Hey all, have the above mentioned phone, been wiped clean and factory reset, SD card blank. But when connected to internet it starts downloading an update from Att. Now I want to root, from what I've read bootloader is unlocked, and then twrp and ROM etc. Should I take the update then root or better to root and do incremental updates then ROM. Tremendous amount of info here and am still a little unsure which way to go. Thanks

The bootloader will remain unlocked regardless of whether you do or do not take the OTA updates.
If the phone is not sim unlocked and it is still running 4.1.2, downgrade the phone to 4.1.1 using the stock ROM from sammobile.com and use the free method to sim unlock before flashing or updating.

Awesome I will, thanks much.

OK did as you said and as far as I can tell all well, now I need to update bootloader and radio/modem. Found both on xda, cwmi747ucuemjb, can I go straight to this bypassing the others. Looking to run carbon ROM d2lte 4.4.4 that I have saved. Also will update twrp to latest too. Bootloader still be unlocked right? Sorry been on Verizon so don't want to screw up.

All versions of the i747 bootloader are unlocked.
So I can jump straight to njb from lk3 and then to ne4 using the files I downloaded. One place said to go one by one. You know I forgot to check the dates of the posts. Thanks for your help.

hey guys, checked multiple threads, but could not find one specifically for the s3 t999.
i have an unlocked t999, which i have rooted, and has CWM recovery.
tried a few times to do the update over OTA but that failed most probably because of the CWM recovery. then, i read on a couple of threads that if i update the firmware throug Kies, i can still do a successful update in spite of the CWM.
now, this question has just cropped into my head.
if i am successfully able to update the firmware from UVALEM to UVLH2, is there any chance that my unlocked phone would get locked? i am not in the country and with no access to the t-mobile customer care, etc.
cheers!
Where did you get the unlock code from?
I'd ask them, but you can find stuff on Google saying it should be fine if you used an unlock code

this is a factory unlocked phone. would this make a difference as compared to a code retrieved through tmo's cust care?
i have now upgraded the t999 to T999UVLH2 without locking the phone!
since i had CWM recovery, i switched over to t-mobile's stock recovery before applying the update.
now, i have lost the root, but i am following other threads to get it back and switch back to CWM recovery.
thanks!
I hope i didnt just turn my phone into a paper weight.
I was following through doing everying in order to root my phone and didnt realize one thing until it was too late.
when the phone restarted a "verizon 4glte" screen splashed on the phone and it stuck that way. The problem is my phone is from sprint. Is there any way I can get it back to normal? I really have no idea how I missed that.
I think i downloaded the correct tar file or whatever file i need for the stock sprint setup, but i keep getting an error when installing it through odin.
how can i go back to my stock SPRINT rom without having to wipe everything?
pleeeaaaase help. much appreciated.
Download twrp odin file to get that recovery then download any rom zip and flash

Thankfully there's a fix. You'll need to bypass the activation screen to enable usb debugging quickly before the nag screen appears. When the nag screen appears you'll need to reset the device and start over (after the nag screen is shown once it'll come back quicker next times). Once usb debugging is enabled you need to unlock the bootloader and then you'll be able to flash the L900 firmware. This method may be a bit dated as I used it on 4.1.2 (on an R950 but the L900 will be the same.)

i dropped the phone off at a cell phone shop to get it fixed and they couldnt figure it out.
i did a little digging and found this out. the file i installed to mess up the phone was this:
root66_VZW_stock_system.tar
so my phone is running a rooted verizon os, i didnt know that.
if it helps, it says im running build number i605vraljb and android version 4.1.1
so i have super user access and debugging is enabled, now what?
so i'm guessing bootloader is already unlocked?
honestly, anyone that gives me info that actually gets my phone working will not only get a thanks but $50 through paypal. im dead serious.

Power down your phone. Hold power home and vol down at the same time to get to download mode. Using Odin on PC flash the file found her http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2591898. That's up to date stock for your phone. If you still want root Google "kingo root" and use that to root

you accidentally installed a Verizon rom. You however DID NOT install a Verizon bootloader. Odin would not allow it. Thank God casual failed otherwise you'd be hard bricked. Ensure you have a custom recovery. Then wipe and flash my mc2 zip from here and you'll be straight again.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2086769
Are you sure? Someone brought in a soft bricked R950 (I know...different model but as long as it's not on 4.3 I doubt it'd matter for this situation) with ALL VZW firmware on it. Bootloader and all. I had to run CASUAL to unlock the bootloader to accept the R950 USCC firmware. Without CASUAL it kept failing in Odin (to preserve the VZW Note II firmware).
Guess I shouldve done more digging to see exactly what the OP did before pointing straight to a locked bootloader. I'm pretty sure that's the case though...I don't see any other reason for a MD5 tarball to fail. I don't think that particular VZW firmware build has secureboot.

