[Q] USB Host functionality with stock charger cable + USB female/female adapter - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Accessories

Maybe a noob question, but would that work?
Primarily a usb stick that I would use that way

No, I have not tried it, but they say in this thread that it is not only about power but having a resistor as well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1149442
especially post #10

Tested. Nope, this does not work.
I assume the resister is needed to tell the Tab to send power to the USB.

The resistor is needed to cause the Tab to enter host mode. No resistor - you've got device-to-device and that doesn't work.

Would it be possible to splice the resistors into the female-female usb cable? 2 resistors and a cable is a really cheap way to go.

No, the resistors go between two dock pins that are not connected to the stock USB cable...

old thread, but i am in the need of the same.
would it theoretically possible to have a charging cable with a usb host part spliced in? i need to be able to connect a usb hid device AND keep charging the tablet. Would the current going into the tablet be mucking things up for the usb host operation?

It shouldn't since the charging +5V input is on separate pins from the +5 USB host power. But the Tab looks at the USB D+/- pins to figure out if it should do slow or high current charging. If it sees voltages that make it look like a host is on the other end of the pins, then it does 500mA max charging, and if the pins are floating it charges at max 2A. I don't know if host mode would screw that up. You could look at the kernel source, or just try it and see.

yeah, it would be possible to attach any USB device (like on your pc) to the Phone (USB Flash Drive, Keyboard, Mouse, ......... )
cables
I could only find cables in china has anyone seen any for sale in the uk ?
you can make the micro USB to USB 'A' cable with a few bits and a soldering iron or some electrical tape. They seem to be scarce over here so thats what i plan on doing.
i have a "female - female" USB Cable here. if i plug this in my normal micro USB-Cable will this work?
Desire -> Micro-USB-Cable -> Female - Female-USB-Cable -> USB-Keyboard
I ordered from the ebay guy he adivised on his site
@kingchris
Nah this wont work. The reason he uses the powered hub and the special power cable is because the phone itself doesnt give out 5v like a normal USB port so devices are having to steal it from elsewhere.
So with your keyboard setup, the data lines will be connected but it will have no power.
so a normal Micro-USB cable to a USB-HUB and then to the keyboard?

Dont know if you even need the hub. Its the special dual ended power cable you need. Just need some way to pump 5v down towards the keyboard. *i think*

Here a link to a company selling the power cable. Based in Surrey.
i think it will work if you don't plugin as much devices as the guy in the video.
you can use one of these to convert your existing Charging Cable to a Female Port

DIY USB OTG CONVERTER FOR i9100! IT WORKS!

The most Micro USB to USB converters are not work if you want to use it for OTG converter, because the 4. pin of the micro usb plug is not connected!
The most ebay and computer shop's converters like this!
If you want to use it for working OTG adapter you have to connect the micro usb connector 4. pin to GND (5. pin).
Like this:
I made this mod on my adapter and it works!
First you have to open up the outter cover and carve the plastic around the micro usb pins. You can use multimeter to check the pinout.
After that solder the 4. pin to 5. pin with a piece of wire.
And finally glue back the outter cover.
Video:
So if you have not working adapter you can mod it, if you have suffice experience with electronic and proper tools.
Only do with your own risk!
I have this Usb converter!
With your mod works perfectly!!
just tried it it works perf, thank you!

OTG Cable USB (B) to Micro USB (A) Powered with AAA batteries ?
As one knows, Samsung has promised a MHL Cable
You noticed it is not only a cable but a box out of which you may plug in an extra power supply.
The obvious reason is if the passive monitor does not furnish 5V, the phone will rapidly be out of power.
Now you know that to obtain video rather than anything less, Pin 4 (sense) and 5 (Ground) of micro USB (male A) must be connected with a 365K resistance.
I suppose the dock Samsung is selling for I9100 (yes, I have it) is grounded at 1000K as it provides audio with remote, and yes, the dock provides power supply via extra micro USB as well.
I come to my point: If I want to access any USB data On the Go, I need a cable OTG with 2 ports: USB 2.0/3.0 (female, B sided) to a micro USB (male, A sided, grounded but with no resistance = 0K). Many of them exist on the market out there.
But it is quite impossible to use because of lack of power supply in the passive device (let’s say a handy 1T HDD usually powered via Host connexion !
Would it be possible to insert some sort of receptacle for AAA battery in the middle of such a cable to provide for power while you are for a long time out of access to an electric plug ? Does such a cable exist somewhere to buy ? What would be the sheme to mount this ? HELP !
Is it possible to add USB charging cable to USB-host cable? I want to use mouse\keyboard\flash and charge device in the same time.
I also interested how to add power to USB-host cable for devices "High-power device connected".
OTG and Power
thats excactly my question:
is it possible to use otg cable with a trackball or mouse and at same time charge the S2?
give power to usb mouse and charge S2 over a charger!?
Is it possible to use a game controller over usb otg? Would be pretty nice.
Wanna have a S2Play ;-)

Is there any driver/apps do I need to install first before using OTG?? or, is there two kind of sgs2, the one which support OTG and the other one not??
please someone help me...One point I choose this SGS2 is the OTG feature..

