[Q] icon shadow removal on lg g3 home screen - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

HI all, and I hope i'm posting in the right area for this.
My first android phone is the LG G3 which I just received several weeks ago. As you can see from the included picture I've started enjoying some of the customizable options. I ran across one problem though and haven't had much luck searching google for a solution or even knowing what to search for.
As you can see from the picture, the white icon square which I've circled has a dark gradient applied to the bottom of it. The LG G3 OS seems to apply this gradient by default to every icon I create. The only way Ive tried to get around it is by creating reverse gradient icons in Photoshop but that limits my color choices.
You can see the image for my phone screen over at nathanstann dot com / screenshotforxda.jpg (Was trying to get up to ten posts but since Im new most of what I got to say is pretty useless and this question doesn't make much sense without a pic so...)
My next logical step was to root the phone and use tweaksbox. However, I thought I'd ask the question here as a last ditch effort before rooting the phone for such a trivial purpose.
Im quite happy with the stock LG G3 launcher as it is right now in terms of how it performs except for this one cosmetic issue which is hindering my flat tile design vision. All the design you see here was just done by changing out the icon's images with my own photoshop designed icons.
My question is, does anyone know how to disable the dark shadowed gradient that the LG G3 overlays onto the icons? It seems to me it has to be at least accessible on the launcher level as third party launchers are free of this effect. So it led me to think that maybe I could somehow edit the launcher itself ? I don't know its new to me and a little over my head so Im just thinking out loud.
Anyone with tips or experience would be amazing!.
Looking forward to learning more from this community.

I don't see a screenshot.

the screenshot addy is kind of spelled out in the post :/ But I PM'd you so you could see. Noticed you got over 10 posts feel free to post it up in here if ya want.
wish I had more to offer in the forums to get my post count up but just trying to get my feet wet with this issue I posted about.

Without changing launcher and icons its probably not possible unless someone smart spends time on it.
The stock launcher is pretty crap for me anyways.

True. I changed all the icons within the stock icons, but ya i didnt actually find a third party launcher i liked as much as stick curiously enough.
BTW I noticed your phone is rooted from your sig. Do you happen know for sure if you can get rid of all those shadow gradients on the bottom of home screen icons with a root access app tweakbox?

Yes i am rooted on 5.0 Chuppa Chub Rom, i use Nova launcher with custom icons, i have NO shadows whatsoever.

I have seen your screenshot, i have no idea how you made those tiles using stock rom, maybe desktop visualizer?

Thanks for that info!
As far as my icons, I just made .png files in Photoshop to the exact pixel dimensions and then imported them to my phone and set the .png images as the icon image using the function to replace icons within the stock launcher. The only 'fly in the ointment' and the reason I made this thread was the fact that by default the pone seems to overlay a shadow gradient at the bottom as can bee sen on the white 'tile' icon. My guess is this was done to help bring out the text label on a normal sized icon but unfortunately on my custom made 'tile' type icons it make the bottoms of my nice flat squares seem curved and destroys the simplicity.
Funny you should mention desktop visualizer because I was just looking at that app a few minutes ago. Actually it had been one of my ideas from a few days ago, where I noticed the shadow gradient was not on the widgets. I immediately thought, well if I could creat widgets linked to shortcuts then I mught circumvernt this issue. So I was certainly interested to come across desktop visualizer a few moments ago which will enable me to make widget shortcuts easily. SO that might be a viable alternative to explore.
Of course a bug reason I wish to stay with the stock launcher , as an aside, is i use the knock on /knock off feature a lot and I was under the impression third party launchers removed that functionality.

I am using Knock on AND off with Nova Launcher.
Get this app installed, and set gesture "double tap" to launch it.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock
Even better get Greenify and set double tap gesture to "hibinate apps and lock screen"
Hope this helps.

right on. thats a cool workaround! Thanks for the heads up on that one.

