Marshmallow Update Confirmed- May 8th! - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 4

I was curious as to when MM would rollout to the AT&T Note 4, and the representative gave me the date May 8th, or a week from today. Good news!

Yeah!
Can someone tell me if I can upgrade by odin?

I'd take that reps word with a very large grain of salt...
They notoriously lie. It reads like they are a not a native English speaker, so I'm going to assume offshore tech support and I doubt that they'd have exact time frames.
I'll be pleasantly surprised if it rolls out then, but I'm not holding my breath.

Well supposedly on the r/galaxynote4 subreddit, someone talked to an ATT rep and they said May 16th.
(Sauce: https://www.reddit.com/r/galaxynote4/comments/4gri24/marshmallow_is_coming_to_att_note4_on/)
Anything between the 8th and 16th would be fantastic.

You'll have to wait until someone can get the files together... Not really sure where/how they do that though...

That somebody better get the files tho #tempted

Yea an Odin flashable MM update for the note 4 would be cool. Shame we still dont have root....

My need for root disappears with Marshmallow... My only concern is being able to sandbox apps from accessing contacts, personal info, etc. This functionality is baked into Marshmallow. Know others want it for other reasons, but for me, at least they are giving me the functionality I need. Used to not be able to back up calls, sms, mms, etc. but that functionality is available too... Used to need to backup apps, but all my apps now backup to the cloud... At least Google is giving us functionality. I read somewhere, they are trying to give people the functionality most root their devices for.

I talked to another rep and she said the MM update already went out on 3/4/16, and that the MM update slides just the Note 4's into an alternate dimension, which is probably why we haven't seen it update yet. LOL
Seriously though I would be interested to see what the MM update actually does with this device... so I guess I'll keep trying to update starting next week... or the next... or the next... or after Obama leaves offfice next year...

I received the notification for the update but did not yet choose to download it yet.

Still waiting for 6.0.1 Odin files.....

Checked to soon because I still had a 3 hour wait. Fast forwarded my clock and it says my current software is up to date. Guess you didn't update since the last security update since there's been 2 pretty close to each other.

Fast forwarded the date to tomorrow, checked for an update; still shows system currently up to date. No MM here.

I know that works if the update is actually available at that time, but I didn't think that worked if the update hasn't been "officially" released yet. Either way, it would be the first time they released an update on a Sunday (Mothers Day no less) wouldn't it? I don't think it's legit. I've had dozens of reps tell me they aren't informed "until a few days before an update is released usually." I think we'll be without Marshmallow until I upgrade to the Note 6. Then I'll be dying to know when Nougat (whatever Android N is called) is coming. And I'll be disappointed somehow LOL.

Im finding it kinda odd that i have not taken either of the security updates but now that i reenabled the updater it shows no update and that my phone is current.... did at&t pull the security update? Or is it a prelude to mm hitting their server soon?? I have all but given up on root for the at&t variant. So i will gladly move on to the mm update and maybe it will gix some overheating issues with the oculus galaxy vr inovators edition (doubtful) but still worth a try.

Yes i have the innovators edition the first unit to publicly come out and yes it is 1000% worth it the 360 stills are so realistic its like you are there. And the ammount of free video content is awesome. I can also switch it into developers mode and use all the google cardboard apps as well like roller coaster simulators. There are a few games available for it as well my favorite types of those are similar to a roller coaster except you are a pilot of a ship and u use the side touch pannel to shoot in the direction you are looking. There is also a built in vr cinima where it feels and looks like you are setting in a full fledged movie theater here you can watch 3d movies, your personal video files. There is also milk vr by samsung that has a decent content library including a little vr cartoon about a but her and a rabbit. There is a app from oculus home that jas a cool ride thru an insane aasylum called catatonic and it scares the crap outa most people i tried it on one went as far as to rip the b ead gear off and throw it luckily i cought it lol.
But to sum it up. It is awesome. You can literally go any where in the world almost like being there while standing in your living room or setting in a a swivel chair.

I know this just shows the pessimist in me (or what I feel about VZW's track record, because I think it would be more them than HTC), but also from that blog:
"For more background, due to how storage on the HTC Desire HD is partitioned – and the larger size of Android 4.0 – it would require re-partitioning device storage and overwriting user data in order to install this update. While technically advanced users might find this solution acceptable, the majority of customers would not. We also considered ways to reduce the overall size of the software package, but this would impact features and functionality that customers are currently using. Even after installing the update, there were other technical limitations which we felt negatively impacted the user experience."
Is Verizon willing to lose some stupid bundled apps to make sure it can fit on our Dinc2? I imagine they could save plenty of space by not bundling NFL Mobile, etc...
My 2 cents.

