Overall speed

Would you say that the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is "fast" in day-to-day use? A higher rating indicates that you think the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 exhibits fantastic performance. Like, is it as fast as your tears when you watch The Titanic?
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

There is noticeable lag due to all of the features you are getting with Touchwiz but otherwise the phone is really fast when restarting and loading apps.

Coming from a note 4 this feels much faster, using apex launcher though I didn't even use touchwiz it copied apex from my note 4 and it just worked.

To properly answer that question I would need to give you comparison devices. Since I don't have a Note 7 I can only tell you how my S7 compares. Not going to sugarcoat it but my iPhone 6S feels much smoother with less hang ups. And even comparing it to my Nexus 6 with Android N beta that 2 year old phone feels like it's running more fluid. It may not be faster in benchmarks but it's the fluidity I'm referring to. But my tiny iPhone SE takes the speed crown. It's running the same processor as its bigger brother but it's pushing less pixels. If it wasn't for the silly iOS animations the speed would be a dream come true.
And that's the big issue I have. If I wasn't such a phone whore on different platforms with the Note 7 being my only device I would tell you that the phone is the quickest. Feature and design wise the Note 7 will be number one for a long time but if you want speed over features the Note 7 is not it. That's between the upcoming 1080p Nexus and iPhones. Those are going to be the fastest devices in real world use.
But maybe dropping the Note 7 resolution down to 1080p could have a huge impact. I did that on my Nexus 6 with no visible impact to screen quality.

Same here but using Nova. Heres how mine compared.

Some apps reload more than I would like and there are stutters in the animations every now and then.
But overall performance is very good.

How does the Note 7 compare to the S7 Edge? I have the Note 4 and the S7 Edge and was thinking about selling my S7E and getting a Note 7. I tend to use my Note 4 more than my S7E due to root and Xposed and the far superior sound output. I just really want a waterproof Note.

the note 7 is definitely slower and less smooth than the oneplus 3. it's not a dealbreaker, but it's something that can't be ignored considering the laggier/slower phone cost literally twice as much as the smoother one. one example is searching within settings or app tray. on my oneplus 3, or huawei p9, or xiami mi 5, results load in real time as i type each alphabet. on the note7? i can finish typing the entire word and then is till have to wait a second or two before results load (especially noticeable when searching in settings). when you tap "recent apps" button on the OP3, everything zips up. on the note 7, it's visibly slower there too.

Less smoother in gaming even compared to the S7 or the P9 Plus

I love how everybody complains how the device is "slow" or "laggy" compared to "insert this years flagship with the same specs here" like, you can't expect a smartphone to double its specs and its performance every 6 month, I certainly don't.
Previously I had an LG G3 which was a great device with a large development community, but it's touchscreen broke.
Currently I'm using an LG G2 mini since april, patiently waiting for the arrival of the note7.
I can understand the people who change as smartphone every year or even every six month, the reason is mainly "because I can".
I wouldn't switch a smartphone unless it was completely unusable including incredibly outdated.
I think your lack of satisfaction with the phone aspects and the price comes from lack of proper comparison.
It's like the difference between driving a Maserati and switching to a Lamborghini
But if you were driving in a 2010 Toyota... the Lamborghini upgrade is going to feel absolutely insane
For me the phone is probably going to feel literally like a Lamborghini, comparing to my LG G2 mini.

The issue Samsung is that I feel they don't pay much attention to detail when it comes to their software. They are def getting alot better at it. But alot of times people equate super high specs with better software smoothness or compatibility, which is not the case! That's why the older model iPhones are many times faster then the brand new Galaxy. If Samsung invests a little more time in their software department and make their phone run as smooth as the Nexus phones they will reign supreme and quickly dethrone Apple.

That's really sad. I have note 5 for 10 months now and it hasn't shown any signs of old phone. Yes sometimes it lags... though I don't remember the last time it lagged.
Maybe the exynos variant is better than snapdragon...

The weird thing with the the Note 7 is that the laggyness is not constant. Sometimes I feel the phone is hyper fast while other times there is a noticeable lag. For example, when you restart your phone it takes a few minutes for the phone to work properly and stop lagging like crazy. Also I noticed that if I don't use the phone for a few hours when I first start using it, it's a little sluggish and slow. However, if I'm using it consistently it tends to get rid of lag and perform faster. It must be a software of system issue that Samsung can probably fix with an update.

