Qi charging software glitch? Or hardware problem? - G3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been using my qi charging successfully with one of the OEM backs from eBay and my tylt vu for about a month now. Havent had a single problem always charged no matter what position I put it in. Got to work the other night and realized my phone wasn't anywhere close to charge. No big deal figured maybe I knocked it off.
Noticed yesterday my phone wouldn't charge at all. I plugged and unplugged the tylt vu several times and no luck. I popped off my case to see if the connection was weak. Nothing. Took off and on the battery cover several times. Nothing. I restarted the phone and it worked like normal again.
Tonight same BS. I tried all the steps above all over again and I even put my old broken droid maxx on the charger and it worked no issue. This leads me to believe my charger is working fine. I laid my phone on its side and the vu led light blinked green then went out.
This time I had to restart the phone twice and it still took 3 minutes for it to start working again.
Everything looks good on the battery cover and the contacts. My case has never interfered as its pretty thin. This seems like a software issue because it fixed with a restart? Today it took 2 restarts. I'm considering buying a new qi cover just to see if my cover is now defective but don't want to shell out the money quite yet in case there's an alternative. But anyone else have any ideas as to what I can do to solve this? Its now charging again but I will update tomorrow with any changes.
Anyone have any suggestions? I am completely stock BTW.

I have returned hone again today to find my phone failing to charge. I'm extremely frustrated and can not seem to figure this out. Something during my daily use to cause this not to work.
Sent from my LG-D851 using XDA Free mobile app

You could flash the kdz and restore the phone which may fix it, but I would back up your phone first.

I'm stock anyway so I'm more likely to just factory reset first.
But i have an additional update I plugged my regular charger in then took it back to the qi charger and it started charging. I messed with open apps to see if anything was causing a problem. No issues and was charging fine. I took my dog outside for 10 minutes and came back qi is not working again. The only change that happened to the phone was it transitioned from WiFi/WiFi calling connection back to regular network and then back to WiFi and WiFi calling when I came back inside. So I'm really not sure what is causing this. Or if i just need a new qi back or something
Sent from my LG-D851 using XDA Free mobile app

I can't remember where i read this, but i read somewhere that the qi charger starts some kind of app or service for the qi when it's placed on it's charger and will charge VERY SLOWLY because of this (like up to 12 hours charge time), i would avoid the qi charger (restart after it was on the qi) and just use your normal charger for a couple days and see if the issue still persists.

That's what I'm doing for now. I really don't know why this is happening. There's no consistency when it decides not to work and when it does. If this doesn't resolve I'll get a new back before I do a factory reset. Dropping 25 dollars seems easier then the weeks it will take me to fully restore my settings backed up until after the issue started and blah blah blah

Ive purchased a new "OEM" charging back. If it doesnt work I guess Im going to have reset. Ive run into some other problems also like sluggishness. So....I will update when I get the new back

Problem seems to be solved with new battery cover. I guess mine went bad after about a month. Hopefully I won't keep going through these like candy and just had a random bad cover.

If you have the problem again, you might want to try just replacing the charging coil. Scraping out the old one is a bit of work, but installing the new one is easy:

Why does my phone act like it's plugged in all the time...

Just got my phone yesterday. Running Calk's 2.7 and ICS theme, set dpi to 160, looks and runs awesome. However, it always thinks it's either charging or plugged into USB. the red LED never wants to turn off. how can I remedy this problem?
Possibly try turning it off, booting to recovery, clearing cache/dalvik-cache, and then clear battery stats
Was it like this prior to rooting and custom rom?
Apk, that didn't do it.
yes, it did the same thing beforehand. Except takng out the battery solved the problem once.
Get it exchanged ASAP. This is a defect with the USB port. Has NOTHING to do with software. I was outside of my 14 day return and Sprint made me send it to Samsung to get fixed. $7 jig and two weeks later it was fixed.
With my tech background I would say check the charging port. Could be a metal shaving or *gasp* corrosion!

my phone sort of has the same issue...it charges fine but i cant get it to connect to my computer..my phone thinks it still charging yet i have it plugged in my computer it doesnt give me the option to switch it to usb mass storage..
Got it on Craigslist, no exchange possible.

Shouldn't matter. The phone has a one year warranty from Samsung. I bought my wife an Epic on craigslist last year and had it repaired under warranty.