Wanted to post an update on my progress so far.
I have explored using 'desktop visualizer' which is an app that allows you to create custom widgets of any size and overlay them with your choice of photo. transparency is also supported so it opens up possibilities in that design as well.
This alleviates the issue of gradient shadows being applies to home screen icons, as the LG G3 OS deosn't apply shadows or gradients to wiidgets.
The only downside I have found from this method is the inability to save your setup reliably and may result in having to redesign your screen if your battery runs out.
As I am nearing the ten post mark I look forward o sharing my latest design both in this thread and over in the LG G3 home screen exhibit thread.

As promised, heres a screenshot of what Ive been able to come up with so far using the stock LG launcher and the help of a couple widget creators

So, being my first theme building endeavor... this isn't nearly as elaborate as other themes that have been posted on here... but having used Openhome avidly I really really was cravin an Amazing Spider-Man skin and thus was inspired to build one of my own.
Changed the menu, and almost all of the default icons. It's not COMPLETELY done yet. I'm still hoping to mod the clock but have yet to figure that out (will update on this thread once I have).
I'd def like any feedback anyone might have for me. enjoy! =)

oh nice! Not too shabby for a first try. I like the thing you picked for the pull up tab altho I would recommend you do something with the status bar. Maybe like a dark grey with webbing or something but ya i like it.
On an unrelated note though, how'd you manage to change the background for the apps tray?
how did the clock turn out? Care to show a screenshot?
yep. took me a couple hours to perfect the image =) It's not the fanciest clock but I'm pretty happy w/ how it turned out =)
Cleanin up the wallpaper (to remove the reference bar near the bottom from the image) then I'll be posting an update =)

pattern_carbon_fiber_dark.png in the Launcher.apk =). Jus pulled artwork of Spidey w/ that webbing in the background and cut and pasted into a 120x120 square, replacing the old file w/ my new one =).
I'll prolly delve into the status bar next. Otherwise I'd be just about done and I've been keeping myself so busy w/ this over the last couple of days I don't know what I'd do w/ myself if I were done lol.
as far as the menu bar goes (and a lot of the icons)... this took the most time cuz I extracted most everything from larger pictures and had to outline what I wanted and make the surrounding border translucent =) Didn't have the black border @ the top of the menu @ first and took some time to add it to the bottom of the menu bar image. Definitely looked a lot better after I did that =)
Ohhhh thats where that file is. Well thanks for that! Haha and ya theming sorta just destroys your life once you start. Badass clock too btw.

Thanks man! =) I love themeing though =) It's a great time killer and it pushes my multitasking skills to their max at times. I have a pretty good system developed and work at a pretty healthy pace. Got 4 different folders on my desktop I use, one for the extracted ROM file, the other for the extracted apk, and a second pair for an original ROM and APK if I'm trying to check the unaltered source for one reason or another =)
here's the newest revision w/ the clock and a cleaned up wallaper =) I'll prolly start messin around w/ the status bar in a lil bit =)
http://www.mediafire.com/?0oymgjtnizk
lost my battle w/ trying to perfect the art of properly editing the .9.png files. Thus incorporated VK and Music widget elements created by a couple other developers and am waiting for their OK to include them in an update.
Messed w/ the status bar as well which I'm really happy w/. =)
Once I hear back from them as to whether theyre cool w/ me including their work or not, I'll post the update including this status bar and those elements. =)
i like this. looks very comicy/classic... but what ever happen to the pull up try doing something when selected? maybe a web is on it when u select it? also a custom status bar would be cool.
i love it bro i wish i knew what was necissary for doing a theme but everything just seems like a whole lot of mumbo jumbo when i look at the different kinds of files and crazyness that goes into making a theme. i have the ideas just lack the experience.
your status bar and your clock are great bro i could only wish when i do decide to figure out how to make a theme it comes out as good as yours bro. great job. Im sure your themes will be among the nastiest when you get going.

Status bar is actually modded (scope the picture from my last post). It'll be posted w/ a new red on black VK and hopefully a skinned music widget once I hear back from the dev who made the images for the music widget. Not wanting to use anyone's work w/ out their consent. I straight gave up in trying to adjust the batch.9.pngs (ie what the music widget and VK are built on). Spent way too much time and ultimately accomplished nothing. Was so frustrated.
Working on the notifications next...
I might still do something w/ the menu tab. Isolating a good web by itself is a LOT more challenging than I originally thought it would be ha ha.

