Just got my phone yesterday. Running Calk's 2.7 and ICS theme, set dpi to 160, looks and runs awesome. However, it always thinks it's either charging or plugged into USB. the red LED never wants to turn off. how can I remedy this problem?
Possibly try turning it off, booting to recovery, clearing cache/dalvik-cache, and then clear battery stats
Was it like this prior to rooting and custom rom?
Apk, that didn't do it.
yes, it did the same thing beforehand. Except takng out the battery solved the problem once.
Get it exchanged ASAP. This is a defect with the USB port. Has NOTHING to do with software. I was outside of my 14 day return and Sprint made me send it to Samsung to get fixed. $7 jig and two weeks later it was fixed.
With my tech background I would say check the charging port. Could be a metal shaving or *gasp* corrosion!

Shouldn't matter. The phone has a one year warranty from Samsung. I bought my wife an Epic on craigslist last year and had it repaired under warranty.

Yup. I had the same problem. I think it is related to the USB port (from reading a few SGS2 threads). I took it to the Sprint Store and they said the USB port looks good. They reset it and it still acted that way. However, 2 hours later the problem is gone. They ordered me a replacement so I'm still going to take it because who knows why the problem starts. I did have Calk's rom and also have the battering monitoring widget by 3C and I had cleared the battery stats multiple times prior to the symptoms starting. Just proving as many clues as possible...
What do you mean by reset?
Funny I see you have this problem (not really funny) because I noticed the same thing last night and just figured it was Rom related.
It sucks... can you give more details about the reset process? Soft reset?

I had the same problem.
The red light was on all the time, only went out when I got a text. If I pulled the battery the phone would show like it was charging as soon as I put it back in. It would show the battery animation on the screen not plugged in.
After a battery pull the phone would also not boot using the power button, had to boot to recovery and boot from there.
Took it to sprint, they gave me a new battery. Solved the problem only until phone was plugged in to charge. Then started all over again.
Turned out to be a problem with the USB port and they ordered me a replacement.
got it fixed! looks like the pcb on the port was sitting too close to the lower edge of the phone. pushed it up gently and now it seems to be working. thanks for the direction, nivron.
my other concern is that battery life sucks ass. drains really quick (at the rate of ~6%/hr!). again, running calk 2.7 + ics theme. also, taking out the battery seems to reduce the life 20%. what's the deal...
Hmm, now the USB cable needs to be at a certain angle for the phone to charge. Is there any way a Sprint store could furnish a replacement for me?
My phone stopped charging from its regular wall charger this morning. Now when I plug it in it doesn't do anything. If I turn it off and plug it in the battery icon with the charging icon shows up then shows it charging, then it shows the charging icon again and the same thing keeps happening until the battery just dies. The only way I can get it to charge is if I plug it into usb port on my computer. Is there any solution?

The same exact same thing happened to me today! Very strange. I restarted about 4 times, and took out the battery etc. and it just started working.

Happened to me too ..
I used every trick vacuum, hair dryer, sun-light, heat etc. but didnt work
then I dipped my phone in 100 kg rice bag for 2 days .. lol
problem resolved !
I just started experiencing the same thing. Occasionally I can get it to charge, but usually it just sits there and dies. I haven't been able to test the pc charging, as I'm currently on vacation. This is pretty random, considering I've had the phone since launch day (Verizon), and have dropped it, etc in the past with no problems; then randomly it won't charge.
Had strange problems like this. Try bending the little tab in the charging port on your phone (carefully) away from the side. I haven't had a problem since.

Your charging brick or USB could be bad. Try different cords/chargers.

I've had similar issues.
Some background: It started just after I flashed the AUG 29 AOKP Jellybean nightly. It might just be a co-incidence but I saw a couple of people on rootzwiki who had a similar issue.
I wasn't charging at all then. Only when I was turned off. I was having driver issues with computers that had connected to the phone before.
I have since reset it back to stock JB and the charging from the charger seems to have been fixed. Instead my pogo pin charging is a bit iffy. It works sometimes but not always.........
Well, I spoke too soon! NOT CHARGING from the wall again. When phone is shutdown, it charges. In Android, it doesn't.
Could you tell us what you have done so far? Any solutions that you tried but didn't work?
Have you tried:
-different battery?
-using different cable or the charger?
-straightening the metal part of the port?
-cleaning the port with alcohol?
These are the known solutions for most of the Gnex port problem. If you haven't tried already, please do so. If you're still having problem with it, tell us.
Solution
This is not a randome issue... Happened to me too only ONCE and never again
Solution
Let the phone battery die out completely and then charge a bit and boot into CWM recovery. Reset battery stats and you are good to go.:good: Or you can even try reseting battery stats without complete discharge. I havent tried the later since had this problem only once. I'm not a developer but my theory is that there is some embeded software that determines power supply and due to some reason it got corrupted.
Hit THANKS if I helped
Thank you everyone for your help. Really appreciate it. So I know I didn't get it wet. And I changed chargers and batteries to no avail. Then I tried what the last post said, to wipe battery stats. I did that and restarted. Did it again because first time didn't do anything. Now its charging fine. Great relief