I noticed that at times too. Seems to have to wake up. Then fine. I would be willing to bet we see some updates soon. Look we all know Samsung wanted to release before apple. Maybe the software wasn't quite ready. It happens. Overall phone has been fine.

No sign of lag on mine the phones butter smooth.

Nexus 5x- still worth it?

Hello, I am looking for new phone and 5x looks pretty good. I don't need ultra fast CPU for gaming. Just for fluent usage during the day, with a decent battery and good camera quality. Are you satisfied and would you recommend this phone? Does it have some software problems or bugs?

If it had 3 or 4 GB RAM then I wouldn't hesitate. As it stands, it's a little frustrating with multitasking at times. It's quite sporadic where sometimes it seems to hold 3 or 4 apps that you're using in memory without any trouble. Other times you use one app, switch to another, then switch back to the first app and it's gone. I would imagine with a 3GB phone that would not be an issue.
Performance in other ways is just fine without complaints. The Nougat update seems pretty good to me - no major bugs to report and battery life genuinely improved to make it acceptable.

Hello, I am using the nexus 5x for about 7 months now and I am totally satisfied with its performance.I use it mostly for internet(like chat, reading articles, watching videos) but never used it for games. In heavy games it will lag a little but for daily use it is very smooth.The processor is powerful enough for every use except heavy gaming. I tell you in bullets the pros and cons soo you can decide.
Pros:
- Great Camera: Best out there in this budget category and good enough in low light with LED Flash.
- Overall Speed and Smoothness: Google will give you the fastest android experience because of clean Android ROM.
- Updates Until September 2017: Which probably means you will get Android O (8.0) (Nexus 5x was the first phone that had Android Nougat 7.0 installed. And security updates until September 2018. Google will also update all your system apps like phone messages contacts and other so it adds functionality by the time whick is also great.
Cons:
- Battery stamina: It is not quite the best, more like average I would say. I get about 3-4 Hours of Screen on Time. If you use it with 4g it can barely stand out for a day. If you make medium usage you can have 2 days max.
- It gets a little hot quite easy: Especially on summer the phone will heat up really quick if you are on Internet about 5minutes but it won't be a problem cause its stable. The phone will become a little slower in order to low its temperature.
- Wouldn't be bad if it had 3GB of RAM for better multitasking. With 2GB you can have about 3 apps in memory.
Overall: I would say it's a good choice for its money, especially now that you can buy it for almost half the price it had when released.

Given how expensive the just announced Pixels are going to be I would grab a 5X 32G while you can. I'd expect them to be $250USD or less new while you can get new ones. The Pixel's start at $649USD. I plan to use my 5X as long as possible or until I see a significant drop on the Pixel. Not sure if that will happen since it appears Google now believes that they need to convince buyers that phones have to be ridiculously expensive to be considered good.
You can still get them from Google but only through the project Fi page https://fi.google.com/about/phones/ Not sure if Fi is available where you are or not but if it is it can be a great way to go.

I was in the same boat, I didn't mind the price of the new Pixels but IMHO it smells of them going down the Nexus road then deciding to pivot to Pixel. But not having enough time to work with an ODM (like they do with their own servers and switches) and had to go with HTC (since they would be more willing to sell them a version of their phones un-branded). So I'm not a fan of the huge bezels or some of the other missing features. I will wait until next year when they can really design the phone from the ground up and it will be the real Google Pixel. I almost went with Motorola/Lenovo but the unfortunate decisions they have made lately has really turned me off of them. So I was looking for a phone that would last me at least one year and I ran into an great deal on a NIB 32gb 5X so I snapped it up (just got it yesterday).
Yes it's not the best battery life but I lived with a Nexus 5's less then stellar battery life and that was one of my favorite phones. So far I'm very impressed, it's more then good enough and the issues are relatively minor. Very happy with it so far.

What to buy?

I just wanted to ask if you could help me decide which phone to get for Christmas.
I am currently owning a Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 (Mtk) but the lack of development is driving me crazy. It's not a bad phone at all but still sticking to Android 5.0 or 5.1 in times of Android 7.0 is a nightmare for me who loves to have the newest OS for testing.
So my question would be: what phone should I buy with a Budget of maybe 400-450€. Is the oneplus 3 the phone to go with in terms of futureproof Updates or should I go for the Nexus 6p which apparently has a better Screen but only has the SD810 ? What would you buy? Reasons?