Yup. I had the same problem. I think it is related to the USB port (from reading a few SGS2 threads). I took it to the Sprint Store and they said the USB port looks good. They reset it and it still acted that way. However, 2 hours later the problem is gone. They ordered me a replacement so I'm still going to take it because who knows why the problem starts. I did have Calk's rom and also have the battering monitoring widget by 3C and I had cleared the battery stats multiple times prior to the symptoms starting. Just proving as many clues as possible...
What do you mean by reset?
Funny I see you have this problem (not really funny) because I noticed the same thing last night and just figured it was Rom related.
It sucks... can you give more details about the reset process? Soft reset?

no dice
I had the same problem.
The red light was on all the time, only went out when I got a text. If I pulled the battery the phone would show like it was charging as soon as I put it back in. It would show the battery animation on the screen not plugged in.
After a battery pull the phone would also not boot using the power button, had to boot to recovery and boot from there.
Took it to sprint, they gave me a new battery. Solved the problem only until phone was plugged in to charge. Then started all over again.
Turned out to be a problem with the USB port and they ordered me a replacement.
got it fixed! looks like the pcb on the port was sitting too close to the lower edge of the phone. pushed it up gently and now it seems to be working. thanks for the direction, nivron.
my other concern is that battery life sucks ass. drains really quick (at the rate of ~6%/hr!). again, running calk 2.7 + ics theme. also, taking out the battery seems to reduce the life 20%. what's the deal...
Hmm, now the USB cable needs to be at a certain angle for the phone to charge. Is there any way a Sprint store could furnish a replacement for me?

Battery discharging vs not charging

When my Galaxy Nexus GSM is not plugged in, the battery shows itself as "discharging". Previously this used to be "not charging". I have tried multiple (Jelly Bean) ROMs, different cables, wall and USB chargers. Same problem. The larger issue: my PC no longer recognizes my phone and I have resorted to using AirDroid to transfer files.
Can anyone shed light on this issue?
I have done full wipes, including wiping battery stats.
Mine was always discharging...
And make sure that you got fast charge off if you have that on. That disables MTP capability.
I have exactly the same problem...see my thread...its recent!

I had a similar issue, and then not long after the phone refused to charge. I had to take it to get serviced, and the ended up giving me a refurb instead.
I think it has to do with the temp of the battery, if its too hot and you have it plugged in it will say discharging.

First, don't use a charger other than the original. The different volts mess with the NFC chip and antenna. Try disabling NFC and rebooting. Leave NFC off and try to charge. If that doesn't do it I have another option that might work but I'm CDMA so you would have an extra step to change lines in file.
Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I tried disabling NFC but it had no effect. My phone is the international version (the box was in Polish) which is not warrantied through Samsung USA, so I guess I'm out of luck there as well. I'm just gonna hang in there until the next Nexus phone, I guess.

When will people realize that the difference in voltage won't cause any problems with the phone as long as they're within safe range.
I've been using the charger that came with my G2 (htc) on my nexus for months and have no problems. I would've continued using the original one that came with the nexus but it had an annoying whine to it.

Really because it sure seemed to be my problem a while back and anytime i use a different one. Guess samsung and google must not know what theyre talking about.
Chargers are rarely the problem, however different usb cables might be the problem instead.

Am using samr original charger and cord. Works fine
I have this same issue
My Galaxy Nexus from Verizon has worked flawlessly for several months now. It updated about 4 days ago to JellyBean 4.1.1 and I have been charging the same two wall chargers, car charger, and USB cables every day since I got the phone. I even was using the USB charger to deploy and debug a simple application I am building around noon today. This evening at about 8 PM while on the wall charger I noticed the charging stopped. No lightening bolt icon, status says Discharging, and I noticed one time that it said Not Charging. Neither of the wall chargers work, nor is it recognized by the laptop using the USB cable. It is at 65% charge and is dropping fast. It seems that no one has a fix for this other than replace the phone.
Very difficult for me to believe that the USB port just went bad using the same chargers every day. Hard to blame JellyBean that has run at least 4 days with no issue even though several sites point to a possible charging issue. I even dialed *#*#4636#*#* and checked the battery status, and it's health was good. I have not rooted or placed anything on this phone that is obscure beyond my simple near "hello world" development apps. I have rebooted, and performed a battery pull with no such luck. With the number of posts pointing to a JellyBean issue, and users experiencing the same issue after the upgrade to 4.1.1 I am leaning towards this being a software issue, but it is interesting at the number of posts saying that the their only fix is a refurb phone replacement from the carrier.
Pretty odd occurrence, and extremely frustrating. As I said the phone worked fine all day today. This just started a few hours ago for me.