Do you have a link to when they said June or July?
The only eta I ever read was August... I don't think we have anything to worry about personally, but only time will tell. I don't really care as long as they release kernel source for at least one of the other variations of the dinc2 that already has official ics. I have given up on sense roms anyways since I switched to ics.

They've already released ics for the Chinese or whatever it was version, so don't they need to give kernel source for that even if we don't get it?

kernel source from oem's is a murky proposition at best....ideally source would be available as soon as an update is out, but htc hides behind their typical (90-120 days after release) window....though (thunderbolt gb update) they have released source on the same day as an update
i have no idea why they pull this, since theres nothing to change/add to the kernel since its already released, but there isnt much to do on our end...short of suing them
so idk

Well for one DesireHD is not the Incredible S/2. Second, it's not about your or me or this site it's about the larger customer base so HTC is acting in best interest of their own company to not release something that could make a lot (more than here, rootz, ac, etc) of people pissed off. Always keep in mind we are the smaller, much smaller, segment of a larger industry.

Also keep on mind that that larger user base usually doesn't know what software version their phone has and they probably think GB is the latest since their phone says up to date if they check under software updates. It's true that we're a smaller segment of a larger group, but we're the ones that keep up with this kind of stuff and actually care about updates on time. Other users could care less as long as their phone gets the job done.

Well Verizon or HTC haven't said anything about the Inc2 since the initial memo. Again going by e DesireHD is wrong since its not the same phone. Verizon or HTC saying "well research and see" would still cause you to be mad. If the IncS got it the Inc2 should be getting it they're identical phones for the most part.

Note 4 getting another over-the-air update, Will AT&T get this one?

I know we didn't get the first firmware update, that supposedly increased battery usage, performance etc, but maybe we get this one?
http://www.sammobile.com/2014/11/21/samsung-galaxy-note-4-getting-another-over-the-air-update/
That's for international phones and since we are not rooted and don't have custom recovery for AT&T we can't use it
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A
I'm sure you will see one shortly anyways for the gear vr . It was stated during oculus connect that a ota will have to roll out in front of the release. Which the release is scheduled for beginning of December. That is unless the update will only push if you have it connected to the VR. I guess only time will tell.
AT&T (who should have no involvement in device updates, but in this great country of ours, does) could do 1 of 3 things
1) Release the first update, then the second, then lollipop (least likely)
2) Release a combined update with both the first and second updates (possible, though unlikely, maybe this is why the didn't bother with the first one)
3) Don't release anything ecept Lollipop. Logically, it would contain any previous updates in the 5.0 build (most likely what will happen)
#3 seems to be the main choice. I can't understand why AT&T or any other carrier would spend a single cent on software and development. It doesn't seem to fit what they do. They can push in their bloatware without holding back on everything. Maybe they do stability testing, and ensuring it doesn't effect the network stability, which I would understand, but minor updates are way toooooo hard to trickle down from the manufacturer to the end user.
I was in bestbuy , all there phones are international. They all had a software update waiting. You couldn't stop it or force quit it, it was awesome. But with that said, the demo software security policy was making the update fall. Just about everyone of there note 4 was in endless full boot, try upgrade, restart.
I think I should asking, when does the AT&T Note 4 get Lollipop? Next Christmas in 2015?

Yea I can't believe that situation with the gear vr needing a firmware update to work. If it's left to the carriers, a lot of early adopters may be stuck waiting. It doesn't work on any retail version of the phone right now, according to the oculus forums.

Well, they like to test and quality the updates to make sure they don't enable features they don't allow or break their network. It's their network, so that's their right - as a free enterprise business in this great country we live in.
When you start your own billion dollar wireless network, you can approve updates however you see fit. Until then...

