[Q] loose usb port charge but no connection - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a kf1 with a jacked up Usb port. I can get it to charge with some wiggling but it doesn't show up in device manager. Is there anyway to root without Pc or fix the port?

That's happened to me several times, and I can speak from experience that it is your charger failing. The USB plug on the stock chargers are poorly made, don't fit well, and will eventually fail because of it.
The new black USB cables that Amazon is selling for the second generation devices, fit very well, and will charge your device without fail.

If you're dealing with an actual hardware defect like the one you've described, it will only get worse, especially if you have to finagle it to get it to work properly. You cannot root the KF without a computer, so you should probably look into getting it repaired or replaced.

Anyone having USB connect issues?

Sometimes my phone will not charge when connected to the wall or my computer. The problem usually goes away on it's own, but when I need to charge I generally need to charge.
Sometimes I cannot access my phone via USB on PC either.
Only with data to and from the computer. No charging issues at all.
I've never had issues when plugged in to computer (USB). I frequently have issues when plugging into wall charger, but I think I have a bad cable. Phone will recognize charger connect, sit for a second, and lose the connection. Charging stops while cable is in. I bought a cheap cable on-line for the wall charger. I guess you get what you pay for....!
I have issues with usb connnect to computer since flashing cm6 8/13 nightly. Will not charge or mount usb.
Restoring back to 8/11 seems to fix issue but can't seem to get any newer nightlys to work or rc2.

Kind of sounds like a loose connector. I bought some micro USB cables from monoprice and the size of the connector was just a tad smaller than the plug for the phone. So if the cable wasn't plugged in and propped up in a certain way, the phone wouldn't charge. I just bought some new cables from monoprice (the ferite core ones) and problem solved.
I guess when this happens to you, wiggle the cable a little and then hold it for a few seconds at a certain angle and see if it starts charging... if it does then you know you need a new cable.
I was having similar issues and with my sd card permission issues I simply uninstalled my usb drivers and my removable disc drivers for the phone on the computer I think there was like 3 sets and haven't had an issue since.

USB Transfer Cable for KF

Can anyone give me a recommendation for a Data Transfer cable for the kindle fire? I've seen the threads regarding the factory cable, and have noted that as a possibility, but I was wondering if anyone could refer me to a decent cable that will work strictly for data transfer.
I did purchase this cable from newegg, as it was listed as a charge/data transfer cable specifically for Kindle Fire, however, it only provides charging. It does not provide data transfer for KF, windows doesn't even see the device. Interestingly enough, I hooked up my HTC Evo Design 4g to this cable, and data transfer worked immediately. Just doesn't work for the Kindle for whatever reason. Up till now, I've been using my data cable from the HTC Evo and it works with the Kindle, but I think it's causing issues when I set the KF to fastboot for rooting. Not sure if it's due to the cable or not, that's why I want to try a different cable.
Cable I use
I got this cable to charge my phone and data but works fine with my kindle as well.

I just use the USB cable that came with my old LG dumbphone. It works for data and charging.

I use the USB cable that came with my Kindle 3 (now called the kindle keyboard). It works great! I suppose it was designed to work with any micro USB product, but was optimized for the kindle family

@Cryplock and tobiasunruh: Do the cables you linked to work for rooting? My problem was that I have a cable from my HTC phone, but I can't get past the initial reboot to fastboot. Not sure if it's the cable or the drivers. I've heard the drivers can be a pain to get to work in fastboot.
I'm using usb cable that came with my SG2 and it works well.
i'm loading with the cable from the Samsung gallaxy SII.
works great.

Sorry for the really late response but yes I used the monoprice cable to root my kindle. I also have no problems mounting the kindle to my computer. Works flawless.
I've been using the same cable that came with a 1st gen kindle I got for my daughter. It does work for rooting also. I can't post links here yet but if you go to amazon and search "kindle fire USB" you will find it. Its white and looks like 1 that would come with an Apple product.
Any micro b to usb a cable will work for the kf. They don't make usb cables specifically different for different devices, it has wires that correspond from one end to the other to transfer power and data. They are all made exactly the same albeit different qualities of manufacturing, and the cables and ends can go bad from metal fatigue. If you are having trouble with data connection it could just be a loose connection in the usb micro b end or more likely the wrong drivers installed on your pc.
Also a "factory cable" is a modified usb cable intended solely to alter boot mode, not for data transfer unless equipped with some sort of switch or expressly described as being capable of such.

I purchased my cable from a Japanese thrift store for 1.50, but i'm sure any thrift store micro usb would work.
you all are waaay overthinking this stuff here.
both my original KF and my KF HD 7" are two of the least pickiest microusb devices I've owned.
The reason some devices (i.e. Samsung) are finicky is becauase they connect a precision resistor to two pins on the micro USB connector and their device checks for the presence of their OEM cable by measuring a the power drop over that resistor. One of the pins on a micro usb-B connector is NC since it's a 5 pin connector and the usb A's are 4 pin, so a device that isn't specifically looking for something special on those pins will never know the difference.
Luckily, Amazon took the more respectable route of not ****ing with stupid unnecessary **** in their designs. USB is a digital signal, so as long as you're not getting excessive voltage drop due to too much overall length without an active repeater and your logic high/low signals are within the fairly generous tolerances the spec provides for, any cable will work.
I tend to buy the $4 ones on amazon and have had great luck with them. If I munch one through poor handling or someone steals it, I just go to the big old box of spares I have and pull a handful more out...
I use the cable that came with my Kodak digital camera and it works for charging, syncing and rooting.
The original cable works fine to me, but speed transfers are slow as hell!
I'll try some of your tips on new cable (the cheapest one, possibly).