OK I have fixed my issue. and it does appear to have been hardware related. I will preface this with you must be very careful not to break your phone with the solution below. I read several posts about using contact cleaner on the USB port, so I looked at the port on the phone and noticed that the "toungue" inside the reciever USB port appeared to be slightly bent down. With the phone off and battery removed I used a needle to wedge under the toungue and bend it up ever so slightly making sure I would not break it. Pluged in the phone and it still did not charge. (That was last night) this morning with the phone at 55% and thinking it was going to need to go back to Verizion I did it again phone off and battery removed only this time a bit more forcefully out of desperation. I definitely moved the "toungue" up and even had a bit of difficulty getting the USB cord to slide back into the connector. But when it did the Phone is charging again. Appearantly I must of jammed the plug into the phone upside down last night when getting into my car and bent the "tongue" in the USB port. Lesson learned, and hope this helps others.
Means the battery has been recharged and discharged to the point were it holds less of the charge. Basically its an older battery, or its been tappered with with, probably a rom using to much ram or pussing the device a bit too far nightly and ported roms could be the cause I say stick to stock kernal unless you really now what to do
Scrap that wrong fourm I think

Charging issue, phone does not charge at all, bad USB port?

Please help!!
So, for the last couple weeks charging my Note 2 has been extremely hit or miss. It either connects and starts charging, or it doesn't at all. Sometimes, I can plug it in and leave it over night and find it didn't charge at all. Sometimes, as I am trying all sort of different chargers/options, I eventually give up and several hours later I see the screen pop to life and show a charge coming in. I have tried:
4 different cables
3 different AC chargers
2 different computers (multiple USB ports on each)
my car's USB
Seem to have no effect on whether or not it will charge, which makes me believe the issue is either the phones USB port or the battery itself.
Behavior when plugged varies, sometimes:
Completely dead - no response at all
Empty battery icon (with circle in middle) shows on screen, then goes black - never progresses to the battery charging icon (no circle in middle, green showing progress)
Works, progresses to green battery icon.
I'm currently in the first option - completely dead. Whenever I get to the 3rd one, I let it charge a bit then turn the phone on and let it continue charging. At this point it will generally work for a while but whenever I unplug the phone there is no guarantee it will work again, even right after.
Has anyone experienced this? Any experts have an idea I can try?
Notes:
Rooted with Perseus kernel, stock rom.

With this, I can at least charge the batteries outside of the phone, even if the USB port won't work. If necessary, I would need this to revert to stock before sending in to Samsung.
I had the one where you plug in and nothing, all I did was a battery pull and it worked, no issues since

It sounds to me like you have a broken micro usb port. I went thru this with my note 1. The plastic sleeve on your phone port that the pins sit in is fragile.in my case I discovered I had snapped a pin in half prevent charging, reading the phone via micro usb..I would get a intermittent connection then after a while nothing. you can try to see what happens if plug in a USB and wiggle it in all directions to try and establish contact..in any case your best bet is to go find a universal battery charger..particularly one that charges the battery itself without the phone. (it basically sits inside of a cradle and charges) the pins can be adjusted to make contact on your +,- on your battery. After a charge try it out. they have cheap ones a radio shack that do the job. Its a hassle, but on the bright side is your phone will work. Plus deep cycle charging will make for a healthier battery . hope this helps

Are you using a case on your device? If so, does it in any way encroach on the USB port?
If you are using a case try taking it off and plugging in with the stock charger and cable.
Couldn't hurt, and if the case blocks the port in any way it may be the solution.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement
Thanks for the replies everyone, and yes I ordered the battery kit from Amazon, so I should be up and running. At least to revert to stock before sending it to Samsung. But still I would like to find a permanent solution for this if possible.

Yes, this sounds like my problem. Battery pull fixed it for me originally too, but over time it got worse and the problem happened more frequently.
Haven't been able to get it to take a charge all day.
Thought I would update on this weird issue...
I received the Anker batteries/external charger and got the phone working again. Tested charging directly with the phone and new batteries now that it was back alive. No dice. Tested it on and off over the next couple days and still could not get it to charge. So I decided I needed to send it in for warranty replacement, but life got in the way and I continued my cycle of swapping out batteries. This is actually a really nice solution! I like having a couple fully charged batteries ready to go at all times.
Anyway, yesterday I finally had some time and was going to contact Samsung. I was sitting at my desk and decided to try charging one more time. Plugged in the microUSB cable and... IT WORKED! I have no idea why it would randomly start working again, but it has worked for the last 24 hours every time I plug it in.
So now I can't really send it in for service if they can't duplicate the problem. I'm just going to cross my fingers and hope it doesn't happen again...

Wondering if this ever started back up, or if your phone just kept on working. As my phone has stopped all together charging and needed to find a fix for this. Wondering if just replacing the usb charging port in the phone would fix this up. Has someone has done this already to fix this problem. I'm torn between using an external charger and wait for the part to come in from ebay for 12 bucks or just send it in for service and be without a phone for 3-6 weeks.

