Charging with USB Cable - Sony Xperia ZL

I had recently purchased the C6502. At work I do not have AC power outlet to charge the phone. So I generally used to charge my old smartphone (LG Optimus 4X HD) with a blackberry USB cable. I used to charge my old phone by connecting to the monitor's USB port using the blackberry cable. Though the phone showed as "Slow charging", it served the purpose.
But now using the same Blackberry USB cable and the same USB port, if i try to charge the C6502, it just lights up the screen and does not show any charging indication or the notification LED light.
Am I missing something here or the phone charges only with the original Sony provided USB cable?
Note: The same USB cable and the USB port work perfectly fine for other smart phones my colleagues are having like Galaxy grand, Lumia 610, HTC Desire SV etc. Of course when connected to the usb port all these phones are showing as slow charging, but they do charge slowly. But my XZL does not even charge. So I am definitely sure the cable and the port are perfectly fine.
Is there a way I can charge my XZL with the USB cable using the USB port?

Does your phone get charged on the provided charger?does the battery icon indicate charging bcoz this phone is vry vry slw when charging frm pc

Let me explain it more clearly.
At my work the USB ports on the CPU are disabled. But the monitors are having USB ports which can be connected to the CPU through another cable, so that USB devices can be connected to the monitor's USB ports insteading of leaning till the CPU under the desk. But those ports are not connected to the CPU so the ports on the monitor just act as a power source but not as data source. So we use the monitor's usb ports for charging our devices like phones, ipods etc.
As i had already told that my XZL screen lights up when connected to the port using the blackberry cable, but no indication of charging as well as no LED light. Same case with another colleague's Xperia SP.

So sony does not support "chaging only" mode using USB cable. How pathetic !!!. Supposed to be a "Smart phone" but really do not understand why cut down basic features.
Can anybody confirm if this cut down of a basic feature is a standard for Sony phones?

No buddy usb charging works when pc is on!i checked it doesnt charge when main supply is on bt cpu is off but it charges when cpu is on

USB charging
I have observed two things -
1) Yes, it does not charge in some cases. I have a power bank cable, with this cable it charges for some time but then it just stops charging without any reason. If you reinsert the plug, it starts charging again.
Other times, it does not charge with USB ports, for example my car music player's USB port. But what I have noticed is, if USB connectivity mode is changed from MTP to MSC or vice-versa it works.
Also some cables do not have two spring notches, and fit quite loose. In such cases pushing cable vertically up or down gets it charging again. But this is very very rare case.
2) I was not able to charge it from front USB port of my PC, but when connected to back USB port, it was charging fine.
My conclusion is, it does not charge if charging rate is too low or mode is incorrect.
I would suggest, try with original Sony USB cable in your office and check if it works. If still it does not, change connectivity mode. Else its a cable issue(not exactly, but phone and cable have some mismatch).
PS - I had similar problem with my chinese tablet. Out of more than 5 cables, It charges with only one cable from Nokia(it does not even charge with original tab USB cable ). I think there are separate data pins and power pins. But data pins can double as power pins. I think there was some damage to the tab USB pins, because of which data pin no more works as power pin and hence it does not charge and requires cable having power pins. Can somebody throw more light on this?

Relax its just u need a pc on to charge it it happens in my case too n my phone works fy9 with any cable

[Q] USB Charger

Hi,
I've used a USB charger on all my phones for a few years now. Just plug phone in on my desk and no worries. However my new Defy doesn't seem to take a charge from the USB on my network device (it's not a full PC). However my HTC HD2 could get a charge from it so:
1. Is the Defy more power hungry that it won't charge from an ND (I assume NDs put out less power over USB than a PC)
2. Does it just not show on the battery on the Defy that it's charging?
3. Have I missed something simple? I've gone into USB connection and selected charge only. I can't install drivers on the ND though, could that be it? The ND hasn't said it's found new hardware either though.
Thanks in advance for advice
motorola has a notorious reputation on this, they require a usb driver to be installed for charging some of their phones...
i think there's some strange combinations at work about this but, just use a standalone charger and it should solve the problem.
Thanks. I thought it would be that.
Bit short of plug sockets at work but I'll figure something out
Another point to note is that the Defy is very fussy regarding USB cables. A lot of cheap ones will pass data but no charge.

