flash the custom recovery and backup the stock rom (keep that in a vault ) and flash a custom rom to play with !
Stock recovery has no use at all for me, i only need it when i want to update the phone with official HTC releases .....like they did to update to JB
ow and yes rooting and flashing on JB 4.1 are the same as on ICS 4.04
Is it easy enough to go back to the stock recovery though if you have used the Clockwork one?
Yes it will take 3 fastboot commands while the phone is in fastboot USB menu
Fastboot erase cache
Fastboot flash recovery nameofrecovery.img
Fastboot erase cache
And the stock recovery is restored !
That's all !
Ofcourse the nandroid has to be restored before that.....you copy the nandroid backup to the phone and flash the boot.img from that nandroid (its inside the nandroid folder) after that you do a full wipe in the custom recovery and restore the nandroid, then you boot it up to see if it runs and after that you flash the stock kernel ! Easy and simple.......and you don't have to re-lock and unlock the bootloader anymore, it can stay unlocked the whole process
That doesn't sound too bad... Thank you very much for the help, i will certainly be having a go. Sorry for some of the stupid questions, i am quite new to all this. Bricking is the only worry for me, if i can avoid that, i'm happy . Thanks again.
No problem mate ! I was already helping somebody else tonight.....multitasking it is !
Hahaha. Well i won't be starting until i can get my hands on another laptop as my current is in a poor state. Damaged hard drive. can run very slow at times. I tried transferring SD to memory stick. But it was running at a painful speed so i stopped it Tomorrow i should be able to get another one to backup my things onto.
