Android system - partial wake lock - one solution found

I have my phone running 99.6% of the time in spare parts and it shows android system as the culprit holding a partial wakelock.
so my question is, how do i fix this? i've tried a factory reset three times, am updated to 1.21 ota and have slowly started to reintegrate apps but it always starts again and always after a different app.
i'm getting pretty frustrated anyone got any ideas?
UPDATE In my case it was network time abusing wireless location service that was causing the problem and hence the reason a factory reset didnt solve it, i switched off network time and voila!

just to clarify, no live wallpapers, and phone is in airplane mode to avoid any data usage drainig the battery.
i have got beautiful widgets homescreen small clock and pure cal widget installed at the moment but even when i uninstall them it doesnt fix it, also im running launcher pro 0.4.2 but also had the problem when i reverted to sense.
and i have read every other thread here about battery life that i could find but no-one seems to have this problemo

anyone with any advice on why my phone wont sleep?

A long shot, but go in to Mobile Settings and untick Enable always-on mobile data.

ok cool, giving that i try now but i had been leaving it in airplane mode to try and take the vagaries of data out of the equation.
this started about a week ago and i really noticed it when i was in a 6 hour long meeting and my battery basically draines 60% even though the phone was in airplane mode

ok tried that but with my phone just factory reset, airplane mode and no apps installed other than spare parts it's showing running 94.1 % of the time and all of it is android system.
that cant be right
i have restored data, maybe i shouldnt restore data either but that just seems plain crazy

What exact foreground and background processes/services do you have running when this is happening, any idea?
Apps like System Panel can show you them and some useful other details. That is certainly too high.

ok so i downloaded system app and killed all apps except excluded and sytem apps and my running usage has gone down, now thats no suprise in and of itself but now i need to see if it stays down.
i've just checked again and the percentage is still going down, so it's either an inactive app which i didnt list ( is that even possible if its inactive) or one of the items i listed above.
has anyone got any thoughts.

What do the logs say upon going to standby? (Use aLogcat to watch/save system log).

I had same problem I tried the turning off network always on to off, didn't change anything. the thing that worked for me was turning off my flickr account!? For some reason it kept my calendar awake so keeping system from sleeping, don't ask me why as I can't figure it out, though since doing this I'm now getting up to 2 days of average use from the battery. Also I've done the usual of reducing the different accounts sync timings etc.
Have you typed *#*#4636#*#* into the phone key pad to look at what is happening? This can give valuable info on what's draining the battery.

I have the same problem as OP since the latest update. The *#*#4636#*#* code is not helping in this case. The partial wake lock is displayed as Android System - which doesn't tell me anything.
I read something about the Calendar issues but I am unable to stop the calendar in running processes.
How did you solve your problem?

Ok i seem to have had some luck since last night though i'm not sure of the exact reason.
i did as th3 said and downloaded system monitor and then killed all background active and inactive tasks and that seems to have solved the problem. I have no idea why that would be the case though and i am watching it carefully to see if it stays fixed.
i dont have a flickr account setup

Djet, I installed alogcat and have found all references to wakelock, rather than post the entire log

ok so based on that log i have switched of the use wireless networks to find my location (not gps i hardly ever use that anyway) and now the running % is dropping fast.
i will keep you posted as to whether it keeps coming down or not.
it is going to be an enormous bummer if i cant use wireless location, thats one of a smartphones greatest powers, why would this suddenly start happening now ( started about a week before the ota update) and continues even when i factory reset.

I suppose it's not the feature itself guilty but the applications using it. I had the same issue with battery running out because of Location service wake locks. It turned out one of the Locale app plugins was abusing this service. Having it uninstalled battery run became normal.

Yes i know what you mean, how did you go about diagnosing that? also i have done several factory resets and it still happens

There are a many app settings that drain battery and the stock setup is nothing I am fond of. Location/locale was one of them for me, calendar, network time and widget/app syncs being the others. A non-stock app causing such problems was NetCounter.
Calendar was fixed by killing it and restarting it. It's a known bug for many.
If many widgets are running sync very often, then you can imagine battery draining fast.

