I now have two ASUS supplied chargers that appeared to not work again after one successful charge (after leaving them on the shelf for a bit). Plug them in now and they work for a second and then give up. Am I missing something obvious - couldn't find anything in the threads? Thanks!

Have plugged the chargers into another device? Sounds like a phone problem to me bad connection on micro usb

I have had the problem of "Unsupported power adapter" I have tried multiple chargers
Sometimes it works, sometimes it stops charging.
Usually a reboot will have it working again
You need to replace the usb port.
I'm with fastmix replace your USB port

Thank you all for this input. The chargers don't work on other phones either, most of the time, but then occasionally change their minds and do. Very odd.

this sounds like a normal issue of broken/cheap cable. i have gone through many micro USB cables but not ports. if the cable works in some positions or twisted orientations but not others, this is the cause. buy a cable thats nicer than a dollar store cable, if it works 100% of the time on something else and not your phone, replace the port. try different cables before breaking out the soldering iron.

Sensible. My soldering iron looks more like road drill, so probably a very good start.

I was wondering if anyone has bought a longer USB cable, the one that came with the AT&T Ion is too short and the phone has to be on the floor while charging.
A cable might seem like something so basic that any cable with the right connectors should work, but apparently not. The Kindle has the same type of port and the Ion and yet the Kindle cable doesn't charge the ion (when used with the Ion power adapter, of course). So if you've found a long USB cable that works, please post it here.
I think I saw one in a Japanese store the other day that was circum $5 for a 6 ft cable, and I'm gonna go buy it tomorrow. I'll report back if it works or not.

Used Ion Power plug - 6' HTC Micro USB cable worked well.
I had a longer cable from my Xperia X10, so fortunately that worked out for me. I have succesfully used Blackberry, Samsung, and generic cables though. You can get a Sony Ericsson cable for about $6 on Amazon too.

I don't think any cable will work. Just to be sure, I tried the Kindle cable with the Ion adapter again, and it also didn't work. That cable connects to the computer fine, and the charge seemed stable, but when used with the wall plug it wasn't charging steadily although the LED light on the phone was on all the time.

thats interesting because I've been using every mirco usb cable I have in my house and its all working fine, maybe I should clarify it depends on the quality of the cable. but those links I posted above should work fine...

The problem with some micro-usb cable like the one I bought from Wal-Mart is that they do not have an extra line that allows for data connections to computers and that extra power is what keeps the phone charging stable.

Most micro-usb cables will work but some cables are only meant for charging and wont connect to a computer.
I use this 6' cable from AmazonBasics
http://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-...r=1-1-catcorr&keywords=micro+usb+amazonbasics
Works great for data or charge. I travel with it VERY frequently and I abuse it. Used it for just under a year with my x10 and the phone-end started getting loose. Amazon replaced it free and my new one has been going strong for almost a year. I'm honestly surprised they last as long as they do the abuse I put them through

I got a mediabridge 6 ft cable from Amazon, it wasn't as cheap as some of the others posted here (I ordered before that post). Tried it during the weekend and it worked perfectly, so something must be missing from the Kindle cable.
I just recently went to Kyoto, and accidentally left my charger in the hotel (usual pretty careful, but eh). So I just went to the nearest tech shop and bought a nice 1.5 meter cable, and it's so much nicer. Kinda makes me glad I left the damn charger.

Any micro usb will work now the only difference is that the ones that say "file transfer" are for transfer and charging, the ones for "charging" are for charging only i made the mistake of trying to get the one from my truck to transfer data.. didnt happen lol had to wait till i got to my house and use the right cable. may be my luck, would like to see if there is a true difference
Just got it this week. $3

Also, anybody know if the ION will support an OTG cable?
from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
Its been touched on, but just in case. The Ion uses a micro USB connection, that is the socket on the phone itself. There are lots of connections that look like micro USB, but aren't...obviously those won't work, as they don't fit. So when buying a longer cable, make sure its Micro USB (not Mini USB, by they way...that too is different)
Also, as mentioned, some older cables..especially those that came with some older cell phones, would be power only...no data transfer ability (AT&T loved including these with older Samsung phones, as they wanted you to buy a $30 data cable before leaving the store). They'll charge the phone from a wall or a computer, but with hit or miss results..some will confuse the phone, as it doesn't know what type of connection it has, others will charge very slow, etc. there is no reason anymore to buy a power only cable, especially considering all these cables are cheap. I lucked out, my logitech mouse came with a 6 foot micro USB data cable for adjusting its button configuration and charging...so i just use that with the wall mount, works great.
I ordered a bunch of USB extension cables from eBay, my cable is like 14 feet long now lol they are cheap

The reason I ask is because I have multiple USB charging cords laying around the house, and I actually wanted to take 1 to work. And since at work I need a long cable, I brought to my job.
The problem is that the cable I brought to my job is not an official Samsung cord, and it would plug into the bottom port, but it wouldn't charge. So then I went to another cord and apparently that one won't even plug into the bottom. The ironic part is that all of these cords would plug into my old Samsung Epic 4g Touch and worked fine with it. But now I've come to presume that not all chords are the same.
My question is has anybody else encountered the same problem? Or do I have a faulty bottom port? Yes I know I'm probably sounding paranoid, but it would be nice to know if this is an isolated incident. Thanks everyone.

