I317m sim relocked after flashing 6.0.1 - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

The problem was resolved after flashing stock, reunlock, then restore. I will report if problems comeback.
Hello,
My phone was unlocked (not sure how, bought it second hand years ago) and used it fine on 4.4 custom rom. Ive updated it onthursday to the revolution 6.0.1 (with 3.0.2 twrp, nano open gappsa) and used it fine without problems on thursday.
However, yesterday, it lost cell signal and would not reconnect. So i rebooted the phone and now it is asking me to put sim unlock pin. What is the best course of action to get unlocked 6.0.1? I couldn't find an unlock method for 6.0.1. Should i backup rom, go back to 4.4, unlock, then restore?
Thank you.

It's asking for the sim pin or network unlock pin?

SIM Network unlock pin. My modem/bootloader is I317MVLBMA3. Do you think i can safely load a 4.1.1 rom and unlock again?
If i install phone info+ and look under secret codes, it does list the code for unlocking, but if i click on it, it gives me a blank page titled "service mode" but doesn't do anything (none of the three methods of entering work under the app). Probably because it is not stock ROM?
I tried searching for stock I317MVLALJ2 ROM to downgrade easily, but it seems like the link is down. I guess ill have to use ODIN.
EDIT:
Can I use TWRP to flash http://stockroms.net/file/GalaxyNote2/SGH-I317M/I317MVLALJ2_I317MOYAALJ2_RWC.zip stock ROM? Or do I have to use ODIN? I am assuming I can as it is a zip rather than img, and as long as I flash recovery right after flashing rom, I shouldn't lose recovery either?
Thank you.

The easiest way would be to flash a stock 4.1.1 rom in Odin. I am fairly certain you can downgrade as I think I downgraded from 4.3 or 4.4.2 on a Koodo note 2 so I could use it on Rogers. If it's not possible to downgrade, Odin will stop.

Thank you for the reply. I am currently on 6.0.1, but since modem is 4.4.2 ish, i hope that's okay. I will try ODIN. The zip i mentioned above is not a TWRP flashable zip, so I guess I have to use ODIN. The thing that worries me, though, is the fact that I cannot get to the recovery mode from off. I press and hold the volume up-power- home combo, but it keeps on resetting without entering TWRP. The only way for me to enter recovery right now is using a custom rom restart menu. If I go to stock ROM, I won't be able to access the recovery .
EDIT: If I let go of the power button at a certain time while booting, it seems to go into recovery just fine.. The problem is, that timing is tricky.

For flashing a stock rom, you need download mode so don't worry about getting into recovery.
To enter stock recovery, power off and try holding power, volume up, and home. Once the phone boots, let go of power but keep holding home and volume up until you see the dead android, then let go of all buttons.

Thank you. Flashed stock using ODIN, rebooted, showed samsung logo with music (stock boot animation), then the phone is stuck on SAMSUNG logo changing colors. Stuck there for the last 10 minutes... Not sure where to go from here ..

Boot into recovery and do a factory wipe.

Success. Thank you very much. So I've done the factory reset and successfully rebooted the phone. Then applied the unlock method, which seemed to have worked. Does not ask for SIM unlock pin. However, it does not seem to actually lock cellular signal. It still says 'Emergency Calls Only'. I am on Mobilicity, which used to be AWS, but now I believe is under Rogers. I know mobilicity used to take a while to connect, but I doubt that is the same now. This may be due to the old modem, so I will try updating the modem back to the 4.4 one... wish me luck
EDIT:
Without the modem update, it just connected to mobilicity !
Now the issue is, whether this phone will re-lock again once I flash 6.0.1...
Thank you very much audit13 for your live help!!
I will post back in a week or so (hopefully I remember...) whether this unlock sticks.

The 317m does not natively support was frequencies. You'll have to software enable was support.
You mean it doesn't ask for network unlock pin?

Yup. It unlocked for sure. But that is no different than what I had before updating to 6.0.1. I've used the phone without problems on Mobilicity for 2-3 years.
Mobilicity is no longer AWS, so it has no problems connecting to the network. It just takes a while, especially with the 4.1.1 modem...
Now I'm just restoring the TWRP backup that I have made on 6.0.1 to see if the unlock sticks.

The unlock stayed for my phone when I installed a custom rom.

