Hello all, pretty new to LG phones but I'm thinking of getting an LG3 or LG4 (since I have the opportunity to get a NIB of either one very inexpensively). Normally I would just get the latest (G4) but I like to flash and try out different ROMs and there doesn't seem to be much custom ROM dev work being done here. Is this something that is expected to get better in awhile? Anyways thank you for your feedback ahead of time.

If they are inexpensive, buy both. Then play with both. Sell the one that doesn't suit you.
Personally, I prefer my G4. Much smoother, brighter screen and better battery life than my G3.

I have both (and a Nexus 6) but I'm pretty much only using my G3. If you really do want to be able to flash stuff the 3 is the way to go. It's still a very solid device.
Thank you for your time and replies. You guys have articulated my ying/yang on these phones. I've actually been able to spend a few days with each device and overall I like the G4 hardware better (not a big fan of big phones and it seems the G3/G4 are right at the limit, but the G4 seems a "better fit" in my hand. Maybe due to the slight curve in it). But the lack of substantial ROM development is really a turn off. To be honest I'm just using whichever phone I buy as a bridge device until next year. I am tempted to just getting both and hoping that the ROM dev work on the G4 increases over time.
As crazy as it seems, I'm actually more interested in buying an OP3 more than an OP3T right now. I really value a bustling dev scene (coming from an OPO has truly spoiled me); I'm unsure that the 3T will match the 3s dev scene. Unfortunately, Oneplus has stopped selling OP3s entirely on their website. First off, should I even be considering the OP3 or should I just go with that 3T? And if I should get an OP3, is there any place where I still can?

I bought mine from Swappa.com
I think in op3ts forum, there aren't any dev support yet because they r considering and working on bringing nougat 7 to the device rather than old MM 6.
But I also heard that the top devs from op3 aren't willing to support op3t. I just heard it don't know the certainty.

I'm wary to use Swappa for this particular device because I'm afraid there's a chance I'll get a Chinese variant without the bands I need. How was the experience on Swappa for you?

This is a possibility, but you are right that many OP3 top devs aren't supporting the OP3T and that includes SultanXDA. The question if any other well known devs are looking to pick it up (and those devs most likely won't be coming from an OP3).
Oneplus 3 will have the most dev support.. When the 3T launched we didnt have alot of new devs.. But now it seems that we are the new nexus.

Mine went well. I asked the seller for proof of purchase in the US. Then when I got it, I installed SignalCheck and popped my sim card in. Showed it connected to T-Mobile band 4 LTE. The Chinese variant doesnt have this band, so I am good.

If it is not as described, start a return via PayPal and Swappa. I've had to do this twice with iPhones when they were misrepresented by the seller and it has worked out just fine.
I bought mine for $200 with 5 oneplus 3 official cases , like new condition. Offerup,. Best phone yet.

And SultanXDA just updated his rom+kernel both op3 and op3t
you might want to grab op3t now

Just buy the 3T development will pick up soon. Oneplus is giving out the the 3T to Devs
First don't expect the same level of dev support, the OP3T is new and the OP3 was killed after only 6 months.
The number of developers working on the 3 is not going to increase because they're not seling the phone anymore, so beetween the two I think that the 3T is the best option.
Also, ignore all the noise made by some developers. All Oneplus had to do was send them a new phone and everyone is happy again.
I just bought OnePlus 3 How do I know if its Chinese variant?
I havent had 4G/4G lte yet.

A3003 it's European, and wwe, i think. Maybe looking on the 4g bands..
Trees are gonna to be unified so don't worry go for 3t.
I got this phone mostly because the hardware specs were top notch and my old Zenfone 2 (Z00A) had amazing CM support and even an official bootloader unlock. The ZS570KL still has yet to get so much as a root. Going from CM to the bloated, ugly stock ROM hasn't been fun and I can't wait to get something better. I've prodded ASUS for info on a bootloader unlock and they have basically just said that they can't comment on a release date, or if it's even coming at all.
Is there any active development for this phone or is it just dead?
it's active, but what you see here, is all answered questions that we ask already, so there isn't much we can do , until we get from asus. And then alert every develop out there to start making custom roms for this phone.
I think many people like myself are waiting on the bootloader unlock before buying. If they are going to release it, it better be soon. Else they risk newer phones coming out that trump the specs of this phone that ARE developer friendly. This ship had almost sailed to be honest. What are they waiting for?

