I'm having a hard time finding a tutorial to unlock the root the GNex, Verizon version.
Everything I seem to search for leads me back to the toolkit which I rather not use, so if someone can point me towards another way to unlock the boot loader, root, and flash recovery, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks.

Adb reboot bootloader
Fastboot OEM unlock
This factory resets once done
Adb reboot bootloader
Fastboot flash recovery name of recovery.img
Boot into recovery flash custom rom or su.zip

Try http://droidmodderx.com/galaxynexus/manually-unlock-and-root-the-galaxy-nexus-requires-adb.
All you really need to do is make sure you have all the proper pre-rooting tools. Then you boot into boot loader, type in "fastboot oem unlock" then follow some on screen instructions. Then you flash a temporary recovery, flash superuser or su.zip from that recovery, then delete a file to make it permanent recovery and you're set to flash roms/kernels/etc. Su.zip should be super easy to find too.

Agh UBER beat me to it.
Uh...stickied above.
Or linked in my sig.
This is the manual way to do it, as requested.

Yup but OEM unlock cleans the phone completely data and all so backup. Also take a look at the sticky the other person said for actual links and files.

Is the file that I can't remember the name of not in /system anymore where you have to delete it in order to maintain your first recovery that you flashed (otherwise it'll bring it back to original recovery)? In other words, there's no such thing as a temporary recovery for the GNex?
If I download a ROM using my phone, then using file explorer I copy and paste the zip from my downloads to the root of my phone, wouldnt I be able to go into twrp and flash it? It doesn't make since that the files would be any different if I did it this way as opposed to using a USB cable, but maybe there's something I'm not understanding? Has anyone tried this?
Yes you don't even have to move to root just navigate there in twrp

So I didn't come up with this? Lol I was all proud of myself cause I thought I came up with something useful :/ still seems too good to be true
Lol, no you haven't really made any special discovery. I often download ROMs using my phone to my SD card and install them on my friend's phones. Your computer has literally no part in the flashing process, you're just transferring a file like any other.
Not new to flashing, but I made a huuuuuuuuge mistake today. I accidently flashed the wrong recovery image for the 2012 N7 while trying to unlock and root (yeah, I'm an idiot). Now it gets stuck on the N7 bootup logo.
I can boot into fastboot and recovery mode, but it fails to mount the sd card so I can't do **** anymore. Can't even get it back to stock t this point Any suggestions? I'm on a mac, but have access to PC. Have tried both CWM and TWRP. TWRP just gives me the password screen and 0mb storage. Can't figure out how to get around it or get my storage mounted. CWM won't mount the sdcard either. Trying to adb, but no stock image yet...
Anyone got any ideas?
You need to restore recovery.IMG from someone else's Nexus 7 (flash via fastboot). I did the exact same thing. Look in the root your nexus thread...about 5 pages in. Dude posted it for me.

Well, when I use the command "adb devices" the tablet doesn't even show up. But I can use the Nexus 7 root toolkit for the first gen to flash different recoveries by renaming them, so I don't know what the heck is going on...
Good news: You didn't brick your N7. I'm assuming your boot loader is unlocked. So:
Flash TWRP 2.6.0.0 for the NEW N7
Use this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=44007919 To fix the 0MB issue.
Now, if you haven't wiped System, you should be able to wipe data and then reboot.
If you did wipe System, find that System.img floating around and flash that.
And always, good luck!

Get this one: MDB08I - 6.0.0: https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/bullhead-mdb08i-factory-64536fcf.tgz , unpack it fully down to the folder that has the image files in it and that can be anywhere (let's say \temp for now).
Notice that there is a batch file that can do a full flash of the OS that you'll have unpacked from the .tgz file. You'll use that once in Fastboot to flash it. Don't worry about having TWRP or a special bootloader before you do any of this. Just get into fastboot (like "adb reboot bootloader" or hold down up&down&power buttons for awhile until in fastboot). Once in flashboot:
Flash MDB08I, boot things up, set things up, make sure it seems "normal" and check the "about phone" settings, and then you should be set to do what you want with the modified image & TWRP, etc.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong but when I try to flash I get an error "fastboot is not recognized...blah."
Sent from my Nexus 5X using XDA Free mobile app
I confirmed fastboot and adb are working correctly so not sure what I'm doing wrong. Just opening the batch file opens command window correct? I don't have to do anything else?
Sent from my Nexus 5X using XDA Free mobile app
You need to put the extracted files from the download "flash-all.sh, flash-all.bat, flash-base.sh bootloader-bullhead-bhz10i.img, image-bullhead-mdb08i.zip, radio-bullhead-m8994f-2.6.28.0.065.img" in the same folder as platfrom-tools. From there you run the flash-all.bat in the command prompt. just did it today.