I'm experiencing this problem now. But I think it's because I was messing around with 'Fast Charge' settings in my AOKP Milestone 1 ROM controls without really knowing what any of it meant. I'll try to wipe battery stats and do a few reboots. I'll let you guys know.

Same problem for me now too! =\ I'm using cyanogenmod though. I reset battery stats, formatted and factory reset the thing and nothing. Also tried a few different cables. It's also no longer being recognized when connected to PC.
EDIT: Looks like the USB connector on the device was slightly off center. Bent it up a bit and it seems to be working as normal now.

I've been using my qi charging successfully with one of the OEM backs from eBay and my tylt vu for about a month now. Havent had a single problem always charged no matter what position I put it in. Got to work the other night and realized my phone wasn't anywhere close to charge. No big deal figured maybe I knocked it off.
Noticed yesterday my phone wouldn't charge at all. I plugged and unplugged the tylt vu several times and no luck. I popped off my case to see if the connection was weak. Nothing. Took off and on the battery cover several times. Nothing. I restarted the phone and it worked like normal again.
Tonight same BS. I tried all the steps above all over again and I even put my old broken droid maxx on the charger and it worked no issue. This leads me to believe my charger is working fine. I laid my phone on its side and the vu led light blinked green then went out.
This time I had to restart the phone twice and it still took 3 minutes for it to start working again.
Everything looks good on the battery cover and the contacts. My case has never interfered as its pretty thin. This seems like a software issue because it fixed with a restart? Today it took 2 restarts. I'm considering buying a new qi cover just to see if my cover is now defective but don't want to shell out the money quite yet in case there's an alternative. But anyone else have any ideas as to what I can do to solve this? Its now charging again but I will update tomorrow with any changes.
Anyone have any suggestions? I am completely stock BTW.

I have returned hone again today to find my phone failing to charge. I'm extremely frustrated and can not seem to figure this out. Something during my daily use to cause this not to work.
Sent from my LG-D851 using XDA Free mobile app
You could flash the kdz and restore the phone which may fix it, but I would back up your phone first.
I'm stock anyway so I'm more likely to just factory reset first.
But i have an additional update I plugged my regular charger in then took it back to the qi charger and it started charging. I messed with open apps to see if anything was causing a problem. No issues and was charging fine. I took my dog outside for 10 minutes and came back qi is not working again. The only change that happened to the phone was it transitioned from WiFi/WiFi calling connection back to regular network and then back to WiFi and WiFi calling when I came back inside. So I'm really not sure what is causing this. Or if i just need a new qi back or something
Sent from my LG-D851 using XDA Free mobile app
I can't remember where i read this, but i read somewhere that the qi charger starts some kind of app or service for the qi when it's placed on it's charger and will charge VERY SLOWLY because of this (like up to 12 hours charge time), i would avoid the qi charger (restart after it was on the qi) and just use your normal charger for a couple days and see if the issue still persists.
That's what I'm doing for now. I really don't know why this is happening. There's no consistency when it decides not to work and when it does. If this doesn't resolve I'll get a new back before I do a factory reset. Dropping 25 dollars seems easier then the weeks it will take me to fully restore my settings backed up until after the issue started and blah blah blah

Ive purchased a new "OEM" charging back. If it doesnt work I guess Im going to have reset. Ive run into some other problems also like sluggishness. So....I will update when I get the new back
Problem seems to be solved with new battery cover. I guess mine went bad after about a month. Hopefully I won't keep going through these like candy and just had a random bad cover.

