Should I trade my G4 for a Galaxy S6? - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had an LG G4 for a few months now and, I have to admit I'm quiet sad of the bootloader situation (Canadian H812 here - So no unlock)
I've recently had my LG G4 stuck in a bootloop and sent it to be repaired to LG, and now I'm begining to feel as its not really the right phone for me. I've found an ad of someone willing to trade his S6 for an LG G4 and was wondering what you guys think? Is it worth it? My only concern is the battery life of the s6 which i heard was horrible but then again, battery life varies from person to person. Feedback please? Thank you!!!

Well If you can leave with no external battery, no expandable memory, and a not so good camera on S6, comparing with G4. then go for it.
What I like about S6 is the build quality..

Are u sure the s6 is unlockable? u will be trading a locked phone for another locked phone otherwise. Get the nexus if u value root and what comes with it. OEM is only going to be stricter with security from what I see

Tempted to upgrade to different phone?

I can't be the only one thinking about it with the lineup in 2015. The S6 Edge is sexy as hell but there isn't enough bang for the buck. HTC M9 is not even a contender this year (honestly HTC, you need to step it up). LG G4 sounds promising so far, although if LG somehow manages to screw something up in the specs/software, it's a long wait til the Note 5 and I'm not a huge fan of Touchwiz. I want to upgrade but my G3 is still pretty solid and I don't want to jump down below 5.5(ish) so I'm in limbo.
Anyone else thinking of upgrading? If so, which phone is tempting you?
No thinking about it, I will be getting the normal galaxy s6 next month. In my opinion you cant beat samsungs amoled screen and the exynos processor sounds amazing. Plus I like the idea of a fingerprint scanner over knock code now that it is touch not drag. I can live without removables, never needed to replace a battery and with 64 or more internal I wont need a sd. The G3 is a good phone but it already bores me, first phone I can say that about within the first year. I'll probably get some hate about this but my iphone 3g kept me happy longer. Sure that was my first smart phone back in 2008 but still... It was boring ios.

I agree on the G3 boring me part. My HTC DNA kept me interested longer than this phone did, for whatever reason. I was seriously considering jumping to the S6 or S6 Edge but I went to go check them out at Best Buy and neither of them amazed me. Sure their build quality is better than previous generations but nothing "wow"ed me and from what I hear, the battery life leaves much to be desired. Why Samsung went with 2500mAh, I have no idea. I can definitely live without removables too but not with a battery that small.
As much as i want to upgrade to the s6 edge i think i will hold off and see what LG has to offer. I like the G3 and have grown to like the buttons on the back of the phone as well as the knock to wake and sleep. Plus the g3 is the perfect size for me and the s6 is a tad smaller so ill wait for now.

The poor battery is from wake locks, the exynos processor Is 30% more efficient than the snapdragon 810 and the amoled screen takes much less power so after the wake lock issues are taken care of it should last just as long or longer than other flagships coming out.

The rumor mill is saying the g4 will be bigger. Personally the g3 is as big as I want to go with phones.
All in all we all have different tastes and the s6 is the flavor I'm digging right now. I guess we will see if I still think it looks tasty in a month.
Absolutely no Samsh_t for me whatsoever.
No root on Z3 stopped me from buying.
I may consider M9, but I'd like to see what G4 will be first.
Camera is a big thing for me and after having the Nexus 5, HTC M8, and a Samsung S5.... I am sticking with the G3 for a while longer. Lots of people talk about how great the Samsung S5 camera is, but I did a side by side comparison and everyone said the G3 pictures were the best. For the S6, I guess we'll see how that camera turns out. Plus, it's going to be hard to root.
Samsung is ****ing bloated all to hell and back. G4 looks like it could be much better than the s6.

I'm probably going to move to the M9. I switched from my M8 out of boredom, and honestly, I regret it.

You regret switching from the M8 to the G3? What do you like better on the M8?
And I agree with @dakpluto that the G4 sounds like it could be just as good, if not better, than the S6/S6E. Over-hyped phones in my opinion.

Honestly, my M8 was less laggy and just overall performed better. I know it's backwards, but in my experience, it was true. That and there's WAY more development for the HTC flagship phones on XDA than the G3.