If you are getting confused you can always use the Unified Android Toolkit to download/flash the MDB08I image automatically. It will guide you through decrypting and rooting it too.
If you want to learn and do it all manually then good luck

You say that you "confirmed fastboot and adb are working correctly", but that doesn't sound right since your prior post said that "fastboot not recognized". Everyone else that's posted is on the right track and you need to be certain that fastboot (and adb for that matter) are in the correct path or they won't run or be recognized. It's not automatic. You need to either modify %PATH% var in windows, but that's semi-complex, or take the easy road, and move a copy of fastboot & adb to the same folder your image files (.img) are in. Also be certain to move the 'flash-all.bat' file(s) to the same place.
Change your directory to be where all those files are. Be certain the device is in fastboot mode and then make sure it's all working by doing this (or these) commands:
Code:
c:\{place-where-it's-all-at}: fastboot devices
That command should list some number which is the device number which verifies that fastboot is recognized and that the device is recognized.
you can do the same thing with adb (adb devices, look at the number).
---------------------- If that works.... -----------------
Stay in that folder and do the flash-all.bat (OK, I don't recall the exact name of their everything flash file, but I think it's that). It takes some time, but I've used these instructions to help a couple people through this.
Of course, mskip's way is also fine. Whatever works is good. -- Good luck. You're no where near being bricked and in good shape to get this done.
I thought I wasn't able to do that without flashing the image first. Anyway ibwas able to figure it out. I did try to flash TWRP and root with your tootkit but got a nessage " recovery not recognized" or something to that effect. Any idea?

The way I've talked about flashing the image, you don't need TWRP, or anything before you do it, other than what I said. If someone has now put up a zip version of the image, then yeah, you'd need custom recovery, but you don't need to use a zip image. It's less confusing just to use the native stuff and fastboot.
Is fastboot working or not. Are you sure you are getting the phone into fastboot? Can you get output from a "fastboot devices" command? Also, please give us the exact error messages. Write them down when you see them. It'll help whichever of us is trying to help.
I helped someone with this type of problem over here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63439400&postcount=17 , so maybe reading that will help.
I was able to flash the image over with fastboot so I'm now on the OTA. My question now is with flashing twrp. When it prompts within twrp to allow modifications or keep as read only? That's where I'm stuck now. Thanks for your help.

Good. There's no point in installing TWRP at all unless you allow modifications. Allow them and tell that screen to go away forever. Good luck.
Yeh I figured that but never came across if before with other phones. Would you know if its an excessively long boot time after first flashing it?

Once you get to this point (installing TWRP), it's best to find & follow the best guide (by that I mean that people had the least problems with) verbatim. Then ask questions in that thread:
I took a quick look and this one looks fine: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/general/guide-how-to-install-custom-recovery-t3231143
Another way to to use mskips ways, but ask questions afterward in his thread.
I don't have a 5x (or anything like it) and I only really want to comment on things I've done a number of times before. My only comment about boot "quickly" vs. "booting normally", is that the first time you've done something "traumatic" like unencrypting, or wiping something, then of course it takes longer to do a regular boot. Booting into recovery should always be nearly instant.
Hi guys
Noob here, but with a somewhat decent understanding of flashing and I'm kinda riddled by my current situation.
The current state of my phone is:
Locked bootloader.
Access to TWRP (2.8). Access to MTP and install function within TWRP.
OEM unlocking NOT allowed (since I can't boot into the OS).
So the logical thing to do (and as req'ed in dozens of threads with the same problem) would be to flash a custom ROM via TWRP's Install function, boot into it, enable OEM unlocking, unlock the bootloader and do whatever I want from there.
Except ... that all the ROMs I flash are stuck in bootloop. They go through the flashing process, TWRP shows success and then ... an endless android (or custom) loop when I reboot. I tried flashing PureNexus, Cataclysm and Chroma.
Any idea on what might be going wrong here (I thought of the vendor.img I have on right now being a wrong one, but I have no idea how to flash the good one without access to the vendor partition) ?
Any help would be appreciated, I saw that I could go through the LG flashtool/TOT unbricking method but I don't have i. a PC (I'm on a Mac) or ii. an original Nexus USB cable so that would put me back a few days.
Cheers

Yes, you can in recovery ...
Apparently not. Let me rephrase. You cannot flash a custom ROM with your bootloader locked and your phone work properly.... reflash all stock images through ADB. Take the advice or don't.
How did you get in this sh!tuation? Did you OEM lock with TWRP installed?
Anyway, the TOT method is most likely the only way to get it going again. I wouldn't waste my time doing anything else. Ask a friend/family member to borrow a computer with windows on it.

I'm thankful for any help, sorry if I was dissmisive. I'm not aware of flashing through ADB, just sideloading.
I can flash via fastboot, but can't right now because of my locked bootloader.
Presently I can sideload via ADB in recovery (which amounts to the same as flashing from recovery if I understand correctly ?) but any other flashing/thinkering via fastboot/ADB is verboten because my bootloader is locked.
If you're thinking of something else I'd be glad if you could detail your thinkings and the steps I'd need to make
@chafouin you just reminded me that Google is posting full OTAs. At least for the Android N developer previews. So theoretically you could factory reset from recovery and sideload an OTA. OTAs don't require an unlocked bootloader.

In my experience *on the 5x* locked bootloader doesn't allow you to flash factory images.
I haven't tested with latest bootloader, but that has been he case with past bootloaders.
Other manufacturers and phone models handle things differently.
You can however now flash stock using the FULL OTA provided on the same factory image site. In that case you would use adb sideload, not fastboot.

Have you tried factory reset from TWRP?
If I were you I wouldn't try to flash to stock unless as last resort. Locked bootloader with TWRP installed is better diagnostic situation that locked bootloader with stock recovery installed. If you try to flash to stock it is too easy to overwrite your TWRP with stock recovery (it happens behind the scenes)
That is ok, if you are out of options, but I would exhaust all other options first.