I've been using an external charger for a couple of weeks now. It's a bit of a pain, but you quickly get used to it.
I'm holding out for the announcement of the Note 3 and hoping that arrives sometime before Christmas!
Well it was the USB port on the phone sent it away already got it back. Telus my provider warranty'd the phone. Did get a quote to fix at a cell shop 70 buckaroo's. Personally just buy it online at ebay for 10 bucks and do it yourself not that hard. Just didn't want to wait for the part to ship and get here
Do you know the process to it... by the looks of it, it seems attached to the motherboard or is it something I can easily do thanks in advance...

Phone will not charge / freezes when plugged in

Hey guys,
I just upgraded to a Note II from a Captivate. I've had it for about month completely stock, in the last I'd say 3 days I've been having this really frustrating problem. Whenever I go to charge the phone, it will charge for only a second or two and stop. Sometimes it will go back and from charge, stop, charge stop. But also when this happens the phone freezes up. If I have low battery, every time it stops charging that window pops up stating low battery, but I can never close the window because the phone is frozen. The back and menu haptic buttons will not work as well, the only option is to use the physical home key. I have to restart it several times to get it to charge, and make sure the screen turns off since sometimes it won't.
Has anyone else had any trouble like this? Any advice would be great. Thank you!
Factory reset
This sounds like a physical defect to me, the note 1 was plagued with it. Have you tried wiggling the cord in the slot?
Now that I reread your post I would be taking that device into where you bought it and have them document the issue. Since your stock this is an easy process and having it documented at the local retailer will (according to att customer service) increase your chance of getting a new device over a refurb.

I tried a Factory Reset, I plugged the phone in right after and didn't have any problem so I thought okay maybe that did it. Went through the rest of my day without trying again. Now, trying again before bed only to find that when I plug it in now, it charges for a second, stops, then brings up the notification that the dock has been attached. I'll be taking it back to At&t tomorrow and will report my findings. Thanks for the help thus far.

Was having a similar problem with mine. Okay usually when I would charge it it would stop and then restart. Additionally, I noticed that I could not connect to any computer or USB on the go devices as it would not recognize them. In the end I went with my Samsung phone to the service center near me and they repaired a defective module for the USB port on the spot. Now it works like brand-new.
Honestly this sounds like a bad cable. A dirty in port in the phone. Or a wet connection. Try using rubbing alcohol and qtips or smaller cleaners. Give it a couple minutes to evaporate when done. If that doesn't fix it your phone has internal issues. Stock. Triangle away. Ask for a replacement. Will be fulfilled. Especially if problem is provable.

I apologize for the delayed reply. I waited for the phone to do its charging fit at home before taking it to AT&T....twice...I went to two separate stores because both are so close to me, and BOTH times the phone did not do it while charging in their store. I told them I have been using the Samsung charging cable and block, along with some other from different android phones, and all were giving the either stop / start charge with freeze, or the stop/start charge, "dock is connected," freeze. They told me it must be a bad block, and that the other chargers I am using aren't providing enough amps, hence why the phone gets crazy. I just thought to myself, you've got to be kidding me. So I went back, stopped using the block I got with the phone, I found my girlfriends usb power adapters from one of her old Apple devices (...I know right..) and used that along with the Samsung cable. So far, I haven't had a problem with it. I also tried my neighbor's charger from her S3, and that worked fine when I tried it. The phone does still do the described problem when it's plugged into other chargers, even my car charger. I might try cleaning the port itself as suggested and see if that does anything. Also was suggested by the AT&T rep to get a charger that's "high amp," so I'll give that a try as well. It just doesn't seem normal to have to go through all of that trouble though, I don't think Samsung would make their phone not be compatible with other micro usb charger devices?

Please Advise! Battery Disconnect Problems.

Hey XDA, what's good? OK so my wife's note 2 was stolen and we received what I am guessing is a refurbished one from our wireless insurance provider. The first day we got it I noticed the popup (battery disconnected) when I plugged in the charger. Now it's been about a week and the phone only charges when I play with it by pulling out the battery, putting it back in, and turning it on (a few times usually). Otherwise, sometimes it will just hang on the battery screen and the charging animation freezes and then, up pops the dreaded yellow triangle with a battery in it. So, I have been begging her to just let me root and flash a different rom/kernel combo, but she wants/likes it stock , (which is nbd, could flash the stock tw Rom), and the company who supplied the phone to our insurance provider wants us to ship it back so they can either replace, or fix the phone. Funny thing is, Sprint techs wanted nothing to do with it! We dropped it off as they asked and not even 20 min later they called and said come get it we can't fix it!? So, here is my dilemma, could this b a software issue? Or is flashing a Rom not a possible fix? I've tried other usb cords and checked the usb port, battery/phone terminals, and tried gently moving the usb plug around to see if it was the issue, as I've had Samsungs in the past with similar problems. Any help would be awesome! Thanx, from one Android junkie to another.
