Is there any way to have USB otg and phone charging at the same time (with an Y cable) ? Maybe with a custom kernel?

From my un derstanding the flow can only travel one way on otg. Out u can charge or power what evers hooked to it. But from what ive read the device has to have dial charging circuts.
And please from now on post question in q and a section
Would wireless charging work with USB otg device connected?

no it doesn't.... As soon as I plug the otg device, the wireless charge stop.
to support it we need a custom kernel. Nexus 7 has this custom kernel...

the power supply power both the phone and the otg device.
I sure hope a developer works on this feature!

A little late reply, but I have good news for you - G4 (at least LGH815) has OTG with charging out of the box.
The problem is, that G4 in OTG mode gets less than 500 mA, so it will slowly charge, but only with everything off (screen included) - so what we need is a kernel mod to enable full power charging (1800 mA) while in OTG mode.
Good news, everyone!
Apparently, G4 detects charger type only on initial attach - we can use this little exploit. We need some plug and cable tweaking, or, as in my case - a simple electronic circuit to do the trick.
We need OTG cable (ID pin grounded) with external +5 V on VBUS (red), D+ and D- (green and white) shorted, and OTG device already connected. Next we attach cable to phone. G4 detects short on data pins, as in typical wall charger, so it sets itself into AC charging mode (up to 1,8 A). Now we need to disconnect D+ and D- to allow normal data flow between OTG device and the phone. As soon as data pins are unshorted G4 detects OTG device properly, while still CHARGING IN AC MODE!
Tested on my LGH815 running stock LG Marshmallow.

No, I have not tried it, but they say in this thread that it is not only about power but having a resistor as well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1149442
especially post #10
Tested. Nope, this does not work.
I assume the resister is needed to tell the Tab to send power to the USB.
The resistor is needed to cause the Tab to enter host mode. No resistor - you've got device-to-device and that doesn't work.
Would it be possible to splice the resistors into the female-female usb cable? 2 resistors and a cable is a really cheap way to go.

No, the resistors go between two dock pins that are not connected to the stock USB cable...
old thread, but i am in the need of the same.
would it theoretically possible to have a charging cable with a usb host part spliced in? i need to be able to connect a usb hid device AND keep charging the tablet. Would the current going into the tablet be mucking things up for the usb host operation?

It shouldn't since the charging +5V input is on separate pins from the +5 USB host power. But the Tab looks at the USB D+/- pins to figure out if it should do slow or high current charging. If it sees voltages that make it look like a host is on the other end of the pins, then it does 500mA max charging, and if the pins are floating it charges at max 2A. I don't know if host mode would screw that up. You could look at the kernel source, or just try it and see.
I had recently purchased the C6502. At work I do not have AC power outlet to charge the phone. So I generally used to charge my old smartphone (LG Optimus 4X HD) with a blackberry USB cable. I used to charge my old phone by connecting to the monitor's USB port using the blackberry cable. Though the phone showed as "Slow charging", it served the purpose.
But now using the same Blackberry USB cable and the same USB port, if i try to charge the C6502, it just lights up the screen and does not show any charging indication or the notification LED light.
Am I missing something here or the phone charges only with the original Sony provided USB cable?
Note: The same USB cable and the USB port work perfectly fine for other smart phones my colleagues are having like Galaxy grand, Lumia 610, HTC Desire SV etc. Of course when connected to the usb port all these phones are showing as slow charging, but they do charge slowly. But my XZL does not even charge. So I am definitely sure the cable and the port are perfectly fine.
Is there a way I can charge my XZL with the USB cable using the USB port?

Let me explain it more clearly.
At my work the USB ports on the CPU are disabled. But the monitors are having USB ports which can be connected to the CPU through another cable, so that USB devices can be connected to the monitor's USB ports insteading of leaning till the CPU under the desk. But those ports are not connected to the CPU so the ports on the monitor just act as a power source but not as data source. So we use the monitor's usb ports for charging our devices like phones, ipods etc.
As i had already told that my XZL screen lights up when connected to the port using the blackberry cable, but no indication of charging as well as no LED light. Same case with another colleague's Xperia SP.

So sony does not support "chaging only" mode using USB cable. How pathetic !!!. Supposed to be a "Smart phone" but really do not understand why cut down basic features.
Can anybody confirm if this cut down of a basic feature is a standard for Sony phones?