[Q] Battery Drain in Airplane Mode, and even otherwise - Andromadus Mimicry

Hey all,
I have a rooted Desire Z, that's almost 2 years old. I had been using the Virtuous Sense ROM for the most part and had been quite happy with it. Recently, I figured it was time I switched to ICS. So I flashed the Andromadus Mimicry ROM and have been loving it ever since. My only gripe with it is the battery life. I have been meaning to test it out extensively before I could bother the DEV with my nooby queries, but haven't had the time to do so.
When I check Settings > Battery, the screen always seems to be using up most of the %. I have searched through the forums and have done the following, in addition to a few steps that I could think on my own -
Re-calibrated Battery Stats
Clear cache & devklik cache fortnightly
Brightness - Set to 20% (No Auto)
Set to dim after 30 seconds
No render effects (ROM specific I think)
Animations are On.
No Bloatware Installed (Facebook, Twitter, Chrome, etc)
Sync is Auto (I need this)
Froze Google Maps and few other unnecessary background apps that I rarely use with Titanium (using Watchdog to monitor what was eating up CPU)
Disabled Google Backup
Wifi is always Off (I have to depend on 3G for my connectivity needs)
No Battery Saving Apps or Auto Kill Task Managers installed.
News & Facebook widgets set to manual update.
V6 SuperCharger with stock Services.jar.
CPU clock runs @ 245 Mhz on idle, which is most of the time.
GPS is always Off
Google's Location Service (Wifi & mobile network) is On.
Coming to the point, last night the phone was fully charged to 100%. I decided to turn Airplane mode On before I went to sleep to figure the drain in the absence of networks. Woke up to find 78%. That's 2.2% per hour. I checked Better Battery Stats and it seems the phone was awake for the whole ~10 hours. The culprit seems to be GPSLocationProvider. Note that the GPS is Off ; so this has to be the Google's Location Service (Wifi & mobile network)? Disabling this would be inconvenient because it's needed for Weather, and a few other things.
I'm attaching the screens, because I'm pretty new to this and would like to see what people who know more than me have to say about this. A drain of 22% in Airplane mode isn't normal and is crazy, right? Or perhaps,it's time to get a new battery?
PS: The battery has drained a further 20% since the time I took the screenshots, while I was typing this. I merely used the phone for a few messages and to check my mail. (see second-to-last vs last screen)
Radio - 12.56.60.25_26.10.04.03. Signal Strength is usually ~ -89dBm. I have noticed people claiming that the .19 radio is quite battery-friendly but I live in India, so I had to go with the WWE radio that seemed the latest. I didn't think it'd work here. Perhaps I'm wrong?

It's an app calling the location services api. Try disabling Facebook and/or whatsapp and see if that helps. I'm unfamiliar with either of those apps, but I've heard nothing but bad things about the Facebook app, so that would be the first one I'd remove to see if it helps.
This goes without saying but of course make sure you've done a full wipe of /data since coming from your old rom. Hope that helps. I'm currently sitting at 12 days since my vision has been unplugged in airplane mode (radio off, wifi off, etc).

GPSLocationProvider - Reboot to Fix.
Thanks for your input, blk_jack. I did do a full wipe before migrating. As suggested in your ROM's OP, I don't use the Facebook app. The Facebook entry seen in the screenshot belongs to the Facebook Messenger app, which might partly be the cause. Upon further searching, I found that many people have been complaining about this issue on many different flavors of ROMs (ICS / JB) and hardware (HTC, Samsung, LG). Let me elaborate.
Searching for 'GPSLocationProvider' brings a ton of threads about this issue. I will post here whatever I could gather from these posts, for the benefit of others who face this.
Some people get this wakelock if they use GPS for anything and then turn it off. For example, if you turn on GPS, use a map application for a short while, close the map application and turn off GPS, the wakelock is born. Even if you kill any active map services, it will still be there and ends up draining your battery.
It seems to be chiefly caused by apps that use Location such as Google Maps, Facebook, Facebook Messenger, etc. Turning off all location services is advisable.
In some cases, the GPS does not turn back on until the phone is rebooted but that is not the case in this ROM. GPS works when turned On.
To get rid of the wakelock caused by GPSLocationProvider, rebooting seems to be the only working option as of now.
There is a step-by-step instruction guide (written by Karpfenhai) in the [APP]BetterBatteryStats thread OP, that deals with configuring autostarts, which apparently fixes this issue. I'm yet to try it, so I can't comment if it works or not.
I wish I'd been smarter and searched for 'GPSLocationProvider' instead, before creating this thread. Thanks for your time, anyway.

Screen Off Widget/Shortcut on Desktop?

If I may use this opportunity to ask you something else related to your ROM.. I just found out that I don't have 10 posts yet, so I can't post it in the ROM thread.
Is it possible to create a widget/shortcut on the desktop to turn off the screen, perhaps by using the Launcher Activity options? I am currently using the one that's there in the Notification Drawer (Power Widget), pulling it down each time to turn the screen off is a tad inconvenient. The desktop Power Widget doesn't seem to have the Screen Off option. Is this possible at all without having to use an external app?

Yep, I have a nova launcher gesture set to run the root app killscreen.apk (search google).
You could add that app to your home screen too.

[Q] Google Play Services draining battery

This is draining my battery. Kept phone awake for almost 100% on time. Anyone else noticing this? Not changed anything. Only thing that has changed is I now have Google Glass, but I dont have them with me today, so it wouldnt be using that.

