[Q] new computer-less flash method? - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

If I download a ROM using my phone, then using file explorer I copy and paste the zip from my downloads to the root of my phone, wouldnt I be able to go into twrp and flash it? It doesn't make since that the files would be any different if I did it this way as opposed to using a USB cable, but maybe there's something I'm not understanding? Has anyone tried this?

Yes you don't even have to move to root just navigate there in twrp

So I didn't come up with this? Lol I was all proud of myself cause I thought I came up with something useful :/ still seems too good to be true

Lol, no you haven't really made any special discovery. I often download ROMs using my phone to my SD card and install them on my friend's phones. Your computer has literally no part in the flashing process, you're just transferring a file like any other.

Can't transfer data via USB on CM9 or CM10 on Mac OSX

So I've tried flashing both CM9 and CM10 roms but no matter what I do I can't get it to recognize my sdcard or my internal storage on my Mac. I've even tried formatting the card to fat32 and still nothing. Any ideas what I should do to get this to work? How is it working for you guys? I would post this in the CM threads but I rather not clutter it with questions. Thanks in advance
What do you mean it won't recognize your sdcard? The recovery won't read it? If so, which recovery do you have?

When connected, you should get a notification telling you that your phone is connected via USB.
Select it, and make sure that it's connected as PTP.
MTP does not work on Macs.

Well its readable cause I can still download stuff to it from the web but it just will not mount on my Mac. It'll give me an option on my phone from the notification but android file transfer won't recognize it

Sounds like you should just invest in an external SD card reader. Or look into wireless file transfer even though I don't trust that when it comes to transferring roms... I don't use macs so I'm little help lol.

Thats exactly what I use when Im on FREE GS3 rom, but whenever I switch to a CM9 or CM10 rom it just doesnt mount. Im starting to think maybe its the kernel CM based roms are using
PTP currently does not work on Cm9/10 roms, which is why your having problems it is the main reason keeping me away from using either one as a daily driver for now
Any updates on this? I'm using the latest CM10 nightly - it would sure be nice to be able to connect to my Mac.

Being a Mac user I know the issue you are talking about. I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate on a Boot Camp partition. In finder open Applications-Utilities-Boot Camp. There will be a printable tutorial. The Boot Camp application literally walks you through the process. I have found this method far better than running a V.M.
still no fix?
Hi
Hi,

1. Install Kies.
2. In kies go to tools and use the option to reinstall drivers.
3. Install Android File transfer
4. Reboot mac

Phone NOT BOOTING UP NEED HELP ASAP

So my friend brings me his gsm nexus and is not loading up stays stuck and loading Google screen but does nothing from there..... I asked him what he had done and he said he went into cwm since he was having problems with his phone and decide to format everything on it sdcard/system/ etc etc etc..... I never done something so stupid before lol So I really don't know how to help him...... any way to be able to flash a stock rom maybe via odin ? or stock anything to get the phone to boot up again ? any help is greatly appreciated....... I could boot it up in recovery mode but since sd card is empty I can't restore any roms or any backups since he seem to have deleted them all
well your friend formatted the /system directory so there is no rom on there. of course it wont boot up.
follow this to go back to stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895
DO NOT USE ODIN.
also, tell your friend to leave the phone stock until he knows what he is doing.

yes as Z said that will fix the OP's phone
his 'friend' rooted his own phone and doesnt know how to fix it so he hands it to soemone else that doesnt know how to fix it? you should point your friend to XDA, its a great resource
I guess if you guys wanna say is me doesn't really bother me.... I use xda to flash and stay up to date with the community I am in no way a developer or claim to know what I am doing.... Just trying to help a friend out or like you guys say me.... Just trying to fix a phone I was the one that rooted the phone for him... Just don't see the big deal..... But hey if it makes you guys happy saying it was me that did it I don't mind no big deal just looking for help thats all.....

OP, you might want to uninstall the drivers you currently have for 'android 1.0' in device manager, reboot the computer and then try installing the new drivers.
Or use a tool kit to download a factory rom and flash it.
Edit: can't you mount the sdcard using cwm and copy a rom to the sdcard?

[Q] How to restore Galaxy Nexus without USB

Hi,
Has anyone any idea how to restore my Galaxy Nexus to original without using USB?
I have a Galaxy Nexus Android 4.2.2. The USB doesn't working, however when connected to the power it recharges the battery but turns the phone off.
I can not use USB connection to computer either because the phone switches off immediately.
The phone has been rooted and I can access the root section when the phone turned on and I can upload any file via SMB.
I just need some info on what to do to restore the phone to it's original condition and so remove the info on rooting.
Please don't send me info on any external USB connection because I've tried it all and it does not working.
Thanks

You can use adb over network via developer options.then it is possible to restore stock and lock your phone by using wugs tools from pc.

You don't need access to fastboot if you have root.
Install ROM Manager from the Play Store and use that to install CWM. The just flash the zip in the post i linked to. (Flash a superuser zip right after as well if you want root.)

Worst case, download mobile Odin via play store. If u still have root access then your good. Search for latest gnex stock image(its available to public in its original form made for restore purposes or manual upgrade) keep in mind this wipes everything. While using app ensure ever root is enabled otherwise you'll lose root. The stock image should be in tgz format or something similar. Extract it to your SD card, it will give u a folder. Inside the folder is a bunch of files( possibly a folder within a folder, been a while for me). When using mobile Odin u manually select the boot.IMG system.IMG radio.IMG user data.IMG so if u know the problem u can choose just what u need. Sounds complicated as hell but its really simple. I figured this to be a temporary solution as my laptop had no internet to download need files to restore. Only problem is Mobil Odin isn't free about 4 bucks I think. But well worth the money

Under developer options is option "adb over the network", so if you select this your phone will get ip address and listening port and then you can access it via your computer on that specifics ip/port.

As per usual when changing ROMs, you need to wipe data (in most cases) for your device to boot.

Phone Bricked. Please Help (Formatted /system)

I have the galaxy nexus INTERNATIONAL GSM version.
I formatted the phone and clicked on everything in the format option
format /sd-card
format /system
format /data
format /cache
now phone won't work only now.
wont go beyond "google" screen.
Was on android revolution hd 10 rom.
What to do?
It's not bricked. Try flashing the factory image or sideloading a ROM.
You still should be able to get to recovery or bootloader.

Just reflash a Rom for your device, the reason why its not booting is when formatted system it deletes the system apps which allows the phone to work, so the phones os incomplete.

Or you could boot into bootloader and select recovery. From there connect ur phone to ur pc and from the recovery, mount sd card or toggle USB storage which ever it is... enable it and ur sdcard would appear on ur pc, from there copy ur Rom after copying the Rom, unmount ur sdcard from the recovery. From there u can go on and flash your Rom.

I realize that it works and download mode is available.
What I'm saying is that Odin itself is a leaked tool from Samsung. There is no proper documentation for it and there is no official support from Samsung since we aren't even supposed to have Odin.
Fast boot methods are recommended and supported by Google. That is the official way to get out of a jam on a nexus device.
I can't believe that I even have to explain that.