I definitely agree on the development part. For whatever reason, LG G3 D851 had steady development but never exploded like my previous phones and seems to have dwindled now.
Thankful for what we got though!
Still loving my G3 on CM12.. Running great for me. As far as the S6 & M9 are concerned neither are worth the money (to me) to upgrade, and I even have an available upgrade. Ha. I bought my mint G3 non-contract with clean IMEI from a buddy for $275. He said it was too big of a device for him. I can't really justify an upgrade right now with the current offerings. S6 has Touchwiz (pardon me while I puke), antiquated home button & capacitive keys, no micro SD, and anemic battery. The M9 just didn't do it this year, and there's no word on a GPe version yet anyway. Safe to say I'll stick with my "Nexus 5.5" for now..

I'm actually grateful that it hasn't. Summer is coming and like many of you, I've spent more time then I care to remember flashing 3 different ROM's a day. I'm glad I don't have that issue anymore honestly.
I have the G2, and think I might upgrade to the G3. The G4 is the only other phone that has my interest also but won't be sold to probably late May. Plus, the G4 will be already on Lollipop and doesn't have an older KK bootloader to flash twrp on and might be stuck. Unless bump gets updated to work on the new Lollipop bootloader. What you guys think?

I would put down money saying the g4 will be bootloader unlocked on T-Mobile just like this g3.
It's no question for me. The G4 will be mine by pre-order. I have owned 1 Samsung phone and have had 5 Lg's including the G2 and 3 so it's only right to get the 4. Plus all of my other electronics are Lg so they sync up seamlessly.

The T-Mobile g3 on lollipop is bootloader locked? You sure?
---------- Post added at 04:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:53 PM ----------
OKay, okay Ill stop playing stupid. It has never and probably never will be locked on t-mobile. We have never needed bump. Sure without all the other variants development might start at a slow pace but it would happen.

Here's what I mean. The G3 on Lollipop can get root now. This allowed us to to modify the aboot with the previous kitkat version where we could bump the boot.img and recovery.img. This is only necessary if you want to flash custom roms, etc...
When the G4 comes out, it will come with Lollipop out of the box. It will probably be able to get rooted also with the latest exploit we have for root on Lollipop. But to get a custom twrp put on it to flash custom roms probably won't happen and will stay locked down on any carrier untill a new bump is developed that will work with the Lollipop aboot.img. The G4 doesn't have a previous version of Kitkat to do the hack that we do both on the G3 and G2 to make bump work.
My hunch is rom development on the G4 will not be possible until an exploit is found. Not sure we can put a G3 KK base aboot.img on a G4. Probably make it a brick.

G4 Switch from Samsung Questions

Hello all,
Currently have the S5, previous phone was S4 (RIP unlocked bootloaders) and thinking about making the switch to this new G4. This phone looks pretty sweet and was wondering how the UI and everything is from Samsung? I'm sure some people here have made the switch. Tired of how secure Samsung is now with Verizon. Not an HTC fan, so figured LG was the way to go.
How's the development for these phones? I've skimmed over the G3 forums and seems to be some ROMs, but nothing much.
Basically, if you're stuck on Verizon like me, is it a good move to switch to LG since they seem to eventually get unlocked or be stuck with Samsung and TouchJizz for a little more while?
Or is the M9 just too good to not get over my hatred of it and select that?
Just some options here from you guys to help sway my mind, thanks guy!

I ditched Sammy note 1 on 2013 (No...its just simply died on me one morning on a freezing temperature.) then got G2 then G3 and now have both G3 and G4. And never look back cos Life's Good. Why not much custom ROMs? Simple answer we dont really need them so much. We Stock ROM developers and some tweaks.
LG UX 4.0 is awesome. Try it yourself when its available.

Thanks for some of your input! Much appreciated. Samsung has been a headache the last year alone because of all their government contracts now. They heartily beefed up their security. Add Verizon on top of that, and yeah, you get my drift. I lucked out with my S4 having it bootloader unlocked and chances are Samsung will never have another one unlocked. HTC and LG seem to get cracked within a couple months, so I'd rather take a chance with that than switch to crap carriers like T-Mobile.

[Q] Does the G4 artificially sharpen the contents of the screen?

I was originally considering picking up a G3, but decided against doing so because of the many reports of artificial "over-sharpening" of the picture quality. Since G4s have come down in price, they are now on my radar as well, so my question for the community is simple - does the G4 suffer from the same artificial sharpening that the G3 does?

I'm talking about the screen; not the camera (although if the camera's pictures are degraded worse than comparable devices, it is important to consider also).

