Weird battery charging behaviour

Hi all,
My One X charges strangly I think. It charges really fast from about 80% give or take. It should charge slowly (given the nature of the battery). When it says the battery is charged, I unplug the device and within 15 minutes or so the battery is already at 90%. I have a feeling that the device somehow think the battery is fully charged while it is not really the case. Could this be resolved by doing a factory reset so that the battery stats will be removed? Or should I seek some other solution for it?
I'm currently on stock 1.28.xxx.x, the same problem occured at 1.26.xxx.x.

Same here. Tried the factory reset after the 1.28 OTA, but am still getting the same pattern.

Someone said battery was improved after about 3weeks use. So 7days! For me left!

The green charging light goes on at ~95%. When the phone charges all the way to 100%, it disconnects itself from the charger until it goes back down to say, 95% again. When it hits 95% it will then charge itself back up to 100%, and this cycle will repeat. That's why sometimes when you pull the phone off the charger it is down to 90% or 95% or whatever sometimes within a few minutes.

[Batt] Safe to Overcharge?

I'd like to check if its safe to leave my phone charging for 7+ hours. It will be nice to leave the phone charging as I sleep.
But without a timer this would easily mean 3+ extra hours of it being left charging when it's already fully charging.
Will overcharging on a daily basis lead to any problems?

Theses phones stop charging once they hit 100% it very safe did it with my desire for two years.

The phone stops charging at 100% and lets it drop to 95% before starting to charge again to combat overcharging.

So u people say that custom Roms can be safe when we over charge
By automatically stopping it or discharging a little bit.
I use a galaxy note.however replacing it with a htc one...
I won't mod them by installing custom Roms and all..
What if I do the same wit it now?(overcharging?)

Its the same for stock.

Its not possible to overcharge it. And the ROM you are running will have no effect on this behaviour.
Its all controlled by the charging circuits inside your phone.
They read the amount of millivolts that your battery is giving out.
These are not exact numbers (just an example)
Low battery - 800mv
You put it on charge
When your phone reaches 2000mv - full battery
it will stop accepting voltage in
While it is still plugged in your battery can fall to about 1940mv at which point it will start charging again until it reaches 2000again.

Ok cool, I see. Despite what you said above, I also have been doing this for a short period but when i get up in the morning, my htc one m8 are hot at the back. When i remove the charger the heat disperses. Can you tell me if this is normal? Also my phone are using 4.4.2 which is not the latest update.

Fully Charged Phone - Shouldn't it be 97%?

I noticed my GN charges until 100% or "fully charged" (battery widget that spells it out). Shouldn't it be 97% or 98% max when charging to prevent damaging and preserve longevity of the battery? Or is this some new thing with 4.04 that it'll tell you 100% when it's really 97%? I do notice it drops down to 99% really quickly.
I'm stock on 4.04 and I'm using the provided USB cable and charger plug.

I take it you came from a Nexus S before? I was surprised too but I believe it cuts off the charging to prevent overdose of electricity. No worries on it mate.

It will charge to 100% of what ever value you set or as default comes.. Like you can see on the screenshot

Not everyone uses that.
The way the battery works is it charges to full, then takes itself off the charger until it goes down to say 95% and then at that point it goes back on the charger until it's at 100% again, so on and so forth.

Using custom ROM?
Maybe you need to calibrate the battery after you flash new ROM

Wiping batstats does nothing.

so basically it is safe to just leave it plugged in all the time then, the phone by default is DEFINITELY stopping charge at 100%, Correct?
because i know 2 facts about lithium batteries which i learnt today....never leave it permanently charging. and never let it drain fully all the time (the 40-80% charge rule).
im just worried that if i leave it plugged in it'll continue charging even when its at 100...
Do you know if - with that different kernel/ROM - whether you can set it so that you can leave it plugged in - and it won't charge past say....96%. And when it reaches that limit, it lets the battery drain back to say 40%. Before charging again - any software that will let you do this?

Is how phone even on the charger that long..? Something like over night won't kill your battery. The software is supposed to tell the battery when to take itself off of the charger and when to go back. You can use a kernel that will let your battery ONLY charge to a certain percentage.

You do know todays chargers have technology in them to prevent this right? They have for a while, overcharging is mostly a thing of the past, unless you buy cheap, flea market chargers.

in Recovery Mode there is an option called "battery ststus calibration" (something like this which I cant remember) . actually any percentage of battery use can be "calibrated" into 100%, the number is not important.

