I have a KF2 that is stuck onthe orange/white "Kindle Fire" boot logo. The logo displays on the screen and stays static - it doesn't flash/disappear/"shimmer". It doesn't reboot/bootloop, it just stays there.
The device doesn't power on when connected to a PC. Using a factory/bootloader cable, a standard microUSB cable - the device stays completely dark. Pushing/holding the power button does nothing when the USB cable is plugged in, it shows no signs of life. Removing USB, the device boots to the "Kindle Fire" screen and stays there indefinitely. Plugging it into an AC adapter but not a computer, the unit boots to that same "Kindle Fire" screen.
The device was rooted a long time ago by somebody else and I'm not sure what has been done since then. My plan is to fastboot and flash boot/recovery/system/uboot to get it back to stock, but with the unit not even turning on I can't get to that stage. Windows or Linux doesn't pick up any sort of USB device when plugged in (lspci/lsusb/dmesg on Linux returns nothing at all). The fastboot cable works, as I've used it on an identical KF2 with success.
Any thoughts on how to progress would be great!
Best I recall the HD had a bad habit of corrosion on the USB connector. Crack it open and check it..
This would explain a lot if it is corroded and shorting out the power pins. The instances I've seen of this was actually the device would only go into fastboot.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately this isn't a HD, just a regular KF2. I did open it up and check the USB port itself and the pins on the motherboard and all look fine. The device will still startup when on AC over USB - just not with data from the computer.

sorry for reviving old bread
can you get into the system at all?
when plugged in with fastboot cable, does device manager show anything?
is there any missing drivers?
does windows react at all to kf2?

Charging over USB works fine no matter the cable or the connection but it no longer will show up in Windows on any PC as a device. I tried flashing roms, changing cables, and doing the usb fix with Terminal listed in the sticky but it doesnt connect or will it know it's connected to a PC.
Can the port be broken so data no longer works but charging does?
its not the phone its the computer, try another computer

I have tried 3 which is why I wonder if my phone is broken, but it charges fine.
On all PCs the charge light comes on the phone with no problems but with all of them none of them detect a USB device being plugged in.,
Even in recovery if I do a USB-MS mount nothing happens.
Can the usb port break so that it charges with no issue but wont connect to a PC?

I think the solution to your problem can be found in this fix
The USB port on my Evo 4G will charge but won't show up as as a device on my laptop. If I hold the USB cable at an angle, though, it does show up. I think mine is busted, maybe that's the case for yours.

Yup. Last night I completely wiped it and had the phone format and set it up fresh.

Do you think the cable is busted or the phone? I have tried multiple cables on multiple PCs and nothing happens.
So then it is possible for the phone to be unable to connect but still charge fine?

Have you tried mounting when in Recovery?
It really sounds like your cable is weird. The power lanes are on the edges for USB, meaning that the port on the phone is probably physically fine. The cable, however, is vulnerable to damage on any one of the four wires.
If nothing works, then perhaps something internal is busted. What do you need to transfer from your computer? Perhaps you can do it by connecting to your computer through WiFi for mounting the SD card and adb?
Its your USB port on you phone, theres 2 pins or smoething broken inside your phone thats causing the problem. I had the same problem on my Evo were it wouldnt connect as a storage device and would go into car dock mode. I took it to sprint and showed them the problem and they replaced my phone. As long as you dont have any physical damage such as the screen being cracked you should be fine and they should replace it free of cost.
Make sure that your cable is not one of those charge only, car charger type cables. Typical car charging cables don't transfer data.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. If I wiggle it just the right way the computer will see something but it will go away as fast as it shows up. Doubt Sprint will do anything as the phone is a few years old, I dropped the protection plan, and it's rooted to heck.
I'll just keep it running until this fall and upgrade when the new Nexus line comes out.
Hopefully.
I have a kf1 with a jacked up Usb port. I can get it to charge with some wiggling but it doesn't show up in device manager. Is there anyway to root without Pc or fix the port?

That's happened to me several times, and I can speak from experience that it is your charger failing. The USB plug on the stock chargers are poorly made, don't fit well, and will eventually fail because of it.
The new black USB cables that Amazon is selling for the second generation devices, fit very well, and will charge your device without fail.

