I'm just curious here. If AMOLED displays benefit from a solid black background, but live wallpapers drain the battery, then would a solid black live wallpaper save or drain battery? Or somehow balance out?
Sent from my SM-T700 using Tapatalk
Why use a live wallpaper if it`s solid black, just use a black wallpaper, I use a virtually black wallpaper with a low brightness pattern to it.
Below is the wallpaper i use, I also added a totally black wallpaper.
I attached a zip file of the wallpaper as Imgur is resizing the images i have posted.
John.
EDIT: These are in Landscape mode for the 10.5" so might not work on the 8.4" Portrait display without problems.

Every time I've used a solid black wallpaper I get this fade into gray at the bottom and gray bar at the top. This live wallpaper I have is 100% black on the entire screen.

Strangely I get this too even when using nova launcher but only on the home screen, not on the recent apps ect, I'll try this live wallpaper. Any idea on how to fix it in general, I mean it should turn the pixels off because its black but it seems to stay on.

I still haven't found any fix. Yea, the pixels would be off but I assume it being a live wallpaper that there's some sort of coding that would continue to run.

Possiby a hardware issue then. Pixels not completely turning off? What happens when the tablet rotates does the grey bar remain in the same position?
Does the same thing happen with a screen shot or live display only.?

Gray bars still present at top and bottom (rotates with device) and not the sides like you might expect if it were a hardware issue. Took a screenshot and viewed it on my laptop. Gray bar present at the bottom but not the top. Forgot to mention that it isn't a solid bar. More like a gradient going from black to gray.

Wouldn't this mean then that the wallpaper simply isn't filling the entire screen?
Try the free app 'simple image wallpaper pro' to apply your wallpaper and select the fill screen option.
I doubt it. I've used a 9000x9000 image before with the same result. I'll give that app a try though.
Edit: That app is also a love wallpaper though. I'm already using the live wallpaper app "no wallpaper" and it works fine. It's a solid black with no gray bars or anything. It's only solid black static images that give me grief.

But its not actually a live wallpaper is it? Its only the app that is implemented as a live wallpaper to make it work. The image applied is still static.

See, I wasn't sure how live wallpapers worked. I didn't know if there would be some kind of code continuously running in the background. Still don't understand why the gray bars are only there on static images but not on live wallpapers.

I don't remember if I actually tried or not, but I tried today anyway. I created my own in paint and paint.net and neither worked. Still got the bars. No solid black wallpaper will work unless it is implemented through a live wallpaper app.
This issue only occurs on Lollipop. Just flashed KitKat through Odin and applied a solid black image as the background. The entire screen is black!
The list of small problems with the beta 5.0.2 version of lollipop the S1 received, that`s why i stayed on KitKat and was looking forward to MM once it`s reliability was proven.

I'm not happy with Lollipop one bit. Too many users with the same issues but different fixes, if any. V4A driver installation and deodexing were never consistent for me and the white UI colors are fugly. On KitKat; Xposed doesn't require dexodex, V4A driver installation is dependent solely on copying a file from one location to another, and it has the dark UI. Also, I can finally set a black image as my wallpaper without having grey bars at the top and bottom of the screen.
Sent from my SM-T700 using Tapatalk
The dark UI on KitKat was a big reason for my sticking with it, also i had KitKat running for over 300 days continually with no shutdowns reboots crashes or any other problems, it`s solid as a rock, and was almost perfect after rooting and installing the microsd write fix.
I am only interested in MM for the HEVC video/movie hardware playback support as i am unable to play them at the moment, some MM CM13 rom have been reported to playback HEVC videos perfectly without killing the battery, but there is not one for the T800 or i would have flashed it by now.
I have never flashed a rom on my T800 so my knowledge is limited.
John.
I almost forgot about the KK SD card fix! I'll be installing that in a bit. Playback of video files isn't a big deal for me since I never watch my own. I only use streaming services for video.

Click Here For 4.0.4 Test Version
Introduction
Here is a version of the stock ICS/GN launcher modded to remove the search bar and reclaim that space in portrait mode by providing a 4x5 grid. The search bar is hidden, the grid is increased to 4x5 and the margins are all adjusted to compensate.
Compatibility
Version 3.0 is for ROM's prior to 4.0.3 (includes landscape support)
Verison 4.0 is for ROM's with Android 4.0.3 or later (landscape support coming soon)
Features:
Google search bar removed from home screen
Search still works as expected
Choose 3, 5 or 7* (*experimental) home screens!
Great with Paul's search button mod available here
4x5 grid enabled in portrait mode to reclaim the search bar space
Vertical grid height reduced slightly to accommodate 5 rows
Landscape (where available) remains 4x4 (4x5 doesn't fit without scaling) so bottom row is chopped off (gracefully)
Transparent folders by Evostance included in version 4 and up!

