360 back casing cracking again. - Moto 360

So I bought my 360 back in February of 2015. In December of 2015 Motorola replaced it because the back of the casing was cracking where the band connects to the watch.
Pretty common issue, I know.
The rep said it was a design flaw that had been addressed and wouldn't happen again on the next one. He reassured me by adding 90 days to my original warranty.
So here we are on May of 2016 and the new 360 is cracking again. Keep in mind that I have the OEM band on. I have not replaced it with any after market band.
Motorola wants to send me ANOTHER 360 1st gen. Only problem is that this next one will be out of warranty by the time it cracks again.
Has anyone had any luck with Motorola and their warranty depart replacing their 1st Gen with a second gen, even it is a refurbished unit?
Pretty frustrating how Motorola admits that the 1st Gen definitely was flawed and could care less about the on going issue.

For those curious about that plastic insert on metal banded 360s...

When I saw the plastic inserts on the metal band Moto 360, I got excited because I thought Moto had finally rectified the issue with the potential cracking back. I was hoping/assuming that it would be a softer plastic insert to absorb some of the pressure put on it by the metal band. Well, if you take a look at the attached pics, you will see that, unfortunately, I was wrong. The plastic is VERY brittle. I was wearing the watch when I tilted my wrist reaching for something and heard a snap/pop sound. I thought for sure the back just cracked, but it had not. Instead the part of the plastic insert that sits between the band and the back completely snapped off. Now, (it's kind of hard to tell but) it looks like the metal is now pushing up against the back. It's obvious that metal beats plastic as evidenced by the fate of the insert. So I'd imagine it's only a very short matter of time before the back cracks. Oh, and this happened LESS THAN 24 HOURS after purchasing the watch. I'm wondering if maybe the insert may have been slightly cracked to begin with because the other one seems fine. Also, this is already my SECOND metal 360, as the first had what was either a tiny bubble or some sort of reflective debris under the screen.
Has anybody else had this issue with the inserts? I'm wondering if I should exchange it, or just get a refund and wait for the 2nd gen Moto 360. Other than this issue, I REALLY LOVE this watch, which is why I'm struggling with returning it.
FULL DISCLOSURE: I do have tiny, girly-man wrists, and I wear the watch somewhat loose as I like to wear my watches lower on my wrist (closer to my hand, pretty much resting on it).
Pictures:
1) Pic of broken insert
2) Pic of other side still intact
3) Profile shot to see the difference when hanging. Can see the broken side resting against the back.

Mine just snapped, same thing. No way in * am i going to send this back and wait four months for a replacement that will most likely have dead pixels or other issues after the h**l ive been through getting this one shipped to me from them the first time and all the cracked backs for other people with OEM bands that are leather. If they refuse to send me replacement plastic links at no cost free expedited shipping I'm going to file every consumer fraud report on them that exists after the bs they are putting me and others through with the nexus 6.
The content should speak for itself
Ryan: Hi, my name is Ryan. How may I help you?
Gary: Hi My name is Gary, My email is ************@gmail.com, I just spoke to a representative Eddie over at moto maker online chat support, reference number 141129-015287. I have a 22mm natural steel moto360(Serial #P0******GX) that I have had for less then a week. Before this version I had the horween leather version bought from best buy, I returned the leather version within 14 days because the back of the watch cracked from the leather strap putting pressure on the plastic back(Sic design flaw). I ordered the 22mm natural steel band version from you directly online at your site with moto care insurance. Today the plastic link that you added between the 22mm steel watch band and the watch body to correct said design flaw snapped on one side -- this IS a user serviceable part, when you purchase the 22mm natural steel watch band for $80 seperately it comes with this tiny plastic peice, and users are able to get new metal links sent to them when requested as well which are much harder to put on yet are STILL user serviceable parts. Well, Eddie insured me I could have a replacement plastic link protector peice sent to me and gave me this number to call to speak to the moto360 specialists: 866-320-4780 Well I called them, I spoke to jose who told me that I would have to return the watch and wait two weeks for a full replacement, this is absurd, there's not a damn thing wrong with the watch or watch band, I demanded to speak to the manager, and Jose hung up on me. I'm not returning my watch and going without it for two weeks after the hell ive been through just to get a tiny plastic peice worth less than a penny -- if that's the case I'll just wait until the back of the watch completely snaps or smash it myself because you guys created a faulty design and then motorola is out more money not me as they will have to replace it no questions asked. If there's some other resolution here I would be glad to hear about it as would everyone else with this problem over on xda and the other android forums who I will be reporting to with our chat transcript, any support is appreciated.