USB charging
I have observed two things -
1) Yes, it does not charge in some cases. I have a power bank cable, with this cable it charges for some time but then it just stops charging without any reason. If you reinsert the plug, it starts charging again.
Other times, it does not charge with USB ports, for example my car music player's USB port. But what I have noticed is, if USB connectivity mode is changed from MTP to MSC or vice-versa it works.
Also some cables do not have two spring notches, and fit quite loose. In such cases pushing cable vertically up or down gets it charging again. But this is very very rare case.
2) I was not able to charge it from front USB port of my PC, but when connected to back USB port, it was charging fine.
My conclusion is, it does not charge if charging rate is too low or mode is incorrect.
I would suggest, try with original Sony USB cable in your office and check if it works. If still it does not, change connectivity mode. Else its a cable issue(not exactly, but phone and cable have some mismatch).
PS - I had similar problem with my chinese tablet. Out of more than 5 cables, It charges with only one cable from Nokia(it does not even charge with original tab USB cable ). I think there are separate data pins and power pins. But data pins can double as power pins. I think there was some damage to the tab USB pins, because of which data pin no more works as power pin and hence it does not charge and requires cable having power pins. Can somebody throw more light on this?
Relax its just u need a pc on to charge it it happens in my case too n my phone works fy9 with any cable

Make sure you have a 'charge only' lead to the charger (Shows as 'AC connected' not 'USB Connected') or you'll find you won't have enough power to do everything.

Yes, i tried but i cant charge. I tried with other phone and works but dont have otg support.
The problem with OTG and simultanous charging is that you'll probably need a custom kernel supporting this.
Because if you use OTG (or a data cable respectively), the phone will only charge with 500 mA max. - this might not be enough to charge your phone while using power-consuming apps (navigation, games,...). If you want the phone to charge faster/draw more current, you'll need to short-circuit the data leads - but then you can't use OTG/data. Tricky...

I think that is not the reason because if i try to charge only didn't work, i think the charging cable is not compatible with moto g like some chargers specific for some patents.
If someone knows a cable like that to charge and use usb stick or something compatible with moto g I would appreciate.
The cable is probably working, but the kernel is not supporting it. If you use a USB y-cable, it will power a plugged-in USB stick / device, but not your Moto G. You will need a kernel or tomorrow supporting simultaneous data & charging. Have a look in the Nexus 7 sections, there you'll find more information about this.

Do i need a custom Kernel to get that capability?? I have a OTG cable that works for connecting a mouse, keyboard, thumbdrive etc and it has a port for power but the tablet does not recharge.
So i'm wondering if i need a custom Kernel or maybe the cable is defective or something.
If you know of one of those cables that work, please let me know.
Thanks in advance.

Slimport adapter outputs HDMI signal and lets you charge the tablet simultaneously, but besides that... nothing else on stock ROM I imagine.

Difference between normal and OTG USB cable is that OTG has pins 4 (sense) and 5 (ground) shorted and on regular cable pin 4 is not in use. If you put a switch between these two pins you can switch between regular USB cable for charging and OTG for connected devices.
Some apps can be found on Google Play Store that claim to be able to switch between or enable simultaneous OTG and charging, but most are for specific devices or group of devices, none for G Pad 8.3. Most promising is maybe Faux123 Kernel Enhancement Pro (3.77€ and requires Root+Busybox+SuperSU).
Too bad our tablet has no secondary charging port (like Sony has magnetic charging port for example), but least intrusive would be to use powered USB HUB, let it power the connected devices so the battery drain on the tablet will stay low.

Thanks for that - Very good info! Allow me to pick your brain a little more: Looking at the cable i have (in the OP), do you think that by just connecting an external power (red and black) to the cable just before going into the tab would work somehow to give it power.
It's intreging what you said about being able to switch from regular USB (that can supply power) to OTG just by jumping those wires. I'm trying to picture something in my mind to accomplish what we want but the "light bulb" haven't came on yet - any suggestions?
I want to use the tab in the car PERMANENTLY so i need a way to charge it while behind the dash. I would want to use a mouse as well so OTG is a must.
In any case, i'm going outside right know to split open that cable and see how it's connected inside, maybe then the light bulb will come on in my head.

Try it out, you got the cables!
When pins 4 & 5 get shorted the tablet may be configured only to output power, not receive it. I have only OTG adapter cable and the supplied USB charging/data cable, so I cannot test this stuff.