Launcher Tweaking Instructions
The method to achieve this mod with the stock launcher is substantially more complex since Android 4.0.3 so I've provided some instructions in the document linked below. I can't promise these will stay relevant and you need to have some pre-existing knowledge before you can start but they should help.
Tweaking the ICS Launcher (xda post)
If this helps you also, then consider hitting 'Thanks' below.
so far so good. i'm not too keen on auto rotation of launchers, but otherwise i'm quite pleased with it. on other launchers it's still a 4x4 grid, which i'm sure you know. i like having that extra space personally, though. thanks
also, will let you know if i run into any issues.
edit: def a little tight at the top, btw.
edit: actually, after loading the Google Voice widget, it sits at the top just like on my SGS2. BUT, there's still room on the left and right, unlike how it was on the SGS2. it just filled up an entire square. so possibly decrease the side margins i'm thinking.

I already got the initial one lets see just restarted it the phone after replacing launcher2.apk via root explorer I was on adw. Now I will go back to the launcher more to follow.
looks good.. thanks!! always good stuff, especially from the n1 days..
using villainrom on francos kernal. margins are a bit tight, but theyve always been with launchers with 5 rows.
would it be possible to have a 5x5 grid?
Would it work with other phone's or just for this phone ?

He had a file original which is the one I have flashed, while he fixes the link try using the one here.
How I got it to work was. I had the ADW Launcher EX bought it for .10 cent.
Then went via root explorer renamed the original launcher
And then pasted this there.
Rebooted and wallah!

np! yeah just a few pixels too tight at the top, maybe 4. and increase side margins by at least 8 on each side would be my guess
Oops! Sorry!
Doh!
Sorry for the link error guys, now fixed in the first post. Thanks to those that helped out in the interim.
I realise there are margin problems, I will look into these tomorrow. Consider this first release a proof of concept.
I can do 5x5, I have had that running but until I fix the margins then 5x5 looks really bad (icons in columns 1 and 5 are cut in half). The problem is that the icon spacing is set to absolute values for 4x4 this is why we also have a problem for the 5 rows at the moment.
No promises but I think we can get perfect 4x5 (portrait) and possibly perfect 5x5 (portrait).
I will not spend a lot of time on landscape however, I never use that.

yup simiclock and then a bunch of alterations inside. Background color all zeros then text all black with a bit of alpha and that's it. Simple yet elegant I like it. I used to use fancy widgets but now this.

Having a look at that tomorrow. Either really easy or damn hard...
A lot of people have been asking me how I made my setup, so I'm going to make a simple guide as to how to make it. It's easier than it looks, specially now that I'm helping you!
This concept was not originally mine, and I don't take credit for it. But I made it my way and I had permission to borrow his concept of control layout
This is how it turned out //