I was having a similar problem with Play Services and Media Services. I installed App Cache Cleaner and set it to auto wipe every hour or so. That fixed the problem (or at least stopped it from draining the battery).

I have disabled use wireless networks in Location Services and all has gone back to normal. Maybe give that a shot and see if that fixes it for you.

Researched this a lot, found some solutions, bad and good fixes and after trying some different twists on it after two days this is what I found to be the best, and I decided since this is just as bad as 4.0/4.1 and the mediaserver battery drain I might as well try and help at least 1 person by mass posting this reply I wrote else where to other threads, so here you go:
"Hey- I don't know if you, or anyone else has found a working solution, but here is the way I found best:
Note- I am on galaxy s4 [sgh-i337] running a 4.4 KitKat rom. I have found the following work around to work best for me:
1 Google now & Hotword detection=OFF,
2 GPS = OFF and turned on only when needed, eg maps/checkin on facebook/whatever needs location.
3 Settings-> Manage Apps -> Google Play Services -> Manage Space -> Clear All Data.
**Optional:After this [root only] I go into KT tweaker and make sure my phone cpu is set to a max of 810 Mhz when screen off.**
This fix usually works until I reset the phone. I ALWAYS follow those 3 steps when rebooting. AND always check that after I've used GPS that Google Play Services isn't keeping my phone awake. [Eg, after 30 minutes I check if the phone ever went to sleep again when the screen was off.] IF it does act up, I repeat steps 1, 2 &3. I still get notifications and all, and this is the least feature disabling way I've found that works with the cost of a little micro-management of your phone.
With this fix I can idle for an estimated 5-6days. As I take off my phone from charge at 8am and at noon with minimal usage [maybe 4 or 5 texts] I am at 97%. With WiFi on & connected.
OTHER: I personally keep NFC&Android beam&Bluetooth OFF, and turn ON when I need it on. Other- WiFi is always ON, and "Scanning Always Available" & "WiFi Optimization" is checked ON for me. And for location mode when I do have it on, I keep it at EDIT: Device only. Using only gps to find my location.
All in all, I hope this gets fixed."

The date I noticed my battery issues coincides with when the update went live. I've tried tinkering as much as I can to disable wake lock permissions in all sorts of apps and using wake lock detector, but I can't really find the culprit.
I'm rooted, on 4.6.3. Is there a way to turn off the OTA check, or fool it into thinking I have 4.6.3.
Is it something else? I have a lot of apps, but the only thing wake lock can tell me about the sheer number of wakes is google play services, which has had it's permission to wake disabled but still is somehow the cause. That and system are about equal. Awake time is 91% since my last full charge and unplug. Not good.

Just to maybe assist you in finding the culprit I'm on 4.6.3 with google apps but no root. I've not experienced any wake locks. Perhaps clearing Google's cache and data?

Sorry I meant I was on 4.6.1 still. Will clear data and see.

Probably one of those glitches that can be solved by a reboot. However, you can disable updates using hdxposed module for xposed if you want.

Done both of those things plus much more. Anyone else having this issue?

try taking a titanium backup of everything and then factory reset.. with everything backed up to your PC. then root and start restoring everything gradually.. start by social apps and call log and messages.. then your essential apps.. and see.. then add the rest of the apps bit by bit till you find the offending application or maybe something just got screwed will be fixed when the data clears..
just make sure there is nothing out of the norm in your essential apps, meaning they are all tried and tested by everyone.. facebook, whatsapp, keep, launcher.. that stuff. and also make sure in these apps to limit their ability to check every X minutes as they can really drain your battery.

I've disabled wakelock on anything that has reported to use it by wake lock detector that I don't absolutely need to have it. I've uninstalled any non-essential apps. I've done too much tinkering and have too much important app data to risk doing a reset when it may not work.
I need a way to actually get to the bottom of it first.
Why is google play services waking the phone 2000+ times per day? Wake lock detector says the phone has been awake 5 hours out of 10, but then the list of times for each app only adds up to 20 minutes. How do I find out what was keeping it awake the rest of the time?

Possibly some kind of location based frippery. Try removing location access from troublesome app. And turn off auto sync if it's on

Location services are completely disabled. Auto sync is off. Both have been since this started happening.
Used app quarantine to disable almost every app I put on here, and Fire OS is still 51%.
Possible culprits, though I'm not sure if I find it likely: Ultimate dynamic navbar, lightning chat, foscam viewer, google apps, xposed mods (have a few). greenify (that would be ironic), flixter, es file explorer, buildprop editor, calculator, jellybean keyboard, multi timer, skana battery alerts, nova launcher, power toggles, slacker radio, bank app, super user, terminal emulator, outlook, wakelock detector.