Yes, that was the case yesterday as well. It stuck for a day, but after the cell lost the signal once (zero bars, emergency calls only), the phone got re-locked.
Now that I have restored the 6.0.1 backup, the phone is back up and running with it unlocked. Now ill will see how long this lasts.
Thank you very much for your continued support

I am having this issue now.. but the strange thing is that I've flashed to the Resurrection 6.0 rom a while back and it was working fine. Until a while ago I was pokemon hunting and all of a sudden my network died and its been asking me for a sim network pin... I was getting the intermittent network disconnect when I was on the Pokemon go app too long but it would reconnect back to the network after a short time.. not sure if it has something to do with the game app. Well, now I've downloaded the latest Resurrection rom and flashed it again doing a factory wipe but still nothing. I'm going to try and flash the modem and see if that helps.
EDIT: forgot to mention I'm on Koodo network which is also Telus, I believe. But now it wants to automatically connect to the rogers network hence I'm assuming its asking for the PIN.
(edited for grammar)

This is really strange that this happens. I've unlocked a few note 2 phones and none of them have relocked.
Did you change the csc in the phone settings to Koodo?

do you know why I cannot do the universal unlock method by entering the *#197328640# method? when I enter those digits nothing happens..
EDIT: Forgot to mention that the newest Resurrection rom did not work so I tried DNA 4.4 rom and still asking for unlock pin.. damn. need a new phone it seems..

I believe you need to be running a particular version of the stock Samsung dialler.

What's the csc you mentioned?

Csc is a carrier customization file. If you change the csc, which can be done using a stock rom, you can choose the carrier for whom the rom phone was intended. I choose Telus as a carrier because they have very little bloatware.

By Sim unlock, do you mean you want to use an AT&T phone on another carrier? If that's what you are looking for, give me a few minutes to test something.

Yes, of course.
But I am fairly new to the note 2 so I don't have much stored up information. I now see a post that indicates that flashing a certain 4.1.1 modem, MJ2 I think, gives the user a service menu where you can change the unlock setting. So now the OP's question makes sense. Only he should have been able to find the same post I did.
In a minute, as soon as my wife lets me borrow her phone, I'm going to test an unlock tool I know about to see if it works on 4.4.2 stock.

The dialer codes that worked on 4.1.1 to unlock the phone via the hidden menu. Does not work on 4.4.2 anymore. And being you took the ota update, there's no way of downgrading you firmware...
Sorry to tell you..
Another way is to contact AT&T by email, about unlocking the phone. Can't remember what the exact name is, but goggle search it. They'll send you the SIM code, if the phone is out of contact!!! Takes about 2-3 days when I did my skyrocket to run on TMO.

At one time, there was a free app on XDA called GalaxSim Unlock. For some reason, the developer pulled the free app download, and the only version then available was the paid version on Play. I have a copy of the free one from before it was pulled, and it works on the Captivate and the Galaxy S II, and some other galaxy phones, not sure which ones. So I tried it tonight on my wife's Note 2 which is running Stock NE5 with TWRP recovery and has the MC3 boot loader. However, the unlock failed, saying unable to read nvdata. So it's apparently a no go on this phone.

That only works if the contract the phone was in was not defaulted, and or you are the original owner of the phone.
re: sim unlock
I recently bought a soft bricked SGH-I317 (stuck on "firmware upgrade encountered and issue"). I tried flashing LJ2 firmware and got it to change to being hung on the "Samsung Note II" logo. I think this is when it changed as I was trying all sorts of flashing trying to get off the "firmware upgrade encountered an issue" screen (also Kies would not recognize that the phone was connected). Tried different recoveries and firmware without making any progress until I flashed the 4.4.2 (I317UCUCNE5) bootloader. The phone booted into Philz recovery after that. I then flashed the stock LJ2 firmware w/ LJ2 modem, sim unlocked the phone and then flashed Skynote Air 4.3 along with the 4.4.2 (NE5) modem. This is the setup that I am using on T-Mobile now with no problems except that the Knox counter is tripped. Hope this helps shed some light on the problem.
I discovered a problem with Skynote 4.3 with the 4.4.2 bootloader. If I try to charge it with the phone turned off, the phone will freeze at the empty battery symbol and requires a battery pull to get the phone to turn on. Everything else seems to work okay.