I would buy micro USB male plug, some heat-shrink tubing with glue, switch (3A) and split OTG adapter or HUB. Cut off the male plug fom the adapter, solder on the new plug to the adapter cable as normal USB, solder on the switch to pins 4 & 5 of the plug, check it for continuity and shorts, test it on the tablet, if good - secure the new plug to the cable with heat-shrink tubing.
EDIT: Possible solution with resistor described here
Our device, if it can be tricked this way, may require different resistor from the one used in the tutorial (usually in 36KΩ-200KΩ range).
Ok, I'm chopping it up! I spliced-in the red and black wires from a USB cable into the OTG cable (in the OP) and sure enough the tab gets power. However, it no longer detect the mouse or any thing else (kind of expected). Tomorrow i will try bridging pin 4 and 5 and see what happens. If that don't work, i will try the resistor. :fingers-crossed:
I have read that devices on OTG get polled regularly, but charging is not, i.e. if you start charging and after that short the pins 4 & 5, it will continue charging and you can use your OTG devices. Hope this holds true to the G Pad as well.
Isn't micro USB a "standard"....??
Then GEEZZ why do one manufacturer thinks it's ok to eliminate a pin completely! i assume that when i pay for that cable, i will get ALL 5 PINS even if one is not connected - rip-off! This manufacturer not only didn't connect pin 4, it was eliminated completely; stopped me in my tracks! Fortunately, i have an extension that have of all things ALL 5 WIRES CONNECTED! Imagine that! But now, i don't have any time to chop-it-up until tomorrow. With the 5 wire cable, i will short the yellow and black wires but I'll check here first to see if I'm warned against it.
More to come..

Nothing good to report. Connecting the power wire to the OTG cable and shorting the 4&5 pins does nothing different. I can have it charging and when i disconnect power, it then detects the mouse (that's a good thing) but when i plug the power back in, nothing happens! Ideally it would disconnect the mouse and start charging again but no-go. Having the 4&5 pins shorted or not makes no difference.
Still have a couple things i will try before i give up, one is the resistor and the other is a more simple OTG cable.
Will report back.

I understand that you would want the cables all hidden behind the dash in a car and can't be connecting and disconnecting plugs all the time, at the most just flip of a switch should make things work. The resistor trick would be ideal, if it works.
What's the exact sequence you did things in?
- Mouse and charger connected to the tablet simultaneously with pins 4 & 5 not shorted, tablet charging - short pins 4 & 5 - what happens?
- Only charger connected, pins not shorted, short pins and then connect mouse...
- Mouse and charger connected to the tablet simultaneously with pins shorted, mouse working - unshort pins...
- Only mouse connected, pins shorted, unshort pins and then connect charger...

I would have to record in what sequence i do things to remember but it seem i have done every combination possible. I do remember doing these sequences after a fresh reboot of the tablet and BTW i made a simple cable out of a know working (single) OTG cable and splicing-in the red and black from the cable that has 5 wires connected, leaving the pin 4 wire disconnected and extending a pigtail from the black wire so i could short the yellow and black to hopefully force OTG:
- Power plugged in and mouse plugged-in then plug the cable into the tablet - it detects the mouse but does not charge.
- in the above state, shorted the yellow and black wire - no change.
- separated 4/5 then disconnected the mouse leaving power connected (expecting that the tab will then switch to charge but) - nothing. The mouse did disapear but the tab did not start to charge.
- shorted 4/5 (for ****s and grins) and as expected - nothing.
Again with a fresh tablet:
- with (ONLY) power connected to the cable, inserted the cable into the tablet - it started charging.
- in that same state, connected mouse - mouse was NOT detected but the tab continued to charge.
- with mouse plugged in, shorted 4/5 - no change (charging but no mouse detected)
THIS IS THE IDEAL SITUATION BUT JUST HALF WAY:
Rebooting the tablet with both power and mouse connected and cable inserted, the tab starts by accepting the charge (no mouse) but get this, plugging-out power makes the tab switch to the mouse right away! That would be good except that plugging the power back in does NOT make the tablet switch back to power, in fact, nothing happens, the mouse just continues to be detected.
If i had 2 cables, one only for power and the other only for OTG, i could pull one out and replace it with the other and both functions would work; i don't understand why that same "switching" can be recreated within one cable??
This is beyond me, the last thing i will try is following your sequences to the letter and with the resistor, if that doesn't work - i give up! :crying:

From what i understand otg goes one way or the other it cant act as a host and carge at the same time. It flips the charging circut to flow out instead of in. Ive been through this on a few phones tried even straight wiring a powerline to the otg itll power the usb device but not charge the phone.

The manufacturer of that cable clearly states that it'll charge a samsung phone, not confirmed working on a G4 though. Here is the link, http://shop.valarm.net/products/micro-usb-host-otg-y-cable-with-micro-usb-power-for-samsung
I wish there was a way to enable charging using OTG.

Yea me to i have a few devices that hook to my car that drain my tablet and phone batts and it kills me the only other way ive got it to work is hard wire a charger to the phone. But of coarse this is a old throw away gs3 that im talkin bout not my g4. I havnt tried on my g4 yet but its all phone specs has to have dual charging circuts cause they can only flow one at a time. Now some new devices i know. Do support otg with charging capabilities.