How can I tell if my USB port is busted or my phone is corrupted? Only charges now.

Charging over USB works fine no matter the cable or the connection but it no longer will show up in Windows on any PC as a device. I tried flashing roms, changing cables, and doing the usb fix with Terminal listed in the sticky but it doesnt connect or will it know it's connected to a PC.
Can the port be broken so data no longer works but charging does?

I have tried 3 which is why I wonder if my phone is broken, but it charges fine.
On all PCs the charge light comes on the phone with no problems but with all of them none of them detect a USB device being plugged in.,
Even in recovery if I do a USB-MS mount nothing happens.
Can the usb port break so that it charges with no issue but wont connect to a PC?

I think the solution to your problem can be found in this fix
The USB port on my Evo 4G will charge but won't show up as as a device on my laptop. If I hold the USB cable at an angle, though, it does show up. I think mine is busted, maybe that's the case for yours.

Do you think the cable is busted or the phone? I have tried multiple cables on multiple PCs and nothing happens.
So then it is possible for the phone to be unable to connect but still charge fine?

Have you tried mounting when in Recovery?
It really sounds like your cable is weird. The power lanes are on the edges for USB, meaning that the port on the phone is probably physically fine. The cable, however, is vulnerable to damage on any one of the four wires.
If nothing works, then perhaps something internal is busted. What do you need to transfer from your computer? Perhaps you can do it by connecting to your computer through WiFi for mounting the SD card and adb?
Its your USB port on you phone, theres 2 pins or smoething broken inside your phone thats causing the problem. I had the same problem on my Evo were it wouldnt connect as a storage device and would go into car dock mode. I took it to sprint and showed them the problem and they replaced my phone. As long as you dont have any physical damage such as the screen being cracked you should be fine and they should replace it free of cost.
Make sure that your cable is not one of those charge only, car charger type cables. Typical car charging cables don't transfer data.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. If I wiggle it just the right way the computer will see something but it will go away as fast as it shows up. Doubt Sprint will do anything as the phone is a few years old, I dropped the protection plan, and it's rooted to heck.
I'll just keep it running until this fall and upgrade when the new Nexus line comes out.
Hopefully.

Microusb cord falls out of port

Hello everyone,
This is my 2nd note II. My first device had a few problems and now this one seems to have a loose charger port. Also, when I connect this device to my tv via microusb, the tv screen flickers (could be an indicator of a faulty micro usb port). Has anyone had the problem of their charger wire falling out of the microusb port? What did you do to fix it? If you sent it to samsung did they return the device in working condition without any dings or scratches?
Thanks im adv

Mine was perfect for the first few weeks, but eventually got a bit loose so I replaced the USB cable which did the trick. Ive heard of other cases where the usb ports became loose, but not to the point of it falling off on its own.
Have you tried other USB cables on your phone?

hey i did try the usb wire that came with my samsung media dock... its a bit more snug, but it came off randomly after a while. my samsung otg usb cable fits great... the thing that concerns me is that sometimes when i connect my device to my media dock (uses the microusb port) which connects my phone to my tv, the screen on the tv flickers. this could be an indication of a faulty microusb port... but heres the confusing thing, ive tried transferring files to and from my computer via microusb and it works fine, so that would be an indication of a working usb port.
from what you have heard or read, was the consensus a problem with the usb port or the wire?
thanks
Yes, the wire was the culprit based on my reading.
Better have your phone checked. Im sure it's well within Samsung's warranty period
Ironically the best cable i use is a blackberry one, excellent secure fit

Problems with USB connection

I had been somewhat unlucky and while charging my beloved FLO something went puf (literally). After that I don't have any USB connectivity. Charging my N7 works (very slowly), but no USB OTG or USB ADB. OK Fine and dandy if I wouldn't be total idiot and wipe system while trying to install new ROM before transferring ROM image to internal storage.
Now I have FLO paper clip able to go to TWRP but can't install nothing. As far I understand there's no way to enable wifi in TWRP.
Any ideas what would needed to be replaced to make my FLO work again so I can put some ROM on it and make it work again.
I'm not sure if USB daughter board would suffice and solve my problem. Any suggestions?

Either the USB port developed "dry joints" or the wide silver cable (LCM) needs to be re-seated on both connectors.
Disconnect the battery before fixing LCM cable. Here is advice on USB port repair.
Replacing the daughterboard PCB should be the last resort because it is unlikely that the touch function will work 100%. It would work if we had access to the touch calibration software - the problems are described here https://forum.xda-developers.com/ne...rivers-to-calibrate-touch-screen-usb-t3334898

I doubt re-seating would help or cleaning USB port, since it was something electrical happening with that *puf*. If my memory serves me right there was a smell of burnt electronics. I doubt that some shortage disconnected any cables.

Sounds like you need a new charging port and board. Easy to fit but difficult to get hold of one. Maybe purchase a broken Flo on eBay and extract the charging port board

Even tho charging works? The only problem is data part of USB connection. USB OTG will not work neither will it connect to a PC for file transfer/adb. But if connected to PC or plug device charges. I believe it will not charge past 80 or 90%.