It's a network unlock, so you are free to use any GSM carrier. You can lock your sim card -- then a pin is required for your phone to connect to your carrier. It's the old skool method to stop unauthorized use, from the days before a lock screen pin.
I bought a SGH-I317M today off someone. It was locked to Bell Canada. I did the dumb thing by letting Kies update the firmware. And as i've read I'm pretty screwed for downgrading it. I tried unlocking it but the hidden menu didn't give me the 4th option in the network lock path. So i tried bunch of things which at one point required me installing Kies for drivers and thats when I i let it slip and update. So now I'm still searching for a method to unlock my phone. I've gotten philstouch recovery on and Skynote working. I just tried flashing the rogers_j2 modem.. hoping this will work.. you think I should just pay one of those sites or a retailer for the sim unlock ccode?

Please let me know if it works. mine is galaxy note 2 4.4.2 NE5 baseband and I've done some research and they said that if you upload your firmware thru OTA there is a possibility that it will soft brick you phone due to unknown security reason.
I'm just waiting for conformation from some one that it's safe to flash J2 modem on a NE5 OTA
in the US, if your phone is more than 6 months old and your contract is in good standing you can ask for the unlock code. I don't know if Canada is similar.
I was going to post the same question about unlocking I317 4.4.2, and found this post which is similar to what I'm looking for so just want to add to pump the question.
It's been a while but I have done unlocking for other At&t models (S3, S4) and learned that later versions don't with the option in hidden menu to unlock, and the work around is to downgrade. However with devices that have OTA updates, it's not possible to downgrade the bootloader.
Is this the same for Note 2 I317? If so, any other method available to unlock this device to use it on other GSM networks? (I just bought one and it's on Kitkat 4.4.2 UCUCNE5, and looking for unlock...)
It's only the modem that needs to be flashed. So whatever bootloader you're on doesn't matter.
I wanted to unlock my phone today. ATT website wouldn't let me do it until my contract was fufilled, so I did some web searching.
Started with 4.4.2 and NE5 baseband. Loaded original baseband via recovery, and used the debug menu to unlock the sim. After that, updated the baseband back to the latest. Tmobile sim seems to be working just fine.

[Q] Newly unlocked s3

Hi everyone. I just want to ask a question about my s3. So here is the scenario:
I brought my s3 locked to rogers to a CP technician and asked him if he could unlock my s3, he then told me that he can unlock it even though it is in 4.3 firmware. I don't know what he did but the only thing that I know is that he upgraded my s3 to 4.4.2 and he also rooted it. When he gave it back to me, I can already use any sim card so I guess that the unlocking is successful. The problem occured when I got home, my phone says it is in emergency calls only so i tried to toggle airplane mode on/off if it would fix the problem and it fixed it, I can call my phone again but then after 30 secs of toggling airplane mode to off, it would eventually cant receive or make calls or text. But when i toggle airplane mode on/off again, it can receive or make calls and texts but after 30 secs the problem occurs again. I go back to the CP technician to ask him what's happening but when I'm in their area, the phone works like a charm. I don't even need to toggle airplane mode on/off. And it can also receive or make calls/texts in their area. But when I go back to our place the problem occurs again.
BTW, my ImEI is still the same at the back of the phone if this info is needed.
Thank you everyone and i hope my problem will be solved.

You can flash a stock Rogers ROM. After that, you can install Philz Touch recovery, backup your current ROM, flash another a custom ROM (I like Liquidsmooth), and try it out. If you want to go back to stock, boot into recovery, and restore your backup.

Connect via wifi and install any ota updates. Then install philz and a custom rom. You may also need to install gapps if they are not included in the rom.

[Q] How to Unlock -- the code is failing, maybe root is the cause

So, I have contacted AT&T about my move to T-Mobile and that I needed my phone unlocked. They told me how to do it and once I received the code, I tried it with my cousins sim card (T-Mobile) and tried it twice, but it failed. The email in which I received the code stated that I only have 5 tries before it permanent locks to AT&T, so I stopped trying. I went to the T-Mobile store and tried with a sim card there, and it failed again. I now only have 1 last try, so I want to know if there is a way to unlock my phone after it has been rooted. I suspect the reason my unlock code is not working is because of my phone is rooted, and running the slimkat image.
Does anyone know what is the best way to proceed from here? I don't have the original image from my phone anymore, but I have my sister's phone and if making an image of her phone would work to restore my phone to AT&T, then I can do it. But if there is another way of doing this, please let me know. I even tried using some unlock tool app, but it failed. It actually doesn't do anything. I tried SGS Unlock Tool and CSC Select.

