Fire Stick and VPN - Fire TV Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there any way to set up a VPN on the Fire Stick without root? Running 5.0.5 (with updates blocked), patiently (ok, not that patiently) waited for a recovery & rooted image for the Stick. I primarily use my Stick with Kodi, but I decided to hold off until I can get it behind a VPN (I use IPVanish with my other devices)? I know I can root with KingRoot, but if it's going to make Kodi crash after X amount of minutes, then what's the point?

Fire TV 2 (4k) Root with OS 5.2.1.0

Hey all! I am trying to root my FTV2 but so far without success. Current OS is 5.2.1.0 and I tried with KingRoot 5.05 (which, according to aftnews.com rooting guide should work), which always reboots at 36% and fails to root when I restart it.
Is there any reliable way to root this OS version on the Fire TV box?
Additional question: I have blocked the update servers in my router and subsequently, only the settings app is available on the Fire TV. Everything else is blocked with a network error. Any way around this without re-enabling updated?
Thanks!

AFTV 1 setup

Hello,
I dusted off my old AFTV1 and am trying to set it up again, but am running into some issues. When I install the ROM software, I continually get the message that it can't connect to the Amazon hosts, which I am assuming is due to blocking the OTA updates. However, without the Amazon app store, I am left with a pretty much blank AFTV. I am looking to just install Kodi and SlingTV on it. Are there any prefabbed ways to do this? As well as apps like netflix, hbo now, hulu. Would someone be able to tell me how to setup these apps? Would I just sideload them or are there other steps? What disadvantages would removing the OTA block provide? Does rooting provide me with any significant advantages over the stock versions? I noticed that to keep root, I have to remain on 5.0.5, is that correct??
Thanks so much for your help!
Kevin

Rooted Firetv stick 2 best OS for Kodi

I have a rooted FTVS2, what is the best way to turn it into a Kodi box? I have no need for any amazon features, just want to run a pure Kodi box.
It appears Open/Core Elec does not support it.
Can it be loaded with a lightweight Ubuntu and then kodi on top?
Or should I just de-bloat the fireOS (I found the guide) and run it like that?
TIA

Fire TV Cube 2nd gen won't update past 6.2.6.8

Just picked up FTV Cube yesterday. After many reboots and factory resets, I cant get past 6.2.6.8. I know the latest is 7.x. It tries but hangs at downloading system components. At one time I had 2 of every icon in settings. But a FR cleared that up. I try the update without customizing the cube or installing any apps. Only entered my Amazon acct info. I know back in the day you could ADB in and send over the update file but can we still do that and where are the latest update.bin for 7.x? Thanks
Had same problem with Fire Stick 4K, called Customer Support, and they told me to make my smartpfone a hotspot, connect my stick to it and retry. It didn't work for me, (still in 6.2.6.8) but it might work for U. I have read here and in other forums that it is common that same Fire devices would not get the same update, at least not at the same time. When you will get the 7.2.1.2 version, which is based on Android 9, NetFlix will get Atmos support. Hope Amazon will release 7.2.1.2 for Fire TV Stick 4K too...

[Fire TV Stick 4k] European HBO Go stopped to work

I use FTV4k in Poland. Using apk's I installed Amazon Prime Video (for whatever reason built-in APV doesn't work in Poland, but one from Android TV works fine); Netflix, Apple TV... and HBO Go (Nordic).
For the past year all worked extremely well and stable, but about 2 weeks ago HBO stopped to work. When I run it, it starts, there are a few revolutions of the circle, and then it jumps back to the main menu. I uninstalled the app, reinstalled, I was able to activate it just fine, and right after activation it dropped back to main menu.
I'm using newest version available, Google Play services are also installed in the newest version... I'm out of ideas what else could I try.
Anyone would care to help me?
I've the same problem
As I have noted in this post, the latest update for Fire Stick 4K causes the HBO GO app to crash. The only solution is to root and downgrade (or watch via the Kodi HBO GO addon).
Additionally, the same thing happened with Fire Stick 2nd Gen in the latest update.
HBO GO should issue a fix, but they're unlikely to do so because Fire Sticks aren't supported.
Hello
Could you give me hint How I need downgrade my FSTV4K?
I flashed pre-rooted 2.7.1 then during stick registering auto update install 2.7.3
I disabled OTA then again install 2.7.1.
After that install HBO and try. Not working despite downgrade, so this show that in system there some modified files left.
I suggest that I need backup of 2.7.1 with blocked OTA. Unfortnatly dont have it
I had the same issues. First I thought a full wipe of the system partition would be enough (and flashing the "stock" 2.7.1 via TWRP), but ultimately I had to do a factory reset on 2.7.1, block update servers on my router and skip the updates step in the setup wizard.
Apparently, to pass the update check, but prevent the download, you must block three of the four update servers:
Code:
amzdigital-a.akamaihd.net
amzdigitaldownloads.edgesuite.net
updates.amazon.com
If that doesn't get you past the update screen, you can use the Fire Stick remote Android app on a phone, connect to the stick as soon as it's visible on the local network, putting it to sleep via the app and waking it up via the remote. That did it for me.
There are other ways of passing the initial wizard, they involve modifying build.prop to enable ADB and pushing your adb keys, there was a post about it somewhere. To do this, you have to connect the stick directly (no OTG) and do the boot-fastboot.sh step from the rooting instructions.
Here's an old (apparently patched) version of the app intended for Sony Bravia TV's that works on both 2nd gen and 4K. The icon is purple for some reason and there's no shadow box behind the subtitles, but it works.
I see that the link has been posted in the request section, but I'll leave it here just in case.
