For those that don't have the native hotspot working. For example me since I'm using att note 5 on cricket wireless.
There is a mod in tmobile galaxy s6 forum that you can use to replace the native tetheringprovision.apk with a modded one that skips the provision check. And since now we have a Teathered Root, we can play with system files.
Here's the link to the mod:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tmobile-galaxy-s6/development/mod-enable-native-tether-t3078551
I tested it and it worked, but I only replaced the apk file, not the APN change.
I have the at&t Note 5 on cricket wireless and I can enable the wireless hotspot using the sidesync app. Connect your phone to your pc via USB cable, then on the pc sidesync app, enable mobile hotspot. No root or other modifications needed.

THANK YOU. I didn't know this. I have AT&T's new unlimited plan (eligible if you have DirecTV) and I've been waiting for a quick and easy root to enable hotspot. This worked flawlessly and keeps the phone charged since it's plugged into the laptop. You sir, made my day.

Ok, I have tested and verified. The phone does broadcast a wifi signal and other devices can connect to it, not just the pc it is connected to. As soon as the usb cable is disconnected the hotspot is automatically turned off.

did you do the second step of removing the arm64 folder? kind of doing my homework on this, because I am in that same boat of AT&T Note 5 on Cricket, and I would like unfettered access to my tethering, for my windows tablet/laptop ect.
And I'd really like to not brick this shiny new note 5 I just got. I'm rather fond of it.

Just got my Galaxy S3 today and upgraded from mytouch 4g, im on t-mobile's 4g prepaid plan with unlimted everything (5gig 4g data). on my mytouch i didnt need to pay for tethering service but now im trying to connect my itouch to my wifi hotspot on the s3 and it doesnt work.....would anyone happen to know a workaround or fix for this??
p.s. im not paying tmobile for tethering service
Thanks all
Its working for me. I thought the 5GB plan included the T-Mobile HotSpot app, the guy at the store this morning offered me a 2GB plan for $20 or a $35 5GB plan with tethering.
Thinking you probably need root.

You have to change your user agent on the PC side. I reccomend Firefox with the add on called "user agent switcher". No matter what don't use internet explorer, immediate giveaway.
Here's my current one as an example:
Mozilla/5.0 Linux U Android 4.0.4 en-us Galaxy Nexus Build/IMM76I CyanogenMod-9 AppleWebKit/534.30 KHTML, like Gecko Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/534.30
Here an example of what will get ur ass redirected to the tmo up sell page:
IE 7 ? Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.30)2011-10-16 20:20:09

It's included in my plan as well and I'm on AT&T. Not sure if it's a Premier thing though, but my data plan came with hotspot as part of it, and it's not the data sharing plan.
When I tried to enable it, it told me to call 611 to activate it.
+1 for foxfi on ATT.
AT&T will force you to give up unlimited data plans to enable this from them and it's another $15 USD / month. I believe the context of the OP is without carrier plan.
If you have no unlimited data and can stomach the $15/mo, more power to you.
Foxfi doesn't work for me but I found a way to get native tethering work on this phone but your phone has to be rooted to do that:
1. First you need to delete TetherProvision.apk system app. Either by root explorer or TB. Removing this might cause a FC when you try to turn Mobile Hotspot on in Settings (happened to me) but keep on reading.
2. Go to Google Play store and install Power Toggle and add the Wifi tether widget to your Homescreen.
3. Boom ^_^.
Excellent! Thank you for finding this.
Or flash 15 toggles from the Development thread. Mobile Hotpot built in + flash light and others

The app posted supports only ad-hoc connections according to the description.
I haven't seen any android versions that supported ad-hoc connections by default. You've always needed to replace wpa_supplicant to make ad-hoc networks visible to android wifi devices. Note that you can broadcast ad-hoc without changes. You just won't see ad-hoc networks without changes.

i really dont get it, what's the point of tether apps like PDAnet+ or Foxfi?
The default built-in tethering functions (wifi hotspot, usb tethering, OR bluetooth) work fine and free. am i missing something here..?
I am guessing they meant they are running the sharing app on another device (since they mentioned tmobile). So the tmo phone is sharing the tmo connection and nexus 7 is using that shared connection to access the net.

O really? is it because tmobile detects the built-in tethering and does not want to allow it? Because i'm with Rogers (canada) and i've been using the built-in bluetooth tethering (JB 4.2.2) of my cellphone data plan to my Wifi tablet (galaxy tab 2) for a long time now and it works all the time.

Have you tried this out then? Are you on a T-Mobile base? Was the flashable the one posted by evilart?
Sorry for the questions there, I've been curious about this myself
Yes I tried it out. I did a TWRP back up first, flashed the zip, went in and enabled bluetooth tether and tried it out using my tablet. I like to tether this way cause it uses allot less power on both devices. The only thing I don't know is if this change circumvents provisioning checks as I am paying for tethering anyway. I would love to see feedback from users that are not provisioned for tethering try it.
Forgot to mention, I am on stock Tmobile deodexed rom. Yes it was the one posted by evilart.
DO you have the file anymore, I have the T-mobile note 3 and would, and it would be great if you can email or post it somewhere I can download it.

I would have to look for it. Been using the international version of 4.4.2 for the note 3 and so it's not needed. It has native bluetooth tethering and works out of the box. I'll let you know if I come across it.
I have bluetooth tethering working with Tmo note3 on Jedi/saber and Gear on latest Null Rom. It does drain the battery....really fast. only really do it for short periods. otherwise, I use combination of wondershare and bluetooth file transfer for everything else.

After that, turn on your hotspot and go back to APN and click on the T-mobile Tether APN. Give it a few seconds and it'll automatically switch back to the T-mobile US LTE APN and you should have unlimited tether. You'll have to click on the Tether APN every time you want to tether. This method works for me.

Ding Ding Ding - winner winner chicken dinner -
THAT is exactly what the problem is and I cant understand why nobody on this website (and on these similar threads) have no clue about this, all suggesting 50 solutions, none of which work cause tmo already turned OFF their hotspot after 5g.
NONE of these suggestions are actual "hotspots", they just reroute, or mask the tethered data so it's not reported. These "fixes" do not fix the fact tmo turned off their hotspot after 5g tether.
Once ur new billing cycle starts, ALL these suggestions will work, but until then, NONE of them will work.
Fortunately for myself, I have an unlocked att N3, and I use the att hotspot (which of course does NOT talk to tmo), so I can tether to my hearts content without jumping thru all these stupid and frustrating hoops that the OP is going thru right now -
So OP, u can keep trying all this crap every month, or simply flash the ATT rom on ur N3, and then turn on the blue att hotspot, (instead of using the metered pink tmo hotspot). Then u will be truly unlimited with no tethering limits -