Wow... a bit aggressive of a response (but thats the internet for ya). Not many people here defending the carriers.
The international devices are not managed in the same way. I certainly understand testing for their network, but I am sure that the international networks are not crashing from lack of testing. The system in the US is out of date. Few, would argue it. Google certainly seems to thing so, they are unbundling much of their software to avoid dealing with the carriers on updates. Other companies like HTC have also begun releasing their included software as separate apps that can be updated via google play. There are many threads throughout XDA that call for eliminating the carriers from the updates system. I see it happening at some point, though not soon.
I for one am not against their blocking root. I like root, I have rooted many devices, but hacking a device to put on their network that can break their network, or exploit their resources, is an understandable precaution, however, withholding a firmware update issued by the manufacturer that provides either improved usability of a device, or fixes for discovered flaws seems extremely anti consumer and wrong.
I am very pro business, I don't hate the carriers, I understand what they do, and why they do it. I just don't like this 1 thing about them. Simple. I still want to know why they waste any of their resources on holding back and doing whatever to the updates before rolling them out, if they roll them out at all. If I had a GPE device or a Nexus device, they don't block the upgrades. iPhone either. (and I seriously doubt much advanced testing gets done on them by the carriers)
That is a great point at the end. IPhone. For as big as they've gotten, they don't block updates. I know people will say there aren't as many device variants etc. But most times the updates are available and carriers or specific manufactures hold them back or never release them.
AT&T blocking carrier firmware updates? Do we have any proof of this, or are we only assuming? I have heard in times past, this is what Google did to market the Android OS to the major carriers to get leaway on Apple. To make this "new" OS very appealing. To gain leverage.
1: to the device manufacturers - a free OS (or very cheep) that can be skinned to their hearts content.
2: to the carriers - to have any software installed, and not removed by customers. To have any form of limitations implemented for the sake of their business model.

It is being tested as we speak. Lollipop is a drastic code revision so they unfortunately have to make sure the "added" apps function properly. I'd be very surprised if it wasn't being released before Christmas.

Someone, somewhere (sorry, I don't remember exactly where) had a photo of the actual (allegedly) working document with time tables and status updates from Samsung for Lollipop. It listed the Note 4, but NOT the AT&T version as "Final Testing" due in "January 15"
However, the point of this conversation is that it won't be rolled out to the carriers at the same time as the Samsung responsibility models are. So that date means very little. Well, if history serves, I seriously doubt that AT&T will release it before Samsung releases the international versions.

@JasonJoel I just have to say, after reading your posts on this thread and another, I am pretty sure you are an AT&T Corp spy sent to XDA to get info and spin positive feedback for the company lol Kidding #notkidding

New leaked marshmallow schedule

http://www.slashgear.com/galaxy-s6-...ollout-leaked-with-updated-schedule-25424189/
Oh good, will have to wait to February now. Samsung is getting much worse with it's updates!
Fake!
Maybe it's fake but it's 25 of January and still nothing from Samsung except the beta testing....
In my opinion, Samsung still developing the android 6.0 or probably will jump directly to 6.0.1.. Since the new version of android is very vital to the user, Samsung has to make sure the new one is better than the previous one. Remember a lot of issues when upgrading from KitKat to Lollipop such as overheat in Galaxy S5. It seems Samsung is avoid the same mistakes again. If the information is correct, we shall going to enjoy the update in couple weeks..

you do realize s6/edge already have 6.0.1 beta right? So we don't need your opinion on what samsung is developing, because we already know that and as for the "new one is better than the previous one" statement I must say it's total bull**** and please stop defending samsung like they're some kind of a saint. Difference between lollipop and marshmallow is way to insignificant for them to need 5 months or more to release an update for their flagship line that costs an arm and a leg. And checking the 6.0.1 beta on s6/e, there's not much changed.. plus they had how much time if we count the release of marshmallow beta? Their competition already updated their flagships AND last gen flagships.. my dads LG G3 and moms HTC M8 both have marshmallow, and YES they BOTH perform much better than they did on lollipop. Especially the M8, which now runs much smoother than my s6e+.
Don't get me wrong, I love the hardware of the phone, but software wise samsung is still terrible, PLUS they suck with updates.
Right now it really just looks like that they will stall with the update until S7 is announced or maybe even released... beacuse business reasons I guess.

Right now it really just looks like that they will stall with the update until S7 is announced or maybe even released... beacuse business reasons I guess.

Just because of lack of updates comparing with the others doesn't means it comes bad.. Don't you realize that a lot of manufactures also have not applied marshmallow in their handset.. If you really want a quick update in your phone, then you can switch to another manufacture that give it like you just said. I don't defend samsung like a saint, but I am trying to be more realistic with the condition.