I was torn between the two a few weeks ago but went for the OP3 due to its size. :angel:
The 6P is just too big at the end of the day. :crying:
Its a really difficult future to predict. On one hand, you should defiantly go for the 6P due to its instant updates. On the other hand, Google may lessen there support for Nexus devices as there focus has changed with the Pixel. The 3GB of RAM and SD810 is also concerning.
The OP3 is a fantastic phone with blistering performance. If you buy this, you do so accepting that you will always be at least 6 months behind what is happening on the 6P. 2 years down the line however, the tables may turn due to the superior hardware of the OP3.
If you change your phone often, maybe the 6P is the way to go. If you don't, the OP3 is probably a better bet.

Maybe if the rumors are true Oneplus will present the 3+ till the end of the Year and this will lower the price of the 3, but I guess I will go for this phone as its Hardware in comparison to its price is unbeatable and I think the big Community is making the lack of instant Updates good.

Good call Olli,
I'd go for the current OP3 as the OLED screen is really nice and would be better than an LCD especially if they don't upgrade the battery.

That's true even when they would Upgrade to SD821 and 2k Display. Because HD looks just as good.

Those rumors are already confirmed by Carl Pei to be false.
There won't be "refresh" version of OP3, next OP phone will be OP4.
Also OP will stick with AMOLED, they're done with LCD.
About your dilemma: I'd say OP3 is the best option in this price range. Community support is as good as for Nexuses and soon this will matter a lot more than official support.

If you must have Nougat now, go with the nexus. I very much doubt there's a new OnePlus device due any time soon, and even if there was I don't think a significant price cut is on the cards (margins where thin enough to require a £20 rise at the beginning of sterlings collapse).

Is the OP3 performance better than the 6P or is it better than the 6P just because you can leave loads of apps in RAM and therefore have 0 launch time on the OP3?
It does beg the question.......What would a device be like with a SD410 and 16GB RAM? The slow SD410 may not seem slow as all apps could be left in RAM. The SD410 is also excellent when it comes to battery life.

I'm not even taking RAM and app re drawing into account. The OnePlus 3 is noticeably faster (especially the camera app)

I have seen speed test OP3 VS 6P and the OP3 smokes the 6P. This is when you are loading apps initially.

If it doesnt come with the OEM unlock issue the note 8 has (talking about exynos, i dont waste money on crapdragon versions) i will get one.

In all likelihood I'll be going to the S9+ from the Essential PH-1. The Essential was a terrible choice for me but I couldn't justify over $1000 for a pixel 2XL. I'll likely get the S9+ through my carrier. I've gotten quite used to stock Android over the years so a skinned version on the Galaxy will be different. We'll see....

I'll be getting the S9+ at the beginning of 2019, when the price starts to decrease a little. I'll be upgrading from my S7 Edge which just turned a year old few weeks ago.

Dont do it.
I got a S8+ last december and i regretted it. battery was the worst (3,5-4h sot max) and the software lag too annoying. samsung is good for the first 6 months, then they begin to age rapidly
everybody knows that so i had sell my s8+ for a lot less than i bought it for. got me a mate10pro, happy now.
if u want s9 so badly, try to look for second hand around 2 months after launch... i think thats the better choice if you still want to experience the high

I would have to agree on the first part, where Samsung's software does not age beautifully most of the time (my S7 edge thankfully is still running well and has maintained it's fluidity even after a year). Samsung still needs to learn to prioritise on optimisation IMHO. They focused wayy to much on the UI/UX till they forgot about the core system itself.
And yeah. I might also consider going for a second hand S9+ if the reviews don't go according to my expectations. I'll be waiting for MKBHD's (popular tech guy) review and will be watching it the moment it becomes available.

I will agree, upgrading from a s7e is useless, the only reason that can be is a little more processing power, but still it isn't enough, and s7e for me too is running smoothly although there had been issues with build quality, but i really don't think mate 10 is more in performance than s8, maybe in other areas like ui etc it could be. I will pass on s9 and wait until there is a phone with real upgrade not some marketing gimmicks.

