So I have an I747 running stock 4.1.2 that was given to me by a friend. When I received it, I noticed I could not access it from any computer. I asked her if she had any trouble and she said no, that she always connected it to a computer and it was easily picked up. Before she gave me the phone, she factory wiped it. Since then, no computer can see it and no option appears in the drag-down menu. Using *#7284#, I set it to MTP and MTP+ADB with nothing changing. I have tried battery pulls, uninstalling/reinstalling drivers, Kies, etc., even changing cables (from cheap ones to the OEM Samsung and HTC ones). I've tried it on Ubuntu 12.10, 11.04, Windows 8, Windows 7, XP, and even Mountain Lion. No computers can see it.
Anyone have any ideas? I cannot even try to root or anything because no version of ODIN works. Yet, if I connect my S2 Skyrocket, all PCs read it, regardless of cable or OS.
I had this problem before and could not find a proper reason.
There *COULD* be a problem with your phones USB connecter. Some hardware could be damaged. This can be caused by incorrectly unplugging or plugging the device in, which can jostle the hardware and break it.
How long was the phone used for?
I hope you have a warranty :/.
Unfortunately, no, the phone does not have warranty. If the USB port were damaged, would it still charge fine? Because apart from no connectivity to a computer, the phone works fine and can see an SD card in it. Its internal storage is accessible through file managers, as well.
If it is damaged, would I be able to see the damage when opening it up? I would not hesitate to fix it if it is something I can re-solder back on or replace. I just do not want to get a replacement USB port if it is not the problem.
I had a very similar problem with my i747. If your phone charges when it's plugged in to the USB port of the computer, you might try this:
Make sure the Samsung drivers are installed. Power off your phone. Power on the phone in Download mode. (Volume Down + Home + Power) Press Volume Up to continue. Once it's in Download mode, plug it into your computer. Windows should now discover it and load the driver. Once this is complete, unplug the phone from the computer, and pull the battery out of the phone to get out of Download mode. Replace the battery, and power on the phone like normal. It should connect to the computer properly.
I found this on the Verizon S3 forums over on Android Central. Worked for me after a lot of other things didn't.
Best of luck!

I have never been "in" the USB port area when taking apart my i747, I would assume it would be visible...but you should try the suggestion of USB drivers from the poster above

my suggestion would be to download the samsung s3 drivers. this worked for me.

In some cases, yes. Charging operation only needs the positive and negative 5 volt pins on the usb bus. In order to transfer data ( and be recognized by the host OS) you must also have connection across the two data pins. It is possible that one of the data pins on the phone's connector OR either end of the micro usb is bent, broken, or otherwise not making connection. Also i have about a hundred (more like 10 but you get the point) micro usb cables laying around and some will ONLY charge. I can't give you a scientific explanation why other than the phone just doesn't like some of them so trying a different micro usb could be the key.

Like you said, I think that sometimes a phone not liking a cable is the truth. What sucks is I never had this problem with my s2 skyrocket on any cable. I may have to send it in for repair if anything. I upgraded to 4.3 last night and still the same so I feel it's definitely a hardware problem.
P
Thanks for all the suggestions, guys.

i can't connect my sgs2 to USB storage. when i plug in the usb cable to my computer and phone it will charge but nothing else happen. i had stock rom before but are currently using jug 4.0. i thought it was the rom so i downgraded to 3.69. still the same problem. i mean i can do anything with the phone just can't let my computer detect the phone. i tried to reinstall the driver, nothing works. please help!
Is your cable a samsung branded one? I had that same problem but with stock rom. I used an LG branded cable and the phone would connect to the computer and charge, but would not go into USB mode.
yeah, i am using the one that came with the phone, i guess i will try to use a different one. it was working fine before, don't know why it just stopped!
This has happened a few time for me. Sometimes the phone has only needed a reboot, the wire definitely plays a big role... I bought some cheap cables that didn't work at all... some of the older roms wouldn't show USB connected unless drivers were installed (kies). An issue I've more recently unveiled is after using an MHL adapter sometimes the USB will connect for 30-60 seconds before unmounting storage again. Hope that helps
My SGSII HercuDom needs more w00t. It always needs more w00t!
I had the same problem on a stock phone (purchased in late Oct from T-Mobile store in Arizona). I would connect it to the computer and it would charge but would not recognize the USB function (for data transfer or modem use).
Took it back to T-Mobile and they overnighted me a new one for no charge. New one works fine.