USB Cardreader Hub

I just ran across this USB Card Reader/Hub for the Samsung Tab. The device has three USB ports and a card reader. It even has a plug for a 5V power supply.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SAMSUNG-GAL...=Laptop_Adapters_Chargers&hash=item2316d2ac0e
Has anyone tried this thing? Does it perform as advertised? If it does, it may be the perfect accessory, especially when teamed with a power supply. On that subject, I wonder where one might find a compatible power supply that would provide the right amperage so it would work with the Tab.
Bob
^I would like to know also. If it works like it says, that would be the best thing ever!
I asked the company posting the device on eBay if they offered a power supply that would supply 2 amps. They said no.
Here is a question for some of the smart guys on this forum. Could the Tab be powered by a male to male USB cable plugged into the standard Samsung 110 V power plug and then in to the hub? The next question is if everything could be powered using a USB car adaptor that puts out 2 A.
Bob
Bump! Does anyone have experience with this device. If so, please post. Also, if anyone can answer the questions about the the power supply or USB charging from a car outlet, that information would be greatly appreciated.
Bob
I think you are misunderstanding the use of the power supply. I'm pretty sure the power supply doesn't charge the tab. It only powers the USB appliances (mainly for HDDs). An active USB-hub if you wish.

Achim

Well, that depends on the hub. How it is designed. It may block current from flowing into the USB ports.
I have to check mine when I get home...
Mind you, USB current is limited to 0.5A and that isn't enough to charge the Tab and use it at the same time.
But, let me see if I understand what you're trying to do: Connect the 110V adapter to one of the USB ports. Power/charge the Tab through a second port.
As to your earlier question, about a vehicle equipped USB port... Same answer. It depends on how the hub is designed. Since I have Sync in my Ford I have a USB port and I can check that as well. I know the Tab works connected to it... just not a USB hub.
how's the test
so... any result from your test? can it charge the tab?

YOU NEED AN ACTUAL OTG CABLE, NOT JUST AN ADAPTER.
Yes all caps, this has been stated time and time again, some people have had luck with the i9100 cables , some have not, you need a cable that works with either the t989 or Hercules, but, I have tested one that was made for the Xoom and it worked as well ...
Well I bought it online and I'm assuming it was made for OTG because what else could you possibly use one for? idk maybe there's another use for it but I can't think of one.
I read something online about shorting the 4 pin to 5 or something, could that work?
And I've tried connecting 3 different flash drives

Yes that could work, that is usually what a OTG cable does, but depends on the phone, the regular adapters are used, to use an Mini USB cable/charger on a Micro port , I use them all the time, because I have dozens of older chargers ....
Ok so I ripped open the adapter and the build quality was too good so I had to just rip the heads off lol so now I have a micro usb end with no wires connected and a female usb with no wires on it. Can I take 5 thin wires and connect the appropriate pins on the micro usb end to the corresponding pins on the female one?
If anyone has a guide to do this, it'd be appreciated

ok thank you. I was curious because i heard that if you use wrong cable it might damage phone because of difference in current flows. If we used type c to USB adopter and charge it visa usb cable then i assume it will charge it with normal speed? or still rapid charge?

That cable has the proper resistor configuration to indicate legacy source device so it should be fine (just look for 56k resistor)
Anytime you have a conversion from USB A to C the cable is supposed to be configured in such a way to tell the device being charged to fall back to USB charging rates (.5A to 1.5A). If that 56K resistor was substituted with a different resistor like in earlier designs, the device being charged might think the source device can handle more and will pull more current than available. This could damage your USB port in your example. However since the proper resistor is in place, the 5x will limit the current draw to what USB A can do and your USB A port should be ok.

Nexus 5x is USB 2.0 type C. There is a difference between cable interface and cable speed. Cable speed is designed as 1.0, 2.0 3.0 etc. Cable interface is designed by letters - A, B, C. Type A refers to the standard USB outlet found on a computer, while type C refers to the connector that plugs into the Nexus 5X. You can have a type c cable at either 2.0 or 3.0 speeds.

Not sure why they don't show up for you.
Maybe you need to enable developer options and USB debugging. I've had those enabled from the beginning so I wouldn't know if they have any affect on USB options.
This is what you should be seeing, the USB notification, then the USB notification options once you tap on the notification.