If you have the problem again, you might want to try just replacing the charging coil. Scraping out the old one is a bit of work, but installing the new one is easy:

Hello, all.
I have a friend with a Nexus 7 2013 (WiFi) that she recently purchased refurbished. After some issues with the charger that they originally sent with the device, she finally got it charged and now it always says that it's "charging" even when it's unplugged. She tried doing a factory reset, but even after going through all that, it still says that it's charging regardless of whether it's plugged in or not. I also recommended she try letting it drain totally to zero and then charge it again to see if it was something it could be tricked into forgetting. I also went into the stock recovery and cleared the cache, to no avail. It is fully updated to Lollipop 5.0.2 with a locked bootloader and stock recovery and seems to be in good physical condition. If anyone has any suggestions I would really appreciate it.
Curious if something could be goofed up with the wireless charging coil.
When you go into the Battery screen (two finger swipe down from the notification shade, tap the battery icon) what does it say at the top? If the battery icon shows charging, it should list how it is charging in the battery screen, AC, USB (I think) or wireless.
Another suggestion might be to unlock the bootloader and flash the factory images direct from Google. I know you said that a factory reset was done, but I'm guessing it was done "onboard" without a PC. Reflashing the entire image could help clear up any cobwebs.
Unlocking the bootloader will induce a factory reset, but if one was already done, it seems like your friend would be OK with trying it again.
@fury683 I tried checking the battery stats for which charging type it believed it had and it says "over USB" so I guess it thinks it's plugged into a computer (probably due to the low (lol) amperage). I'll talk to her and see what she thinks about unlocking the bootloader and flashing the factory image, but she bought it from Amazon so I think, unless someone else can think of anything to try, I'm going to recommend she tries to get it replaced because Amazon's CS is awesome. Thanks for the pointers. If she doesn't have any luck with Amazon, I'll proceed from there.
If a return/exchange is possible, I'd go that route. As for unlocking the bootloader, it can be relocked when you're done flashing the factory image. However once it is locked, unlocking it again will require another factory reset.
Having it unlocked allows for flashing of other ROMs and recovery, as well as easy rooting. If that isn't needed and the user is OK with waiting for OTAs (the 5.0.2 one seems to be taking quite a while for some users), relocking it would be fine.
Did anyone figure out this issue? My nexus 7 started with this exact problem this week. Always shows charging (usb). It will never fully charge, via wall charger or wireless.

I had a 2013 Nexus 7 and it did this when I took it out of the box. It seemed to be a hardware issue. I was able to warranty it with Google. Sorry this is probably not helpful to you since the warranty period is probably over, but at least it probably brings conclusion to your issue.

I was luckily still under warranty, hopefully the issue will be resolved.

My Nexus 7 2012 has the same thing. I tried to replace the USB port, but got no luck. I tried to remove the battery wires too. I think this might be a issue with bootloader. When I plug it on my PC, nothing happens.

I haven't, it could be an app you're running, you might try putting it in safe mode and see if it still happens.

Here's how to enable safe mode-
Turn on safe mode
>Turn the device off.
>Press and hold the Power key.
>When 'Samsung Galaxy Note' appears on the screen, release the Power key.
>Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
>Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.

Had it happen today, did not know until I went to unlock and had to use PIN instead of biometric per security policy.
Probably a package causing a kernel panic. It's a new device, hopefully and update (or AOS7) fixes it soon.
As I learned when I had S7 Edge.. On a reboot you always have to use the pin if you use biometric. But its just on a reboot.

Mine is doing that, too. I've had it about 24 hours now and have purposely avoided loading much of anything. I want to add apps slowly to monitor their impact on battery life. I left it unplugged last night after charging to 100% and it had restarted around 3am. Then it did it again today, around 10am. I took all the latest system and app updates yesterday. Backup is off, auto-updates are off in Play store.
Is there any kind of log file that I can look at to show what process may have caused this?
Nope. Work the crap out of mine. No strange reboots.

Did it again last night. It's got a gap in the battery meter, something I've never seen before, at least on my Nexus 6P. I guess I'll try a full factory reset before contacting support.

That's more than a quick reboot. Did you have to manually power it back on?
Sent from my SM-N930V using Tapatalk
No, it rebooted itself. But it's not accurate. I didn't put the phone down until about 10pm, and it had not rebooted at that time. That battery graph makes it look like it off before 8pm. So something is whacky for sure. I'm realizing it may not be as random as I thought. Seems like it likes to shut down when the battery gets to somewhere around 89 percent.
Did a full system reset this morning, and it just right now rebooted itself again while I was typing this. Damn. Looks like I have a clunker. Battery is at 88% when it came back up. Another odd ball battery graph, too.

I would return it, there is obviously something wrong with it even after a reset. The thing might not turn on at all one day.
Yep, that's the plan. Just called Samsung support, and they did not have anything else to try, and recommended the same.
New phone has not self booted yet, so it appears it was some issue with the first one.