Thanks man =) I totally relate when it comes to the comprehension thing actually. I can edit image files and replacethem w/ in the framework to no end. But when it came down to editing the batch 9.pngs it was straight up foreign and a half to me and I couldn't pull it off. =) That's why I haven't posted it up w/ the status bar yet... I'm waitin to hear from a cat who's music player widget I'd like to include in it. Prolly be postin an update tonight sometime.
Aight. All finished =) couple updated Screenshots -
changed up the clock boarder to match the status bar -
Also changed the background color in the notification bar -
Much thanks goes to diaztradeinc and Jrbourque for allowing me to use their VK in the theme! =)
In wanting a darker skinned music widget, I compiled the default music widget from Haykuro's G builds and colored the controls to match =)
and finally, I changed up the color in the menu bar when pressed and selected w/ the cursor
Enjoy! =)
gah... corrupt file in the ROM =L resigning and re uploading... I'll repost w/ the new link in a few mins
There we go. Jus uploaded, downloaded and flashed the ROM. No errors this time through. it's all good so here it is =)

good job man, keep it up
Aight. i realized something that might cause a HUGE limitation for some cats w/ this theme. I built it using the non-A2SD ROM for H1.5... soooo here's the A2SD version for you app lovin cats

Thanks again goes to JrBourque & Diaztradeinc for their great VK work. I compiled the blue keyboard into the A2SD version

Unfortunitely not. No theme template existing for Haykuro's 1.5 (that I know of/have been able to find), I built this using the whole firmware ROM itself. So if you were to flash it you'd be on Hv1.5 instead. It ain't a bad build at all though. Completely solid and has the multi-touch of JFs build. The t9 predictive keypad in portrait mode, and the severe lack of themes for Haykuro's 1.5 (in comparison to how many JF themes there seem to be) is mostly what keeps me on his version.
There is a chance though that BetterAndroid might publish it as an Openhome skin once Cupcake has been pushed to consumer phones (which is starting at the end of this week continueing through the end of the month).
So if that happens you could always run it as an Openhome skin.

[Theme] MarksTheme for CyanogenMod Rom

New thread for cyanogen 4.2.1 HERE
I've called this 'MarksTheme' because I'm Mark, and I made most of this theme.
I say 'most' because I took some from Enoch and EnochX, some from m_blend (loving the red), and added a load of my own Icons. Credits to the makers of both, particularly drpfenderson maker of Enoch and EnochX which got me started I don't mess with the code, I just add my own optimised png's that I think look good and are optimised to load fast.
The wallpaper you see in the screenshots isn't included, it's one of my photographs (I do that kind of photography for a living).
I will tweak and play with this whenever the mood takes me and time allows. I will update for each new cyanogen release and files are named thus:
MarksTheme-cyanogen version number.my version revision (a, b, c, etc).zip
for example MarksTheme-4.0.4.a.zip
is for cyanogenROM version 4.0.4 and is my revision 'a'.

very nice! colors and icons are amazing. great job
not sure how the posting "laws" are around here, but i think they might make you take off the screenshots cause of the lady in the background lol
and also! i cant tell if you have themed any of the google apps, but if you did! i think it would be much appreciated if you warned people about those apps being themed. because in my experience the only way that actually works well to restore them is to do the whole htc image recovery flash again, and wipe, and thats a pain. if it doesnt, then ignore this part of my post..

