Hey people,
I recently sold my iPhone 6S+ and paid under half the price of it for a G4, and loving it. However, There is a slight issue that is bugging the hell out of me.
The GPS icon in the notification area is nearly always on, meaning the gps is working. Sometimes its white, other times its grey (as seen is attached screenshots) . How can i find out what is using location?
Thanks

I have the same problem on 2 of my 3 g4's, only way I have found to fix it is to root and use xpossed app ops to turn location off for android system.
Strange, my G4 is MM version 20d-EUR-XX stock and while the position setting is always on in high precision mode the location icon is turned on only when using navigation apps or shortly for random apps requiring a position.

I have the same problem, usually i've tried to solve it by turning off and on the GPS from quick settings, but it's not a real solution.
Now I denied GPS permission to all apps (except for apps that I'm sure need it like gmaps) and seems to solve the problem.
BTW, do you have some tool to check if the device goes to deep sleep (like cpu spy, for example)? Because i've noticed that my device quite never goes to deep sleep, so there is still something strange.

There is wakelock detector, which shows how much the device is awake and how much sleep. But it needs root to show what apps are keeping the device awake. These are the issues of staying stock with no root. I will be flashing Genysis rom whenever i have the time to do it. These issues are present in stock roms in any phone.
In Settings -> Location it shows which apps accessed the location recently and how much battery they used. You can also disable location for smart settings and Google location history.

I have my phone running 99.6% of the time in spare parts and it shows android system as the culprit holding a partial wakelock.
so my question is, how do i fix this? i've tried a factory reset three times, am updated to 1.21 ota and have slowly started to reintegrate apps but it always starts again and always after a different app.
i'm getting pretty frustrated anyone got any ideas?
UPDATE In my case it was network time abusing wireless location service that was causing the problem and hence the reason a factory reset didnt solve it, i switched off network time and voila!
just to clarify, no live wallpapers, and phone is in airplane mode to avoid any data usage drainig the battery.
i have got beautiful widgets homescreen small clock and pure cal widget installed at the moment but even when i uninstall them it doesnt fix it, also im running launcher pro 0.4.2 but also had the problem when i reverted to sense.
and i have read every other thread here about battery life that i could find but no-one seems to have this problemo
anyone with any advice on why my phone wont sleep?

ok cool, giving that i try now but i had been leaving it in airplane mode to try and take the vagaries of data out of the equation.
this started about a week ago and i really noticed it when i was in a 6 hour long meeting and my battery basically draines 60% even though the phone was in airplane mode
ok tried that but with my phone just factory reset, airplane mode and no apps installed other than spare parts it's showing running 94.1 % of the time and all of it is android system.
that cant be right
i have restored data, maybe i shouldnt restore data either but that just seems plain crazy
Re: Android system - partial wake lock
What exact foreground and background processes/services do you have running when this is happening, any idea?
Apps like System Panel can show you them and some useful other details. That is certainly too high.

ok right now there is
com.android.syncml.service
sense
market
messages
people
rss reader
syncml provider
sys panel
touch input
updater
and then a load of inactive cached applications
do you see anything unusual there?
ok so i downloaded system app and killed all apps except excluded and sytem apps and my running usage has gone down, now thats no suprise in and of itself but now i need to see if it stays down.
i've just checked again and the percentage is still going down, so it's either an inactive app which i didnt list ( is that even possible if its inactive) or one of the items i listed above.
has anyone got any thoughts.
What do the logs say upon going to standby? (Use aLogcat to watch/save system log).
I had same problem I tried the turning off network always on to off, didn't change anything. the thing that worked for me was turning off my flickr account!? For some reason it kept my calendar awake so keeping system from sleeping, don't ask me why as I can't figure it out, though since doing this I'm now getting up to 2 days of average use from the battery. Also I've done the usual of reducing the different accounts sync timings etc.
Have you typed *#*#4636#*#* into the phone key pad to look at what is happening? This can give valuable info on what's draining the battery.

I have the same problem as OP since the latest update. The *#*#4636#*#* code is not helping in this case. The partial wake lock is displayed as Android System - which doesn't tell me anything.
I read something about the Calendar issues but I am unable to stop the calendar in running processes.
How did you solve your problem?

Ok i seem to have had some luck since last night though i'm not sure of the exact reason.
i did as th3 said and downloaded system monitor and then killed all background active and inactive tasks and that seems to have solved the problem. I have no idea why that would be the case though and i am watching it carefully to see if it stays fixed.

