This might be a question better answered by Samsung (unless it is a carrier model). Many questions though....
Does it get too hot to hold? Are you charging it while playing? Is your tablet oc/ov? What is the ambient temperature where playing?
Here is a previous thread with this same topic: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2251830
Might scroll through the posts and maybe even post there about it as well. Sorry, can't help anymore than this.

But its not a problem. Your device will power down or turn down CPUs when you reach a certain temperature threshold. At least I know my phone does. I've never seen temperatures like that on any of my devices. The most I've ever seen even when over clocked to 2.1 GHz is in the 50s. Even then I'm not worried about it damage isn't done until the high 80s 90s. But how are you getting these temps. Are you outside in 90 degree heat gaming? I even have my GPU way over clocked and I never seen 70.

Yeah, only problem I had with this device and my Note 2. (same processor). These bad boys heat up. Especially if you do alot of flashing of roms.
Yea I ran my note 2 really hot playing dead trigger last night and overclocked 1.92 ghz plus 733 mhz gpu overclock but I still dont have heat readings of more than 56 celcius. And I have an app that monitors cpu temperature while im playing so I can see it in real time. Maybe your device is having a problem. Oh do you have a real thick case? That can cause heat buildup. If I leave , y case on my note 2 while playing a game it causes less heat dissipation and runs almost 10 degrees warmer. You might wanna consider that

Why will undervolting harm your CPU or battery? I can see stability issues with undervolting and have experienced them while experimenting with the settings. I cant see how it would harm the hardware though. As someone said above. The device should shut down if the processor gets too hot to protect itself. Also, undervolting should reduce the temperature.
The built in powersaving option in touchwiz will underclock your cpu to 1.1GHz. you can set it back to your standard setting with a push of a single button the menu.
I overclock and undervolt and have no worries about damage. I have had issues with my tablet turning itself off sometimes, but it has only happened on particularly hot days. I reduced my OC from 1.8 to 1.7Ghz. And i reduced my undervolt from -75 to -50 vs stock as I was having the occasional crash.
Are the CPU and GPU on the same processor or located in the same area of the tablet? I hear alot on hear about the CPU temp making the device extremely warm but wondered how the GPU acted. If you underclock the CPU, does this put more load on to the GPU when playing games or will the GPU load be the same regardless.

Hi! I noticed that according to Franco's app my CPU temp is almost always above 40 degrees just after some usage (Facebook, browsing, texting) and only drops to around 28 degrees after being idle. As this is causing throttling I wanted to ask if it was just me or are these normal temperatures?
I am running Franco Kernel r98 with no CPU overclocking or undervolting

Agreed. 60c is probably a conservative termal design limit (I'd expect something at a minimum of 80-100c before there was any actual damage to the CPU. Though, that kind of temp would probably damage your HAND or the plastic housing before the silicon. Anyone know why anyone would force throttling at only 40c? Power conservation comes to mind.
bencozzy said:
True power conservation, but now we are making it complete a task at 700mhz for twice as long when it could be done in a flash at 1350 MHz kind of defeats the purpose? That's like hot plugging good in theory but real world says other governors give same battery life and without the instability lagginess.

I though someone did some real world testing a while back and found that 2x700MHz drew less power than 1x1350MHz?
My average CPU temp is 34°C (93°F), and I go up to 67°C (152°F) when I play games (like GTA-VC).
Do you think it's normal that kind of temperature from the S4Pro ?
Actually this is really low...
67c on high load like games, which stress the cpu?
My device goes to 80c easily, starts to throttle cpu speed and shut down cores, all of the devices do that. This temps are normal.
By the way which app you used to measure that temps?
If you really want to see how your device holding up,
Download that app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.into.stability
While run the classic Stability Test measure your cpu usage and temps.
Personally I use FauxClock.
After a few minutes you'll see the high temps and the cores throttle.
Oh, joining this question. Just got a 32Gb LTE version and found out it's getting quite warm when playing something like Osmos, Doodle Jump or something. I don't know how to get the exact temperature, cause monitors I' found on market, show only the battery temp. Anyway who else gets his N7 warm/hot when some heavy app is running? Asking, cause my friend also got the same N7 and I don't remember it to be hot even after running 3D games for quite a long time.
I used the app "System Tuner" from gplay.
Apparently, your StabilityTest app requires more power than GTA-VC, I recorded a 82°C with a 50mV undervolt (on Franco r3 kernel) after a 8min StabilityTest, then I just stopped it. I'm a little afraid of this kind of temperature :/ Are you sure it's okay ? I don't know well the mobile device world...
That's the real temperature , even higher,
And you don't need to worry too much.
Your device will turn off if the CPU reaches too high CPU temp,
And 80-90 c is fine. The soc is built to work on that temps.
As you could see your CPU shutdown cores and lower cores speed while the temperatures going higher, that's called throttle.
You don't need to worry too much.

StabilityTest can load all 4 CPU cores 100%. You won't find a game that does that.
The CPU will be thermally throttled (clock frequency will be limited when the temperature is too high), so you won't damage anything.
And is the average temp of 45-50 °C normal? I'm just using Skype and surfing the internet.

If you run a adb logcat while gaming you start to see alerts going off for high temperatures when it gets around 70°c or higher. I found it very interesting that it was alerting when it got that high instead of ignoring it like you say till 80-90°c.

