Does the Verizon Note 4 allow simultaneous voice and data like the S5 and, basically, all prior android devices on Verizon? Or is it like the Droid Turbo / 2014 Moto X where it won't be doing voice/data at the same time until it receives the VoLTE update?
Yes i am sure it does...even the note 3 did.

I appreciate that, but the same can be said for the Droid Maxx and original X, and the new ones don't do it. Forgive me for being anal, but do you have one in hand or were you saying that just b/c of the Note 3?

Voice and data at the same time have been available since Verizon brought out 4g LTE service. If you're in a LTE service area (most of the country with Verizon).... Then voice goes over the old CDMA network and data is on lte. And you can use both at the same time.
VoLTE is different, and is being rolled out to devices.

Only on Android devices (most, not all), and only because they built a "dual" antenna/radio setup on the snapdragon chipsets. But for whatever reason on the new X and Turbo, they went away from that. So the only way to have that function again is with the somewhat unreliable VoLTE.
Thanks for confirming the Note 4 still can...
Was going to say. I have been able to since s3 & first time was with HTC Thunderbolt
Pretty much since lte service

Note: This is NOT true for the Motorola Droid Turbo. I have one. I'm returning it for several reasons, this being one. The only way to get simultaneous voice and data is VoLTE which isn't available on the Turbo yet.
I think all Samsung smartphones on Vzw does. Well, every 4G LTE Samsung... and HTC, right?

The iPhone 6 do have volte but you have to enable it. The downside is that your voice quality could be impacted if your data connection sucked. Didn't sound like a feature that turns on/off automatically with all the warning messages it gave me.

Ah, iPhones! I remember having a Blackberry, they both have/had potential. Just lack on progressing in innovation & giving users opportunity to help them grow.
I see Windows phones being a bigger threat to Androids innovation & expansions sooner than Apple here before long. Can't just hold on to ideas, you run with them!

Whats excruciating to me is the fact that on my Galaxy Note 4, I could be on a call and surf at the same time on the 4g network. On my Verizon Galaxy Note Edge, I cannot. Thats nuts!
I may have to turn on advanced calling if I want this feature.
I call using Google Hangout dialer. Voice and data works fine like that.

It's due to the antenna setup.
In order for voice and data to function simultaneously on Verizon without VoLTE, there has to be two separate antennas - one for CDMA and one for LTE. Some of Verizon's recent devices (such as the Note Edge and Droid Turbo) only have one shared antenna, meaning that only CDMA or LTE can run, not both. It's certainly frustrating for many users, and while Verizon's reasoning for this makes some sense, it's still not great at this time for those who use the feature. With the network moving toward LTE-only with VoLTE, Verizon's reasoning is in part based on this - why include additional hardware at additional cost and space (a second antenna) to run voice and data simultaneously when the same feature can be achieved with one antenna and VoLTE? Of course, VoLTE isn't completely ready for prime time, and they're still working out issues, so for many it's not a true replacement at this point. But that's a big reason why some of Verizon's recent phones can't do simultaneous voice and data without VoLTE - Verizon is trying to pave the way for VoLTE adoption.
Which NEW phones support Voice and Data (WITHOUT) using VoLTE... I have a 2013 Moto X that supports this, and refuse to upgrade until I can find a new device that does support this -- where can I find this data? I would imagine some phone (like a Nexus 5X) might support this since it's not made specifically for Verizon? And before it gets asked, VoLTE is too unreliable for my needs --- when using it on my work iPhone 6S calls drop constantly, so I've had to disable it... but still need voice AND data at once. Any resources / sites listing which devices support this feature would be really helpful.
Issue:
Phone will not stay locked on LTE in Global or LTE/UMTS/GSM mode. When in Global or LTE/UMTS/GSM mode and LTE does connect, it's momentarily and when trying to run a speed test or open a webpage, it quickly disconnects and connects to HSDPA. If switched to LTE/CDMA signal locks in great and data speeds are great however voice services are not available. Any thoughts or advice is welcomed. Thanks ahead of time!

What band LTE are you connecting to? I found that here on band 2, I will connect at first, but then it switches back to edge. Seems fine in a band 4 LTE area though.