Ryan: This is for repair?
Gary: Yes.
Ryan: I do apologize for that.
Ryan: Let me transfer you to right department, is that okay?
Gary: It seems like alot of time and trouble to go through to get the tiny plastic user servicable part.. you know? Thank you. That would be very appreciated.
Ryan has disconnected.
Mak: Hi, my name is Mak. How may I help you?
Gary: Hi Mak, I'm not sure if you can, I hope so! Are you able to see the previous chat transcripts?
Gary: Let me say ahead of time I'm in a real bad mood after dealing with some of the phone support guys at moto, so please don't take it personally.
Mak: I understand you with that.
Mak: Yes I can see the previous chat transcript.
Mak: Please give me a minute to read it first.
Gary: If this isn't a user servicable part you guys can send out -- you really have to make it one.
Gary: the watch band is supposed to be user changable.. it's just a tiny plastic peice that slips over the band when you attach the band.
Gary: They added it to prevent the problems that were happening with the backs cracking on the leather versions.
Mak: Will this for the Moto 360 device?
Gary: Yeah exactly. the 22mm natural steel moto360
Gary: In this link there are photos of the peice: http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...nsert-metal-banded-360s-t2953580#post57120023
Gary: there's alot of people that are popping up on the various android forums that are having this issue.
Mak: In this case sir since you have reached the Technical support for Android phones, I have to give you a call and transfer you over to our Moto 360 department.
Gary: Would it be possible to get the number for the moto360 specialists? was it the correct number before?
Gary: It seems silly that they want to spend the time and employee resources instead of sending me the tiny plastic peice that's worth less then a penny
Gary: they don't have them to spare with the nexus 6 stuff going on
Mak: Sure. Please give me one minute.
Mak: Here is the number that you can call 8663204780.
Gary: That's a bummer, that's the number I called previously..
Gary: Is there a way you could escalate this to some one in charge of moto360 returns and repairs? they really need to be made aware of this issue
Gary: if we are allowed to change watch bands ourselves.. and this plastic peice is a part of the band.. it seems it should be a user servicable part
Mak: Yes. I will and I will let our higher management know about this as well.
Gary: Thank You Mak.
Gary: I really appreciate that
Mak: You are very much welcome.
Mak: Will there be anything else?
Gary: I'll try again with the moto360 phone support. Have a good holiday season mak
Mak: Happy holiday as well Sir.

So i'm just going to wear it until the back snaps, then take a sledgehammer to it and send it back to them in peices in an envelope for return.
I'll continue to do this until they fix the user support problems, eventually they will get tired of me costing them money on watches.
I just want to add, that after being passed around alot more online chat support people who were "in the wrong department to assist me" and being hung up on a few times I finally found my way to the moto360 forum on motorola.com's official website.
I posted my problem there and I was actually able to get some real help from people that knew what I was talking about, and it seems like this issue is going to be passed up the food chain so that hopefully I and others in the future who break this plastic protector peice do not have to do a full rma return procedure.
Nothing has come of it yet, but it sounds promising, I will update when further progress is made.