Games use GPU which adds much more heat to the conclusion.
Stability Test don't.

The device doesn't ignore it till 80-90c. It's start at 60c.
I just say that it's safe temp for the soc to operate. Which means your cpu never use all cores, and the cores that active wouldn't be at the highest speed, while the cpu reaches 60c, more heat more throttle.
Ok thanks to all of you, so it's like computers : if it's too hot, it will stop before it reaches a dangerous temperature.

Those are quite ok. If you include skype with voice/video calling ofcourse. I just get about 30-40 with just surfing and chatting facebook messenger skype/yahoo/viber on background
I'm fairly sure the CPU tends to downclock itself not because IT is getting too hot, but because it's generating too much heat for the battery. Almost all CPUs can easily withstand upwards of 80C. Batteries, on the other hand, can't.
Hey Guys,

Thanks

The thermal throttle stops the big cores when they reach a certain temperature. It's "normal" behavior on this cpu.
But they are stopped all time. When I Power on the device and start a big game, when I wake up the device after a while and play a big game... ever! Temperatures are round about 55°C
If you're on one of the Android N Dev Previews then it is probably the well known bug that shuts the big cores off. If you're on Marshmallow then it is most likely thermal throttling. I think the big cores turn off at about 45C.
Okay. But why does my device heat up so fast? I have read a few Tests and the Processor never gets hotter then 42°C.

It's your use mostlikely, e.g. camera (, cpu intensive games, benchmarks etc) takes all the cpu power possible, that'll heat up your device into range of thermal throttling in no time, while one can browser normal websides for hours without any signifcant heat building up.
---
I think it's a general misunderstanding of how a big.little cluster cpu works. Those aren't 6 equal cores, the big ones are (most of the time) just there for short term boosts and otherwise drag down performance overall, especially when the cpu heats up. I can see a much higher use of the big cores e.g. when loading websides compared to gaming, where it comes down to how the game can run on the remaining cores (little ones) after a few minutes.
But the Cores shouldn't heat up after a few seconds, should they? And they are simply alsways off.
I have tested it with the Geekbench 3, Smash Hit and the Camera App. The results like the temperature and the clock Speed came from CPU-Z.
My Standard result of the Geekbench is 650 and 2500 points. The two big Cores are stopped and the temperature is round about 50°C
The Standard witch I have found in the Internet was 1300 and 3600 points. The temperature shoult be round about 42°C-44°C
Everywhere I looked they said that the OnePlus 3 has the least thermal throttling and best sustained performance of any phone out there. But nobody discussed why exactly it did not throttle while other phones did. Everyone simply said "Oh they must have very good thermal management or something". Then I saw a video comparing the temperatures of the ZTE axon 7 and the OnePlus 3 (google "Zte axon 7 vs OnePlus 3 antutu thermal throttling"), it turns out the reason the OnePlus 3 doesn't throttle isn't some magical thermal dissipation and management, it's solely because they raised the temperature at which the phone would throttle to beyond comfortable zones. In the video with just a few iterations of Antutu CPU test, the OnePlus 3 metal skin's temperature reached a scorching 47 degrees Celcius. Google shows that holding anything metal at 50 degrees Celcius for more than a brief moment can cause tissue damage (1st degree burns). And this phone was just shy of that temperature during Antutu's benchmarks when only the CPU was running, so can you imagine what temperatures it would reach when you're playing a highly graphical game where both CPU and GPU are being taxed at the same time? Why does nobody talk about this?

No actually Hearthstone is not a demanding game at all, not even remotely. In fact an iphone 4 could run it without busting a sweat. And many games can actually be more stressful than a benchmark because you would be running both CPU and GPU at the same time and would likely be running the GPU at 100%. Most GPU benchmarks run the GPU at 100% too but without using the CPU at the same time.
A non issue imo

I can't figure out why the hell that idiot in the video used real racing as a benchmark. Do these people even know what a GPU or CPU is?
Anyway, that video is not reliable, especially since the OnePlus 3 uses a 1080p display and has to push far less pixels than those other phones, that game does not tax the phone's hardware in any way shape or form.
The CPU starts throttling at 75°C like pretty much any other phone out there... This thing just dissipates heat better than any other Android phone out there which is why the chassis heats up a bit more. Don't worry it doesn't get that hot at all

The fact that there's a lot of us out here using the phone, but as far as I've seen zero reports of people getting burnt by hot phones, in. Y experience it stays way cooler to the touch than either of my last two phones (Xperia z2 and Samsung s3).
Hey guys, for those Mi Max 1 users with the snapdragon 650.
Does the phone tend to heat up during long gaming sessions e.g. Pogo?
Does it throttle often?
Ambient temperature is around 35 Degree Celsius.

S650 does throttle down but not much. 1.4 GHz is sustainable for big cores on long runs and 500~550 MHz for a GPU but this isn't significant. The S652 can't hold all 4 big cores on more than one GHz in extended use while everything else is the same as with S650. I don't play Pogo but games I play & in general it doesn't throttle often.
Mine heats up only when charging and using it at the same time on heavy tasks. If only charging it won't heat up. If only using heavy tasks it won't heat up. If I used slower charger than QC 3.0 it would probably be fine.
Thanks for the reply folks. The 650 looks to be the safer option in this case. Another way is for me to get the 625 with 8 little cores which doesn't overheat at all.