Djet, I installed alogcat and have found all references to wakelock, rather than post the entire log
D/PowerManagerService( 77): wakelock: PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK 'NetworkLocation Check Location' activated (minState=0)
D/PowerManagerService( 77): wakelock: PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK 'NetworkLocation Check Location' activated (minState=0)

D/PowerManagerService( 77): wakelock: FULL_WAKE_LOCK 'keyguard'ACQUIRE_CAUSES_WAKEUP activated (minState=3)
there are also some entries in red like this one
E/vold ( 53): Unable to lookup media '/devices/platform/msm_sdcc.1/mmc_host/mmc0/mmc0:0001'
and a load of errors to do with global search etc but this is all pretty much gobbledegook to me, what am i looking for?
thanks
ok so based on that log i have switched of the use wireless networks to find my location (not gps i hardly ever use that anyway) and now the running % is dropping fast.
i will keep you posted as to whether it keeps coming down or not.
it is going to be an enormous bummer if i cant use wireless location, thats one of a smartphones greatest powers, why would this suddenly start happening now ( started about a week before the ota update) and continues even when i factory reset.

I suppose it's not the feature itself guilty but the applications using it. I had the same issue with battery running out because of Location service wake locks. It turned out one of the Locale app plugins was abusing this service. Having it uninstalled battery run became normal.

Re: Android system - partial wake lock
There are a many app settings that drain battery and the stock setup is nothing I am fond of. Location/locale was one of them for me, calendar, network time and widget/app syncs being the others. A non-stock app causing such problems was NetCounter.
Calendar was fixed by killing it and restarting it. It's a known bug for many.
If many widgets are running sync very often, then you can imagine battery draining fast.

Good find. I had the thing off anyway, but it is good to know.
Hi,
Is there something wrong with my battery? This is the second time it has happened to me .. last time I left it overnight at 45% and when I woke up the phone was off, so I looked in battery usage and saw that it fell to 0 right from ~25%, and today, I was in an international call, and the call cut off and the phone shut down. It wasn't hot at all, I checked.
Is there some bug with the software, or is it a problem with my battery?
Can you check in the setting menu, where the battery is used for? There must be some or one thing, maybe a constantly updating widget, which is faulty, it really take me 1.5 days before my battery is flat with internet on all the time, and 3 days plus with internet off.
On the other hand I had the same with my lg a while ago and after a flash it was OK.
Sometimes these kind of phones behave very unpredictable....

Oh I'm not worried about the battery life, I was putting it through a lot of use.. and I have a lot of widgets updating frequently
My concern is with the sudden drop from ~25% to 0 which has happened twice now

This happened to me few times. The last time I noticed was from ~48% left it overnight (only about 6 hours) and I woke up to find the phone was off. Usually my phone loose about ~25% overnight. Not sure what or who is the culprit. I have flashed few firmwares and none fixed the issue. Currently I'm rooted using Generic World firmware with locked bootloader and removed many bloatwares.

I've this program installed and I'm sure it has not helped with this issue. I see "missing data" when there is a sudden loss of battery.
I´ve also the problem; my arc is not rooted, so there is no chance to calibrate the battery...?
Had it once, took the battery out and in again and it had 20% more again. Then I charged it at home and so far it works fine.

Is there another way to reset the batterystats.bin without root?
Well looks like many people are having this issue, either there are a lot of faulty batteries out there, or its a problem with the firmware. I'm leaning towards the latter.
I'm using Rogers 2.3.3, what are you guys using?

I experinced this issue with Singapore generic firmware as well as World Generic (current) firmware. Hence I don't think it could be a specific firmware issue.

Anyway to find out what or which program kept the phone to stay in awake? As you can see the screenshot, the phone was awake during random times and most of the time without the screen isn't on.

"Latitude"? How can I verify that it doesn't affect me
Latitude comes with Google Maps, its basically a location sharing feature. If you press the menu button in google maps you can click on latitude, then menu button again -> settings, and change from 'Detect Automatically' to 'Manual'
If you don't know what it is I doubt you actually have it enabled anyway, so it could be some weather widget maybe?

I checked and my menu reads as "Join Latitude" which means I have not enabled it in the first place (I guess so).
I'm using Beautiful widget for weather service so not sure whether that is the culprit.
I wish there is more visibility for this .

Anybody have thoughts?
Using a gold one on AT&T, carrier locked from best buy.
I've stopped all weather processes in apps and restarted the phone a number of times, still says weather unavailable.
I've also changed the settings in the weather app to refresh every hour, and update when I open the app. 2 restarts and a power off later and still says weather unavailable on the lock screen.
Any help would be appreciated.

Works fine on mine with Location Mode set to "Battery Saving".
I believe the only difference between "Battery Saving" and "High Accuracy" is that "High Accuracy" turns on the GPS, which does not use any data, but does consume battery.
Oh, so I'm probably better off using the High Accuracy then?! Weird it doesn't work on mine with the Battery saving options or other though...