My wallpaper is just one of my photographs, one I like and it works great for this, but it's not in the theme, I hope the admins are ok with it, if not I'm sure they'll let me know and I'll redo the screenshots.
i flashed this theme to see what it was like and i have to say this, it is amazing.
things that really stick out.
1. the boot animation is really great and active. i like how each row is right after the one above it (flash it to see what i mean)
2. the icons for the apps in here are beautiful, where did you find them, or did you make them? if you made them, amazing work man.
3. the notification bar is top notch. none of the icons look out of place. they are all put together really well.
4. the widgets look great, i love how the power control widget looks with the wallpaper i have for this (screen shot attached because i think it looks that great.)
5. the launcher tab is simple and elegant.
there is only one thing i can say about this that i would change, which is a very minor thing. i would change the look of the background in the app drawer. like i said that is the only thing and it is amazingly small.
this is a beautiful and professional looking theme Mark, i look forward to what else you will bring to the theme-ing table.
how much is themed? are the google apps themed? i like this one too but i dont want my phone to slow down, or to ahve to deal with themed google apps again. and if you liked it, its gotta be good! lol
Great to have some positive feedback! thanks David!
Some of the apps icons are left overs from enochx, I'm changing alot of them for my own but most of them are already my own work. I've been working on this for months in my spare time.
The background for the app drawer is pretty much a standard carbon-fibre pattern I've seen on alot of themes, maybe all of them, I've tried different opacities and making it lighter and darker, which direction would you like to see with that?

yes, some google apps are themed, the whole theme is dark so the apps need changing for that, I personally rework market, gmail, email, I think thats all thats covered, you could always download the zip and remove the apk's from the apps you don't want to be changed (might have some issues with the aforementioned dark/light, also some will be changed by the frameworkAPK).
which apps are you concerned about?
I hate a slow theme too which is kept very much in mind, I even optimize every png for fast loading.

i think it is just the stock one from 1.5/1.6 firmware. i think a dark one with mabye a 5 or 10 percent transparency would look great, but this is your theme, so whatever you want to use man.
the icons do look amazing and it shows that you have spent time on them. they look very professional and top notch. all of them, the ones in the notification bar, the app icons, the ones that appear in various pop ups.
this theme is beautiful mark! must say, very well done.
if you start getting alot of requests for the advanced launcher... which people can get relentless about... you can add it as advancedlauncher.apk and keep the launcher.apk as well. allowing users their choice.
would you mind if i used your status bar icons in my plastic theme? they're absolutely beautiful, and i think they'd go well with my theme

Honestly, no idea, I've not tried the .9999 version myself, the 4.1.11.1 works fine I know that much, mostly I just ad my own image files, I'm not a coder so can't help further.
Most of the .9999 is enochx, I changed most of the .png's to my own, you could try the enochx and if thats fine then it's my bad, if not it's not
Mark, thats a really nice theme you got there.. only thing I dont like if you dont mind me saying is the battery icon.. I have come to LOVE the battery icon in Kspec Oreo.. might be worth looking at that??

The circular one? thats a real nice battery icon.
I'm going to stick with the one I have for now, you could always add the oreo one to my theme, if you don't know how I may take the time to do it as a one-off if I'm in a super-good mood (which I will be once my model finally shows up so I can get some work done!).
OK Mark, I added the battery and resigned.. installed fine, thanks.. nice skin

[MOD] Stock Launcher | No Search Bar | 4x5 Portrait Grid | 4.0.4 Test Version Avail!

Click Here For 4.0.4 Test Version
Introduction
Here is a version of the stock ICS/GN launcher modded to remove the search bar and reclaim that space in portrait mode by providing a 4x5 grid. The search bar is hidden, the grid is increased to 4x5 and the margins are all adjusted to compensate.
Compatibility
Version 3.0 is for ROM's prior to 4.0.3 (includes landscape support)
Verison 4.0 is for ROM's with Android 4.0.3 or later (landscape support coming soon)
Features:
Google search bar removed from home screen
Search still works as expected
Choose 3, 5 or 7* (*experimental) home screens!
Great with Paul's search button mod available here
4x5 grid enabled in portrait mode to reclaim the search bar space
Vertical grid height reduced slightly to accommodate 5 rows
Landscape (where available) remains 4x4 (4x5 doesn't fit without scaling) so bottom row is chopped off (gracefully)
Transparent folders by Evostance included in version 4 and up!

Version 4 (for 4.0.3 and above ROMs)
No Landscape Support Yet!

Launcher Tweaking Instructions
The method to achieve this mod with the stock launcher is substantially more complex since Android 4.0.3 so I've provided some instructions in the document linked below. I can't promise these will stay relevant and you need to have some pre-existing knowledge before you can start but they should help.
Tweaking the ICS Launcher (xda post)
If this helps you also, then consider hitting 'Thanks' below.
so far so good. i'm not too keen on auto rotation of launchers, but otherwise i'm quite pleased with it. on other launchers it's still a 4x4 grid, which i'm sure you know. i like having that extra space personally, though. thanks
also, will let you know if i run into any issues.
edit: def a little tight at the top, btw.
edit: actually, after loading the Google Voice widget, it sits at the top just like on my SGS2. BUT, there's still room on the left and right, unlike how it was on the SGS2. it just filled up an entire square. so possibly decrease the side margins i'm thinking.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll do a non-rotating one tomorrow if I get time after looking at the margins.

I already got the initial one lets see just restarted it the phone after replacing launcher2.apk via root explorer I was on adw. Now I will go back to the launcher more to follow.
looks good.. thanks!! always good stuff, especially from the n1 days..
using villainrom on francos kernal. margins are a bit tight, but theyve always been with launchers with 5 rows.
would it be possible to have a 5x5 grid?
Would it work with other phone's or just for this phone ?
Have not downloaded the modified zip yet this is the original one....
Don't get me wrong this is definitely better than the original one, but I love to use simi clock and you can clearly see the divider bar not getting along here...check it out...

He had a file original which is the one I have flashed, while he fixes the link try using the one here.
How I got it to work was. I had the ADW Launcher EX bought it for .10 cent.
Then went via root explorer renamed the original launcher
And then pasted this there.
Rebooted and wallah!

np! yeah just a few pixels too tight at the top, maybe 4. and increase side margins by at least 8 on each side would be my guess
Oops! Sorry!
Doh!
Sorry for the link error guys, now fixed in the first post. Thanks to those that helped out in the interim.
I realise there are margin problems, I will look into these tomorrow. Consider this first release a proof of concept.
I can do 5x5, I have had that running but until I fix the margins then 5x5 looks really bad (icons in columns 1 and 5 are cut in half). The problem is that the icon spacing is set to absolute values for 4x4 this is why we also have a problem for the 5 rows at the moment.
No promises but I think we can get perfect 4x5 (portrait) and possibly perfect 5x5 (portrait).
I will not spend a lot of time on landscape however, I never use that.

yup simiclock and then a bunch of alterations inside. Background color all zeros then text all black with a bit of alpha and that's it. Simple yet elegant I like it. I used to use fancy widgets but now this.

How did you get Simi Clock to work on your GNex? I got it downloaded but couldn't find it in the widget section.
How difficult do you think it would be to add an extra few screens to the nexus?

[Theme][2.2] HoloGlass - 4.4.3 Dialer!

HOLOGLASS, super-minimal and totally classy!
Because a lot of people liked what I'm doing here, they wanted a donate version. That has now been released
Free Beta: right here!
--------------
Hey XDA, I have been working on this idea for a few days about a month at this point... one, because I don't like how the recent CM10/AOKP digital clock widget has been looking lately, but more importantly, because I wanted a thin and light UI that focused on the User, (primarily their background choices), and I haven't seen a good ROM or skin that did this well / the way I wanted. Sticking to the Holo theme was very important while designing this, and I think that is very clear in the result (No pun intended).
I've been taking it rather slow and steady, making sure I know exactly what each line of my theme does, where each image goes, etc. This is my first theme, so be patient
You will notice the theme doesn't match the images below; those were my ideal mockups and I had to make some compromises due to system limitations. A custom ROM might change that, and is in the works. Also, the lockscreen widget doesn't exist yet, that I know of. I'm designing that too.
UPDATES:
7/10: Donate Version updated with 4.4.3 dialer and contacts. Took WAY TOO LONG. Now to work on CM theme engine style.
2/5: Donate version updated with KitKat support, fixes ugly grey actionbar, but temporarily reverts the new dialer and contacts (only 4.4)
8/23: b1.9 - Big update!
First step to update to 4.3 roms. Had to revert the deskclock back to fat hours for now, and Contacts.apk is still off, but it's closer. More to come. Added support for the NEW paid Swype keyboard (trail is still orange, sorry), AOKP Circlemod battery, White CM Battery, and a lot of really minor tweaks while I fixed all the things I broke trying to organize code and stuff.
4/17: b1.7 with TRANSPARENT KEYBOARD wut wut
4/16: b1.6 with new notification tray background, merged donate and beta so everyone gets QS toggles, and some more surprises Also started work on some weather widget icons for the lockscreen ideas.
4/15: b1.4 with numerous statusbar and other fixes, and Donate Version with ALL the QS toggle's themed!
4/12: Beta v1.3 - Large update with more assets, properly themed colors, and a fix for the dialog issue!!!
4/11: Beta v1.2 ACTUALLY fixed the MMS issue after a couple tries.
4/10: Put out the themed MMS on the appstore; Thanks to Justin Bourne for jumpstarting it!
4/10: Still stuck on the dialog-as-a-new-page issue, so I'm looking to redo the styles.xml again.... joy! Removing the apk from the thread so everyone can recieve updates via Google Play.
UPDATE 4/9: One month later, HoloGlass emerges as a rather complete beta. The rest is history.
Literal History (of the alpha):
So I love you guys and this glass theme too much to sleep even; I stayed up all night to get this ready and out the door. I kept telling myself, oh, just one more asset, etc etc, and then it's 530am and I have to go to work soon. ANYWAYS. I redid my workflow to included an official signing key & zipalign, and JUST uploaded to the appstore, so the link probably wont be live for a little while. But because of the almost 800 alpha 2.1 users, I'm going to post it up here one last time so you can get it first (and with that shiney XDA version badge on it)
UPDATE 4/7: Started over, sort of; Rebuilding the styles.xml so everything is smoother, fixing most of the transition issues, fixed the notification clock/button issue, and themed the notifications, but the glass styles haven't been finished yet, so no new apk yet. Once I do that, however, I think we'll be graduating to BETA, and will post in the app store. COMING SOON!!!!
Another 4/5: Alpha 2.1 - Accidently had temp QS images in there, and fixed some more colors (like the status bar clock). I tried playing with the text sizes, (larger clock done in holo-thin/holo-light, etc), but... it wasn't HOLO, so even if I wanted to "YOLO", it was a big NO-GO.
GIANT UPDATE 4/5: I was sneaky and made an initial alpha available somewhere in the thread, but after doing so I fixed a few things (namely, the animation piece; by turning it off, lol), and am ready to make this an official alpha. OP updated to reflect that. Oh, and I made myself a signature too
UPDATE: 4/2: QS Toggles & systemUI icons done, see Post 116 for a sexy screenshot
UPDATE: 4/1: Halfway through making the new SystemUI icons, see Post 144 for more deets. Hoping to have an XDA alpha/beta out in the next few days.
UPDATE: 3/18: Updated OP Title to reflect that this is actually in development. Pretty good progress on basic apps and updated Holo theme, but needs refactoring and to redo most notification icons for proper transparency. Not bad for 10 days after-hours work.
UPDATE: 3/12: See Post 43 for screenshots of the first baby steps! sortof-holo-glass in a real theme!
UPDATE: 3/11: Any experienced Theme-ers want to give me a few tips? I'm starting to understand it but can't seem to get my head around the first steps; once I get in I will be fine. Thanks!
UPDATE 3/8: I've cracked open my first Theme template, and will be working from there. Starting with JB 4.1, and might work my way down.

Theme Dropdowns, Notifications, Spinners
Refactor colors and styles.xml to be ... better and more re-usable
Other small inconsistencies

I really love this idea and wouldn't mind paying for it even.
The only issue I see is while the clear ui works well with the wallpapers you've chosen, it may not with every wallpaper, as far as text and icon readability. Luckily I use mostly darker toned backgrounds.
If the final product looks anything like your mockups, I'll be in minimalist heaven. Good luck!