Dont know how water/moisture got in the port but thats there explanation. All it does is charge from pc, tried using 3 different cables 3 different pc and same thing. Some say a tooth brush might help but tried it and still same.

Cant charge or connect to USB
Hello, i just bought a samsung sgh i777 and when i try to connect it to charge it, wheter is on the wall or computer, a battery starts to flash, if i disconnect it, the phone starts as if you are turning it on. So far i've tried: Change the battery, change the charger several times, put factory settings and still the same problem, can anyone help me?
Thanks,
FS
Charging over USB works fine no matter the cable or the connection but it no longer will show up in Windows on any PC as a device. I tried flashing roms, changing cables, and doing the usb fix with Terminal listed in the sticky but it doesnt connect or will it know it's connected to a PC.
Can the port be broken so data no longer works but charging does?
its not the phone its the computer, try another computer

I have tried 3 which is why I wonder if my phone is broken, but it charges fine.
On all PCs the charge light comes on the phone with no problems but with all of them none of them detect a USB device being plugged in.,
Even in recovery if I do a USB-MS mount nothing happens.
Can the usb port break so that it charges with no issue but wont connect to a PC?

I think the solution to your problem can be found in this fix
The USB port on my Evo 4G will charge but won't show up as as a device on my laptop. If I hold the USB cable at an angle, though, it does show up. I think mine is busted, maybe that's the case for yours.

Do you think the cable is busted or the phone? I have tried multiple cables on multiple PCs and nothing happens.
So then it is possible for the phone to be unable to connect but still charge fine?

Have you tried mounting when in Recovery?
It really sounds like your cable is weird. The power lanes are on the edges for USB, meaning that the port on the phone is probably physically fine. The cable, however, is vulnerable to damage on any one of the four wires.
If nothing works, then perhaps something internal is busted. What do you need to transfer from your computer? Perhaps you can do it by connecting to your computer through WiFi for mounting the SD card and adb?
Its your USB port on you phone, theres 2 pins or smoething broken inside your phone thats causing the problem. I had the same problem on my Evo were it wouldnt connect as a storage device and would go into car dock mode. I took it to sprint and showed them the problem and they replaced my phone. As long as you dont have any physical damage such as the screen being cracked you should be fine and they should replace it free of cost.
Make sure that your cable is not one of those charge only, car charger type cables. Typical car charging cables don't transfer data.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. If I wiggle it just the right way the computer will see something but it will go away as fast as it shows up. Doubt Sprint will do anything as the phone is a few years old, I dropped the protection plan, and it's rooted to heck.
I'll just keep it running until this fall and upgrade when the new Nexus line comes out.
Hopefully.
Alright, so when plugging my phone into my new (literally bought today) netbook, nothing happens.
I installed the Samsung USB drivers as well as Kies. And when plugging the phone in afterwards, nothing happens. From my understanding, whenever plugging in a device into the PC, a bubble on the bottom right hand side would pop up saying "Installing device hardware" or something along those lines.
But for this netbook, nothing. Nothing pops up at all. It's like it doesn't even know a device is plugged in. Although, my phone does charge from the connection and that's about it.
I've used 4 different cables. Two generic cables, Energizer cable, and a RocketFish cable. I was successful with the Energizer cable when I used my friend's laptop to ODIN back to EL29 from the FH13 update.
I'm pretty much stumped right now. Not sure what's going on. Considering returning the laptop and exchanging it for another one.
Have you tried turning on USB debugging?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
Yes I have.
The netbook will recognize my flash drive though. But not the phone. :|
Welp, went back and returned for Asus laptop. The thing recognized everything. I guess the netbook wasn't meant to be.