If you're dealing with an actual hardware defect like the one you've described, it will only get worse, especially if you have to finagle it to get it to work properly. You cannot root the KF without a computer, so you should probably look into getting it repaired or replaced.
So I have an I747 running stock 4.1.2 that was given to me by a friend. When I received it, I noticed I could not access it from any computer. I asked her if she had any trouble and she said no, that she always connected it to a computer and it was easily picked up. Before she gave me the phone, she factory wiped it. Since then, no computer can see it and no option appears in the drag-down menu. Using *#7284#, I set it to MTP and MTP+ADB with nothing changing. I have tried battery pulls, uninstalling/reinstalling drivers, Kies, etc., even changing cables (from cheap ones to the OEM Samsung and HTC ones). I've tried it on Ubuntu 12.10, 11.04, Windows 8, Windows 7, XP, and even Mountain Lion. No computers can see it.
Anyone have any ideas? I cannot even try to root or anything because no version of ODIN works. Yet, if I connect my S2 Skyrocket, all PCs read it, regardless of cable or OS.
I had this problem before and could not find a proper reason.
There *COULD* be a problem with your phones USB connecter. Some hardware could be damaged. This can be caused by incorrectly unplugging or plugging the device in, which can jostle the hardware and break it.
How long was the phone used for?
I hope you have a warranty :/.
Unfortunately, no, the phone does not have warranty. If the USB port were damaged, would it still charge fine? Because apart from no connectivity to a computer, the phone works fine and can see an SD card in it. Its internal storage is accessible through file managers, as well.
If it is damaged, would I be able to see the damage when opening it up? I would not hesitate to fix it if it is something I can re-solder back on or replace. I just do not want to get a replacement USB port if it is not the problem.
I had a very similar problem with my i747. If your phone charges when it's plugged in to the USB port of the computer, you might try this:
Make sure the Samsung drivers are installed. Power off your phone. Power on the phone in Download mode. (Volume Down + Home + Power) Press Volume Up to continue. Once it's in Download mode, plug it into your computer. Windows should now discover it and load the driver. Once this is complete, unplug the phone from the computer, and pull the battery out of the phone to get out of Download mode. Replace the battery, and power on the phone like normal. It should connect to the computer properly.
I found this on the Verizon S3 forums over on Android Central. Worked for me after a lot of other things didn't.
Best of luck!

I have never been "in" the USB port area when taking apart my i747, I would assume it would be visible...but you should try the suggestion of USB drivers from the poster above

my suggestion would be to download the samsung s3 drivers. this worked for me.

In some cases, yes. Charging operation only needs the positive and negative 5 volt pins on the usb bus. In order to transfer data ( and be recognized by the host OS) you must also have connection across the two data pins. It is possible that one of the data pins on the phone's connector OR either end of the micro usb is bent, broken, or otherwise not making connection. Also i have about a hundred (more like 10 but you get the point) micro usb cables laying around and some will ONLY charge. I can't give you a scientific explanation why other than the phone just doesn't like some of them so trying a different micro usb could be the key.

Like you said, I think that sometimes a phone not liking a cable is the truth. What sucks is I never had this problem with my s2 skyrocket on any cable. I may have to send it in for repair if anything. I upgraded to 4.3 last night and still the same so I feel it's definitely a hardware problem.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys.
when i connected usb stick through usb otg cable the phone give me black screen with no respone, i.e I cannot made anything until I pulled the cable out, what a solution for this problem.

Update driver
Have 1 fire on 4.5.5.3, another on 4.5.5.2. Neither will go in fastboot but I have adb working.
I tried to install shemps minimal adb /fastboot after all else failed.
Nothing works!
I bought a fastboot cable and that doesnt do anything either. It has "usb serial" driver but manually installed adb drivers of variety still does not work. Tried "sooner single adb" "adb single composite" "google bootloader interface".
Fastboot -i 0x1949 getvar product
Waiting for device
On minimal adb /fastboot
Waiting for any device
Tried
Adb reboot bootloader
Adb reboot-bootloader
Adb reboot recovery (goes to red exclamation mark with only reboot or factory reset options)
Just boots normally
Should I nuke the boot partition? Worried it will totally be bricked then though.
Well the "fastboot" cable I got was a fake. I dissected the plug to find the 4th pin was floating up a few mm's from the tip. At a 0.0x pin pitch couldnt connect a wire to it either.
Dont buy fastboot cable on ebay from brokenbargains. Wasted days of my time.
And now I have to wait more for usb plugs to show up so I can make the cable.
Dam it.
Anybody know the procedure to short the "usb boot" pins on the circuit?
I would do that if I knew what pins were what... beats waiting. But right now not much choice.
Thanks in advance for any advice
Solved it. Found a old samsung cable like the 1 in this topic. The fake fastboot cable I bought on ehay lacked the pcb. It was just direct pin termination and the 4th pin didnt even terminate to the base where the 4 wires were soldered.
But the old samsung cable did have the pcb. I had to nibble away the rubber around the edges 1st and then the plastic casing over pcb. Somehow didnt cut any pins or wires. If youre careful and use common sense on angle with your cable should be doable. But it did seem like performing complex surgery.
I used angle cutters mostly. Bigger wire snips for the big chunks of rubber njbbled back.
I used a multimeter with a stiff solid wire alligator clipped to 1 probe to make sure the 4th pin was right. As well as 5v. The pin above the red wire is 5v or +. The pin with 4 beside it isin fact 4th pin.
But it seems either + connection works as pictured in this thread.
HOWTO: Fast boot cable
just thought I'd share a short how to on making a fast boot cable. First a fast boot cable is simply pin 1 (5v) shorted to pin 4 on the micro side, I know some use a resistor, probably a good idea, I didn't... Unfortunately pin 4 has no wire...