No! You got it wrong. The "High Accuracy" mod uses GPS in conjunction with your Mobile Data, so you are not "better off using it", cuz not only it will consume your mobile data, but also your battery. That's why it called High Accuracy, because it uses both resources to obtain high accuracy!
"Battery Saving" works just fine with the HTC weather widget, no need for the High Accuracy.
I thought it was weird. I don't use the phone now so gave up on it. Going to sell it, as I didn't like it, don't use it, and got a Note 3, plus its in brand new condition still...
Anyone figure this out yet?
Same problem one m9. Location services makes no difference when I change it. No weather widgets from any app are accurate for very long or at all. Not quite sure what to try next.
Alright everyone,
Some details about my phone before we begin-
I am a moderate user. I play some games, check emails, text and that's about it.
My phone is NOT rooted and obviously I am not running a custom rom, or a alternate launcher, and I haven't really modified many if at all any settings.
So, that being said I am experience some sever kernel wake lock issues form bam_dmux_wakelock for the past week or so. As you see in my picture, 6 out of my 7 hours of up time (off charger) has been kept from deep sleep, therefore destroying my battery time.
Today I have maybe 30-40 minutes total of screen on time, but not nearly the 6 hours of non deep sleep time.
I've turned off "okay google" detection, disabled wifi when screen is off, restricted background data for youtube, disabled google + (I don't use social media) and my brightness is on auto mode, typically around 35% when the screen is on.
If google can see this I would like to offer them a huge F you for changing the permission architecture so that gplay apps cant detected whats causing the wake-lock without root. They are pretty much forcing us to root our phones to access features locked meanwhile continuing to call android "Open Source"
Can anyone give me a recommendation on what are my options? Or should I really just root my phone, which I don't want to do (I have in the past but I haven't needed too with the G3 since it has everything I want without root)
I don't think it's Google's fault if LG makes a sucks kernel. Anyway, bam_dmux seems to be related to radios. Could it be that during those wake locks you were in an area where there is weak signal? Are you still experiencing this error after a reboot of the phone?

I've reset the phone multiple times, and have also cleared the cache from the bootloader as well. I don't have a weak signal in my area; also the radio interface is a separate wake lock code from bam_dmux. From what I read bam_dmux has to do with google background services.

I don't see a google location service only the Verizon Location Agent; there are two other services called "LocationServices" under All in my application manager, and they are both listed at being 0.00 bytes in size (?) I force stopped those anyways along with the verizon location agent which restarted anyways. I also have location completely off in my quick menu from the pull down bar, I only turn it on when I'm using GPS.
Hi!
I used to have no problems with this situation on any of my previous phones:
In apps that uses gps, like runkeeper, i get very fast gps lock.. but, then, once I disconnect the screen, the "location" seems to be turned off.. The gps track stops counting. When I turn the screen on again to check what is happening, the phone instantly gets gps lock and registers that new spot. Basically what happens is that I will get a track but, instead of having the full track, I only get "straight" lines between the points the gps locked when i turner the screen on to check what was going on..
I have the location in high accuracy..
Any ideas?
Thanks!
I have the Impression there is a different location provider for the new chipset. When i am at places without any gps signals (for example a tunnel) the reported location is moving with the same speed and direction i had before coming into the tunnel. There also a change in my Google location history. When the screen is off it looks like the location is provided by phone cell only. The reported location is more than 300m away from my real location. I have not seen this in the same locations with my older phones. (Edit: All with Oyxgen OS 3.1.2)
I have the same issue as op on 3.1.2, not rooted.

I have this stupid thing also, stupid phone,
The gps loses the fix right after you leave the app that uses it. It doesn't work in the background, I'm gonna have to return my phone sadly.
So does this happen with the newer firmware? Can you put it in the background with the screen on and it run? It seems like a software issue more so than hardware, maybe I'm wrong but who knows..
Sent from my SM-G935T using Tapatalk
obviously a software issue, but they won't fix it since nobody talks about it. If you switch to another app that doesn't use GPS or turn off the screen the phone loses the fix right away.
Still happens with Oxygen OS 3.2.0
Can you give a try launching a nav session in google map. On my lg G2, when I get a fix in google map then turn the screen off, I will loose my fix. But if I launch a turn by turn nav session I will keep my gps fix even if I turn the screen off.

Yes. This is likely related to the aggressive Doze mode that has plagued users in receiving notifications. Try disabling Doze by following the instructions in the link below and try GPS again. If it works, then Doze is the cause.
