I'm deciding whether to get the Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire HD. The one thing that keeps pulling me towards the Fire is Amazon Instant Video(have a larger collection on that service). Has anyone been able to install this app on the Nexus 7?

I'm not aware of an Instant Video app. I am a prime member and can stream to my N7 through my browser (Firefox), but doesn't really look that good (not as good as Netflix). I have a Panny TV that has Viera, and Amazon stream very well on it... I'd much rather watch on a 60" screen than a 7" screen anyway. My 24" PC screen is my second choice. Not a reason to buy or not to buy a particular device. You're pretty much "stuck" with Amazon with a Fire.

Quick answer: not yet, but we'll hack it onto a N7 the way we hack Hulu onto all the devices it 'doesn't support'.
Long answer: Amazon and Google are fighting because amazon makes kindle fires using a forked version of droid (just as the nook does). Amazon cuts Google off from any ad or app revenue by doing that and from having it be included in the number of android tablets on the market in the statistics tech writers publish. Amazon basically isn't being a team player and has decided they'd rather screw android as long as possible without driving them away from shopping there. Amazon wants you to buy a kindle, but the rest of the android world just wants ppl to buy legit versions of android.
If u buy the fire, you won't be able to use the play store, only the amazon app store. However, amazon apps will run on a nexus. The nexus will have more and better updates from Google than your fire will from Amazon. The fire has HDMI out, which is nice, but once Miracast is up, Nexus will be able to do the same thing wirelessly.
You need to decide if one app is enough of a justification to shut yourself off from a true android product. -Ara

I was debating this a few days ago before i purchased the Nexus 7. i decided to go with the Nexus 7 because...well...Google. Hahaha.
but in all seriousness, i didn't even know this about either devices. makes me glad i went with the Nexus. Thanks for all the info!
As a temporary solution you can watch Amazon instant videos using Firefox, the AOSP browser, or Xscope (although I haven't personally tried this one). You just have to install flash and one of the browsers, or be running a rom that includes them. Chrome and Dolphin don't support flash so won't work.

Or, you can just hack your fire and turn it into a android tablet like I did
I'm in a 12 step program for Flashaholics, I relapsed...

And how does that get you closer to using the Amazon instant video app? I'm on the same boat. I'd love to have the fire HD app work on my n7

Hello, I don't know a lot about this as I've never unlocked a device before, but I am reasonably savvy on the PC if given pointers.
I tend to just use the PC (w7-64) when I have time, or my Galaxy S3 when I am about. Recently we bought my daughter a Kindle Fire HDX. Under device model it lists itself as a 3rd Generation.
We however cannot get it to do many of the things we'd like it to do because it cannot use the android store. It's extremely frustrating for her and us. It appears that is because Amazon does not permit it to, even though I unlocked "Apps from Unknown Sources" we are still running into all kinds of blocks.
We dont use the Amazon FreePlay, though it would be nice if that could work if this device ran as a native Android device just in case, but can live without it if not.
I have read Kindle Fire for Beginners ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552547) but the thread is from 2012 and Im not sure how things have changed from the generations of Kindle Fires.
So....
Where do I start?
I need a set of pages (or threads) with walkthroughs for a 3rd gen. Browsing through the site here, I saw a thread for 1st gen devices, and a lot of threads about unbricking from ROMS, Im not sure I fully need a ROM and probably just root permissions, on the other hand a ROM may be nice. One thing I dont have is a lot of time, and if it's too difficult I can sell the Kindle and buy a Samsung tablet at Costco or something. I just hate to waste money though.
Thanks for your time and help!
You need to go to the kindle fire hdx forums.
I bought the Amazon phone partially because of the great price (I was due to renew my prime membership at $99 anyway) and because I am a serious Amazon fan. I switched from an iPhone 5S, where my new favorite feature was Prime Stations. I assumed that the Amazon Fire Phone would support the Amazon Prime Station feature. Well it doesn't. I even used the Mayday feature because I assumed that I had just missed it. They confirmed that the Fire Phone does not support Prime Stations. To make it worse I checked the Google Play store. A standard Android phone CAN download "Amazon Music with Prime Music" that supports Prime Stations. Of course the play stores says that the app is not compatible with my device, great...
I assume that the feature is coming in the near future, but what does that say about Amazon's faith in the Fire Phone? Standard Android phones and iPhones get Prime features before the Amazon Phone. Is this going to be the trend?
Honestly I never noticed that prime stations were missing... I just checked my SGS3 and your right. Kinda a let down but there are many good alternatives out there for the time being.. Though let's be honest I think we all know Amazon doesn't support the fire phone as much as we had hoped. Though the low sales numbers are more than likely to blame. As happy as I am with the current update most of us would have probably expected Lollipop at this point.

yeah. I had an iPhone for a bit and I switched over before you could just click a song and listen to it. When I first got my fire phone you still had to add it to the library before listening. That was weird. I don't doubt the update will come soon but I do hate that they don't update the fire phone apps before other apps. They should support their own hardware first!!!
Amazon finally released an update to Prime Music with the Prime Stations function.
I have 3 Fire TVs all have the same Amazon Account since I have Prime. However if I watch a series like Braking Bad in one Fire TV and my wife watches Breaking Bad in the other Fire TV, we always run with the problem that I start watching were she left off and she starts watching where I left off, basically ruining the series for me since she is 3 seasons ahead. Is there a way like Netflix and it's profiles within Amazon Prime that I can use to split my Amazon Prime account. Any feedback is appreciated. I don't see why I would need to pay another account to fix this. And yes I have Kodi but some series are in Prime and load faster there.
What are the technical reasons that make it impossible to root the Fire TV Stick 2?
I was just wondering the exact same thing. I have a brand new, never been plugged in to anything Gen 2 that I wanna do something with. Everytimei start looking at specs and such I end up at other devices that their is root for Examples Kindle FIre 7" I believe about a week ago it was the Nexus 5 I was led to. I guess I can debloat it or something but thats boring.
According to this page, the Fire TV Stick 2 is impossible to root. @aftvnews is very knowledgeable, so I don't doubt it. I just want to know why it's unrooteable and learn some.