I don't believe it failed do to being rooted so much as being on a custom ROM and not having the stock dialer. You will probably be best served by reverting to a Stock ROM before using your last try. BE CERTAIN you flash the ROM appropriate for your current bootloader and modem. If you fail with your last try your only recourse will be to purchase an unlock code from a third party, or so I have read (unless you are still on the 4.1.1 bootloader and modem).
The best bet is to revert to stock unrooted if possible. What is your current boot loader? This is extremely important as this will determine your options, if any, of returning to stock and methods of unlocking.
Well, I rooted my phone back when I first got it (2 years ago), so I am not sure what boot loader I have (I think I was running Jelly Bean 4.1). I know that I never updated to anything afterwards. It was not until recently that I updated to the SlimKat, rather than trying to update to an AT&T image. If I was to install one of the stock ROMs, do I need to use my computer, or can I use TWRP? Or do I need everything to be stock?
Before flashing anything, download the Samsung Phone Info app from the play store and confirm the bootloader and modem currently on your phone. Post the version here and we'll try to help you get your phone unlocked.
Root gives you access to system files and does not have an effect on entering an unlock code into a stock ROM.
I just download an app called "Phone INFO Samsung" but I don't see anything under "Firemware's CSC Code" -- totally blank. When I choose to browse firmware, it only shows me the year 1970-01-01, and CSC: ATT. The Mnufacture date: 2013-01-19
You need to look for the bootloader, not firmware.
If you have a terminal app on your phone, open the app, type su and press enter. Type getprop ro.bootloader and press enter.
okay, this is what I got:
I747UCDLK3
Thanks for helping out with this.
So, since my attempts of unlocking have been on the non-Stock ROM, does it still count towards my 5 failed attempts? Or is the phone able to keep count of the attempts, regardless of ROM? I would assume that since the correct ROM has to be installed for the unlock code to work, then shouldn't the ROM be the one keeping count of the failed attempts, too? Just wondering...
Since you are on LK3 bootloader, that means you can use the free method to unlock your phone.
You can use Odin to flash the stock ATT 4.1.1 ROM from sammobile.com: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SGH-I747/.
Free method is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2529200

Sorry to be such noob at this, but do I need to use (Odin via) my computer, rather than using the TWRP recovery tool already on my phone? I know I have not gone through all the research material, I just did this once and never looked back, I am still in the noob stage.
Yes, you must use desktop Odin (I recommend Odin 3.07) to flash stock 4.1.1.
If you decide to flash using Odin, uncheck everything except f.reset time before flashing. After flashing and you see the word "reset" in the status window, remove USB cable, remove battery, replace battery, boot into recovery, do a full factory reset/wipe, boot the phone, use the free method to unlock the phone, restart, and you should be permanently sim unlocked.
Okay, got it! Thanks for the responses, and I appreciate the fact that you guys did not just send me searching through the tons of threads you have compiled in the forums. I was sort of expecting to be chastised for not doing extensive research before posting. You guys have been great!

Uncusseful Network unlock with cm12.1 and MJB Bootloader... Is there a way?

So here's my problem. I finally got my code to unlock my network on my Canadian rogers phone but I've realized that I need stock rom to be able to unlock and I am now on Cyanogenmod 12.1 android 5.1.1 with the I747MUMUEND3 baseband and MJB bootloader (I believe). I remember flashing a new baseband/modem to be able to get the CM 12.1 nightlies.
But now I'm stuck in France with a SIM card that doesn't work and I don't think I can downgrade from what I'm seeing in the forums. Once your beyong 4.3 there seem no downgrading/stock possibilities...
Am I stuck with a Galaxy S3 wifi tablet?!
You can flash the latest 4.4.2 stock ROM from sammobile.com, perform a factory wipe, boot phone with non-Rogers sim, enter the sim unlock code.

Sorry to ask you but I can't seem to find it. I've been searching and I found firmware
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/download/9102/I747UCDLK3_I747ATTDLK3_XXX/ but
I feel like that might not be it... And I'm scared to brick my phone!
The Rogers s3 is the Sgh-i747m.
And this gets it down to just the i747M releases by Rogers.