I haven't found LTE Discovery to report the band correctly, at least in my case. It would say I'm on band 4 on my Moto X, but when using a band 4 only device I would only get Edge, but when I go in a confirmed band 4 area it works fine. From what I've found, most 2G > LTE sites were converted to band 2 LTE. Although since you get HSPA the chances of it actually being on band 4 are higher.
I'm fairly certain this is a Band 4 area. The latest T-Mobile maps are pretty good about pointing out Band 2 areas. I've since sold the phone and acquired a iPhone 6 Plus which I'm looking to sell to replace it with an international G4 or T-Mobile G4. I was pretty impressed with that phone. If I had to rank my favorites, it's number 2. Nexus 5 is still king of the hill for me. There wasn't a better phone out when it was release for a better price.
did you ever figure this out? samething is happening to me
Unfortunately I didn't. I sold it and bought one for T-Mobile...... Which I just sold about 3 hours ago.
So I tested it out again, and in a band 2 area when I boot up my phone with a T-Mobile SIM, I get LTE for several seconds then it cuts back over to 2G.
Now that there is a new software update for the G4, I wonder if this is anymore reliable. Anyone who took the OTA update in the past few days, can you let us know if it's any better?

Been there, done that...wanted to switch over to T-Mobile, but unfortunately, the VS986 only works with two of their three LTE bands, as you know, and it seems everywhere I went, they were using the one the phone doesn't receive (I'm in southern California, for what it's worth, but tested it on a freeway run up the I-5 to the central part of the state - only got 4G-LTE in a few places). Wound up going back to Verizon
I'm getting the exact same results in Burlington, VT (T-Mobile band 2 market). I first have to manually select T-Mobile (defaults to roaming on AT&T HSPA+) then LTE works for less than a minute (LTE Discovery says band 4) and then I lose signal when I get signal again, I only have edge. It does this constantly and is really annoying.
Aww, bummer. I was thinking about switching to T-Mobile, but looks like that is not a viable option? So no one has been able to successfully use the phone on T-Mobile, even after enabling bands 2 and 4 only?
This whole plethora of LTE bands, where each provider does its own crap is such a mess, is just serves to lock in customers, since switching phones is expensive. Government should mandate that all phones can work on all US LTE bands, the technology exists.
I am on the same boat. Everything works on my VS986 on t-mobile network. but I cannot get the LTE to work properly. LTE discovery shows band 4 (not sure if correct though)

My VRZ LG G4 shows that it has Band 2, 4, 5, and 13. I tried enabling 2 & 4 only, 4 only, 2 only, 2&4&13 only but with no success.
What is interesting is I am coming from VRZ LG G3 and LTE was just fine and never had an issue.
I looked at the VRZ LG G3 LTE bands and I see Band 3,4, and 13 enabled. It did not even have band 2.

I think since someone reported before that this used to work the G3, it sounds like a bug to me. I guess we can hope and pray that this will work in future releases, but there is no guarantee of course. Not sure what complaining to Verizon will do, since they are probably not very interested in you using T-Mobile. Of course, you can always wrap the complaint into something like you are using the phone in a different country on vacation and it doesn't work. Maybe a complaint to the FTC could work too, since it sounds like Verizon is required to have their phones unlocked for use on other networks based on some settlement.

I am tempted to try the guide in here to add more LTE bands:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/general/guide-enabling-lte-bands-t3137818
While some testers said the LTE bands are limited by hardware others reported some success modifying the software. Any thoughts?
i have sprint. in my office LTE band 26 (800MHz) is horrible. whereas LTE band 25 (1900Mhz) and 3G (EHRPD) are decent enough. is there an app or something else i can do to choose LTE band 25 and 3G over band 26? my phone (or PRL) is set up to prefer band 25 over 26 and 26 over 3g and i dont get band 25 almost anywhere in the building so my phone end up mostly on band 26. tasker and automate seem to be no help, and the dialer codes from sprint that could do somethng similar dont work on phones that dont have sprint bloatware. any help would be apreciated

The dialer codes are carrier specific, so this will only work if you are connected to Sprint either directly or through an mvno.

I will tell you. The answer is no. I'm in Korea KT is CDMA. The data side works, UMTS B1 & LTE B1 B2 & B8 but the voice calls do not work. In phone drops even LTE if/when I attempt to make a call. Calls over Wifi isn't an option either since my carrier doesn't support it. Over here everyone uses VOIP anyways. Im not bothered by the lack of calling I rarely even use my 'phone' anyways. Plus I'm hoping to get back to the states soon and I will be back on AT&T.