I know a lot of manufactures didn't update yet, but the main competition did, and samsung is just not giving enough effort into updating their software. I also completely understand that the majority of users simply don't care about updates, but why wouldn't they also please advanced users. I mean they could totally have released a beta update for the s6e+ and note 5 when they released it for s6/e and it would please me and all the other eager users, but now I feel punished for paying 300+ € over the s6. Even the S5 had some marhmallow "leaks".

Wow, i can't speak for everyone but I would like the update so my phone will work properly. I have poor reception on my phone, i cant really talk on my phone, get good internet connection, and have issues sending messages. I was advised by my wireless carrier and samsung, that the Marshmallow update would correct said problems. So maybe if they sold phones that worked properly out of the box, some of us wouldn't be crying for updates

I would if nexus 6p would have been released by the time I was buying the phone. Actually it's still not available in Slovenia, only 5x is, 6p is coming end of January/early February, and yes, I am considering switching with someone 1 for 1 for a nexus 6p when they will be available, even if it's 250€ cheaper. And I don't really consider it being "fast updates" for expecting an update 5 months after the release of the software by google.
Funny thing is that I'm arguing about software updates on xda forums.. correct me, but no one is developing hardware on this forum or are they?
Its ready when it ready. Having seen the beta on the S6 I dont think we are missing much, its almost exactly the same.
Im never in a big hurry to get Android updates, a new version is always buggy for at least 3 to 4 months anyway, and as yet there has been no real bug fix for 6. After being burned by Googles own devices on every launch version since 4.2, I'm happy to wait for Google to fix its mess before Samsung jump on it.
Much of the reason why OEM devices are slower to update is that Android contains a lot of bugs, which the OEMs want to minimise before they release. Google dont care so much about the Nexus, if its buggy its buggy, the OEMs dont want that though.
it's all BS.... This is my last Samsung phone. They have no respect at all for their costumers. I hope hope the Dutch law suit against them , screws them where they deserve.

Well said... People are always complaining about the delayed updates but if an update cames out with bugs they complain also... This makes me laugh... Aren't your phones working?
Before Lollipop was released everyone was complaining and when it cames out i saw a lot of them returning to KK... if you all say the difference is minimal so what's the hurry?
They need to slim down the touchwiz stuff which may speed up the update times

Will we see Root or Bootloader unlock?

Will this phone get rooted and or it's Bootloader unlocked? My vote is no considering the lack of success the devs had with the Note 5.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
its tough to say, as you mentioned, even the previous iteration of the note isn't rooted on Verizon (did not confirm that, just trusting you know what you're talking about lol) . However i believe the note 4 on Verizon did it root eventually (on retail that is, the dev version had root since day one for it) . Maybe some time in the note 7 being out the note 5 will get a reliable root method. Best thing to do is the hope for the best and expect the worst.
on a side note, when i had my dev edition note 4 it was upsetting due to the lack of Roms variety. I would look at the note 4 T-mobile forums and see it rooted and booming with choices of Roms. does anyone know, lets say in that case, if i had bought an unlocked T-mobile note 4 and activated it on verizon ( or if thats even possible), would i have been able to root and use those roms from the T-mobile forums?
** i dont mean to make little of the work Devs put in on Verizon roms (the ones i knew about before switching to a nexus 6p)

I myself had the dev edition and though there was a lack of Roms I enjoyed the cm rom from hsbadr.. I myself prefer vanilla android over TW but have not found a replacement for the stylus of the spen to use with the nexus 6's

I've always heard that Samsung was doing a lot better with TW in the note 5 , but the lack of SD card and removable battery left me salty. so it was the first time i deviated from the note line and decided to give pure stock a try. It very good but a little too boring for me at times. but the thing i will absolutely miss from the 6p is the fingerprint wake and unlock, it was so nice to be able to unlock and turn on the screen with just one gesture. Though on the flip side.. i've always wanted a phone that could survive water. though as i found out with wear watches, touchscreens dont respond well underwater lol. but in the note 7's case thats where the spen comes in handy.
anyways, im looking forward getting the note 7 in my hands and will be hoping theres a root method available in under 4 months lol.
I tested the note 5 for 14 days before I returned it. I threw on nova launcher and got the stock feel I was looking for I had android pay working which because of root never worked before. It was a solid device but I myself can't wait for next Thursday if it does come a day early.....