I did come from a Nexus S, and I always thought that when it stopped charging at 97% that was a good thing to prevent damage to the battery. So naturally, when I see it's going to 100% every night, I imagine it's damaging my battery.

You cannot calibrate your battery. You can condition batteries. Wiping battery stats and so called calibrations apps do absolutely nothing.

I think "Battery Life Xtender" feature in some ROMs caters exactly to ur requirements. see this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1257497(just for example) and find some ROM in GN android development section

That's just because that's how the nexus s battery driver was written. The galaxy nexus driver isn't written with the 95% recharge limit. Its OK though there's no danger whatsoever leaving the phone charging overnight.

i mean, the feature is included in some of the GN roms

I keep getting multiple views when search the forum regarding CORRECT method for charging One for first few times and then after. Kindly suggest if you know for sure.

don't know which thread but i remember reading about not to drain it down to zero, suggesting to charge when down to around 5%. Hence the dilemma.

Give a hint if you find it again. I haven't read it before
I'm doing as written and have a quite good (in comparison to what you are reading here) battery statistic.

I don't know wether the advantages with new ROM/kernel take effect when it is off, so powered on.

You have a li-poly battery, and a lithium polymer battery doesn't need any particular charge method or charge cycle... However there's two things you can consider doing for your phone's battery.
1. Charging the phone for a full 5 hour period (even if it shows 100% charged, keep it plugged in to the end of 5 hours) and then wipe battery stat in cwm recovery if your phone doesn't detect remaining battery correctly.
2. Charging it from 50% remaining battery life is much better than letting it go all the way down to empty!
(I know lots of people told you to let the battery drains completely and then fully charge your battery, but trust me, i'm an electronic engineer, I know better, both draining the battery to 0% and charging it to full 100% are bad for your battery life, those were for ni-mh batteries not li-poly)

Exactly. No need to do full charges. Just plug it in whenever. If you are anal, then keep the charge cycling low. Eg keep the battery on a small band of charge state for example 50%-75%.

So, when the phone battery is down to 50%, we charge it.
And then when charged to a 100%, let it stay charged for an additional 5 hours, after that, or 5 hours TOTAL, from the time it is plugged in?

5 hours total, the point of this is to let your battery voltage go to it's maximum capacity (something around 4200mv, you can check the current voltage by dialing *#*#4636#*#* in your phone and going to battery information section)
And also note that full 5 hours charge cycle is just necessary when your phone doesn't detect your battery remaining percentage correctly... In normal situations just charging the phone from around 50% to almost 100% is an optimal charge method and you don't have to do the 5 hours charge...

The point you're trying to make is that for better battery life, it is important to re-charge when the battery falls to 50%, and not wait till it drops to 5-10%. Correct?
For Li-Po batteries, how low is it okay to let it go, before a re-charge?

Exactly...
It's better to charge your phone between 35% to 75% (optimal value is 50%) and not letting it go under 35% but after all as I said there is no need for an specific charging method and this precautions just give you something like 25% more battery life (and battery life is overall life of your phone's battery before you have to replace it, not the 100%~0% duration)

I think you'll fine but it will take longer time to charge as the Note charger has higher amp

Charging slower is fine, just don't want it to stuff up / shorten the battery life.
Just that I've being feeling that my battery seems shorter standby/use time now..
Maybe becoz started using google now?
Also is there any ways to maintain the battery life? Does discharging still work?

To my knowledge its best to charge these new batteries often... it was in the old days that it was best to let the batteries discharge completely, before recharging... I've heard that this might even harm the new generation of batteries...

Yes I came across the same info when I was using my HTC one x --> charge as often.
So same for our SGN2
= charge often, no need to discharge method.
Now can anyone confirming that google now drains power more than expected?
Somehow I was getting more than 1 day of life before but now with same usage my battery can bearly make it to the next morning?

If you want a fast charge, find yourself a Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire HD charger.

No that's just wrong!
Phone off, leave the battery atleat 50% charged.
Do not completely discharge the battery if you can charge before it's 0%
It was true for NIMH batteries, but it's a long time since we had those kinds of battery, and ofcourse NiCd batteries.

yep, what rvenes mention should be the go = no need to discharge (drain battery to 0 and full charge).
simply charge as often as possible, not letting it fall below 50%.

HTC charger should work fine.
You can charge with the computer too, usb, but it takes longer time.