Yeah. I decided to return mine and not even bother with an exchange. I don't want to have to worry about RMAing it every month for a cracked back, especially since it appears to be a lottery on whether you get a good unit or not. Since I LOVED having an Android Wear device, I knew I'd miss having one. So I lucked out and picked up a LG G Watch for $80 + a $50 Google Play credit from Best Buy yesterday (so probably cost me like $40 after selling the code for like $40). Yeah, it's not as pretty as the Moto 360 is, but that price was too good to pass up. Hopefully, it should get me by until they fix the issue or come out with the 2nd gen 360. Having notifications at a glance is so much more convenient than I ever thought it would be. Good luck to you and everyone waiting for them to rectify the issue. I really do hope Moto get their act together for you guys.
My watch had the black plastic piece break as well after two weeks. Of course it happened after the two week best buy return period. The black piece is still installed, just had a few pieces break off. I figure I'll wait a week or two for a Motorola response.
I'm on my 2nd watch. Bought it from BestBuy and got the 2 year replacement too. They took the first one back because of the cracked back. It was a full semicircle from each side of the band. I googled a bit and found Moto saying its a warranty issue for cracking backs. I'm extra cautious now with mine. Even if its not an issue and no one ever sees it, I know the crack is there. I have about 21 months still of replacements from BestBuy. My bet is that a new model will be out within 2 years and eventually I'll get store credit towards a new one.
One of my little black spacers just cracked too. Only been wearing the watch since Christmas. Any updates on the people just trying to get this one piece replaced?
Ill have to try to contact moto when I get off of work today.
I received my 360 for Christmas from my wife (silver metal band)...the day after Christmas, I felt something poking my wrist while wearing the watch...one of the black spacers was cracked and had a sharp point on it.
I had tried going the route of chat help and calling the support number...
Every rep I spoke to (about 5) was telling me that they do not make these spacers for individual replacement. I would have to send my watch in to have it repaired...or I could purchase a new band and it would come with the new spacers. I told them that this was absolutely unacceptable to me.
...I went to Twitter and asked for help with this issue...that afternoon I received a response from them asking for my name and information. I was told that someone would be in touch with me soon (which I was expecting the run around again). To my surprise, when I came home from work the next day...there was a fedex envelope for me containing 4 spacers.
Needless to say, the sharp piece ended up falling off but the band still feels pretty solid. I have opted to hold off on replacing it until I actually need one, but I'm grateful that they were able to replace it (and send me a few extras just in case).
Help is out there...just have to go to a public audience to get it
I have questions about the help you get from the Moto chat...one rep was telling me that they do not use any plastic on the metal band version, that I must have purchased a different device or a counterfeit and that I would have to go to a local jeweler for help fixing my watch.

Well after reading about all the cracked backs due to the steel bands I have decided on remains with my leather band.
The design of the 360 is fantastic look wise but has an inherently bad flaw due to the position of the band and pin locations. Yes there is a design flaw.
I have had other Moto products, I had a Moto x first generation and very familiar with moto's design flaws. The Moto x had a Kevlar back which cracked and yes mine did crack in around the volume and power buttons.
I guess sometimes beautiful designs don't always work as planned.
I do think Moto has and will improve upon their next generation Moto 360 or design pin attachments that sits tight in the band slot.
If I had the right tools or time I could easily design an attachment that would prevent the steel band from cracking the plastic back.

Pretty close, although I would prefer if that extension pin would be fixed. I would have also preferred if screws would be used rather than the typical expansion wrist band pins, this would allow for much easier and user friendly customization
Just and update. Going the twitter route worked out well. Received two plastic spacers today priority through FedEx. All I had to really do was send a pic in an email.
I did go ahead and order the m180 from steelconnect for when these spacers break. Might have to get another band as the moto band probably won't look right with it. Will have to wait and see.
Overall I was impressed with the moto support I had through twitter/email.

Congratulations on getting some help through twitter! What users helped you out in receiving your information?
call this 1-800-734-5870
they are aware. they are sending me a pair and i requested if possible to give me 4pcs and they said yes.
i hope the plastic on my black metal band doesn't give out
since i'm in Canada, i'm not sure i'll receive the same level of support
I guess it pays to have a big wrist. I've had my 360 since September with a bunch of different bands both metal and leather with no cracked back. But, with a big wrist the band leaves the watch perpendicular to the housing and doesn't touch the back.

If you wear your watch literally on your wrist where your joint moves, then this will be the reason why you were able to break the plastic inserts. By wearing it on my arm, no matter how far I bend my wrist naturally, it doesn't cause any pressure that could break the plastic inserts or the back.
It's likely how you're wearing the watch that's the cause.

Moto 360 3 Days old Metal Band has cracks in plastic where it inserts into the watch