True, the mate10pro has exceptional battery life as well as lag free UI though. Before s8 I had a huawei Nexus 6p, had great battery life too (got warranty replacement after 1.5 years with fresh battery) so the s8 kinda feld like a downgrade.
I think the CPU speed is highly overrated nowadays and does not make a real impact on everyday use. (Apples Chip ist supposedly 2x faster than 835 but does the iPhone feel 2x faster?
All in all I upgraded for the bezelless screens... Anything else my Nexus 6p was almost as good at.
Anyone else who has a 2016 flagship (s7e or mate 9 or iPhone 7) should not upgrade for another reason than the larger screens... Anything else in the new phones has only improved a little and does not justify the price in my opinion (unless having the latest tech is part of your lifestyle)

And yes mate 10 got excellent battery life too thanks to its 4000 mah battery, i think every phone should have atleast 4000 mah battery these days,

Well I don't know anyone who is editing video on his phone... That's what I mean with everyday a friend friend of mine has iPhone 8 and it doesn't feel significantly faster in my opinion, it's more about ram keeping apps for running (so you don't actually need to look for launch speed) and internet speed
Yes I think the biggest Upgrade in the future needs to be bigger batteries in order to keep up with the screens and all the other new stuff

You know I have the s7 edge since release, it is still a beast. Can handle any game on the play store, lags here and there. But dont thing upgrading is worth it imo. Maybe when foldable phones come lol

Which custom rom & kernel developers will be getting the S9/S9+ ?
If not, will they be getting the Note 9 instead ?

I think i would be upgrading because this sounds like a perfect replacement for iphone-7. As for performance , I think it depends individual to individual on his config and usage patterns. There are 3 galaxy phones in my house including an aging s6 edge and all seem to be working fine.
Yes, its hard to match iphones in their speed and zero-lag but there are so many trade-offs that purchasing a iphone ahead of a s9 or a note-8 is not a worthy option.

I'm on Galaxy Note 4 and LineageOS 14.1. UHD video recording is not working and I need it. Better low light performance too on S9+. I don't like the curved glass though. I'd also much rather take a removable battery over any kind of IP rating but gotta move along with the times, I guess. I don't undertsand the all-glass exterior idea at all - it's slippery and a protective case is a must, adding to the cost.

Definitely getting an S9 as long as there's no down payment on Jump on Demand. On a v30 now, and the thing is just crap. It stutters - literally. As in the sound stutters and I have to reboot to fix it. It also has all kinds of lag on bluetooth stuff. 8 years on Android and never had anything this bad. Going back to Samsung and not looking at LG for a long time again.

I will stay on my S8 for now... S9 designed so bad... ?

I wouldn't buy a US or Canadian version, the bootloader's will be locked again...total waste of money.
Go exynos for sure, the OEM unlock issue is a helluva alot better to have than have the device be totally locked down.

what's the performance like?

With only 4GB of RAM, is this enough?? I mostly use social media and media consumption such as Netflix mostly however I don't know if this will suffice

its better than my pocophone for real i was skeptical cause of the ram and cpu but as soon as i got the phone i tried the heaviest game i have ever played Silent Hill Shattered Memories on ppsspp emulator for android.And i was surprised how smooth it was smother than the poco ,i made it run on opengl not vulkan mind you cause of that beefy gpu that the pixel has.Navigating is almost a breeze with the new android q beta and i hope it becomes smoother in the next beta.All and all my fav phone to date

I have to say I was worried about the same thing, coming from the OnePlus 6t I knew I was going to make sacrifices. But to be honest this phone is a beast, great battery life, very fluid, great os and cera is top notch . only thing I notice is opening apps is just a hair slower but nothing crazy milliseconds

I always got flagships but then I got this one. It's more than good enough. It only does something a second slower when it comes to photo processing.

Performance is out standing imop. Better than the G7 I had.. Yes the screen resolution is not that great, but then again, I never utilized the different screen settings on my G7.. I also used adb and removed some of the garbage in the phone I don't like or use... I removed the calender, calculator, pixel tips, and 4 things in my phone that had to do with Verizon, on a Sprint phone. I wish I could customize it, but at the time did not know about the retail version being pretty much the same price and the carrier version.

Very good... I came from a Huawei P20 and this is much faster. I've had zero issues with performance.