Mate don't listen to these guys, they don't know what they're talking about...
The G4 does *NOT* suffer from G3's sharpening problems (personal experience as well as many reviews, check Anandtech's which is the best review site) and new G4's almost don't suffer from bootloop problems.
The display is brilliant, the phone is great, good battery and nice custom ROM support. If you want a G4 definitely buy it, now that price is low it has terrific value for money
P.S.: the camera as well is simply superb, just check "G4 Picture Samples" thread here on XDA

Interesting. Do you know how the custom Rom and kernel support is with regard to the Verizon variant of the G4? I was just on the G3 forums and there is apparently a lot of hoops that have to be jumped through in order to get custom recovery on a Verizon G3. Is it any easier and better on the G4? Are there any noteworthy pitfalls?

I honestly don't know, but I suggest you buy an unlocked H815 international model since it's for sure the most supported.
The G4 has great value for money now. The camera is superb. The screen is amazing and no it doesn't over sharp anything. This was only on G3. Battery life is OK nothing super but definitely not terrible. Newer G4s do not suffer from the Bootloop. The phone only misses a fingerprint reader. If you want root and custom ROMs but the international H815 which you can unlock.

The H815 is a no-go for Verizon and Verizon MVNOs. It's gotta be the VS986. I'll check in on the Verizon-specific forums for details on that. Otherwise, I'd have to shell out the extra money for a Moto X Pure Edition, which is currently hovering at just below $200 on the used market; hopefully it and the G4 (whichever I decide to go with) drop off by the time upgrade season rolls around in the spring.

Newer G4's typically don't suffer from bootloops but they are still possible. Anyways LG does change it under warranty terms if you are so unlucky to get a bootloop on a new G4, even if you have a custom ROM.

LG sold millions of G4 phones, a tiny few of those had the bootloop issue, and LG fixed them. And the reason that you buy an LG G4 is because it was the best phone overall, a year ago, and still is the best phone you can buy today, when you consider removable battery & memory card, camera, screen, audio quality etc. at ANY PRICE.
Tiny few ??? Ahem ahem its a manufacturing fault its bound to happen in every phone atleast with s/n 5xxx ....the blue print of g4 is exactly the same atleast for the older versions...so u are a bit exaggerated about tiny few of g4s while the reported are in millions..they r better options from the g4 like the moto droid turbo buy the 64gb version best phone best price better than g4 it is also cheaper than g4 u can get ot around 180US$ used

There's no specific model that won't get bootloop. Except for maybe getting a different device like an LG G5 which is not much more cost depending on condition than a G4 in the US anyway.

No if it bootloops but when. You are better off with something else. If u dont get the rite model itll bootloop and no root or twrp. So a double down whammy. Plus there is very little support left for the g4. But there are still wonderful devs and memebers working very hard to keep her alive
My g4 died a week ago and she was 2 which is extremly old in g4 years lol.

lg is doing a decent job of warranty on them but i feel they should quit and start replacing them with similar speced devices as they seem to have not fixxed the issue
now some people will contridict me and say the newer ones dont bootloop its up to you againg some refurbs from lg claimed to bootloop too
again up to you if ure willing to take a chance on a decent device
I got mine something like year ago straight from LG Poland, as my G Flex 2 had many issuses so they replaced it with G4. Never had any problems with it, even through heavy usage and software moding. Altough LG Poland service seems very good and i don't care as long as i have a warranty (which is two years from the date of warranty exchange). Only thing i would change is the Snapdragon 808(bigger battery would be also nice), but otherwise this phone is superb and it's still seems better than newer LG phones, especially G5. Still best LG design to date and it's shame that this curved design with buttons on the back havn't survived.
Also, i'm writing this down with my G4

No more developing?

It kind of looks like everyone got rid of there G4? Or was it just not a very popular phone? I've been browsing through the topics a bit and there just doesn't seem to have been as much custom roms or kernels as with other phones in general..
Which is only convincing me more to get the new OnePlus..

It's not that we are getting rid of the G4 nor it is not popular, it is in fact a very good phone other than its terrible battery life. It's LG who makes us get rid of them. I had no intention to get an OnePlus 3T at all if it wasn't the infamous bootloop issue kicking in. Hope this answers your question.

They have horrible hardware. Its not if it will bootloop but when. My g4 of 2 years died the other day. Lol i got me a g5. No root no unlock no roms. Just the way i like it. Yea rite. This phone really wasnt popular cause of the horribly locked bootloaders. And hardware issues combined. Ure best bet would be to ditch it asap and get somthin else
It's a shame that LG seemingly supports few models like single SIM international version like the LG H815! For the long 2 years, dual sim didn't even get bootloader unlock! I should have got the LG H815 instead of the H818P. Now I'm aware that LG G6 single sim international version (LG H870) already having root, custom ROM as well as TWRP support! That'll be my next device.