Well all and all this kinda bums me out but i'm kinda happy in the end because when I fist seen it I was thinking it was the watch its self but after looking at others watches with other bands on them. it appears my watch band is cracked (chipped). Not sure if I want to try and swap it at Best Buy, Add the 2 year warranty (Witch I usually feel is a rip off) , try and take the plastic pieces out, Leave it alone (but I still might add the warranty?)???? What do you guys think? Did anyone else get their extended 2 year warranty for 50$? I just have a hard time coughing that up when 299$ was allot for me to come off of in the fist place. In all reality I don't want to return it I love the watch and I'am really happy to watch Android wear grow through its early stages just as i did Android. but this is all a bit frustrating for a Device in some ways i'm so happy with.
P.S. On another note can't wait to see the New watch Faces I have herd about that we might see this week and Lollipop 5.0 but I know we have been hearing that for some time now but ill keep my fingers crossed.
Sorry not the best pics its late and not very easy to get a good pic at that angle.
I think you should try to have it swapped for a new one. The crack might have an impact on water resistance, especially when it's as significant as the one you have.
This is super disappointing. I was hoping the plastic spacers would be the solution to the problem....
i bought the watch thinking Hey its Motorola, the best design etc. only to find this VERY VERY flimsy cheap plastic back cover which flex and bends on any presure.. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!?! I waited untill they released the metal band version , paid BOOCOO for it only to find this weak spot on the back. Now I am paranoid about having anything including the band touch the plastic backing. Im expecting any day to have cracks in the back with normal usage. Motorola better replace this thing imediatly when I find ANY cracks, this better be a no brainer exchange at least up to a year after purch. I will not except any excuse for NOT replacing this thing with type of fatal flaw in the design. they knew about the backing. Im sure its fixed in moto2 coming soon.... this seems like the samsung 1 gen watch all over again....
Moto should fix the back ASAP and offer replacement backings or watches to anyone who has paid primi pricing for this first gen watch.
I was contemplating on buying the official metal band, as I thought that the spacers would prevent back cracks. Seems like I just have to wait for my Steelconnect adaptors to arrive.
If you do submit it for RMA, make sure you do the option where you pay for your new watch up front then receive the refund once your watch reaches Motorola.
If you leave it up to Motorola to exchange your watch after they receive it you're going to have a bad time. I don't wish that 26 day experience upon anyone.
From what I can see after taking the band off its only the plastic pieces for the band that are cracked the back of the watch is fine.

Same. I already bought an aftermarket brand metal band and was about to spend the full $80 on the motorola band just to get that plastic spacer. Glad I saw this post first!

This is good advice. I called over the weekend and chose the pay up front option. The replacement watch was at my house by Wednesday, and I am a happy camper. Save for my new fear of the plastic spacers not preventing more cracking....

Free metal band and extra charger from Moto

In November I had a problem where my Moto 360 battery dropped like a rock. About 50% per hour. After a couple of days I called Motorola. Very nice folks. I have a silver Moto 360 with a grey band. They said they'd send a replacement immediately and gave me a FedEx label to return my old one. The next day my original 360 was back to normal. I decided that I'd still do the switch just in case it was a hardware issue.
The replacement 360 never came. I didn't think much of it since my original one was working fine. About a month later I got a call from Motorola saying that my replacement watch was on back order. They asked if I wanted another model. No thanks, I said, I'll just keep waiting. January, same thing. Phone call, my silver one was on backorder, would I like another one. No thanks.
Then, in February the battery burn happened again. But, went away after a reset. They called again in February but this time to tell me that my silver with grey was still back ordered. This time I asked what models they had available for replacement. The only silver one was with a metal band. More expensive? I asked. No, just a one for one replacement. Ok, I said. I'm not a fan of metal bands but I have other leather ones I can use.
It came in two days. In original store packaging with a charger. As if I just bought this at Best Buy. Included was a generic brown box to return my old one. I called and asked if they wanted the old charger, too. Nope. So, I just sent my original 360 with the watch band in the brown box. Now I have a silver metal band and a second charger.
Thanks, Motorola, for great service.
The same thing happened to me. My stainless steek moto 360 with gray band had crack on the back. I was given a runaround a few times. I had to keep calling to ask for updates. After 2 weeks I got a moto 360 replacement with matel band n got to keep the charger .

Gen 1 Replacement Back - Where to Find?

Anybody know where to find a replacement back cover for a Gen 1? I just replaced my battery, and everything went fine except for the back cracking. None of the sites I've checked have them in stock, and I doubt they'll be getting more. Moto won't sell the back, and I don't feel like sending to them for $ervice.

Need a new band

Hi fellow forum members. I've had my moto 360 1st generation for 2 years now. I noticed yesterday that my leather band is splitting apart. The watch still works fine, so I'd hate to shell out $200 for a new watch. Back when I first purchased the watch Motorola sold official "dodo" leather straps on their site, but it seems that they're no longer available. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good replacement band that won't break the bank? Thanks
Amazon or eBay maybe they have them

You should have looked at the other posts in this sub-forum; about 1/3 of them already discuss 3rd party watch bands for the Moto 360.