Unfortunately I'm now stuck on boot...
Nevermind I had to factory wipe wich I did and now I have successfully unlocked my phone. Thanks a bunch guys. Much appreciated!
So, I was given a i747 A T & T model for my daughter. I was able to get TWRP flashed and made a back up of the stock ROM. I then proceeded to flash CM12.1. Now, my question is this; I got the unlock code from the original owner and was trying to use it but it kept coming back as an incorrect code. I found this thread and realized I need the stock ROM. So if I restore the stock ROM back up, will that be enough to let the unlock code work? Unfortunately, I've already used 4 of the 5 tries, and don't want to waste the last one. Thanks for any information.
You should be fine to enter the code if you are able to restore the TWRP backup of the stock ROM.

Thanks. That's what I was thinking, but I wanted to run it by you folks here. I'd never dealt with Sim unlocking a phone before. My personal phone was purchased Sim unlocked and my next phone will be a Nexus device so the whole Sim unlocking is new territory.

Good luck. We're all here to help each other out. Let us know how it goes.

It worked great! I restored the original stock ROM backup I'd made in TWRP and then performed the unlock and it worked. I'm glad too, since it was the 5th try out of 5 tries. I'm now restoring the backup of the CM12.1 that I'd made for her last night and she's got an active phone. Thanks a lot for the confirmation.
No problem. Congratulations?

Returning to stock rom from CM 12.1 to Android 4.2.2

Hello
I am currently running CM 12.1 on my SGS3 i747m.
I want to return back to stock rom, the current version offered by Rogers is Kit Kat 4.2.2.
Is this considered a downgrade? (from CM 12..1 to Android 4.2.2) Will I brick my device?
Is returning back to stock rom the only way I can network unlock my phone?
1) it is a downgrade in android versions (lollipop to kitkat. not bootloader/modem).
2) no , will not brick your device as long as not downgrading bootloader/modem.
3) what is your current bootloader/modem version ? (if unsure , you can DL the "samsung info" app from playstore and it will tell you).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2609045
here's the xda thread for that.
4) i belive its the only free method. i think you can pay for an unlock code and not have to return to stock.
5) if returning to stock , here are directions posted by @audit13

"err on the side of kindness"
So you're telling me I do not have to revert back to stock in order to network unlock? =D
That was my only reason for reverting back to the stock rom.
correct. but i've never had to unlock one so i wouldnt know where to go or how much the code cost.
"err on the side of kindness"
***update: i just bought an unlock code
didn't work. my phone says perso lock.
sigh
if i revert my phone back to stock rom, does the recovery have to be reverted too? or it's all good.
Recovery can be custom or stock. You need to revert to the stock Samsung dialler in order to enter an unlock code.
Easiest method would be to flash the latest 4.4.2 stock Rogers rom from sammobile.com, skip through the set up, power off, insert non-Rogers sim, boot phone, enter unlock code, done.
could I install stock rom via recovery or does it have to be through Odin?
so... I tried to install the stock rom via Odin3 as instructed on Sammobile... but it gets stuck in the glowing Samsung logo during boot.
any ideas?
try thru recovery :what:

Did you perform a factory reset/wipe in stock recovery before booting the phone with the newly-flashed rom?

Are there any error messages in Odin? You're flashing the correct firmware?

So I went back to flash the latest stock firmware... and I was able to access the recovery and wipe cache and then factory reset/wipe! it worked!
=D
but I am having the same problem I started. I couldn't unlock my phone.
I entered the unlock code I got from MobileInCanada.com... and it still doesn't work.
I see that there is a free method for Android 4.1.1.
I am currently running Android 4.4.2
From Phone INFO app
Bootloader Version/PDA/CSC/Baseband: I747MWLUFOB3
Do you think I can revert back to Android 4.1.1 and try the free method? Or should I complain to the MobileInCanada about unlock code not working. Seeing as it looks like going back to stock, everything should be easy as pie to network unlock.
So you flashed back to a completely stock rom, inserted a foreign SIM card, you were prompted to enter the network unlock code, and it didn't work?
The imei in the phone matches the imei provided to mobileincanada? I have used mobileincanada but it was a long time ago. I get all my unlock codes from eBay because it's cheaper.
Do not attempt to flash any rom that is 4.3 or older as attempts to do so may hard brick the phone. Once an i747m is running a 4.3 or newer bootloader, the phone can only be unlocked with a code.

Yes! completely right! I inserted my foreign SIM card, entered the unlock code from MobileInCanada and it didn't work.
I double/triple checked the IMEI.
Mobileincanada has a very good reputation. I recommend contacting them for a refund or have them resend the code.
Thank you!
would it be a different code?
If you supply the same imei, the code should be the same. Perhaps mobileincanada looked for the wrong imei in the unlock database.