I've plugged it in to many different cables, all work just fine.
I have an HTC one that gave me problems (difficult to physically plug in; once it was in charging was fine with the Note 2 adapter). So yes, I have noticed that. I assumed it relates to the changes (?) Samsung made in the port to allow for other connectors like docking and MHL, etc. (at least I think I read something about that). That same HTC cord has worked with every other phone I've ever used, including the Note 1. But most of my cords have no issues with the Note 2, so I'm chalking it up to tight manufacturing tolerances as companies try to cram more stuff into a small port.
I have been using an htc one with my pc. Im surprised it even charges my phone at all since most car chargers wont and we all know that charging by pc is really slow. I mostly use it for transfering files though. Maybe you do have a faulty one? Another thing you ahve to realize is the orig charger is a 2 amp and most other ones are 1 amp.
Does anyone have the same problem?
when the usb charging cable plugs into the phone...there's a slight play/free room while plugged?
Not really. It just unplugs very easily. Wouldn't sweat it really unless you have sloppy charging issues. Try a different cord and see if you have a tighter one that works better if you do. I am going to be doing the wireless charging mod to save my USB port anyways. I miss the charging dock of the galaxy nexus greatly because I hardly ever used my USB port.

Agreed. And it's not the phone's microUSB port. It's the cable included. It's quite pathetic. I failed charging my phone once because it was JUST A BIT OFF because of this looseness with the cable. Ugh.
On another note, can one easily replace this microUSB cable and STILL reap the advantage of the 2mA charging adapter?
Should be able to unless your cord is bunk.

I want to purchase a 6 or 9 foot cable for my note 8. Will any kind of cable be OK? I will be using the samsung wall plug with it. Thanks for your help!!
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
The only thing I can suggest is that you try it. But normally long USB cables do not have a happy ending. I have some short cables that will not charge the note.
You may want to get the thickest cable you can find and hope the thickness is in the copper and not cheap cladding.
I am using a 10ft cord from kindle. Works great. Got it at walmart
Sent from my GT-N5110 using xda app-developers app
I think the cable is good up to 2 meters (6 feet), any cable longer than that will result very slow charging or even does not charge at all.
The kindle one has no issues charging the note8. I was worried as l have heard nothing over 6ft but this one works just fine.
Hi.. i purchased a note 3 from someone .. the original 3.0 USB cord and charger base is there but when i go to charge the phone, it doesnt take the charge until i pull upon the end of the charger where the USB meets the bottom of my phone..
it looks like something may be missing there or something isn't tight.. can you take your note 3 back cover off and let me know if yours loook like mine? I was going to purchase another 3.0 cord but i dont think it's that... the regular chargers work in my phone and that's what i've been having to use
I'd appreciate your help. some pics i just took are below

Try and tighten the 2 screws (half turn) on either side of the usb port, and see if that will help. I just had the same problem and that fixed it.

I'm having trouble with a 2.0 cable too. Maybe the stiff, heavy, white cable damages the USB port.

Funny because I just got my note 3 2 months ago I could only use 3.0 USB for the first 2 or 3 weeks until it's started charging my phone super slow or not at all... USB 2.0 works tho...

My wife and I are have the same issue. Both phone charge using usb 2.0 cords with the oem wall plug but won't charge with the oem 3.0 cords. Started a few weeks ago, up until yesterday my cord still worked on both phone but not today
.....grrrrr
The charging cables from Samsung seem to be faulty, both of my factory cables have gone bad (mine and my wife's) but my third party cable works wonderfully.
Yep, same here. It's a really strange problem. Mine stopped charging with the oem cable maybe a month after I got it (tried tightening the screws on the port, which did feel a bit loose), but still had problems with charging. The OG cable does however mount the phone on my computer for odin / file transfers so I just got a wireless charging module and charge my phone that way. Adding further to the mystery, I just ordered this micro usb 3.0 hub: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JWM7GUY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 but I haven't bothered to try it out until right before posting this (I had a pack of 10 micro usb 2 port covers and I'm down to like 2 because I frequently lose them when I take them out; wish I could find one that attaches to the phone, like the one on the S5, anyone know where one could obtain such a product??) Anyways, the hub works fine, plugged my ps3 controller and a flash drive into usb ports on the hub and it worked no problem.
So, the port seems to work for anything except charging with the OG cord (just noticed that it does actually charge if I plug a power cord (not included) into that hub. The OG cord doesn't work anymore for charging, but provides a perfectly stable connection to my PC. So, in conclusion:
