[Q] How much cpu temp is normal when playing heavy games? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I bought a Nexus 7 2013 refurbished 2 month ago. I noticed that when I play heavy games like World of tanks Blitz(everything max and shadow turned off) Modern combat 5, Nova 3 etc. My tablet gets very hot 80-95 celsius and like near burn my hands.Same on 4.4 stock and 6.0.1 stock,PureNexus with elemantalx kernel without oc. Is it normal or should I RMA it? Thanks for the answers. P.s :sorry for my bad english.

Anyone please help me. I know there is many question from heat but for me it's goes insane temptatures.

OK, get Antutu Benchmark, run the 15-min stress test, then in the app's info tab check battery's temperature. We'll compare it. Actually note the temperature before and after test.
Antutu measures only battery's temperature but for this test it is good enough, however do not recharge it during the test.

The temp just raise 2-3 celsius. The cpu at the first percent go to 83-89 celsius.

No worries, same here. Note that GPU was not 'stressed', I see 0%.

The tablet is not thermal throttling. If you have that turned off, turn it back on. I had it off on my lg g3 once and it hit 110°C while it was updating apps. Check the thermal tab in K.A

I setted the temp in K.A and after every boot says current value is not supported. I setted the temp in Elementalx kernel manager to 70,75,82,92 and always still go to 80 when playing.

How to disable thermal throttling on LG devices

Open system menu by dialing 3845#*980#, go down the list, find items "High temperature property OFF" and "Thermal mitigation daemon OFF", check them both to Enabled ON state. PROFIT! I don't know maybe the reboot is needed or not. But with thermal mitigation daemon disabled you can achieve as high as 24700 in Antutu and the screen would not dim in hot conditions anymore
And of course don't forget that if you damage your phone somehow by overheating it or shorten you battery capacity its not us to blame. Be a reasonable guy with your hardware
Of course tweak can be applied to any LG Phone, say to E970, for example

So this doesn't increase the cpu speed from 1700 to 1900? How fast will the cpu run to achieve 24000+ score on Antutu?

Now, it won't automatically go higher than 1700, it merely will not drop to 1100 or whatever speed stated in thermal.conf in case of matching thermal threshold and just will continue to work on 1700. In fact I don't think it will somehow "damage" SoC, it's just meant to save your hand from holding 50°C device while gameplaying

Thanks for this! Always wondered why this phone stayed so cool. Benchmarks are higher, games run smoother and so far it looks like the occasional but horrible home screen lag I get while using live wallpaper (any launcher) seems to be gone so far.
I'm cautiously optimistic that this will fix the lag, but I'm sure you're right, it seems like the phone randomly idles some cores causing the lag. Hopefully we see some custom kernels for this device soon.
Thanks again.

Notice in the last screen shot how Antutu usually warms the phone up to the point where it only runs at 1.1 ghz. Also in quadrant, I'd get anywhere between 11000 and 8000 in testing, now it is consistently in the 12000 range. Awesome!

Because the setting is to turn off the thermal control. So by checking the box to on you are turning it off. It will always say off, as long as the box is set to on then it is working.

I noticed it got pretty warm after only playing pinball arcade for 15 minutes I have used it for hours before without it getting warm. I might have to turn the throttling back on just to be on the safe side. Call me a wuss

This might be a question better answered by Samsung (unless it is a carrier model). Many questions though....
Does it get too hot to hold? Are you charging it while playing? Is your tablet oc/ov? What is the ambient temperature where playing?
Here is a previous thread with this same topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2251830
Might scroll through the posts and maybe even post there about it as well. Sorry, can't help anymore than this.

But its not a problem. Your device will power down or turn down CPUs when you reach a certain temperature threshold. At least I know my phone does. I've never seen temperatures like that on any of my devices. The most I've ever seen even when over clocked to 2.1 GHz is in the 50s. Even then I'm not worried about it damage isn't done until the high 80s 90s. But how are you getting these temps. Are you outside in 90 degree heat gaming? I even have my GPU way over clocked and I never seen 70.

Yeah, only problem I had with this device and my Note 2. (same processor). These bad boys heat up. Especially if you do alot of flashing of roms.
Yea I ran my note 2 really hot playing dead trigger last night and overclocked 1.92 ghz plus 733 mhz gpu overclock but I still dont have heat readings of more than 56 celcius. And I have an app that monitors cpu temperature while im playing so I can see it in real time. Maybe your device is having a problem. Oh do you have a real thick case? That can cause heat buildup. If I leave , y case on my note 2 while playing a game it causes less heat dissipation and runs almost 10 degrees warmer. You might wanna consider that

Why will undervolting harm your CPU or battery? I can see stability issues with undervolting and have experienced them while experimenting with the settings. I cant see how it would harm the hardware though. As someone said above. The device should shut down if the processor gets too hot to protect itself. Also, undervolting should reduce the temperature.
The built in powersaving option in touchwiz will underclock your cpu to 1.1GHz. you can set it back to your standard setting with a push of a single button the menu.
I overclock and undervolt and have no worries about damage. I have had issues with my tablet turning itself off sometimes, but it has only happened on particularly hot days. I reduced my OC from 1.8 to 1.7Ghz. And i reduced my undervolt from -75 to -50 vs stock as I was having the occasional crash.
Are the CPU and GPU on the same processor or located in the same area of the tablet? I hear alot on hear about the CPU temp making the device extremely warm but wondered how the GPU acted. If you underclock the CPU, does this put more load on to the GPU when playing games or will the GPU load be the same regardless.

G3 bricked?

Argg!
I was playing a game on my G3 (UK 16GB) and it got SUPER hot!
It turned off and now will not turn back on. It's stuck on the LG initial splash screen.
I've done all the usual (remove battery, power + volume down, recharge battery etc) but I'm stuck.
Any suggestions before I return it today?
I'm sad ?

Has the phone called back down yet?
Don't try to turn it on until its cooled down.
Take the battery out and leave the back door off for half hour then try again.
Just so we know, did you turn Thermal Throttling off in the hidden menu? If so, this is a prime example of why I have been telling people not to do this.

Hey Lenny,
I didn't turn Thermal Throttling off. And I would also advise people to not do that.
I've just returned from CPW with a brand new handset! FYI the 28 day replacement policy starts from the day you receive the phone so I was still covered. Just!
I did all the things you suggest. It was stone cold and it still wouldn't get past the LG boot screen. Also the little sparkly animation on the LG letters wasn't playing which suggests it borks out very early on in the boot sequence.
I really hope we don't start to see this more.
Fingers crossed!

Temperatures a little high?

Hi all, I bought this phone last week and I think i'm having issues with the temperature.
When I use it like for 10 minutes using instagram, whatsapp and twitter, the temperature goes to 40/42º C (104ºF)
The max temp I had was 45ºC (113ºF) no more than that.
What should I do? It's normal? Should I swap it for another because it's under warranty.
Btw my serial number starts with 510...
And i'm using kdz 20d
Which temperatures? CPU? or the surface of the phone?
Are you in a hot environment?
Mine is currently maxing out at 37 ºC, but here is winter.
On the other hand that is normal for a CPU in use (especially if we are talking about the 808).

I have, 33 now and idle, so having 40-42 while under load is OK.
Edit: just went to 40, after browsing XDA and replying to Hangouts and Whatsapp messages + listening to music.
Moreover, if you google temperatures, you see that is normal. But again it depends what task are handled by the CPU it self. Having not more than 45 is acceptable for the 808. On the other hand if your CPU is under constant load, that may indicate, that some app(s) using your device all the time.