Yeah, I'm almost regretting buying it to be honest. I really expected it to be popular in the dev community especially given ASUS' history and that bootloader unlocks are already available for the non deluxe ZF3 and even the ZS550KL. The LG V20, the other phone I was heavily considering waiting for, came out almost a month after this phone already has some ROMs coming out.
This phone has amazing specs and design but is just let down so much by terrible firmware and a completely dead dev community. It's a shame.
Your absolutely correct. Such a shame that a beast of a phone goes quietly in the night. It would've been such an upgrade from my Nexus 6P.
My wild guess is that Asus will release our unlock around April-June when phones are starting to come out with the next snapdragon chipset and 6gig ram is all over the market. At that time, the qualities that make this special will be gone. I don't understand this logic at all.
I really like this phone but all the ways Asus tried to kill its success boggles my mind. The lack of an official bootloader when all their other models have one is just another nail in the coffin of an otherwise really good phone. I thought Asus had learned their lesson... guess not.
The 3 biggest reasons for failure in the dev community:
1. No Bootloader (yet)
2. Price
3. Availability
Its dumbfounding. Such a beautiful phone with amazing specs and Asus care absolutely zero about marketing this phone outside Asia. I had to buy it online because they decided not sell it in Canada. And even online the availability is limited to Taiwan only with every reseller getting it from there in short supply. I don't even think there is a north american model. Why not have faith in your brand? Asus said they didn't think the deluxe would do well in north america with all the competition so they abandoned it. They also thought the phone would not sell because its too expensive but then realized demand for it exceeded the supply and decided to increase production.

Seems like a surefire recipe for failure to me....
I have the SD821 versian, I had to pay through the teeth to get it then when it gets shown to others thet all want to know where to get it and how much it cost. Word of mouth is a great way to do business but the product MUST be available.
I had the subforum tab open to check up on this later, but I'm updating some software right now and noticed this post title... I still have the phone unopened in the box Amazon shipped it in. I guess this is Asus' loss releasing a phone during the only extended return period of the year. I've read a few negatives on the ZF3 Deluxe like low headphone volume and intermittent Bluetooth, but unlocking is what I want.
Since I have until the end of next month to return it to Amazon I figured I would pick up the OnePlus 3T and give it a try - free 15 day return period. I thought, what the heck - I paid more for the ZF3 so why not get the 128GB 3T? Added it to my cart and on the checkout page it gave an estimated date (was within 9 days). I wanted to see what I said the ETA would be on the 64GB model that was listed as shipping within 3 weeks and removed the 128GB model. Went to add the 128GB model back in less than a minute after checking the 64GB model...sold out and it's been like for the last 2 weeks. Talk about frustrating! I ended up ordering the 64GB model and figure I can just send it back to OnePlus when the 128GB's are back in but I'm afraid they still won't be available to order at the end of January. So here is this ZF3 D I don't think I really want. :/
jsheradin, you said the bootloader is unlocked for the other ZF3 models - any idea why not this version of the Deluxe?
If it made any sense, there would be no doubt Asus wanted the ZF3 to fail.

Yep, the unlock is available for everything but the 820 and 821 variants. I assume it's simply that these processors require a little more work to make an unlock utility for, but I'm just guessing at that point.

It does not. The ZS550KL has a single version and it is a snapdragon 625. It has the same processor as the non deluxe ZF3 (Z3520KL) which came out before the deluxes. They probably already made the unlock for the non deluxe and it required very little work to make it work for the 5.5 deluxe. The 820/821 versions did not have that luck and they likely have to make the unlock from scratch.
Hey, I agree with all on this thread. I have the Zen 2 deluxe SE with Cyangenmod and its a great phone. Purchased the Zen 3 but have yet to use it because I cannot root. I also read that Cyangenmod is no longer offering custom ROM or am I not understanding their changes? Does this mean the chances of a custom rom for Zen 3 is out? I also upgraded my wife's phone (S5) to the same Zen 3 deluxe (ZS570KL / 256gb hd / 6gb ram / 821 chip) and she hates it... calls keep dropping signal is low and it does not even say LTE. I did a speedtest comparison betwen her Zen 3 and my Zen 2 and it was faster. Hers is also disconnecting from cellular (AT&T) data and does not show 4G anymore along with no push notifications of emails.
Anyone else having these issues?
Joining in on the bandwagon to vent (really)... This was my # 1 phone to get in 2016, despite the lack of Quad HD screen (especially for the price), but Asus botched it BIG TIME! The price on the SD821 model, even more frustrating, the lack of availability, even during the holiday season, and of course, now announcing their new 2017 models, with no unlocked BLs or Root... what an opportunity missed! Would have been such a strong jab against the 3T, but they ruined it!
I bugged Asus again via email and received this response, again:
"Temporary we haven't got the accurate time the unlock tool would be released for this ZS570KL.
But we will transfer customers' wishes to the related department for further development.
Also please note that ASUS does not actually asssit with unlocking of the Android Bootloader. I must advise that you do so at your own risk, as once the boot loader is unloked it will void your warranty."
I'm just hoping there is an unofficial unlock at this point. The stock ROM seems to somehow get more buggy and slow day by day. Is anyone else having issues with the screen taking forever to turn on after using fingerprint/pressing the side button?