Hello,
I have always thought that OTA update would fail with a custom recovery. However after reading about another user's experience I decided to try it. This person stated that when they did the update CWM warned them that it would be replaced and asked if they wanted to fix it. It also warned that they would lose root and asked if they wanted to fix it. Sound familiar to anyone?
I did download the update but when I tried to install it failed. Now AT&T says my software is up to date, which is not true.
I am still on 4.1.2, rooted, CWM installed. Best way to upgrade now? I can't even find the OTA upgrade file that I downloaded.

From my experience with 3 i747m phones, rooted systems well not take an ota update.
Yup, you cannot get the ota if rooted, or with a custom recovery. You need to be full stock. Best way is a fresh firmware flash and factory reset.
I don't have to install OTA, I just wanted to update to the latest official AT&T version. Is there a flashable available that will work coming from 4.1.2?
By the way I used triangle away, downloaded update again, thought it was going to work but the update crashed

The latest firmware that's available is the 4.3 build. Havent been able to make a working one for 4.4.2 yet. But you can update using that firmware then use one of the threads in this section to update to kk.
Ok confused. Not sure how to install 4.3. Have read about bootloaders and modems needed before flashing. Guess I will have to keep reading. How to gy from 4.1.2 rooted, CWM, to the latest official which now I think is 4.3?

You can either follow the OP through step 4, or flash the firmware from this thread using Odin. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2722660
After that you can follow the remaining steps in this OP, or try to get the official ota to update to 4.4.2.
Since you do not have the 4.3 bootloader, you could start fresh by installing stock 4.1.1 from sammobile.com using Odin and then just keep running OTA until you get to 4.4.2. Remember, using Odin will wipe everything on the phone so make sure you backup your important data.

Everytime I try to download something from Sammobile.com my AVG pops up a warning. Is this normal? I haven't yet made it through all of their stalls, installs, etc. to get to downloading the actually firmware.
Used to love AVG. But I think theyve gone downhill and this is a perfect example. Its a false positive. (Unless your browsers been hijacked or youre clicking on a bad/fake link).
Ive been using sammobile for years and never had a single problem.
I have been using sammobile for quite some time.
The site is legit. Maybe avg is causing the problem. I can download with no problem.
Not trying to be annoying, as I said haven't done any of this for a while but.....could I not flash a stock recovery, use triangle away, unroot, and then get the ota to work?

You could try that but there is no guarantee that it'll take the OTA update after going through the procedure you described.
If you removed too many Samsung Apps, that may cause the OTA update to fail as well.
Don't think I removed any Samsung or ATT apps I just had them disabled. Since I tried to run the update though they have all resurrected themselves. I have never flashed a stock recovery or unrooted before though

All I can say is try it and see what happens. If it doesn't work, the simplest would be to restore to completely stock and start the OTA update process.

Is your phone sim unlocked? If it isn't, you could flash back to a stock AT&T 4.1.1 ROM, unlock, and run OTA updates until your have the latest ROM on your phone. This approach requires more time but it is the simplest and least risky in my opinion.
So basically you're saying to flash back to unrooted stock. And then keep using att updates until I get to the latest one, and then I should be on ne4 automatically?? Not sure if I'm understanding this correctly.

Yes, flash back to stock and keep running ota until you hit the latest release.
If you have warranty left on your phone, updating, rooting, and loading a custom recovery will change the warranty bit from 0 to 1 which voids the remaining warranty.

True, once you are on 4.3 or higher bootloader, you cannot go back to stock 4.1.1.

And if I were to factory reset the phone am I going to lose the sim unlock?
Reset or ROM flashing won't undo sim unlock. You can flash latest T-Mobile firmware via Odin. See links in General section. You can't actually run ATT firmware due to slightly different hardware platform. And their bootloaders are locked so you wouldn't want to! I recommend you flash latest firmware, then install debloated ROM and install just apps you wish.

I have not updated any firmware on the s4? Only flashed roms aosp/cm/stock bases. The s4 is my wifes phone so I only flashed about a dozen different roms ranging from 4.2-6.0.1 and never lost unlock.
The reason for this is that information used to lock/unlock is stored in a location untouched by roms and modems. I also own a note 2 which I unlocked and it only lost unlock once but that was due to playing with stuff even most advanced users dont mess with.
So feel free to explore and enjoy the range of roms out there but stick to tmobile only firmware (radios/bootloaders) and tmobile or i9505 roms. If you stray outside those two sections you could end up with major issues including bricks if you flash firmware that is not for tmobile.