Go into your dialer and type ##8778# switch to cp and youll see that your device will start downloading the drivers then you should be in business sorry if I put cp wrong long day but I think thats it there should be 3 settings there the one your on cp and all I think so once your done make sure you go back in and change back afterwards or your sd card wont read right. Hope this helps if so say thanks
There is a known issue where the USB port "breaks" somehow. I just experienced this, so it may be your issue also.
Troubleshoot:
drivers
different cords
different devices
Which you have done so it's most likely your phones USB port
Just got a brand new Samsung Galaxy SII T989 from T-Mobile this week, it really is a great phone, only I have a single problem.
The phone charges, it functions properly generally speaking (calls, texts, camera, wi-fi,etc...) but as soon as I connect it to my computer it freaks out.
It acts as if I were disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable 2 times a second. I can hear the phone making the beeping sound it makes once you connect it to the USB every few seconds and in my computer (Which is running Windows 8 x64, just in case.) I can see the "Safely remove hardware symbol pop up and disappear a few times a second as well.
This is really frustrating... I love to take pictures and videos and edit them... I'd also love to copy some music over as well...
So far I've determined it can be the cable, bad drivers, or the phone itself, I just hope it's one of the first two.

Try re installing the correct drivers or switching the usb hub. If that does not work it's most likely the usb cable, swap it for a different one and you should be fine considering you bought the phone new.
Or you got a phone with a bad motherboard which would be crazy considering its new but that kinda sounds like the problem I had

Ok, does it get better or worse if you hold the cable with your finger when it is plugged in to the computer and phone and move it around a bit on the phone end? If so, I even got a Nexus 7 brand new from Google that the charge cable phone end was bad and would not make a good connect and I had to use a different cable and it works fine with my tablet.
If you use the same cable in your AC charger and on the computer then prolly not the cable.
It could be something in Win8 if it is trying to scan your USB port [like maybe a whacked anti-virus].
Have you tried a different USB port on your computer to see if maybe the one you were trying to use is bad itself?
If using a USB hub between your computer and the phone try removing the hub from the equation and connect directly to the computers USB port.

I am using a HUB on a Razer Keyboard that I've always used BUT now that you mention it my webcam had the same problem. It wouldn't work with the HUB on the keyboard. I'll try another USB slot (My computer's other USB slots aren't very accessible which is why I've hesitated to try another slot.)
I don't use anti-virus and yes, the cable works perfectly fine on the AC USB to Power adapter it brings.

I love you. It worked. It's the USB hub which doesn't allow much power to go through to the connected device. Thank yo so much.
So I have a SGH-I747M... recently came into my possession, existed for not sure how long. In any case, I'd love to just jump in and explore what genius this forum has to offer, but I've run into one small tiny problem - my phone isn't getting detected by my computer when plugged in.
It charges, but it doesn't get detected as a device.
Things I've tried:
USB Debugging (on and off)
3 different USB cables
Every single port available on my PC chassis, including the ones that are connected directly to the mobo
Uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for the S3 from Samsung's site
Pulling the battery
Resetting the battery
Restarting phone
Restarting computer
Connecting during Download Mode
Towelroot (it says for all three options "this device is not supported")
Setting through *#0808# MTP and MTP+ADB
Trying a different computer
The cables I've used are all five pin, so its not something as simple as "oh haha im using the cable that doesn't have a data pin"
To be clear, nothing has appeared in Device Manager, and nothing pops up in Computer when I plug it in.
Anything I might be missing? I'm sorry if I've sounded rash or rude in this post, I've spent the last two days trying to diagnose this problem.
It's possible the USB port is defective.
Did you try another computer?
It might be possible that the port is defective, I assume the device charges if so then try a otg item see if the phone sees it