I would think that the S7 Edge is a good barometer as to how likely root is for the Note 7. I see that they recently found a semblance of root with the Verizon S7 E, although without an unlocked bootloader. Given how popular the N7 is certain to be, you can bet that there will be very serious efforts devoted to rooting it.

On the s7 edge. Is the user able to run twrp or any other custom recovery and Xposed framework. Im on note 3 rooted but locked bootloader. Hoping to get note 7 and being able to run twrp and xposed framework and other great things.
No unlocked bootloader or TWRP on the Verizon S7E yet, but they are working on it. Xposed apparently can be flashed through Flashfire. I know from experience with a Samsung tablet that Knox presents problems with bootloader unlocks. I am now on the Nexus 6P and new innovative ways are in place now to allow root and Xposed without touching the system, so as to preserve Android Pay. One of the problems with tripping Knox that I see on the VS7E discussions is that it breaks Samsung Pay, so hopefully, work arounds similar to the system-less root on the 6P will be developed.
As time goes on and I get newer phones I lose interest in root capabilities. Honestly there is very little on my Nexus 6 that requires root. Many developers have gone to the trouble to make most of the good apps work without root. I give no cares about custom firmware anymore. It's always an exercise in patience as something is always broken, or you have to maintain the kernel and custom recovery and OS all separately. Make sure not to update your kernel version XXX unless you are on baseband YYY...... it's really exhausting..... I have had cell phones since cell phones existed. My first computer ran 4.7Mhz..... I'm really tired of chasing the next new thing. I've owned every Note except the Note 2 and Note 5 and on those years I had a Galaxy S model. Honestly the stock Samsung experience is good. Also most of the really useful SPen features and other features get broken once you root and rom and custom kernel and recovery and all that.... so, root or not. Whatever.

Root maybe, bootloader doubtful.
Either way if we get a U firmware, like we got with the S7 edge, and adaway, I'll be pretty happy with the device.

You may get it and will lose Samsung Pay once rooted. Sure you want it? The only reason I want it is for non-provisioned tethering off my UDP but even then it'll be hard to sacrifice Samsung Pay. Guess that's why I keep my OG Droid Turbo around

[Unlocking Verizon Bootloader] Can I still do this??

I just got my Pixel XL and it's already updated to Android 7.1.1 so does this mean I cannot unlock the bootloader anymore? I read somewhere that once you have done the update you can no longer unlock the bootloader and it doesn't matter if I revert back to 7.1 or 7.0 once the updates done it's been patched.. I didn't read that here it was on another android website i was just browsing around and decided I'd come here and ask and see if I can get a definitive answer.

If you want to unlock your boot loader and your on 7.1.1 you might want to take back your VZ sourced Pixel and get one direct from Google. I'm not saying it can't be unlocked, I just don't think there is enough of an audience to make it worth a Developer's time.

Yes but you unlocked prior to 7.1.1 or bought directly from Google. If your phone comes from VZ with 7.1.1 you can't unlock it as far as I know.
It's cool I will just either wait for a new exploit to be found or something or just forever be stuck with a locked bootloader it's so dumb too ALLL i wanted to do was change the default system emojis but can't even do that w/o root.. it really makes me wonder why they lock all the customization behind root access or the developers @ Android are hella stupid.. should be able to make changes to icons, UI in general and anything else that doesn't directly affect the phone..
I understand Verizon doesn't want people modding their phones and possibly doing something malicious on or to their network or having to deal with someone calling about how their phone doesn't work correctly when they arn't even using the same version of Android as the phone is suppose to have or what ever other reasons they have for not wanting people to be able to flash their phones etc.. but you'd think being able to change default system emojis or something else super basic/simple like why?? why can't they just allow for total customization and it'd fix a lot of these problems of people wanting to root their devices..

So, I just got off the phone with Google and they are sending me RMA label so I can ship them my Verizon Pixel and they'll send me a Pixel directly from Google.. Unfortunately it'll be refurbished though.. But as long as it comes directly from Google it doesn't matter which Android version... I can still unlock right?
Yes, if you buy from Google the phone can be unlocked no matter what version of Android it comes with.

I bought it through Verizon to trade in my phone. I was under the impression that I could unlock the bootloader, provided my phone came with 7.1.0. However it took them like two and a half months to ship, so it came with 7.1.1