NOW Let's Start!
Apps you need //
Minimalistic Text
Palmary Weather Premium or Something similar
I was using Nova Launcher/AOKP B25/Black Nexus by Nitro
No Search Bar - 6x5 Grid
*Note that all of the minimalistic text is bottom aligned vertically and as well as all of them have a static “1spacebar” before the actual time/date/etc.
ie. time has [1space][hour][:][minutes][am/pm]
SCREEN 1
Minimalistic WIDGET SIZE = 3 × 2 – time – 122 dip size // PM/AM – 40 dip size
Minimalistic WIDGET SIZE = 2 x 1 – date – 40 dip size
Put the date on the 2ND ROW of the screen from the top and leave the top part of the screen blank
PALMARY WIDGET - 4 X 2 - Then resize to 5 x 3 fill the middle part
Minimalistic WIDGET SIZE = 2 × 1 – battery – 75 dip size
Bottom part of the screen
3 blank icons to place on the right side
ie phone app / messaging app / folder
SCREEN 2
Minimalistic WIDGET SIZE = 3 × 1 – memory – 55 dip size
To the right side, 2nd row again, leave top part of screen blank.
SWITCHPRO WIDGET - SIZE 4 - then resize to 3 x 1 to fit the wallpaper design
Picture Gallery widget - 5 x 3 - resize to fit the wallpaper design
Minimalistic WIDGET SIZE = 2 × 1 – battery temp is 72 dip size
Bottom left part of the screen
AGAIN
3 blank icons to place on the right side
ie phone app / messaging app / folder
Download the SETUP.zip I have attached and copy the Minimalisticpreference and fonts folder in your sdcard.
The images, distribute where you keep your wallpaper/graphics as well as the softkeys folder if you want them.
*For the softkeys, you will have to use ninjamorph and do it manually because I have no clue how to make a zipthemer or metamorph file.
Apply the wallpaper first and make sure you have the 6x5 grid already applied and have 2 screens instead of 5.
Start applying the widgets (LOOK AT THE SIZES ABOVE) and instead of laying them out manually just restore the preferences I made.
Now for the "Navigation" part of the wallpaper, you can replace that with whatever app you want. I have included a link to the .psd so you can update it.
*Note that I didn't clean up the PSD so you will have to figure it out yourself
IF and WHEN you are done with the navigation part, use the blank.png I included as the new icon for each app you have to make it transparent.
I hope by this time you already have it setup.
ONCE you have this setup, you will have an understanding as to how I layed it out and NOW you can START CUSTOMIZING YOUR OWN
Good Luck!
Please post screenshots of yours here so I can see the results

Looks cool.
I wanted to try it but it would be nice if you'd include a little more detailed instructions as how to set this thing up for us - lazy n00bs.
I mean if I put the wallpaper images on the SD and then try to apply the wallpaper thru Gallery, it wants me to crop the image, which will end up over or undercropped so it won't fit the screen precisely.
Also I couldn't figure out how to restore the minimalistic preferences you've made.
So I gave up.
Maybe make a backup of your nova home screen and upload it? I don't know of that'd work though

Alright, I added my nova launcher backup, hopefully that works...Also inside the folders, I included different color schemes for the wallpaper and Lockscreen...
ie. orange, red, yellow, etc.
For some reason, xda wouldn't accept the zip even though it's less than 11 mb. anyways, here are the files...Hopefully it works this time...
extra.zip
lockscreen.psd
Make sure that you are using AOKP rom and have 2 screens using nova launcher FIRST. Then maybe once you understand the layout, you can customize it.
IF for some reason the wallpaper isn't properly working just apply it and reboot, nova launcher is weird that way.

Thanks for your help. I couldnt get your preferences to work, so I just went ahead and did the configuration. Doesnt look as good as yours, but not bad considering I'm using a G2X running CM7. LMK what you think.
Lockscreen- CM7 w/ gestures and music controls (no widget)
Homescreen- Beautiful weather, Minimalistic text, launcher pro, CM7 "crystal" theme, Multipicture live wallpapers (had to split your wallpaper into two screens to fit my smaller device properly)
Second Screen- Still not sure what to do here, I dont really need a power widget bc it is in my drop-down menu, maybe I'll add the temp and space, but for now I gotta get back to (real)work!
Thanks a lot for the wallpapers and ideas! I found this thread via Mycolorscreen btw

HI all, and I hope i'm posting in the right area for this.
My first android phone is the LG G3 which I just received several weeks ago. As you can see from the included picture I've started enjoying some of the customizable options. I ran across one problem though and haven't had much luck searching google for a solution or even knowing what to search for.
As you can see from the picture, the white icon square which I've circled has a dark gradient applied to the bottom of it. The LG G3 OS seems to apply this gradient by default to every icon I create. The only way Ive tried to get around it is by creating reverse gradient icons in Photoshop but that limits my color choices.
You can see the image for my phone screen over at nathanstann dot com / screenshotforxda.jpg (Was trying to get up to ten posts but since Im new most of what I got to say is pretty useless and this question doesn't make much sense without a pic so...)
My next logical step was to root the phone and use tweaksbox. However, I thought I'd ask the question here as a last ditch effort before rooting the phone for such a trivial purpose.
Im quite happy with the stock LG G3 launcher as it is right now in terms of how it performs except for this one cosmetic issue which is hindering my flat tile design vision. All the design you see here was just done by changing out the icon's images with my own photoshop designed icons.
My question is, does anyone know how to disable the dark shadowed gradient that the LG G3 overlays onto the icons? It seems to me it has to be at least accessible on the launcher level as third party launchers are free of this effect. So it led me to think that maybe I could somehow edit the launcher itself ? I don't know its new to me and a little over my head so Im just thinking out loud.
Anyone with tips or experience would be amazing!.
Looking forward to learning more from this community.
I don't see a screenshot.