I used this form to submit it: https://vip.asus.com/VIP2/Services/QuestionForm/TechQuery?lang=en-us
I just said, "When can the bootloader unlock utility be expected to be released?"
They responded promptly yet disappointingly. Hopefully if enough of people ask they will finally get around to making/releasing it.
Does anybody know if there is unofficial unlock work being done?
If an unlock is ever made we just need to get someone who knows TWRP to build a recovery and ideally somebody from Lineage OS to start ROM support. I've built TWRP before for a different device and may be able to do the same for this phone but I wouldn't know where to begin to get a ROM working. I feel like no devs even know this device exists. :crying:

The biggest question we should all ask ourselves... "Why did ASUS build this phone in the first place if they didn't have a bootloader unlocker for it?"
hello everyone. I'm thinking of buying a new phone after my g4 boot looped. this one is among one of the final choices.
so i wanted to get your view on this one as you all have been using it.
how is the speed?
the camera (front and back both)?
is the touch good?
and now down to the more deep questions.
which variant should i buy? i wanna use all features. i wanna root. i wanna unlock the bootloader. i wanna do much more. so which variant is the best?
and does it have any problems like the g4 boot loop problem?
thanks alot for your help.
I recoomend that you should wait for the OnePlus 5 (or 4) and buy that instead.

Hi first of all I know the pain of that g4 bootloop problem it happened to mine and I still haven't got a refund so I bought the oneplus 3 , the first thing you'll notice is the camera the g4's camera was amazing and oneplus 3 camera is okay but not like a DSLR and the second thing is the screen the G4 used LCD but oneplus3 uses amoled so it saves a lot of battery (with the right settings) but it's not as punchy , the good things about oneplus 3 is it's very easy to root it's covered under warranty for rooting and the development scene is really good alot of Devs work on this phone which means more goodies for us it's fast , it's light , it's not got a stupid over packed skin UI it's a very good phone , however I would rather wait til the Oneplus 5 comes out and get that or when the OP5 is released the 3t will most likely go down in price so I'd probably get that either way you'll have a decent phone.... Hope my info helped.

1. ONEPLUS 3 is quite fast. VertexOS with EAS takes it to the next level.
2. Camera both are actually quite good.. Low light is a little meh but it is not bad!
3. The touch. Well I came from A 5,5inch phone that was like a brick... This device lies in hand really good.
4. I would go for the Oneplus 3T or wait to see how expensive the Oneplus 5 is.
5. Rooting etc no problem make sure you do research first before asking questions. Oneplus covers warrenty even when rooted.
6. It does not have any problems currently. Is your G4 still under warrenty? Bootloops can just happen it doesn't mean your device is dead.

The G6 seems to have a really active dev community. Is that a one off or is that constant? Is it easy to root LG devices? I have a choice between this of the S9+ and I can't decide on what to go for.

I can't speak on behalf of the LG community as of late but the last time I had one, the G4, there was plenty of people wanting to mod/create ROM's but couldn't due to LG's restrictive bootloader unlock nature.
If it means anything, I wouldn't grab the Snapdragon 845 version of the S9+ either. If you want to root/flash ROM's, you need to get the Exynos version of the S9+. I wouldn't, as there is reportedly severe battery issues with the Exynos chipset. Getting root on the S8+ with the Snapdragon version took a very very long time whereas there was virtually no wait for the Exynos version.
I really hope there's some development for the G7!
I think it died after the G4. Just the for traffic alone in these G7 forums, should show that not many are interested in LG anymore. If it weren't for the free phones promo, I prolly wouldn't even get an LG.
The V20 had a pretty nice community for T-Mobile at least and even somewhat still does. The reason I got the Note 8 over the V30 was it had and still currently has root which I need in order to even use a phone to my liking. If the G7 or V40 has a nice root community I might get the V40. However at this point I'm likely just getting a Oneplus 6. As at this point I doubt we'll have root on the Note 9 Snapdragon version or T-Mobile devices as a whole. They used to be really root friendly like Sprint then once they became big they became pretty bad from a customer standpoint. They definitely are better than the other big two but not the carrier I fled to years ago.

This is the damned truth. I wouldn't have purchased the G7 has it not been for the buy one get one free thing..
Use to be the go to dev friendly brand...not anymore. I really wish a mainstream brand would allow for this stuff, but it seems the carriers won.
Seems like OnePlus is the way to go. Or perhaps Xiaomi. None of the mainstream brands unfortunately.