Would you consider hacking a usb cable to make a charging lead? A standard usb lead plugged into a PC will try to enumerate with the PC before it starts to draw power from the PC. However if you hacked a usb cable and shorted the DM and DP lines on the phone side, the phone 'should' detect the cable as a mains charger rather than a PC, thus enabling charge without any drivers on the PC. It would be something like the attachment...
Thanks for all the replies. Although my USB cable wasn't cheap and was capable of charging an HD2 which must be more power hungry than a Defy, it turns out the Defy is really fussy. It's charging fine through the Motorola USB lead on my network device.
My USB loading experience
Hi,
just to share my exp:
- loading with most USB loaders: fine
- My Car loaders and my multi power adaptor with usb can load everything but the defy
- on Computer no problem (some say you will have better battery performance when loading on non Computer: I can´t see a difference)
- cable doesn´t change anything

I've bought a couple of USB cables from ebay. My Defy seems to connect and disconnect when using them, like it has a loose connection. If I use the Motorola one, of course it's fine!

[Q] USB Charging

Hi, why cant i charge my play trough the usb cable?
I don't know, why don't you ask someone from tech support?
You can.

Some more details would be nice.
Does your phone just won't charge, while connected to your pc via USB,
or do you also can't get any access through USB to your phone?!

It depends where the USB is connected to. Not all computers (and other appliances) support charging external devices through USB.
as the above poster said not all computers support charging but also some cables have diferent connectors so some may only support data transfer and nothing more
This is the orriginal cable that i got with the play, it does transfer data, the red light which shows that its charging is off, the battery icon shows that its charging, while actually its not charging at all.
my USB does support charging because my Ipod can be charged from it.
Ok well you have two options you can try a difrent charger and see if its just the cable or call sony

Charging from Laptop USB Port

Morning all,
When I am in the office I have my OGP connected to my laptop's USB port using the USB cable that came with my OGP. Each time my OGP tells me I am slow charging, which I interpret as I am not pulling enough power. Recently I bought a Energizer Energi to Go kit, which has its own USB cable and different tips for charging different type devices. When I use the combination of the micro-USB tip and their USB cable I do not get the same slow charging message from my OGP. I interpret this to mean that I am pulling 2.1 mAh to charge the device quickly.
My question is why wouldnt the USB cable that came with my OGP support this also? Does the cable really determine how much juice I can pull to charge a device?
Thanks,
Steve
USB 2.0 provides 500mah. USB 3.0 provides up to 900mah. They cannot give more than that because they have to comply to the set standards.

HTC One Extended Charger USB Wire - Unable to charge

Hi Guys
I bought a 3m USB cable wire for the HTC One so I can lie down in bed and use my phone with a longer cable while charging the phone. I noticed it kept saying Unable to charge while in host mode. Why is this? When I plugin the normal original USB wire in to charge the phone it works perfectly. Is the 3m wire not sufficient enough for the HTC One?
Thanks in advance
J4v3d
Hmm, are you plugging it into a wall adapter or a computer's usb port? The host mode thing should only kick in when it tries to act as a host for a usb device such as a flash drive or external hard drive. Assuming that you're using a wall adapter, I would say it would be a defective usb cord as it keeps making the phone enter host mode. Just a sidenote, the phone is unable to charge whenever it is host mode. Hopefully someone else can weigh in on this.
It seems you got a 3m OTG cable, the "unable to charge while in host mode" message shows up when I plug in my OTG cable.

In to the wall charger pal. It can't be defective as it works on the PC and is brand new. It charged my phone completely the second time i plugged it in.

I bought this one from eBay pal if it helps. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290737576817?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_sacat%3D0%26_from%3DR40%26_nkw%3D290737576817%26_rdc%3D1
So any long USB wires like the 3M one is no good for the HTC One?
I've been using my nvidia shield charger and adapter and thats seems to work fine. Also never noticed any issues using my nexus 2012 charger and 2013 charger and with my iphone 5 adapter plug slow charging.

OTG Host and Charging Cable

Unfortunately, I just wasted over $30 on a Valarm IoT OTG Y cable. It does not work at all as a host cable for any USB device on the G4. I was hoping to use the Valarm cable to connect a USB DAC and charge the phone at the same time. The cable will let me charge the phone but whatever I connected to the USB female port is not recognized. If anyone finds a USB host cable that allows charging, please post!

From what i understand otg goes one way or the other it cant act as a host and carge at the same time. It flips the charging circut to flow out instead of in. Ive been through this on a few phones tried even straight wiring a powerline to the otg itll power the usb device but not charge the phone.

The manufacturer of that cable clearly states that it'll charge a samsung phone, not confirmed working on a G4 though. Here is the link, http://shop.valarm.net/products/micro-usb-host-otg-y-cable-with-micro-usb-power-for-samsung
I wish there was a way to enable charging using OTG.

Yea me to i have a few devices that hook to my car that drain my tablet and phone batts and it kills me the only other way ive got it to work is hard wire a charger to the phone. But of coarse this is a old throw away gs3 that im talkin bout not my g4. I havnt tried on my g4 yet but its all phone specs has to have dual charging circuts cause they can only flow one at a time. Now some new devices i know. Do support otg with charging capabilities.