Without changing launcher and icons its probably not possible unless someone smart spends time on it.
The stock launcher is pretty crap for me anyways.

True. I changed all the icons within the stock icons, but ya i didnt actually find a third party launcher i liked as much as stick curiously enough.
BTW I noticed your phone is rooted from your sig. Do you happen know for sure if you can get rid of all those shadow gradients on the bottom of home screen icons with a root access app tweakbox?

Yes i am rooted on 5.0 Chuppa Chub Rom, i use Nova launcher with custom icons, i have NO shadows whatsoever.

I have seen your screenshot, i have no idea how you made those tiles using stock rom, maybe desktop visualizer?

Thanks for that info!
As far as my icons, I just made .png files in Photoshop to the exact pixel dimensions and then imported them to my phone and set the .png images as the icon image using the function to replace icons within the stock launcher. The only 'fly in the ointment' and the reason I made this thread was the fact that by default the pone seems to overlay a shadow gradient at the bottom as can bee sen on the white 'tile' icon. My guess is this was done to help bring out the text label on a normal sized icon but unfortunately on my custom made 'tile' type icons it make the bottoms of my nice flat squares seem curved and destroys the simplicity.
Funny you should mention desktop visualizer because I was just looking at that app a few minutes ago. Actually it had been one of my ideas from a few days ago, where I noticed the shadow gradient was not on the widgets. I immediately thought, well if I could creat widgets linked to shortcuts then I mught circumvernt this issue. So I was certainly interested to come across desktop visualizer a few moments ago which will enable me to make widget shortcuts easily. SO that might be a viable alternative to explore.
Of course a bug reason I wish to stay with the stock launcher , as an aside, is i use the knock on /knock off feature a lot and I was under the impression third party launchers removed that functionality.
I am using Knock on AND off with Nova Launcher.
Get this app installed, and set gesture "double tap" to launch it.

Even better get Greenify and set double tap gesture to "hibinate apps and lock screen"
Hope this helps.
right on. thats a cool workaround! Thanks for the heads up on that one.
Wanted to post an update on my progress so far.
I have explored using 'desktop visualizer' which is an app that allows you to create custom widgets of any size and overlay them with your choice of photo. transparency is also supported so it opens up possibilities in that design as well.
This alleviates the issue of gradient shadows being applies to home screen icons, as the LG G3 OS deosn't apply shadows or gradients to wiidgets.
The only downside I have found from this method is the inability to save your setup reliably and may result in having to redesign your screen if your battery runs out.
As I am nearing the ten post mark I look forward o sharing my latest design both in this thread and over in the LG G3 home screen exhibit thread.
As promised, heres a screenshot of what Ive been able to come up with so far using the stock LG launcher and the help of a couple widget creators

So I recently noticed that black horizontal bars have been appearing when a dark image is displayed. I have a dark theme applied onto TW and when the keyboard is opened onto a white-ish background I see them. This also occurs when I'm viewing certain dark images. And also even the Yahoo shortcut icon in Samsung Internet app shows a feint purple bar beneath it. Is this most likely a defect in hardware? I bought this from Samsung Canada and I don't know how they deal with these kinds of things will they replace it.....

Just get it checked with your Samsung asap. I don't know for sure whether it is defected or software problem or what, or will replace or fix or whatever. But if you're curious, check with THEM.
Having looked for a solution and found nothing besides one post on reddit. Photo Here
There is that grey gradient that will cover the top half of the lockscreen. I can't find any way to remove this, or any lockscreen theme to remove it.
I cant be the only one is bothers, If anybody has a solution to this please share.

Are you using a theme of some kind? It looks like maybe some kind of theme is coloring your notifications Pitch Black, while the rest of the lock screen remains a little bit brighter.

Yes, I am using a theme to make the notifications black. However if they are white, that background gradient is still there.

Oh, I see...
Maybe download a solid pitch black image, and set it as your wallpaper, on the lock screen only..?

Just noticed this has started happening with my 3 week old phone. I think the screen is faulty as there's quite a light bleed at the top of the screen in safe mode.

If you are on 8.1 it's a "feature".