I purchased the Razer phone and am using Verizon with it. There is a work around that their tier 2 tech team can do. They add your line just on their LTE(GSM) network ( No band 13 CDMA is utilized). So if you are in an area that has good to great LTE signal then you can get the phone. Mine works great at work and outdoors. My only issue is at home. I always had one bar with all my other phones and now I have no service. I am waiting for a Samsung 4g LTE extender from Verizon so that I can correct that issue.
Rumor has it, Verizon will make the shift to just LTE by the end of 2018. If and when this happens, CDMA band and cellphones will no longer work with their network.
Hope I helped anyone who has the phone or wants to buy it. Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays.

I used Verizon's live chat initially. Reason for this is I was able to save the conversation and use it as a reference when I had to call back and got another rep. Also, good way for the tier 2 tech team to catch up. It took some time and persistence to get it right. Once the chat rep exhausts all their troubleshoots, they will escalate it to tier 2. A threat about me leaving and going elsewhere was used on one occasion.
It did take time and patience but I think the phone is worth the trouble. My Razer works just as well as my GS 7 edge. Just a reminder. It is on LTE only, so if you hit an area without LTE you will not function.

I did my own questioning with this and simply stuck my SIM card from my Google phone into my Razer and for while it worked but I noticed it didn't stick.
So I called Verizon and they told me that because my sim card was registered to my Google phone I would need to go and get a new sim and stock it into the Razer and it would then work on LTE and would stick

I did my own questioning with this and simply stuck my SIM card from my Google phone into my Razer and for while it worked but I noticed it didn't stick.

I am going to say no and you should try live chat again. I had ported out when I first got this phone back around Thanksgiving and I couldn't stand it and wanted back in to Verizon. When I came back in, they activated a new sim using a pixel 2, popped it in my phone and did some configs on their end. You do not need a new sim if your current sim is on a phone that has LTE service with same OS and on Verizon already.
What do u have ur settings set to because where I was verison couldn't get it working
With the poor support of the U11 from Verizon, I was worried about the U12+. That is until I found this on their open development site...
It's been certified for all bands, not just 13.
So that screenshot shows the bands that are NOT supported/certified? I'm thinking it should work...they've had on their online sales webpage that the unlocked works on VZW as well.
*The unlocked HTC U12+ is compatible with AT&T, T‑Mobile and Verizon Networks.
whats band 5???

No, this shows that bands that are certified. The U11 is also "compatible" with Verizon, but what they didn't tell you was that it was limited to band 13.

In S. Calif, Band 5 is a new one that you see as often as 2, 4, and 13.
I use a Play Store app called Network Cell Info. While driving, you can see
which band is connected, and on another tab, you can see a map with cell towers as you pass them.
Verizon Variant
Will the unlocked 128GB variant be compatible with Verizon? Specifically will the Verizon Wireless app and the Verizon Cloud app be compatible for this device? Also will the carrier voicemail be compatible? I have heard of some issues with all of these on the U11 which was unlocked but "compatible" with Verizon.

I'm not sure about the apps. I wasn't able to get them on the U11.

Band 5 is cellular 850mhz. Mostly used by Verizon and At&t Nationwide for legacy networks. In the last year or two these frequencies have been getting repurposed for LTE.
My biggest question is will this support Verizon's Wifi Calling as I live in a cell dead spot and also have service issues occasionally at work when in the basement of the building but wifi calling with my HTC 10 has been great for both of those issues, the U11 did not support Verizon wifi calling.
Has anybody picked up a U12+ on Verizon yet? Care to share your experience so far?
My order is released pending fulfillment as of this morning for the Verizon variant 64gb translucent blue.

yeah I'm not sure about that
For those who used the U11 and are now using if not expecting or thinking about getting this phone.
How overall coverage like without CDMA fall back?
Few weeks ago I road tripped around the west coast and parts of the Midwest and LTE coverage was pretty abudano. However there were times were either CDMA was the only thing available for miles or it was simply faster either because LTE was crowded (city) or weak signal where 3G was stronger (rural).
Few examples were driving around Yosemite, South East Oregon, Southern Montana at times, Yellowstone, and Southern Utah.
Thinking back on it I would've had no service for a few hours in places.
After getting my phone yesterday, I'm happy to report that I've seen bands 2, 4, & 13 while driving around.