Re: [WIP/IDEA] HoloGlass - Thoughts?
In theory it's a great idea. A problem that I see is in the transparent notification drawer because anything that you have on the home screen would be seen in the drawer and could potentially make it hard to read. But it's still a pretty awesome idea.

All the background designs have a ~20-40% black overlay, and that overlay would be included in the final ROM layout, so theoretically any background should work. (I played with a lot). I haven't tried ALL white yet though... maybe I should.
I've also considered learning how to make the BG darkening layer transparency a user-customizable setting, to adjust as needed.

I think this could be solved with the "Notification Background" option that I know at least AOKP has built, so it would just copy the system background and not have the icons show through.
Another Idea I'm playing with is a background rotator (probably exists), that would change the background every X minutes/hours.

Do you have a personal preference for roms at the moment, or would you prefer it to be a skin on top of your normal rom? If I have to fork an entire codebase, I guess I'd probably choose between CM10 and AOKP, so people's preference helps!
Re: [WIP/IDEA] HoloGlass - Thoughts?
I think it would be nice as a theme. That way people could use it on any ROM with the built in theme chooser. Then you could release it here and put a donate version on the play store. I'd buy it. Then again I'd definitely give the ROM a try too! Hopefully we start to see this around more either way because I think that looks great

If anyone has information on how to build for theme choosers, and the extent they can modify the OS, please, PM it to me. My gut instinct tells me that without doing it in a ROM, you'll have to combine 3-4 different apps or mods to get the same thing, but I'll start looking in to it.
Looks awesome! Great Idea! :good:

and i think that if you can cooperate with a developer you and the dev both can get benifit, and further more,do some UI framework mod
This is definitely theme chooser theme worthy. If you made it a rom and it was for GSM Nexus it would leave us CDMA users high and dry.
By making it a theme anyone using CM10-10.1or have theme chooser could use it, CDMA or GSM. I would also donate for a theme like this.
P.S. There is an app that rotates wallpapers whether it's on a timer or you select a different wallpaper for each of your home screens. It's called multi-picture live wallpaper
Love the look.
Question though. What lockscreen widget is that?

I'm on a Toro myself, so don't worry
Besides, if I *DID* end up going the custom ROM route, (which I am still considering, since after playing around a little, with AOKP + Nova I have been able to get pretty close to the look I want, and my ideal scenario is a one-stop mod), the stuff I am changing would not affect the core ROM, and could automate builds through custom merging with each branch.
But you are right, a theme is the easier route, (plus easier to make a donate version of).
Thanks for all the support guys, I'll try to make this happen.
PS: As for the bg rotation piece, in order to get the notification pulldown to not show the app/homescreen icons underneath, I think some custom work will be needed; I don't know if there is an easy way to pull the same background used. We'll see. Maybe I'll figure that one out for v2.0

[Theme][Google Play - Free][KK/L/MM/N/O]MonoChrome Theme

If you're interested to yet another grey/dark theme I made one with Sony Theme Creator. It's fully tested for Lollipop on my Xperia M2, but thanks to Sony Theme Creator it well supports KitKat, although some assets may differ. So please report any wrong in this thread.
Now certified by Sony! Check it in the Xperia Theme portal!
COMPATIBLE WITH MARSHMALLOW, NOUGAT AND OREO(*)
(*) Unfortunately Sony on Oreo drastically removed many customisations. The themes mostly change the Xperia Home, Lock Screen and Navigation bar.
MORE THAN 100,000 DOWNLOADS!!
Please do not forget to rate it 5 Stars in the store! At least for the effort.
Lockscreen analog clock is only available on Z2 series and above running at least Android 5.1
Icon Packs are available only on Android 6.0 and above
Also, as for user request I made a version with full black Status, Navigation and Action bars (Light Action bar excluded otherwise the text would become unreadable. I can't find where its text color is defined). You can download it from the attachments. Take it as it is because unless of major bugs it won't be updated (sorry).
Please note that "MonoChrome" and the attached "MonoChrome Black" are two different themes. So you can install both, the first from the Play Store and the latter manually from here.