Get better battery stats from xda, it gives a better breakdown of wake locks.

Ok here is what I believe I have found out, using network log along with better battery stats.
The phone is waking up constantly due to netbios pings (I know not technically pings), from various computers on my network, mostly my main PC. I don't know why it's doing this. Could be one of many background processes. In my opinion, it shouldn't matter. The phone shouldn't be that stupid.
I was able to... I think, mitigate a lot of this by doing a few things.
The first is editing qcom's ini inside etc/wifi so that if it says offload, I put a 0, I assume it's offloading to the cpu, which causes it to wake for pointless crap. The second thing I did was re-enable optimized wifi. This is probably already on, on everyone else's phone. I turned it off because I was trying to figure out how to tether while connected to a vpn through the phone. Still can't get that to work. And I know how to, because I did it on my nexus prime, but something in the fire OS is f'ing that method up (iptable configs).
I'm considering seeking an app to turn off wifi when the phone sleeps, because better battery shows wifi on 100%, and even with the changes above, I was still responding to some netbios pings in the network (about 1/5th as many). I imagine most networks will have noise like this.
However, even after all this, fire OS is still the main battery draw. Better Battery doesn't account for all the wake time, not even by half.
For now I've put enough time into this.

A Root Battery Saver App (By Moi)

I've lately got into developing mobile apps and even though i've promoted this as beta, people seem to be using it, but nobody's reporting back! - same goes for all of my apps, i don't get it...
Anyway, i need real feedback and I was wondering if any folks here with a rooted android could help test this app out, it was made on Kitkat, so while yes, it works fine for me, it may not for you... I've had one feedback comment saying that his modem data was not switching off on lollipop, so i added support for that now allowing him or her to use the app as intended, but after replying via the playstore, nothing was heard of him since... almost suspicious lol

How it works, if you're interested!
2 things use up battery power
1. apps that are CPU intensive, eg constantly repeating to connect (this would only happen under malware, as most apps would never do this, it would see the socket it closed/dead and stop and wait until user input, malware would constantly reconnect.. but 99/100 apps will just stop and then do nothing meaning all genuine apps should 'idle' not really using up cpu time....
2. Hardware services, bluetooth, mobile data, wifi, gps, these services are all hardware, so your cpu will switch on each of these services and each one has a significant drain on your battery, go bed at 11pm, by 9am it may have drained 30 - 40% or more... with this app, it will have drained under 1 - 3% depending on your battery (tablets for example should run for days with this app if rooted)
So this app does 2, it first remembers which hardware was on before the screen goes off, so no confusing switch wifi on when wifi's already on (as i've seen on other apps?!) reason why i wrote this because all the other apps i came across sucked really, almost but not quite etc etc..
With this tool, if you're a light user you could quite easily see 60% battery improvement! the bonus side affect of this app is also interesting, for 1, it charges quicker! if you accidentally fall asleep, it will conserve as much power as possible, obviously sms,telephone/mobile network is still running in the background so you can't completely stop a device from draining...
the other bonus side affect was, it kills dead all facebook notifications, twitter, well it would as it disables wifi, modem. 3g, bt when the screen goes off! :good:
1 more feature, if you drop your phone? then what?... take where's my droid, i sms it asking for location... it replies "GPS OFF" and "modem off" simple, send the text message to your phone with "on" without the " " around on, and the app will disable itself so it does not switch off the services and then at the same time it enables Wifi, Modem Data, Gps, Bt pretty useful huh... then on where's my droid, you'll get GPS combined with AGPS data from mobile data giving you pin point accuracy, as soon as you get the data of where it is... type in
off (to turn this feature off) or
on (to turn on all your services)
It also disables itself taking calls...
It has a smart check feature too, let's say after you switch the screen on and for some reason wifi failed to switch on ? after 3 seconds it will then check again to see if wifi is indeed on... if it's not on, it attempts to switch it on again...

So basically what your device is and what's not working (along with build version, lollipop/kitkat etc) and i'll see if i can find a way to add it in to support your droid! - one more thing, i've been releasing updates like a crazy woman collecting cats lately and even though it does all this it's only supporting "Extreme power saving option" come tuesday i hope to have that sorted out so that every few minutes it can wake up to check for twitter/facebook messages for all of those who hate the sound of a phone being blissful quiet
if you're rooted and it does not look like that in the video [top of screen] (not the interface, but the services, i've already updated the UI)
anyway, help me to make it better for you...
One more thing, there are no push notifications, no popup adds, no huge banners, all my apps have one tiny advert to help support the countless hours of programming i'm putting into this apps, with each upgrade i aim to make them more stable and more usable, and i really need peoples help and support even if that is criticism - it's "beta" but i'm almost ready to bring it out after i add the wake up services....