MY FREE XPERIA THEMES IN XDA

this worked very well on my Z1c running the latest 5.1.1 LP build 368
in fact, it was one of the few themes (apart from the official Sony ones in the playstore) that worked. not sure why but the other themes on the playstore and xda didn't have any effect after selecting/activating them in the theme selector
a small request (if you have the time for it): could you make another version with the default nav bar, status bar, and action bar 100% black (i.e. FF000000)?

I think it's because they were made for KitKat. Most new assets don't apply on Lollipop. That's why I made my own theme using Sony Theme Creator, far too many were broken (one of mine as well, and to port it hasn't exactly been a walk. Still working on it).

Well, it could be done. But why? I think it's dark enough, it's Grey 900. Honestly I don't feel like making a separate version for it, dealing with only grays is a total pain. Make a small change and something, somewhere gets unreadable.. I was thinking more about keeping it as a base and make other themes using the accent colors (which makes life easier).

i tried a lot of the new ones too, that were LP-specific (like the ones below). they weren't just broken, applying them simply reverted my theme back to stock. so very happy to have found yours!

Well, it could be done. But why? I think it's dark enough, it's Grey 900. Honestly I don't feel like making a separate version for it, dealing with only grays is a total pain. Make a small change and something, somewhere gets unreadable.. I was thinking more about keeping it as a base and make other themes using the accent colors (which makes life easier).

sure, I understand. no compulsion at all. I just wanted a 100% black one because I have a lot of Tasker scenes that are full screen and having a black nav bar would help them blend in. My Z1c's bezel is also black, so by changing the nav key colors to black (using an intent to GravityBox) on a black nav bar background would give the appearance of immersive mode without the drawbacks of immersive mode
Well, the first theme on the link I think requires root. It changes the framework-res and some apps. I stay far away from rooted themes, the stock theming on Xperia is good enough. The second I'm surprised that doesn't work. I've seen that dev in Google Play and his themes have quite good reviews. Oh well, it's a plus for my theme, then!
Regarding the all black bars I'll think about it. During development I was afraid they were already too dark! Maybe I'll make a second one and call it "MonoChrome Black". Writing in the description "as from users request". I need a second free theme anyway. I'll see, but I don't promise anything. If it breaks the readability again I'll throw it away.

thanks for considering it! I have root and SU mode but the first linked theme still didn't work for me. the only two authors that worked are Sony (official) and The Green (quite a few themes and some paid ones too but unfortunately nothing minimal). i use my phone a lot in the dark so nothing is too black for me! =)

Well, thanks. But that implies modifying the system apks, which requires root and may not work on different devices. As I wrote above i stay away from it. It just means looking for trouble. the beauty of Sony Theme Creator is that you develop for one device and then it is compatible for all, as long as they are 4.4.4 or above.

If it needs root you also need to replace the apks in /system, I think. Then as I wrote above it may work in one phone but not in another.
About the full black I was thinking about making one and add in only in here. That shouldn't take long. But if you have suggestions to make it different enough to be distinguished from MonoChrome, so much that I can publish it in Google Play, they are welcome. i mean, once I start something I can as well finish it.

I notice that you embedded a patterned background in the Settings App ... how about putting in a darker gray background, so that you can still view black text, but it won't be as jarring as FFFFFF white against the 000000 black? this would fit into the overall theme of "full black" (but without having to change text to white/light colors). i'm not sure if the same background change could be effected for the other system apps like clock, conversations, calendar ... since i don't use them, but that could be a start

I decided to take the unpublished route. And yeah, I had in mind to lower the brightness of the Dark Mode background indeed. Although it seems to dark to me, but I have low brightness on my phone. Also the dialogs are full black. It's light grey on black, it won't hurt the eyes. So I updated the main post also adding the new MonoChromeBlack.apk. I hope you'll enjoy it. As i wrote in the main post it won't be maintained, though. So if you have any complaint to make do it fast.

that was fast, thank you! unfortunately i wasn't able to install the linked apk (above). it gave me an error message of "app not installed". could this be due to a signing error? i uninstalled the play store apk just in case, rebooted, but still the full black apk didn't install
